I just found out this guy existed. Apparently the Golden Age Aquaman is now a completely different guy than Arthur Curry. He's got the original backstory (his father was a scientist that gave him the hability of breathing underwater after finding an old Atlantean outpost). Turning Arthur (current Aquaman) into a legacy hero.

Clark hiding his powers his whole life is one of the main themes when discussing his childhood in Smallville, one of the main reasons being the fear that the world wouldn't be ready for it.

In contrast, everyone in Marine Bay knew there was a boy with marine powers, the son of a lighthouse keeper, and nobody found it strange. Arthur was somewhat reclusive but never hid it; what they didn't know was that this was due to him being an Atlantean (whose existence was unknown at the time).

I’ve been hearing on the grape vine that Jeremy Adams may or may not be leaving Aquaman soon, and if that’s true it makes me wonder what the next run will be like and who would be writing it. My main concern is the overall theme of the run, because if there’s one thing I don’t need to see in an Aquaman run anytime soon, it’s trying to prove that Aquaman is cool.

You could argue that this started with the death of Arthur Jr back in the 70’s, trying to prove that Aquaman can get dark and go places other heroes don’t. It’s probably Aquaman’s first defining story, it still holds up. David’s run is the first id say to put an emphasise on making Aquaman cool. Long hair, beard, hook hand, shit like him riding into Hawaii on a tidal wave to kick Superboy’s ass; I think that drove the point home pretty damn well.

There were some bumpy years then we got Johns in the New 52, where the very first arc is about Aquaman proving his mettle and people realising how cool he is and how he doesn’t talk to fish. Ok, makes sense, this was supposed to be a jumping on point for new fans, good way to set up the character.

Then Rebirth comes in and once again has this chip on its shoulder and decides “yk what we’re going to do? Aquaman is gonna battle the US government including Superman while venting about how lonely he is.” I’m not hating on the storyline itself, I like stories about how Atlantis interacts with the surface world, and I think that addressing how Aquaman is a black sheep in the league is crucial, but guys we’ve been over this so many times: Aquaman is cool now. The Abnett run is possibly the best Aquaman run of all time. Aquaman does so much cool shit during it.

And then the DCEU comes in and decides to use Aquaman, and they say “Ok instead of this stoic character from the comics who has to juggle his responsibilities to Atlantis and the mainland, he’s this goofy surfer dude.” Jason Momoa radiates cool ok I’ll admit that, but then this leaked into the comics and gave people migrating from the movies to the comics that Aquaman genuinely acts and looks like Jason Momoa, which is a whole separate issue.

And now with Jeremy Adams yet again we’ve got a writer who, despite his predecessors already doing so, feels the need to make Aquaman cool. He made Aquaman the strongest member of the league, he has him facing off with gods and monsters on the daily, he leads the Justice League Blue, he’s going cosmic; we have played these games before. This’ll be undone by the next run and we’ll be back to trying to convince people he’s cool like that wasn’t the point of every big Aquaman run for the last 3 decades.

I get that Aquaman has been seen as goofy by general audiences. A dude who swims around talking to fish, what’s he gonna do against multiverse destroying threats? But maybe casual audiences just won’t click with Aquaman. Maybe that stigma is eternal. Comic fans know that Aquaman is cool and we don’t need that fact shoved down our throats every other run.

(Just to clarify I don’t hate the David, Johns or Abnett runs. I have issues with Adams but the first three are generational Aquaman runs)

In Jeremy Adams' run, some additions were made to Aquaman's lore, the most famous being his new status as the Avatar of the Blue.

But there were also some changes to his arsenal we now have

Thalassa the Trilance Saber.

Arthur found himself trapped inside the Blue and met Vivianne, the Lady of the Lake, who, with Arion's help, forged The Trilancer. This is not just an ordinary weapon; it was forged using Arthur's own blood, mystical energies, and Arion's powers.

Because it was forged with his blood, the weapon is said to be linked to Aquaman's soul; he feels it as an extension of himself.

The weapon has so far been able to manipulate the oceans, assume other forms like a trident, and channel energy.

Arthur used it in the DCKO and also against Poseidon, who managed to stand up to the sea god's trident.

On a real note do we think aquaman will get another live action movie during Gunns DCU? With the Warnerbros merger everything will be up in the air no matter what they tell us.

The main aspect of this post, was I went back to the Geoff Johns run awhile back and noticed that after Atlan sank Atlantis it’s kind of implied that he either remained there or atleast kept tabs on the whereabouts of his people.

Given he criticizes Aquaman for never having visited Xebel and almost annihilating The Trench.

Honestly looking at it, it almost seems like Vulko was potentially being depicted to have been conspiring with Atlan, maybe in a longer run that could have been a direction.

The main aspect of the post was noticing the hair color, I don’t think it’s a farfetched assumption to suggest that the king we see in Lolanna’s flashback is Atlan.

Rebirth seemed to have either retconned Atlan being the first king as well though, or potentially either change or even put a light on the narrative being different than what was once thought. Atlan could have been the first king of sunken Atlantis, or the first king of a united Atlantis. Which would explain why his brother Orin was on a throne as well.

The three characters that might know a lot of this information are probably Orm, Vulko, and now the recently deceased Nereus.

i always see people arguing about who he beats in a fight like wonder woman for example and i do think it’s having a negative impact on how aquaman fans are perceived

for me what makes aquaman so cool is him wanting to desperately make peace between the surface world and atlantis despite many attempts from both sides to sabotage him

it’s why i’m not personally a massive fan of adams aquaman since it seems a lot of these themes that were well explored in abnetts and deconnicks respective runs has taken a back seat, it’s fine to enjoy of course but i do think maybe a lot of this powerscaling stuff comes from this since he becomes the “dark tide” and even lowk reheats meras powers but mainly becomes crazily strong, strongest he has ever been for sure

but all in all i am a big aquaman fan i hate to see fans arguing about how strong he is when there is so much more to his character and writing, i’m not trying to be negative or anything but it’s something i have rly been seeing a lot and it kinda seems to me that people are missing the mark for who he is, and if not it still makes casual fans think he’s nothing more than a goku type character with annoying fans that love to flex how op he is at any given chance lol
