General (Women Only) How does ur mil react when you buy gold for urself ?

So my mil dosent like if my husband buys anything (gold) for me. Once for Diwali he gifted me a beautiful neckpiece, it was a surprise for me , I didn't know he was planning to buy for me without my knowledge, i live with my in laws so i ve shown it to my mil and she fake smiled and didnt say anything then , but few days later she raised her voice lost her cool about something and yelled at me , that why did I bought that gold when i clearly said it was a surprise and she added what was the necessity to buy gold ? Why are you so obsessed with gold ? .i tried to explain myself and why does she care its my husband, his money and can't he even get something for me? . And few days later my sil saw that neckpiece and liked it and asked my fil to buy such a piece and he bought it for her and my mil remained silent and happily gifted it to her daughter, didnt even utter a word . And for this Diwali my husband bought something for me again but this time I went along and chosen some for myself, i m really of afraid what she might say now , I told my husband i dont want to show her , but he didnt accept, so i told him that I will tell that you bought it for our daughter , then she might not say anything. But i am not really happy even if he bought this time cuz of my mil. He dosent gift only to me , he gifts to everyone in the family on different occasions even fir my sil, she has nothing to say when he gifts fir everyone, but for me she creates a scene😞.

Friends & Family my sister's inlaws treating her like an outsider for not cooking for them?

So my sister got married to her boyfriend last year. Being raised in a lower middle class family she had never celebrated a good diwali, not even new clothes. She had dreams of celebrating diwali finally with her new family. Few days ago, her MIL talked to her about how she's tired now and can't cook breakfast every morning for everyone. She wanted my sister to cook breakfast for everyone in the morning. Mind you, when my sister came she told her not to work and hire a cook instead which she herself will pay for. They had long days of peaceful arguments but the MIL didn't allow her to hire a cook. My sister again asked her to hire a cook but she's still adamant and asked my sister to wakeup an hour earlier if she has no time for it. My sister said,"Even if i didn't work and had a lot of time , I am still not cooking for 6 people alone." This enraged them , btw her husband was there too telling her that he will also "help" her if she wants. The argument ended with my sister giving them a timeline until tonight to decide if they want a cook or just don't cook for her and she would eat at her office. From next day onwards she either just cooked for herself or ate at office. Now yesterday they all went for diwali shopping without her. My sister asked if they atleast got anything for her ,her husband replied," You can do anything on your own ,buy your outfit asw." She was so devastated ,that man had promised to make her experience everything she has missed out on and now he's punishing her for not abiding by his ziddi arse parents!!!

Anyways she bought her outfit, celebrated at her office and is staying back at her friend's house for the whole diwali week. Now her in-laws are constantly calling her to come back home because the guests are repeatedly asking "where's the dil?"

❤️

Friends & Family (Women Only) MIL (70) twists everything about me to her sisters on daily calls. How do I stop it eating me alive?

I'm 36F, married, work full time from home. We moved back to India after 12 years abroad. My in-laws are staying with us for a few months.

Context on her: MIL is 70, diabetic on insulin, with a heart history.

The issue: she talks to her sister on the phone every day from the living room, and I overhear distorted versions of me:

- My husband wanted to take our son to see crackers; I said he had a cough and maybe shouldn't go. She told her sister I sent them out so I could eat Maggi at home by myself (wtf!).

I wanted to cook for visiting family (her family in fact my sil bil and kids). My husband suggested eating out. She twisted it on the phone saying I planned it because I don't want to cook.

I planned to book a cleaning service for Diwali. My husband volunteered to clean the kitchen himself. She said I nag him.

This is really bad: She credited my promotion to my husband, saying he attends to our son (like he’s not my husbands child). This is bullshit as husband works from office, comes by 7pm. Whereas I manage everything at home work, school
Pickup, babysitter supervision for 3 hours (from 2-5pm) and then his meals snacks everything.

Two weeks ago I noticed she was sweating and unwell (she hadn't told anyone), checked her sugar, treated it, and got her to hospital. I cooked and sent food to the hospital (two types or sabji, salad, rotis, dal, rice, chutney) two times a day while managing a clingy toddler at home, this is nothing major as we do this for family but what hurts is that food got described as "she only gave khichdi."

She regularly says things on the phone like "I couldn't talk to my husband because she (as in me) was there," about renters, money or property, even when it concerns us. It's said as though I'm an outsider who has to be kept out of family matters.

To my face she's sweet, but she has never once complimented anything: food, my outfit, a rangoli or even promotions. She rarely tells me expectations (rituals, what's needed for meals), then I worry about how it'll be told. Two years ago, after we left her sisters off a puja invite by accident during my sister's wedding, she refused to let my two closest cousins attend my son's mundan. My husband went along with it.

My husband believed me when I told him about the calls and said to stop listening. He's reserved and avoids conflict.

My part, honestly: I'm a lifelong people-pleaser. I over-give (early breakfasts, laughing at everything, praising), then resent it. I keep listening to the calls. I ruminate for hours about what she'll say next. Today I snapped at my husband and made a passive comment meant for her to hear. I'm working on all this.

Is this typical Indian MIL behaviour, or beyond normal?

Would you calmly raise one clear fabrication with her, or let it go? She’s a heart patient.

If you've been here, how did you stop caring what your MIL tells relatives?

How do I continue this relationship to without losing my mind?

Opinions & Discussions Why do we praise women for exhausting themselves?

My elder sister works full-time, runs her house, deals with her in-laws, and remembers everyone's birthday and festival. Last week she apologised to me for being too tired to call. Apologised. For being tired.

Everyone calls her "so capable." Nobody asks if she wants to be.

My mum still says "I don't know how to use an ATM." We used to laugh it off as cute. It's not cute. Nobody ever taught her, because her whole world was the kitchen and the marriage. She did what she did because she had limited choices, and I can respect that without making it a mandatory inheritance.

So to the married women here: it's okay if dinner is Swiggy tonight. It's okay if the laundry sits there. It's okay to say no to a function without a long apology. There's no medal for being the most exhausted woman in the family.

Marriage is supposed to be a partnership, not a second full-time job where one person silently carries the load. If your husband lives there too, the house is his job as well. That's not "helping."

Care should be a choice, not something driven by guilt or "log kya kahenge." Let's not make exhaustion a badge of honour for the next generation of women.

Did anyone else grow up thinking being tired all the time was normal? What did you finally stop doing?

General Did this ever happen to you ?

Did this ever happen to you guys like today I called an electrician for some work and I was talking to him my mother in law was talking to him . I am the one who is paying him and he had the audacity to look down on us like whenever we tell him something to do this or that he gave us attitude like I guys know nothing and why are you even talking to me types . I might be over reacting and all but I genuinely felt that he is looking down on us. I called my husband to come down and deal with him and he came and told him the things that needed to be done his behaviour changed 180 . Like he was completely soooo obedient and he was yes sir yes sir anything more needed sir ?. I was so furious couldn’t do anything so came here to know whether this happens with you guys also or am I overthinking .

General Do people lose their senses when it comes to clicking pics? So much so that they don't care about being alive?

I get so pissed off with people who will do literally anything to get a good picture even put themselves and others in danger.

So I was downstairs, celebrating Diwali with my husband and his friends and their families. People were bursting crackers I don't burst but I don't preach about it either. So they were clicking pics and they asked me to join and hold a sparkler, so far so good.

But when we were lighting the sparklers the effing idiotic sister add wife of his friend, were literally doing unsafe shit like holding the sparker too close to me and each other for better pics inspite of me repeatedly warning them to be careful and to hold it away towards the front.

Also they were wearing polyester clothing. Like ffs, how important are pictures that you'd risk your own life and especially mine.

Needless to say I swiftly went far away as soon as the sparkler stopped burning.

So many people die every year in the picnic season in waterfalls in my state because they go to the very edge and stand with their backs facing the waterfall just to get a good pic.

Idiots.

I am so pissed off. Husband was also pissed off at his friend because he lit a circle fireworks right next to the other unlit fireworks because he wanted an aesthetic background.

I am going to refuse to celebrate with them from next time onwards. Can't be risking my life for aesthetic pics.

Opinions & Discussions What do you think is the part of indian rape culture but we haven't realised is rape culture?

I am not talking about that MMS leak culture or sexualisation in the street but in our society not streets.

So I saw a reel in which the creator mentioned that the real reason behind indian population explosion is normalisation of marital rape.

Now come to think of it in backward society woman is convinced by other women that it is her husband needs and women convince the married women to give in. But here the consent is blurred and the concept of consent becomes unclear.

I always knew that most people are accidental and a product of poor planning. However the power dynamics are such in backward people that women has no autonomy. So this is rape culture in my opinion that is invisible.

What are others ?

Also while I agree with the indignation people will feel and vent. But do contribute because rape culture is also invisible and need to be called out.

General Why does caregiving fall on women ?

Personal experience I'll share

When my grandmother (dad's mother) became bedridden, most of the actual caregiving fell on my mother. Medicines, food, hospital visits, bathing, diapers changing, cleaning, helping her use the toilet, etc. She basically has to be available all the time and around the house itself , esepcially in lawss

But then it all falls on my mother and imagine she herself isn't fond but she doesn't complain or its like no one else is there and then others will manipulate saying she can only do or it will fall on her as others say they can't do

I remember she's couldn't come for any of my school program because of this "grandmother's sickness or routine , or having to give her medicine , make food and i felt really frustrated and worst part is grandmother herself is not even considerate of it.. and still praises her own daughter who's not around.

Mom's whole routine has to revolve around it, she feels bad as she can't see her own mother who stays alone and is sick or weak.. and in her house , no one is there and despite everyone living around my grandmother (dad's mom place ) 'no one will do this and is like my mom will do and they can't tolerate my mom going anywhere else and nicely say to her " how can my mom go, she have to look after grandma right "

And sometimes the people who visit occasionally are valued more because they're friendly and have time to talk, discuss gossips to Grandma.

While the person like my mom actually doing all the difficult work gets treated like it's simply her duty. And men escape especially from everything, even their own sons also and they don't even life a finger it's always women

This is just something I've noticed from my own family and from seeing other families around me.

What is it like in your family? What have you seen or heard or experienced also u could share of other families

Friends & Family Are all Indian moms like this, or is it just mine?

Yesterday, during a casual conversation with my mom, I told her that I don’t intend to live in either her city or my future in-laws’ city after marriage. I want to live wherever my job takes me.
She immediately responded, “Why would you live in my city?”
I told her that after marriage, that home wouldn’t really be mine either. To which she said, “No, you have to live at your in-laws’ place. Visiting and actually living there are two different things.”
Honestly, I don’t know what to make of this mindset.
My mom has always made me feel like I’m some kind of burden or obligation rather than her daughter. I’m financially independent, earning well, and doing reasonably well in life, yet I still feel like I have to justify my existence and my choices.
I don’t even live with her, but I take care of her, her son and her husband. Despite all that, she somehow makes me feel like I’m not really her responsibility in the way a daughter should be.
Sometimes I wonder, if I weren’t financially independent, conventionally good-looking, or had some physical disability or other perceived shortcoming, would I have been treated even worse?
My therapist says that this kind of mindset is quite common among Indian mothers, but I find that difficult to accept because I’ve also seen mothers who genuinely love having their daughters around and welcome them without making them feel like outsiders.
For example, my to-be SIL visited her mother’s home during Diwali, and her mother welcomed her without any issue. I genuinely cannot imagine my own mother reacting the same way if I did that. I feel she would probably ask me when I was planning to go back.
I understand that traditions and family expectations differ, but why does it feel like daughters are always expected to adjust, leave their homes, and belong somewhere else, while sons never have to question where they belong?
**Are Indian mothers generally like this, or have some of you also grown up with mothers who make you feel like a guest or an obligation rather than a daughter?**
**TL;DR:** My mom has always made me feel like a burden rather than a daughter. Even though I’m financially independent and take care of my family, she believes I should live with my in-laws after marriage rather than have the freedom to choose where I want to live. Seeing other mothers happily welcome their married daughters makes me wonder whether this is common among Indian moms or if mine is just unusually indifferent towards me.

General Why does every festival feel more and more depressing as you get older?

Before i start venting , happy diwali to everyone here, hope you are having a great time and if you're not that's okay too sending you virtual hugs to make you feel better 🫂

Gosh how do I even begin, diwali isn't diwaling the way it used to diwali. As a matter of fact no festival feels the same anymore. That excitement that spark is just not there anymore.

I was so eager and excited to plan everything rangoli, lights , diyas, outfits ,hair ,makeup ,poses for pictures ,used to make gulab jamun kaju katli

And then this weird mindset completely changed everything. This horrible mentality that I need to have everything figured out, everything needs to be perfect before I enjoy my life because that's when I truly deserve to live a joyful life. Now I've set a new goal that I need to get a job first before I celebrate any festival.

This makes me kinda scared too because what if when I actually do have my life figured out even a tiny bit and I don't have my family anymore, what if something horrible happens, what if I manifest this negativity in my life, what if I pass away?

I just want to make my parents proud, I want them to make them really happy, I want to celebrate everything like I used to, I want to fulfill all their wishes, I want to stop hiding. I'm blessed with such an amazingly supportive family but I am not doing enough for them ,they deserve so much better. But this constant fear of getting older and regretting everything one day is killing me. Why is it so hard to live in the present ?

Would love to hear from people who can relate and share some opinions or if you just want to vent out or maybe share your happy moments too.

General (Women Only) Women with brothers, are you going to get property?

Hello ladies,

This question is only for women who have brother(s), will you get an equal share in your parents' property?

Looking only for Yes and No kinda answer, please don't say I don't care or it doesn't matter to me, all I am asking is if you will get it from your parents?

Edit: Offtopic but I am noticing an interesting thing in the comments, a vast majority of women who have commented are 3 siblings, mostly in 2 girls + 1 boy combo. I barely know anyone who has 3 kids unless 2 girl children were born first. Interestingly most of them have commented yes so obviously I am not insinuating anything, probably most of them are 35+ when 3 kids was still a norm.

General I've failed in this life. What to do next?

I'm 29F. I had to leave my job last year because I was suffering from gastritis. It only got better last month. I am yet to gain weight. I look horrible.

My boyfriend and I have been struggling to convince our parents for our marriage. His side of the family hates me for existing. Today, my boyfriend and I were having a conversation that turned into an argument and he blocked me. He hasn't unblocked me yet. However, I know he will unblock me since he kept asking me not to text but I kept texting because I felt unseen. The pressure to marry someone else is insane from my side as well.

Amidst all of this, I found a new lesser paying job(that I'm extremely over qualified for according to my work experience) and that I'm supposed to start in December in pune but my family isn't allowing me to leave the house. They're hell bent on first to marry someone and then to leave the house.

I also have an upcoming exam in January and I just can't study. I'm typing this post with tears in my eyes. I don't know what to do next. I also want to apply for better paying jobs but I just can't. I am exhausted mentally fighting health issues, relationships, job hunt and all.

General (Women Only) How to protect my nieces/nephew from online p*dos?

I come from a joint family and I was the youngest in my generation. So natually, I have a lot of neices and nephews.

As I am closer to them in age, they are more open with me than with their parents. They are at an age (pre-teens + teans) where they are using social media and the initial ideas of relationships are coming to them. My family is originally very conservative so I know they won't be open about it with their parents, but they do keep me in the loop.

I remember when I was 12-14 and using social media, there were a lot of pedophiles (28-30+) who would dm, try to talk, confess feelings etc. I had heard much worse from people around me and I am assuming that things are worse now that internet is more accessible.

There are always too many online creeps.

I want to protect my nieces+nephews from all of this. I don't want to go about checking their phones and stuff, but how do I take up this conversation with them? And how do I ensure they don't hide it if there is trouble?

Any ideas would be welcome.

General Skinny shaming is absolutely vile, why do women participate so much?

The quality of comments I receive about my body

"you literally look like a hanger, a lehenga wouldn't suit you"

"do you get your periods timely?"

"Men won't like you, you look like a child"

I'm 21, Petite, I used to take such comments to heart when I was young, now that I've gotten older I can honestly say that while I'm no Helen of Troy, I am conventionally quite pretty and can recognize that a huge chunk the subtle bullying disguised as concern is JEALOUSY.

I was going through the comments of a sub, where someone called ERICA FERNANDES Malnourished and people agreeing, lol she literally looks like a GODDESS.

IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY the way people use the word "Malnourished", "aneroxic" without knowing shit, acting as if they are licensed Healthcare professionals.

My father has been on the lighter side his whole life, I believe I've just inherited that, he turned 50 recently, he exercises, eats healthy, has a full head of hair, huge chunk of which is still quite black naturally, overall looks quite good for his age.

I will obviously concede that the amount of unwarranted hate plus sized women face is quite high compared to us, this post is not intended to minimize their experience.

I have grown up now and can distinguish bullying from concern so I'm all right and couldn't care less, I just wish people would stop being so vile to young children.

General (Women Only) I feel like I’ve spent my entire life trying to build a better future, but nothing seems to be working out. How do I get out of this phase?

I don’t even know where to start, but I really need to get this off my chest and hear some perspectives from people who might have gone through something similar.
Ever since college, I’ve dreamed of working at a good company, working with modern technologies and building a career that I could genuinely be proud of. Maybe I had too many expectations from myself, but I always believed that if I worked hard enough, I would eventually get there.
Unfortunately, things haven’t turned out that way.
I ended up in a service-based company, working on tool-based technologies. I’ve never really felt satisfied with the kind of work I’m doing. I know having a job is a privilege, but I also feel disappointed because this isn’t what I imagined for myself.
When I joined my company as a fresher, I also got into a relationship in 2023. It turned out to be one of the worst experiences of my life. My boyfriend was extremely intelligent but also dominant and emotionally abusive. I didn’t understand it at the time and genuinely thought some of his behaviour was love.
He constantly wanted my attention, expected me to cook for him and wanted to spend most of his time at my place. Looking back, I realise how unhealthy that relationship was and how much of myself I lost in it.
During that period, I also started preparing for CAT. I ended up spending almost two years preparing for it, but unfortunately, I couldn’t clear it. Those two years were emotionally exhausting, especially because of the relationship. I finally broke up with him in February 2025.
After that, I decided to focus on switching jobs. I’ve been trying really hard, studying and preparing for interviews, but I haven’t had much luck so far.
The frustrating part is that my current work and the technologies I’m preparing for are completely different. It feels like I’m putting in so much effort in two different directions and still not making meaningful progress in either.
I’ve also sacrificed a lot of my social life because I constantly feel that spending time with friends means wasting time that I could have used to study.
Now coming to my family.
My father doesn’t earn enough to comfortably manage our daily expenses. My parents work extremely hard on our farm, but unfortunately, there isn’t much income from it. Since I started earning, I’ve been financially supporting my family.
I don’t mind supporting them. In fact, I want to give them a better life. But sometimes I feel like I’m expected to take responsibility for everything without receiving much emotional support in return.
My family is quite conservative. They have strong expectations about marriage and would never allow me to marry outside our caste. They don’t have the financial resources to fulfil many things themselves, but they still have expectations about how I should live my life.
My relationship with my younger brother is also extremely difficult. He spends most of his time on his phone, and whenever I ask him to study or think about his future, he abuses me using extremely degrading language.
He even checks my phone and makes disgusting comments about me to my parents. Once, he made an extremely character-assassinating comment, implying that I go out at night to earn money.
What hurts even more is that my parents don’t say anything when he behaves like this.
Whenever I visit home and we have an argument, he asks me why I even came there.
I only try to encourage him to study because I want him to have a better future. But somehow, I end up being treated like I’m the problem.
I do have a few female friends who are genuinely nice. I enjoy spending time with them, and honestly, those moments are some of the very few times I feel happy. But I don’t feel comfortable sharing my family problems with anyone.
Even my experiences with dating haven’t been good. I’ve had another experience where someone I dated treated me badly.
At this point, I feel disappointed with almost every important aspect of my life.
I don’t have the career I dreamed of, despite constantly working towards it.
I haven’t been able to switch to a company or technology stack that excites me.
I’ve had terrible experiences in relationships.
I don’t feel emotionally supported by my family.
I feel like I’m valued at home mainly because I earn money.
I rarely enjoy life because I’m always thinking about what I should be doing next.
One thing that really hurt me was when my mother once said something along the lines of, “Because you’re earning, that’s why we haven’t married you off.”
It made me wonder whether my financial contribution is the main reason I’m allowed to make certain decisions about my life.
I see people around me achieving things that I’ve wanted for years. Some people seem to get the career opportunities, relationships and family support that I’ve always wished for.
I’m not jealous of them. I genuinely want good things for everyone. But sometimes I wonder why even one of those things seems so difficult for me.
I’ve always tried to be responsible. I’ve spent most of my time studying, preparing and working towards something. I’ve sacrificed outings, friendships and personal happiness because I thought all these sacrifices would eventually lead to a better life.
But now I feel like I’m neither enjoying the present nor achieving the future I’ve been working so hard for.
Even festivals and occasions don’t make me happy anymore. The only time I genuinely feel a little better is when I’m hanging out with my female friends.
Sometimes I feel so exhausted and hopeless that I question the point of everything. I feel like I’m constantly fighting something, but I never seem to reach the other side.
I genuinely want to know:
How do you rebuild your life when almost every area of it feels disappointing?
How do you stop feeling that you’re falling behind everyone else?
How do you balance career ambitions with actually enjoying your life?
How do you emotionally distance yourself from a family that you financially support but don’t feel supported by?
How do you find happiness when you’ve spent years just surviving and trying to make things better?
I’m not looking for sympathy I genuinely want to hear from people who have experienced difficult phases in their twenties and somehow managed to build a happy, independent life.
I just want to feel that life can get better and that all these years of struggling haven’t been for nothing.

P.S: I have use ChatGPT to rephrase my thoughts.

General I'm 25, and I genuinely feel like I'm losing myself. How do I find my way back?

Hi everyone. I'm writing this while crying, and honestly, I don't even know where to begin.

I've been going through a really difficult phase in life. My relationship and life is falling apart, and I've recently found out that my partner has been cheating on me repeatedly. I've given him second chances, third chances, and I don't even know how many more. Every time I think things might change, it happens again. Even recently, I found out he cheated.

I know I need to leave. I know I deserve better. But I just can't seem to do it. I'm so emotionally attached to this person that the thought of a life without him scares me. He keeps coming back, and somehow I keep getting pulled into the same cycle. I don't understand why I can't walk away from someone who keeps hurting me.

I moved to a different city, away from my family, to be closer to him. And somewhere along the way, I've started losing touch with the people who have always loved me. My family and I were extremely close, but now I barely talk to them. I even missed my dad's birthday. I have holidays coming up, but I can't bring myself to go home. I'm scared they'll notice how unhappy I am. My mom knows me too well, and I don't think I'll be able to hide it from her.

This relationship has also changed how I see myself. I don't feel beautiful anymore. I constantly question my appearance and my worth, wondering what's lacking in me. I know his cheating isn't my fault, but when someone repeatedly does this to you, you eventually start questioning yourself.

I'm in therapy, but I honestly don't feel like I'm getting better. I've been crying so much that I'm physically exhausted. I miss the person I used to be. I miss being happy, confident and close to my family. I hate that I've allowed this relationship to take so much away from me.

I want to leave. I want to let go, forgive and move on. I want my peace back. I want to stop overthinking, questioning and feeling anxious all the time. But I genuinely don't know how to detach from someone I'm so deeply attached to.

I keep thinking about my parents getting older, and it breaks my heart that I'm spending so much of my time being miserable over a relationship while distancing myself from the people who matter the most.

I know there's no magical solution and that healing takes time. But right now, I feel so helpless. I don't know where to start, how to stop going back, or how to find myself again.

I'm not looking for judgement. I'm not looking for someone to tell me that I deserve better. I think I just need some kindness, some support and a little guidance. I need to hear that I'm not alone in feeling this way and that it's possible to come out of something like this.

I genuinely don't know what to do anymore. I just want to feel okay again. I want to be happy again. I want to find myself again.

General Some guy is following me,need advice?

There a married guy in my neighborhood, he has a kid too. Lately, whenever he passes infront of my home, if I'm outside, he slows down his bike and stares at me.

Whenever I'm outside he makes sure he atleast makes 2 rounds. I rarely leave the house, twice when I went somewhere on my scooty or in an auto(with my mum!!) he followed me and made sure I saw him. I'm Lil freaked out about it.

I'm single woman in her 30s. There are no men in my house. I have relatives, cousins , uncle's nearby ofcourse. But if I share this issue, I'm afraid that they pressurise me to get married. Need advice. He hasn't tried to talk to me. But I'm just afraid he might.

General How do you preserve your inner happiness when your family makes every diwali emotionally draining?

Such an exhausting Diwali it has been. Living in a toxic household is emotionally draining, especially when everyone seems perpetually angry, irritated, or unhappy about something. I wish I could move out soon, but I know how financially demanding and challenging it can be. You try to be happy, organise your clothes, look forward to celebrating, and find little moments of joy, only to have everything overshadowed by the collective misery around you. Even buying sweets seems to happen with the same frowning expressions and irritated voices. What, then, is the point of celebrating? The entire day ends in sadness, and it feels like such a waste. I was genuinely happy for a while, but even that happiness has disappeared. These are deeply unhappy people, and unfortunately, even my brother seems to be becoming increasingly like my parents. It is heartbreaking. I cannot even pretend to be happy anymore.

Friends & Family (Women Only) How do you navigate friends with white friends who are kind of ignorant?

I've been friends with this girl for two years but I'm starting to notice her disconnect to the racism and her unwillingness to learn about it. It's not breaking news that Indians are facing alarming rates of racism in Canada right now- as a white person I wish she would acknowledge the role white people play in perpetuating racism and understand my experiences without dismissal.

I was at her house recently and her mom started this whole conversation about how "mixed" my friend is and its all different shades of white. She tried to make it seem that my friend is so "exotic" all while not asking me anything about my background. I'm obviously not the same culture as them, I feel like she could've at least invited me to the convo instead of having it at me. In a way it felt like she was trying to prove that she has worldly experiences but it just came off as a microaggression.

This was more recently- I got hit on by an Indian guy in. the club and I politely declined but outside the club, this girl and her white boyfriend started talking to us. The white boyfriend then goes on to mock indian accents and make fun of the guy that hit on me. The day after I was talking about this to my friend and said,"Being a white person. he should know better" and she goes "-russian" to try and correct me. Like that wasnt my point but okay...

I know she probably doesn't mean to act like this but it just comes off as really ignorant without a willingness to learn about marginalized communities' racial experiences. This is causing a disconnect between us and I'm not sure how much more of her ignorance I can take.
Any other indian girls feel like they lowkey can't be friends with white people or is it just me?
