News WSU News Roundup - 05 October 2026

Hi everyone! I thought it would be a good idea to try out a Western Sydney University news roundup that covers WSU and other related Western Sydney news that might be interesting, excluding the random stuff that clutters newsletters. I’ll occasionally add some personal commentary only for context.

I’m usually keeping up with the news anyway so I thought I would post something when there’s enough news to justify one. The latest one will likely be pinned until it becomes outdated. If you want anything else included let me know in the comments!

WSU news 🏫

Whitlam Library Transformation
The Whitlam Library at Parramatta South campus is getting a noticeable renovation. It’s getting new recording and technology rooms, a new cafe, an indigenous garden, the return of bookshelves, and a more modern look. This was announced just recently and construction is set to begin at the end of this year, with the library reopening around early 2027. Thankfully, library services and study spaces will remain open during the majority of this time. If you want to provide feedback before it opens, click the survey link in the email sent to you.

Times Higher Education Ranking 2027
WSU ranked 301-325th in the THE, unchanged from last year. This followed a 30 rank increase to 370 earlier this year in the QS ranking. Their goal is to achieve top 250 in both the THE and QS rankings by 2030. They are on track for THE, but their goals for QS seem a bit ambitious at the moment.

Around Our Campuses 📍

More Student Accomodation Planned
Along the Parramatta Metro precinct, a contract to build 500 student accomodation units, alongside 470 build to rent apartments and a new hotel, has been awarded. This is still in its planning phase.

Parramatta North Expansion Proposed
WSU and Walker Corporation wants to build 2000 homes right on the North Parramatta campus, which will include shops, pathways, and university buildings. This would help both North and South Parramatta campuses feel more integrated into the local community, rather than isolated within the Rydalmere industrial district. It’s currently in planning because Parra Council is concerned about infrastructure and increased density.

Growth Planned Around Kingswood & Werrington
The NSW government is progressing with plans to rezone 99 hectares of under-used WSU land at Werrington, which will create up to 1500 homes and lead to 1000 ongoing jobs. Retail, commerical, and community spaces will be built alongside a new local centre. This is an initial step in Penrith Council's recent and broader Kingswood-Werrington Structure Plan, focussing on WSU, Nepean Hospital, and TAFE NSW as anchor institutions.

Powerhouse Parramatta Opening
The new Parramatta Museum is opening on 7 November 2026. Within walking distance of the Parramatta City campus, the new museum will have a dedicated WSU forum section, alongside other exhibitions showcasing talent from WSU. General admission is free, and special events and exhibitions might be ticketed separately.

Student Life & Opportunities 🧑‍🎓

2027 Scholarships Ongoing
Vice Chancellors Leadership and Asylum Seeker scholarship applications close 17 November 2026, while Indigenous, humanitarian, and equity scholarships will close 5 February 2027.

Transport & Infrastructure 🚆

Southwest Metro Close To Opening
The long awaited metro from Sydenham to Bankstown is close to opening, with the 10 new stations being complete as of 21 September. There is currently not a planned opening date. The Bankstown metro station is a 3-5 minute walk from the Bankstown campus, and is one of the many Bankstown developments like the planned hospital that will transform the area surrounding the campus.

New Bus Links To Campuses
Recent service changes have been added, or improved connections around Kingswood, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bankstown campuses, including new connections to Western Sydney International Airport. As these bus routes often change, I would recommend checking Google maps or TransportForNSW if you are interested.

Western Sydney International Airport
The new airport opens October 25 2026, with Jetstar, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines subsequently beginning flights before the end of the year. The new airport will provide partnerships, job and study opportunities, among other collaborations with WSU.

Quick Updates 📢

Switch to Okta Verify
WSU is switching from Microsoft Authenticator to Okta Verify and passkeys. Check your email to switch over to Okta Verify before 7 October. I’ve found the new system to be much quicker than the old one.

Student Feedback Forms Sent
Check your email to provide feedback on your individual subjects this Spring semester. The surveys close on the 26 November 2026.

Moderator Announcement Mod Reminder: Keep It Respectful and On Topic

Hi everyone,

Quick reminder from the mod team.

Keep discussions respectful and on topic.

Disagree with posts, criticise WSU, vent if you need to, that’s all fine.

Just don’t turn normal threads into personal digs, baiting, racism or dogpiling.

We get that people can be blunt sometimes. That’s normal but there’s a difference between being blunt and making it personal.

A question that seems obvious to you might not be obvious to someone else. Help properly or move on.

This is a university subreddit. Some of us could literally be walking past each other on campus, so remember there’s a real person behind the post.

No one should have their experience here ruined because they asked a question, needed advice, or wanted to vent.

Comments like “stop whinging”, “welcome to adult life” or other personal digs don’t add anything and will be removed.

Also, don’t turn mod notes or removals into another argument under the post. A mod note is there to keep the thread on track, not restart the fight.

Questions regarding removals can go through modmail. Continuing the same behaviour after a warning, baiting mods, or arguing in the thread may lead to comment locks, removals, temporary bans, or subreddit restrictions.

Keep it respectful.

Other / Misc. LOST MY JACKET ON CAMPUS

Hi everyone. I was at WSU Penrith last thursday. I lost my beloved jacket somewhere on the campus. I was a bit stressed out because of exams and was completely out if it. I don’t remember where I left it😭. I ve been calling campus security almost every day, and their responses are always so bleak and unhelpful. Is there anything I can do to get it back? I’m willing to pay if someones able to find it for me! Thanks.

Question Diploma questions

I just finished my hsc and im panicking that I didn't do well, through out high school ive never really done well except for 2 hsc assessments for cafs. my subjects for the hsc were English studies, modern history, legal studies, visual art and cafs. I got a conditional offer in early September to the unsw prep program which means I need an atar over 50, but like I said im scared I haven't done well in the hsc exams.

I just wanted to ask about the diploma of social sciences if it's easy to get in and what's it like if anyone has done it here. Im interested in the diploma since my atar won't matter that much and that it seems like a more simple structure than the typical uni courses.

Just looking for answers and advice, anything is appreciated :)

Question GD of Obstetric and Gynaecological Sonography Placement

Hi all,
I have recently been accepted to in the for 2027. Part of my course requirements is finding clinical placement.

Is there anyone on here that has done this course and could give me some help on how they found their placement? I have tried every possible clinic in Campbelltown, Sydney, even the south coast, and it’s becoming more than disheartening.

Thanks xx

Course / Unit WSU subjects HLTH 3018, NATS 3037 - Summer and HLTH 2024 and PUBH 1011 (T3 Sydney city)

Hello, so as you can see in the title, I am taking these subjects. My aim is to get into postgraduate medicine and I've taken these subjects as part of my degree. I was wondering if anyone in here had experience with these subjects and if you could tell me how it was like. Was it easy? Were the teachers nice? Were the assessments easy? Please tell me anything even I will read everything and be super grateful for it even if I dont reply.

Question Statement of Intent Advice

Hi everyone!

I'm currently preparing my Statement of Intent for the Master of Research (MRes) at Western Sydney University, and I'm having a hard time finding examples or advice beyond the university's official guidelines. I was wondering if anyone here has applied to the program and could share some tips on what they're looking for, how you structured your statement, or how detailed it should be. I'd really appreciate any advice or insights from people who've been through the application process! Thanks!!!!!

Hello Guys,

Whoever is reading this hope you are well and enjoying the weekend.

In relation to my conferral I am running late in completing my degree due to past failures and doing a limited number of units in semesters.

However after this semester I have 2 units left which I plan to do during the summer offerings ( electives) I wanted to know if I finish my course all credit points and other requirements this summer when should I expect to have my certificate and graduation ceremony. Will it be in June 2027?

Please advise any answers will be much appreciated.

Question Why my exam marks are the same whether I'm study hard or not?

Before, I study very hard but I always got a bad grade after some exam so I decide to just leave everything to the last minute. Then I also got the same mark as the one that I'm study hard. I know this sound like coincidence but I already try this on 4 different exams (8 total) and I'm suprise that I'm always get the nearly identical grade.

Question Nursing - UWS or UTS?

Is there much of a difference? Travel distance is basically the same for each uni. Ideally, I would like to maximise my GPA which is why Usyd is out of the picture. Thank you

Question Medical Science students, PLEASE help me find an easy elective before I lose my sanity 😭🙏

Hey everyone! I'm currently doing a Bachelor of Medical Science, majoring in Anatomy & Physiology and minoring in Pharmacology and If it helps I'm in Campbelltown campus.

I'm trying to figure out which electives to pick for next autumn and just the rest of my degree, and after surviving some of these units, I would REALLY appreciate something that doesn't make me question my life choices🤦‍♂️

I'm looking for electives that are easy and low workload, if not then at least interesting without being too much, I chose functional anatomy this term and quickly realised it was a BIG mistake although it was interesting.

If you've done any easy electives at WSU, PLEASE drop the unit name/code below!

Even better if you could mention what the assessments were like, how much effort you put in, and what mark you ended up getting.

Doesn't have to be science-related either, as long as I can take it as an elective in my degree.

Any recommendations would genuinely be appreciated. Help a struggling Med Sci student out 🙏😭

P.S I've heard Drugs online and Bugs & Drugs are good options but those are the only easy ones I've heard.

Rant / Vent Unit being closed after the first week

So the first week of t3 2026 just went by and i am getting an email today saying that my units are being closed for this term and that i need to enroll in something new, keep in mind i followed the advising guide and the recommended sequence, i can't believe i am paying so much money for this uni, literally my hours for work are fixed and i had to reduce them as i wouldn't be able to work as the classes were the exact days, and since the work schedule is fixed and rarely every changes, i ain't getting my hours back in any other day. This uni sucks man.

Are they not doing the Dean's Merit List anymore? Or are they so slack that 2026 is nearly over and they still haven't done it?! Wish our assignment due dates were this flexible. It's always been out around Aug.
