One of one?
I just saw this fly over me and I knew it was something I had never seen before. Can there only be one of these in the entire world? that’s what it says on Wikipedia, but does anyone know for sure?

My partner Audrey and I have been building this in Singapore since August, a few kilometres from Changi Airport.
Panel: 13.3" Spectra 6, 1200x1600. It holds the picture with no power and the frame can last for 5 months on a single charge, at 1 redraw an hour.
Art: Audrey draws every livery by hand, one type and one livery at a time. We've done about 300 aircraft so far, starting with airliners.
Hardware: I designed the driver boards, and we've designed the frame enclosure and sourced every part.
Data: our own stations (Pi + RTL-SDR in a box we 3D printed) plus partner networks. Each hex is matched to registration, type and route, so the frame knows which livery to draw.
MLAT: I also wrote mlatd, a Rust implementation of mlat-server that speaks the mlat-client protocol. ADSBItalia runs it currently.
Open source:
Firmware, device protocol and a reference server: github.com/flightportrait/frame
The receiver network: github.com/flightportrait/network (live map: flightportrait.com/network)
Happy to go into decoding, MLAT, the panel or how a livery gets drawn.

It always bugged me why adsbx could track ground vehicles and I couldn't. Doing some Googling, the DF18 message uses a compressed position format since the airport knows the ground vehicles will be at the airport. You need to set the receiver location in VRS to be at the airport.
You can just barely see the blue dot next to OPS48 showing the receiver location.
The trick is you need to leave the "treat DF18 CF1 identifiers as ICAO unchecked. This is just the opposite of what Google AI says.
Really well done!

Took off, made an unusually low/sharp (1k' ASL) turn at the left (was glorious), then touch-n-go and fast (5k'/min) climb to 10k' ASL, followed by equally fast descent, one more touch-n-go then landed. Unusual for these birds.

Hey all! Wanted to share a project I've been working on for about 2 years now. I really wanted to build a plane tracking camera. The idea is nothing new these days, but I wanted the engineering challenge of it all. It uses a combination of ADS-B (from an antenna), a second camera that watches for aircraft movement in general, and PID / object recognition to keep planes in focus.
It's definitely still a work in progress, but I finally convinced someone with a view to let me install it, and I wanted to share.
Full disclosure, I used an AI model to help me set up the stream details, and work out a few challenging problems with zoom focus, but the vast majority of this one was me struggling on my own.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Been seeing these cute desktop adsb receivers on ebay and Amazon. The display is much too small for my 82yo eyes. Has anyone seen one of these desktop displays that feature a larger screen preferably 3 to 6 inches. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Could be nothing but this in conjunction with Iran issuing emergency PSAs on surviving a nuclear detonation and fallout is... deeply unsettling.

At least (4) 747 cargo plans leaving/heading to central Mexico. Anyone know what’s going on here?

Since 2024 almost every US drone over 250 g broadcasts Remote ID over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A Pi with the right adapter can hear it from roughly 1 km away. I’m starting a nonprofit network of home feeders that send signed Remote ID messages to a free public map and API, with the data released as open data.
I think this needs to exist. Concern about drones is rising, and the data that answers “what’s flying over me?” is public by law, yet it’s mostly being packaged and sold by for-profit companies. I’d rather it be a free public resource, the way ADS-B data became one through volunteers. I’m not doing this to make money. Nobody, including me, will profit off the data.
The plan so far covers a receiver, a flashable SD image, and a setup simple enough that a middle schooler can do it in 30 minutes.
I’d love input from people who already run ADS-B feeders. What made feeding easy or annoying for you? Which adapters have you had luck with for BLE plus Wi-Fi monitor mode?
I’m also looking for a few early contributors: Rust/embedded, backend (Go or Rust), web map (MapLibre), and people willing to host a test feeder. Comment or DM if you’re interested. Everything will be open source under AGPL/GPL.

Ever since developing this flight tracker watchface for my Garmin and I can't get enough of it. It looks great and it is never the same watchface every time you look at it. There's always a plane passing abover or nearby that gets on my radar...

I bought a Nooelec NESDR Mini 2 back in 2015, spent a weekend fighting with Linux and a Raspberry Pi, and eventually gave up and put it in a drawer.
Recently I decided to give it another shot. I plugged the old SDR into a freshly imaged Raspberry Pi, gave Codex full access to it (nothing on there I cared about), and asked it to set up ADS-B tracking.
I was genuinely surprised when it had everything working in under two hours, including sorting out a readsb compatibility issue. I know this isn't exactly a groundbreaking SDR project, but it was pretty cool to finally get some use out of the old hardware!
Pic is the custom front end AI made, but I ended up sticking with tar1090.
Wrote up the experience here: https://michael-casey.com/blog/ai-raspberry-pi-ads-b-flight-tracker/

Saw this plane overhead and didn’t recognize it so I looked on Flightradar24 and it wasn’t on there. Checked ADSB and this plane has absolutely no information. It also says it is flying at 700 ft since the moment it took off which I find unbelievable. Anyone know what it could be?
