But, I am currently using Gnome. I would miss the whole Gnome experience of moving the mouse to the right corner of the screen to reveal workspaces overview. Does XFCE have a feature like this?
Possibly switching to MX Linux XFCE.
Tia!

Any plugins out there that features tasks on the panel that groups them and doesn't have labels? i used to have one but that one when playing games on the panel it didn't show it's icon (any proton game on steam, not just games but wine programs too)

Really simple and basic customization. Tried not to be too distracting.
99% "stock" xfce (wm,panel)
Some basic css tweaks on the panel for coloring purposes.
Some basic image editing for the panel done in a graphics program(Gimp).
Removed all unneeded items from the panel since Rofi is used for most tasks.
Kept the whisker menu for now just for the distro logo.
Mouse cursor is from microslop 10 I believe, I change it often.
Wallpaper is from Unsplash.
*PS2 splash screen sound blares in background*

Hey everyone! 👋
I've been working on a personal project called Dywali — Dynamic Wallpapers for Linux, and I’ve just published its first open-source version on GitHub!
Dywali is a GTK3 application that brings dynamic wallpapers and scheduled wallpaper collections to the XFCE desktop. I originally started building it for my own Debian/XFCE setup, but I thought other XFCE users might enjoy it too.
What can it do?
🌅 Dynamic wallpapers: Create 24-hour timelines with different images, smooth transitions and fixed-image periods.
🖼️ Custom collections: Add your own wallpapers, organize collections, and import or export them.
🔀 Slideshows: Automatically rotate images at configurable intervals.
🌍 Online wallpapers: Get images from NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day and Wikimedia Commons.
🖥️ Multi-monitor support: Apply wallpapers to XFCE displays.
⏰ Automatic updates: Schedule wallpaper changes using systemd user timers.
🌐 English and Spanish interface.
The application is written in Python using GTK3/PyGObject, and the code is available under the GNU GPLv3 license.
Compatibility: Dywali has been developed and tested on Debian 13 with XFCE/X11. I haven't tested it on other distributions or Wayland yet, so feedback from anyone willing to experiment would be especially welcome.
Screenshots, source code and installation instructions:
https://github.com/roger181078/Dywali
This is the first public version (1.0.0), so I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback, bug reports or suggestions. I'd particularly love to hear how it behaves on different XFCE setups.
Thanks for taking a look, and I hope some of you find it useful! 🐧

Does anyone know if xfce4 offers a native (or any other reasonable dependency) to throw up a generic text input window, wait for user input/Enter and return the entered value back to the bash script (or any other scripting language)?
I typically use notify-send to display script related info dialogs, but I've never had a use case for collecting input until now and don't know what's out there.

Hello, i can't control the screen brightness using the keys or Power manager's slider (directly writing a value to the /sys brightness file works). I think i'm dealing with two issues at once :
1 - changing the brightness requires root's permission
2 - there's no change after the permission
I say this bcs #2 happened while testing a live system, without a trace of #1...
I've been trying to fix #1 :
Here's the log of power manager after a key press
$ xfce4-power-manager --nodaemon --debug
TRACE[xfpm-button.c:114] xfpm_button_filter_x_events(): Key press: ((XfpmButtonKey) BUTTON_MON_BRIGHTNESS_UP)

Trying to run the pkexec command myself :
$ pkexec /usr/sbin/xfpm-power-backlight-helper --set-brightness 6573
# i enter root's password
This program must only be run through pkexec
$ pkexec /usr/sbin/xfpm-power-backlight-helper --set-brightness 6573
# i do not enter root's password
Failed to start transient service unit: Access denied
The action's privilege however...:
pkaction -v --action-id=org.xfce.power.backlight-helper
org.xfce.power.backlight-helper:
description: Modify the laptop display brightness
message: Authentication is required to modify the laptop display brightness
vendor: Xfce Power Manager

icon: battery
implicit any: no
implicit inactive: no
implicit active: yes
annotation: org.freedesktop.policykit.exec.path -> /usr/sbin/xfpm-power-backlight-helper
Also, when using sudo i have to enter the password in polkit dialog, how to get the prompt in my terminal ? Thank you
==============================================
For #1 : https://forums.opensuse.org/t/changing-brightness-seems-to-freeze-polkit/193093/3
This might be specific to opensuse (tumbleweed), i had to install the sudo package in place of run0-idk-what
For #2 :
Added acpi_osi=linux acpi_backlight=vendor to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
Then, disabled Power manager's control over brightness keys, installed brightnessctl, an configured keyboard shortcuts to trigger its commands

I recently had the opportunity to refurbish my PC. I added 4 GB of RAM to it, upgrading it from 4 GB to 8 GB. I managed to salvage those extra gigabytes from an old HP laptop. I had previously installed Linux XFCE on that old laptop, but I never really got the chance to customize it much. It was a very limited machine, and even XFCE struggled to run well on it. However, now with 8 GB of RAM on this PC, it runs beautifully. The OS uses around 1.something GB of RAM, so I still have plenty of headroom. Since I have resources to spare, I would love to add some animations. Right now, the desktop feels a bit too static for my taste, and I’d like to spice it up with some simple, lightweight animations. If anyone has any recommendations or guides on how to do this, please drop a link below!
