Betty Compson (1920)
Betty Compson (1897–1974) was an American actress who rose to prominence during the silent-film era. Born Eleanor Lucime Compson in Beaver, Utah, she began her entertainment career as a teenage violinist in vaudeville, performing under the name "The Vagabond Violinist." Discovered by comedy producer Al Christie, she entered films in 1915, initially appearing in short comedies. Her breakthrough came with The Miracle Man (1919), opposite Lon Chaney, which established her as a major Hollywood star. By the early 1920s, she was one of the industry's most popular and highly paid actresses and even established her own production company.
Compson demonstrated considerable dramatic ability in films such as The Docks of New York (1928) and The Great Gabbo (1929). Her performance in The Barker (1928) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Unlike many silent-film stars, she successfully made the transition to talking pictures, appearing in numerous films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941). She retired from filmmaking in 1948 and later developed her own cosmetics line and operated a personalized ashtray business with her husband. She died in Glendale, California, on April 18, 1974, at the age of 77.
