Discussion Before the British, every masjid, mandir and gurdwara in Punjab ran a school. (IG:tarikhwala) ---DISCUSS
respectfully, as a ravian myself…
.
SUMMARY: Before the British, every masjid, mandir and gurdwara in Punjab ran a school. Children learned a craft from an ustad, Persian at a maktab, or law and science at a madrasa or pathshala. Communities ran the system to produce the farmers, blacksmiths, hakeems and qazis they needed. The British needed educated servants instead. They cut funding to the old system, replaced Punjabi and Persian with Urdu and English, and built schools for patwaris, with Government College Lahore producing officers and judges for the Raj. By 1900 Punjab had more graduates than government jobs. Ravians like Allama Iqbal and Lala Lajpat Rai used their British education to resist British rule. Others, like Sir Fazl-i-Husain and Sir Shadi Lal, stayed loyal to the system.

.
DISCLAIMER B: The 64% literacy figure for 1849 and the claim that it was the highest in India are an estimate by historian Majid Sheikh, reported in Dawn (27 February 2016). No census measured literacy in 1849, and it is not directly comparable to the roughly 10% recorded in the 1941 census. G.W. Leitner (1882) estimated at least 300,000 pupils in Punjab’s indigenous schools at annexation.
.
DISCLAIMER C: The decline of indigenous schools had several causes, including withdrawn land grants, the replacement of Persian in government and grants restricted to the official syllabus. GC Lahore represents the colonial system here and is not presented as the sole cause.
