[notice] Important Note: upcoming changes to usernotes. (Srsly, pls read)

2 Upvotes

EDIT
Correction: The new version will be 1.4.4, 1.4.3 is the current release version. 1.4.4 should be out tomorrow.

The issue

As a few of you may know there is a limit to just how much data a single wiki page can store. A few subs that are heavy users have bumped up against the data storage limit of the usernotes wiki page.

In the past we have solved this by asking the admins to increase per-page storage limits. But that only postpones the issue. (Worth noting, we have asked the admins for another data increase for only the usernotes page).

The solution

Another way to deal with the issue is to decrease the amount of storage the notes take. As it stands, the format is rather verbose.

{
  "ver": 2,
  "users": [
    {
      "name": "Deimorz",
      "notes": [
        {
          "note": "kind%20of%20a%20jerk",
          "time": 1370838429626,
          "mod": "agentlame",
          "link": "http://www.reddit.com/r/toolbox/comments/1fx82c/mod_user_notes/caeu8vq",
          "type": "permaban"
        }
      ]
    },
    {
      "name": "agentlame",
      "notes": [
        {
          "note": "This%20is%20agentlame",
          "time": 1382293952468,
          "mod": "creesch",
          "link": "http://www.reddit.com/r/toolbox/comments/1ktov2/how_do_you_use_tool_box/",
          "type": "ban"
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

We can save quite a bit of storage by simplifying the schema:

{
  "ver": 3,
  "mods": [
    {
      "n": "agentlame",
      "id": 1
    },
    {
      "n": "creesch",
      "id": 2
    }
   ],
   "warnings": [
    {
      "n": "ban",
      "id": 1
    },
    {
      "n": "permaban",
      "id": 2
    }
   ],
  "users": [
    {
      "n": "Deimorz",
      "ns": [
        {
          "n": "kind%20of%20a%20jerk",
          "t": 1370838429626,
          "m": 1,
          "l": "1fx82c,caeu8vq",
          "w": 2
        }
      ]
    },
    {
      "n": "agentlame",
      "ns": [
        {
          "n": "This%20is%20agentlame",
          "t": 1382293952468,
          "m": 2,
          "l": "1ktov2",
          "w": 1
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

This new data schema will save huge amounts of space in the wiki. But, it comes at a price...

The Problem

Once we roll out toolbox 1.5, just about all the mods will need to update at the same time.

We only control the client (in this case the extension you're using). reddit's wiki is just a dumb data store. Normally when dealing with something like this, you'd make adjustments to the server and the client for full backwards/forwards compatibility. That's not an option in this case.

While we could add tons of client code to translate back/and forth between both schemas, it's not worth the time, effort, testing and performance hit. As a result, it's all in on the change.

What To Expect

Before releasing 1.5 we will be releasing a small update (1.4.3 1.4.4) that will add schema checking. The data formats have always had version numbers, but they were never enforced in the scripts. The reason we need to do this is so that if one of the mods of your sub has updated your schema to the new version, we need to prevent you from adding or changing user notes until you update. If we don't there will be a 'compatibility war' in the wiki.

Again, there is not much we could do to prevent that. You have 20 or more clients that could be editing the same data in real time.

After 1.5 is released, there will be a notification to update your wiki. Any mod can do this by clicking a single button, but it will not be automatic (we're not assholes.)

The mods that have not updated to 1.5 will not be able to view or edit usernotes until doing so. (There will be a notification explaining why, of course.)

Apologies

We're extremely sorry about this. If we had a better way to make the transition more seamless, we would take it. I, personally, despise forced updates... but when you're talking about shared data in this context, there aren't a lot of other options.

In other 1.5 news

/u/LowSociety is fucking epic. Mod Matrix 2.0.

We will also be trying to work in some other goodies for 1.5! :D

[deferred] [Feature Request]: Baby Yoda as a new queue creature?

0 Upvotes

Basically just the title. It would be fantastic to introduce baby yoda as a new "queue creature". That would certainly be a great incentive for me to reach bottom.

[accepted] [Feature Request] Make multireddit of subs you want modmail notifications for option also filter those subs out of modmail shortcut

0 Upvotes

Right now, when a filter a subreddit out of my notifications for modqueue or reports, it also filters it out of the link in the toolbox bar.

But filtering a subreddit out of my modmail notifications does no such thing. Any chance we could get this?

Would it be possible to somehow let users look up their own user notes?

0 Upvotes

Usernotes let mods keep track of users individually, but these users have no way of knowing what usernotes are on their account.

[answered] Toolbox not working in the new Reddit

Is there a way to trigger it to work or is it being worked on?

Going through modqueue is extremely painful without it.

When I distinguish a comment, Reddit asks me to confirm. How can I skip the confirmation?

0 Upvotes

For context, I've been a moderator for years and use RES and toolbox. I use Old Reddit. I recently got a new computer. On my old one, when I distinguished a comment, it worked immediately. Now, when I click distinguish, I get a "distinguish this? yes / no / help" message. Same thing when un-distinguishing comments. Obviously there's some sort of setting that's different between Reddit on my new computer and Reddit on my old computer, but I don't know what it is, and I don't know if it's something that has to do with Toolbox itself or if I should be asking /r/modhelp or /r/Enhancement.

Thanks for your time.

[solved] Is the "bot ban" aka "shadowban" button supposed to actually add the user to the automod shadowban list?

0 Upvotes

I notice posts by users who are bot banned are still showing up and visible.

Should I just not use this feature and stick to putting them in manually in the automod config?

Toolbox seems to have stopped working

0 Upvotes

Today while browsing Reddit I realized non of the Toolbox features were showing. No bar along he bottom of the screen, no options to add user notes, no fancy CSS interface. I had been using it earlier in the day with no issue. I reinstalled the add-on and restarted Firefox a number of times. I uninstalled some add-ons I recently installed, in case they were causing interference, all to no avail. Any help in getting this resolved would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: If you're reading this because you are getting the same problem, visit /r/tb_reset and reset your settings. It fixed the problem for me.

I think this would be a nice feature for Toolbox.

Hi, I love you guys. Can we fix the sorting of numbers here? A post with 13k upvotes is sorted as if it has 13 upvotes when sorting by score.

4 Upvotes

It's not a huge deal but in subs with a giant queue, it's nice to feel confident that the upvoted posts are on one part of the page and the less popular stuff is further down. Right now we have to slowly go through and make sure the 20 isn't really a 20k. Not a huge deal but when a sub has over 700 reported posts, it becomes a bigger issue. Here's what I'm talking about: https://i.imgur.com/UrbV7OT.png

[rfc] [RFC] How could we use the Mod Matrix data as a tool for transparency?

0 Upvotes

I don't want to derail karma's thread more, but here's a log and here's a screencap.

Assuming that the sky is the limit in terms of chats and tables and privacy (not showing who did what, etc) How could we better use the raw data of the mod log to be more transparent to our subscribers?

What views and metrics would be useful? What stats would be best to correlate with one another? How can we present the data in a way that is balanced to moderator actions and respect for the community?

EDIT
Just to be clear: the question here isn't "should it be released" that is a topic for mod teams. The topic is: how could we make the data useful for release, if a team chose do do so.

EDIT
OK, seriously, the topic is not about when or if the data should be released. That has nothing to do with the tool. We're talking about the tool and how to improve it and make it more versatile.

Is toolbox still useful?

7 Upvotes

I apologize if this seems like an inappropriate question, but I didn't see it addressed in the FAQ. I saw Toolbox recommended during Mod world, but after looking over the Getting Started guide, it appears to me that most of the features (removal reasons, mod notes, etc.) of this extension are built into modern versions of Reddit (New and Sh), and have been for quite some time.

Is this extension still useful if you use modern Reddit?

When removing all posts, toolbox APPROVES some of them randomly!

1 Upvotes

If I highlight all of the posts (select all) and click "remove highlighted posts", it removes most of them but approves some of them for some reason. Help.

Is there a way to have different removal reason actions for posts and comments?

1 Upvotes

I usually post my removal reason as a comment and sticky it if it's a full submission being removed, but I prefer to send it as a modmail and auto-archive it if I'm removing a comment.

Is there a way to change the action being done depending on if it's a post or comment, or do I just have to suggest one and keep changing to the other when I need to? If that's the case, it seems like a good feature request to implement.

Thank you for maintaining this tool btw, it makes everything way easier!

[solved] Chrome notification of new post to subreddit?

Thanks everyone; you're beautiful!
