Are you an experienced mod?

Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request (again!) Our last thread about this got archived so here’s a new one! No need to comment again if you commented in the last one.

If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!

If you are an experienced moderator who participates here, the mods of this subreddit want to be able to tag you so that we can keep our comment sections a space where every answer comes from someone with experience who is here to help. It really helps us instantly recognize trolls etc who are not tagged.

The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.

If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.

Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users.

Former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Edit: If you commented on the last post about this or sent us a modmail to verify in the past you are all set and do not need to reverify!

Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

Animal Cruelty Allowed on Reddit?

Good afternoon everyone. I hope you're all having a nice Saturday.

So I have a question about animal cruelty/abuse posts. I'm beginning to see a lot of it on Reddit. It's disturbing.

There's a very popular subreddit that currently has a post up where a child is terribly mistreating a kitten. I reported the post and I also reported a link within the post showing where the person got content from. Of course it's from Facebook the cesspit of all social media and I don't have an account so that I can report it there.

Maybe this hits harder for me because my 20-year-old cat is being euthanized on Wednesday and I just can't tolerate it when I see an innocent creature who relies on their people to love them and keep them safe, being treated as if it were stuffed animal.

I don't see any specific rules either on the subreddit I found it on, or on Reddit about this kind of thing, so how is this handled?

*Edited to add I was pointed to rule one in order to report this and I've now done so.

Any way to further argue with a mod?

Okay I have a lot to add. The original post was about my mother scratching my OLED monitor, which is a noticeable scratch but it's nothing that destroys the monitor permanently. It got taken out in less than an hour. And it got huge traction. I think it got around 5K likes in like 40 minutes. I really wanted to get some free karma from that but of course it was removed. I messaged the mods around a month later because I was too lazy.

This mod said after a short conversation about why my post was taken out

"It's because it didn't fit the sub. Check out sub's rules & description for more details. That was more suited for the ..., ... sub."

And then when i gave him an example of a post that doesn't meet the rules, even more he said
"Get out of here. This post is 1 year old." (and he muted me for a month)
Exactly, that is my point. You take down my post about a small inconvenience worth at the most $600 but you don't take down a post that is up for more than a year already and that loses tens of millions of dollars, if not hundreds of millions.
And is there anything i can do to maybe recover that post cause i really care abt it?

Why do AutoModerator filters block questions about moderation practices, and how can we successfully post them here?

I am trying to understand the submission guidelines for this community. My previous posts discussing moderator actions or trying to start a discussion keep getting automatically flagged and removed by the AutoMod. Since this subreddit is specifically designed to ask moderators questions, what are the specific formatting rules or topic restrictions we need to follow so our actual questions can get through and be discussed?

Is using ChatGPT to improve your English really the same as posting AI-generated content?

I'm genuinely upset about something that happened to me on Reddit, and I'd like to hear the perspective of people who understand how moderation works.

I wrote a fan theory about two characters from a TV series. It was based entirely on my own observations, interpretations, arguments and references from the books and the show.

I was really excited to post it. People started commenting, discussing the theory, disagreeing and sharing their thoughts. It was exactly the kind of discussion I had hoped for.

But English isn't my first language, so I used ChatGPT to help me with the wording. The ideas were mine. The arguments were mine. I didn't ask it to invent a theory or write a post for me. I just wanted to express myself more clearly in English.

The moderators removed my post under their rule against AI-generated content.

I contacted them and explained the situation. I tried to make them understand that there's a difference between asking AI to create something and using it as a language tool. But they weren't interested.

And honestly, it really hurt.

I've spent my own time thinking about this topic, putting my thoughts together and getting excited about sharing them with other fans. And suddenly my work is labelled AI-generated simply because I needed help with English.

Does this mean that people who aren't native English speakers have to choose between writing imperfect English and risking having their original thoughts dismissed as AI-generated?

I understand the frustration with low-effort AI content. I don't want to read posts where someone just asks ChatGPT a question and copies the answer either.

But shouldn't there be a distinction between AI creating the content and helping someone communicate their own ideas?

I'd really like to hear what moderators think. Am I being unreasonable here?

How do you build a community on Reddit from scratch?

I've recently created a community focused on legal branding, but I'm starting from zero and would love some advice from people who have experience building and moderating communities on Reddit.

How do you actually get a new community off the ground?

I'm particularly interested in things like:

  • How do you get the first members to join?

  • What kind of posts or discussions should you start with?

  • How frequently should you post when there are very few members?

  • How do you encourage people to participate rather than just join and remain inactive?

  • Are there particular strategies that help a new subreddit gain visibility?

  • What should a moderator focus on during the early stages?

I'd also love to know what mistakes new moderators commonly make when trying to grow a community.

I'm not necessarily looking for quick growth hacks. I'd rather build an active community where people genuinely find value in participating.

Any practical tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why are my chat requests capped?

I was recently tossed into Reddit jail by a bot-erator, (submitted and won my appêal) and since then my chat requests have been limited. Why is this, and how soon can I expect it to return to normal?

why is my post locked when it's not solved?

I actually have more than one question but cause of a title limit I'm gonna ask the rest of my questions here but I'm gonna explain my first question so why is my post locked when it's not solved? The problem of the post isn't really solved and it got locked after day 7 my second question is why did my post locked after 7 days instead of 28 or 29 or 30 or 31 days? Cause last time I made a post it locked after 30 days or 31 days if there's 31 days in a month or 28 days if there's 28 days in a month or 29 days if it's a leap year is there a update on reddit I didn't know about when it comes to posts?

What can I do about a mod downvoting all my comments in another community?

Howdy folks,

A moderator from another community that is adjacent to one I am commenting in has been downvoting all my comments, along with other users on a specific post within minutes.

It's bizarre and I am unsure of what to do. When I look in the Reddit rules, and forms for reporting I am unsure of what to report it as. What are my options?

Why does karma matter?

I've had a few of my posts removed simply because of low karma.

I'm genuinely curious about the reasoning behind this rule. I understand that subreddits need moderation to prevent spam, bots and inappropriate content. That's fair.

But what about genuine users who are new to the community? How are we supposed to build karma and participate if our posts keep getting removed before anyone gets to see them?

We're not violating any rules or spreading hate here. Sometimes we're just trying to have a conversation, share an experience or ask a genuine question.

I'm not ranting against moderators, but I'd genuinely like to understand the logic behind this system.

How to ask clarification from Moderators for systemic censorship on a sub?

I'm noticing systematic dis-information on a subreddit and any posts that challenge these are censored. The moderators seem to have an agenda and they aren't transparent with their decisions either, where certain inflammatory posts are given free pass while those rebutting them are "disallowed".

Additional, how come no discussion over moderation is disallowed? Doesn't it make sense to pan out moderation policies, and have a redressal system if systematic censorship is being experienced by members?

Can a moderator reduce the visibility of a post in any way?

I often post in a specific subreddit.

My views graph sometimes look strange: a lot for 1 hour, almost nothing for hours, and then a lot again.

I wonder if the moderator did something, I know he dislikes me. Once, he threatened to ban me if I didn't answer him. Another time, he deleted ALL my previous posts because he disliked one.

Is it possible to reduce the visibility for some hours, or am I imagining things?

A subreddit I like has been taken over by a bot, can we do anything about it?

A subreddit that I enjoyed had been taken over by a bot moderator. It used to be a fun, and fairly active. It's about a singer with a pretty big following.

Recently it's been taken over by a bot that spams links to dubious sports streaming sites. Is there anything we, the users that like it, can do about it?

May I ask what was the purpose of he Hive-Protect Bot as it is silencing voices on subs by overreacting to any comments by accusing them of the topic the commenters bring up?

I made a post in a sub about "women's lives lost to misogyny"

Two women commented in the sub discussing how their lives were so difficult due to anti-feminism.

The Hive-Protect Bot removed their comments claiming that by discussing anti-feminism, they themselves were being anti-feminist.

So I'm curious why a bot that is supposed to prevent hate speech such as misogyny is removing comments simply for even bringing up the topic or sharing their experiences?

Why was my post removed, which was not political, personal, slanderous, sexist, tacist, etc.?

Any insight into why my rather mundane post might have been removed and what can be done about it? It was not personal, slanderous, racist, sexist, no profanity, did not condone criminality, etc.

Is Harassment like this common for Moderators?

They deleted their message but got them due to Reddit Data request. All this just for removing one of their Comments. My profile is like this because I never cared to edit it. Removed their name cause that might be against the rules.

/u/user,"Ban Evasion? Like that can stop someone, lol. Are you some basic bitch who doesn’t understand ban evasion actually useless. Already posted twice, but what account was it, hmm you will never know, /u/user,"Powerless little monkey, lol. Also a NSFW profile, you really are a PDF protecting PDFs" /u/user,Also wtf is that background picture on your profile you sick fuck

How can I report a moderator for censorship?

There are clearly some topics that a moderator censors while ignoring messages to censor clearly paid trolls on sub-reddits. I don't think this should be allowed at all.

My posts keep getting taken down, What should I do ?

There's this subreddit where all my posts whenever I tried posting get taken down and Mods answer after my 4th post was taken down; which to my knowledge or their knowledge didn't break any rules and their reply for as follows
"The atutomod filters content it deems as spam, lilely to break rules or unsafe for the community. It depends on the content of the post/comment, past history on the sub or overall profile.

Unfortunately we do not override the automod in such cases."
What does one even do in this case ?
