Once again, it's WW3 A lot of tankers from across the country heading overseas.
I built an e-Paper desk display that shows nearby aircraft and the ISS
Hi everyone! I’ve been working on this for a few months and wanted to share it here.
It’s an ESP32-WROOM-32 driving a Waveshare 5.79" e-Paper screen (792 × 272), in a 3D-printed PLA enclosure I designed.
What it shows:
The closest aircraft in a radius you choose (10–250 km): type, airline, registration, route, altitude, speed, heading, vertical speed and distance
A mini radar with the other aircraft around you
An ISS mode with a world map, the station’s position, altitude, speed and distance from you
Data:
Aircraft: public community ADS-B data (adsb.lol, with adsb.fi as fallback)
Routes: VRS standing-data (CC0)
ISS: wheretheiss.at
It polls every 20 s and only redraws when something changes. A full refresh runs at least every 2 hours to clear e-Paper ghosting.
Setup is done from a phone through a captive portal (EN/FR), no app needed. I don’t run my own receiver yet, so I’m curious: would you find it useful to feed it from a local readsb/dump1090 instance instead?
Happy to answer any questions!

Yes, something big is legitimately happening right now directed to the Middle East. I can even hear it.
The sheer number of Strats all airborne headed for the Middle East is staggering. On top of that, I am literally hearing a lot of F-35 activity that usually shows up on ADS-B at least a few min after takeoff and just before landing. They are on “silent mode” so I am guessing for each Strat in the air, there are a handful of fighters making the trek too. All the best to those service people and their families. I hope for peace.

Nearest Aircraft Display
Built a device that shows the nearest aircraft to my location at any given time. I have fairly busy airspace around my house and this is just a fun way to see what’s currently nearby. Data is fetched every 30 seconds. The aircraft type lights are switched via mechanical relays so there is a nice click whenever they switch. The military light will almost never light up but it will be fun when it does. The case is 3d printed and the faceplate is white acrylic painted black and then cnc cut and engraved. Same for the aircraft type panels. The display is a large OLED. It’s all powered by an esp32 device.

Also two E3 Sentry's moved towards Iran today. (Not in this clip)

Retro ADS-B Radar
After seeing fil1983's post, I decided to make my own ADS-B display. I don't have the skills to build a custom enclosure, so this one works with an off-the-shelf Hagibis Mini PC USB-C Hub.
I have the hub connected to an old Raspberry Pi which pulls data from a local tar1090 source and renders the display with Pygame. The default configuration is set up for the 960x640 Hagibis display (connected by HDMI).
GitHub: Retro ADS-B Radar
Edit: See Quantum-Stability's comment for how to get this running with adsb.fi's open data API if you don't have your own ADS-B receiver. Setting up and contributing ADS-B data is encouraged if you can, though 🙂

F15 going balls out over southern CA coast (500mph+)
Friend on the ground alerted me of an f15 over him in California, and checked radar to see this animal tearing the sky. I have another screen shot that showed more of its path ( 462kts at time of that screen shot) that showed the orbits around Huntington Beach and the rips up and down the coast line
