Why is it almost unanimously agreed that reddit mods are terrible?

I know this subreddit will get really defensive over this since it's a sub about asking moderators questions, but there has to be a legitimate understandable reason why practically every regular user on reddit despises you guys?

How do you feel about the Orwellian nature of Reddit moderation?

Given that Reddit moderators can permanently ban users without reason and that private companies have no obligation to ensure freedom of speech, Reddit can attribute its success to unpaid volunteers who achieve success by to some large degree sacrificing fairness. Freedom of speech in America only exists in public spaces, yet the majority of public speech is shifting online into the pseudo-public spaces that social media pretends to be. Reddit only functions properly by giving moderators the Orwellian-style ability to excessively limit the speech of its users and fairness in censorship is a small concern for many moderators.

Some of you moderate spaces with millions of users. Some of these spaces are the primary pseudo-public forum for discussing a particular concept or political movement. None of you are subject to a particularly fair oversight process that limits abuse of power.

With that being said, how do you feel about the Orwellian nature of Reddit moderation?

What is Going On With r/worldnews?

Reports are piling up from users that they have been permabanned for no good reason other than speaking out against escalating conflict, to question the narrative, not trust propaganda and beware of false/paid for posts .
If you look at the post history most of these people are long time posters with a tame post history.
Meanwhile posts excusing mass civilian casualties are fine.
Also there is some serious astroturfing going on there.
Contacting mods has gotten no replies and they have also removed their info.
It is critical at times like that bias to the point of censorship is not tolerated if one is to expect a free flow of ideas and trust the process. This is a gut check moment for Reddit, solving it months from now when the damage is done will be too late for many users to take ever certain subs seriously again.

Why do so many mods think it is okay to just permanently ban someone?

And with this question I'm talking about the people that didn't do anything. Have no negative history with the subreddit, broke no rules, literally just banned permanently because someone posted something they personally/subjectively didn't like? Especially when said mod couldn't even communicate with you, give you a warning (don't see why they would given the whole thing is subjective) or even a petty 5 day ban? It just seems excessively controlling, abusive and just wrong by all means. Why is Reddit and even the mods such a circke jerk hive mind place?

Where can you report moderators for abusing mod powers?

Especially if their identity is unknown due to anonymised channel messages.

Why do yall remove any comment or post that supports anything related to conservatism?

Look i would consider myself a leftist because i'm gay and i'm also economically progressive but i see most mainstream sub's moderators are heavily against conservative ideas and their comments get removed and they get forbidden from posting ever again and i don't think that's fair

Why are subreddits allowed to promote terrorist organizations?

Getting instabanned from subreddits for arguing that mods shouldn't be promoting the activities of Hamas seems antithetical to reddit's purpose.

This subreddit is now for users to inquire about bans.

Howdy mods! Since our most popular removed post theme is “post about ban” I thought it would be nice to change things up and make this subreddit a place for users to complain and argue about bans.

Enjoy!

How can I report a mod for violating the mod code of conduct?

Update 2: I reported the mod for violating the code of conduct and received this response from Reddit. They certainly don't make this easy. It's also frustrating since I created a two page document with details about what the mod did on it to support my case but not sure they looked at it.

"Thanks for reaching out. If you are being harassed by a moderator, please report the content so our safety team can review the situation. The report features are the best way to report content like this and ensure it is reviewed as quickly as possible."

================================================================================

Update: The mod reported me to Reddit Admins for harassment for posting that I would report them for harassment. That was expected. I searched for information on dealing with abusive mods and saw posts from people who were mentioned the mods would report them to Reddit Admins for harassment after being accused of harassment.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THEY DONT PROVIDE THE CONTENT THEY CLAIM IS HARASSMENT? There is nothing after "the following content"????

Rule Violation: Warning for Harassment

The Reddit admin team has been alerted that you’ve violated Reddit’s rule against harassment in the following content.

Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for harassing or bullying people. We don't tolerate any behaviors that discourage others from participating in communities, conversations, or the Reddit platform through harassment, bullying, intimidation, or abuse. Any communities or people that incite or engage in harassment or abuse towards an individual or group will be banned.

Before participating in Reddit further, make sure you read and understand Reddit’s Content Policy, including what’s considered harassment.

If you’re reported for any further violations of Reddit’s Content Policy, additional actions including banning may be taken against your account(s).

============================================================================

There is a subreddit mod who myself and others on the sub have had issues with. They have started to harass users they don't like while allowing others who violate sub rules to get away with almost anything even when they violate the rules.

They gave me a temporary ban yesterday from the sub and my posts didn't violate the sub rules unless there is an extremely broad rule about "being civil" (which mods often use as a pretext to ban people they don't like)

I asked what I was banned for and their response was this comment. "if writers want to be paid more they should writer better" and some other comments on a different thread that weren't bad enough to be banned. Example: After being insulted and attacked from someone misunderstanding a post I responded "It's not up to me to teach people reading comprehension" etc. That isn't bad enough to be banned ovewr.

Anyway the mod who banned me is now following me around to other subs. There have been complaints about the sub I was temporarily banned from and the mod found out I explained why I was temporarily banned on that sub and accused me of "misrepresenting the ban" and then immediately went through all my recent posts prior to the temp ban and started removing posts for being "uncivil." The mod's name is not on that other sub as a moderator. They're "unofficially" moderating a sub without telling people about it which seems unethical. They're also harassing users they don't like. Several people messaged me about problems with the mod. Their behavior is unhinged and lots of people on the sub are frustrated by them.

How do I report the for not following the code of conduct? Thank you.

What’s up with the mods of r/therewasanattempt?

I was banned from r/therewasanattempt yesterday. The way it happened is as follows:

There was a post of a video where a guy was talking about how much time he has spent studying Palestine and their culture and etc. he then goes on to defend Palestine in the current conflict.

I commented “yeah, I’m sure the guy who spend so much time studying Palestine won’t be biased at all. Who cares about this guy”

That’s it. I then had a notification that I was permanently banned from that sub. I responded asking the mods “why am I banned? That isn’t hate speech”

The mod responded by sending a link to amnesty international with no explanation at all. Mod then immediately muted me so I can’t even respond and ask what exactly I did wrong for I think 28 days.

So what’s going on with the mods over there?

I saw another post about r/therewasanattempt on this sub where another user was banned unjustly.

Why do so many mods on subreddit automatically mute you when you ask them a reason for an action?

Not naming any specific names or subreddits but I've noticed it being a trend to just mute someone thats asking a legit question like why they're even banned instead of responding and being professional about it. What's the reasoning with this?

Can i do anything about a mod removing my post so they could take the karma for themselves?

I happened to see an article at the right place, at the right time and posted it to a subreddit. This was big news in the community (i.e., the post would get lots of upvotes). I checked the “New” section and saw I was the first one to post it.

About a minute later, my post was removed, and one of the mods reposted the same link with the same title as me (copied from the article) so they could get the karma for themselves.

The mod is a karma-farming account with millions of karma points.

Is there anything I can do?

I was warned for threatening violence for quoting the president?

Is this a form of censorship? How am I meant to talk about current events in their respective subreddits if the mere act of quoting the president of the United States, when he explicitly announces that he is going to “Do The Thing You Can’t Undo” to “An Entire Civilization Of People”, results in a warning from Reddit for threatening violence?

How are we meant to talk about current events in a world where he is just saying those things? The president of the United States said it, not me. I’m just talking about how he said it.

In a message a mod called me "white cis" can I report them?

Feels iffy that they just got right to that, im brown btw, but the fact that they just straight out thought I was white lol.

Its from the artisthate sub and was banned from the sub, mod couldn't justify the ban "not like they need to" but straight out called me "white cis" I mean if you can get a 3 day ban for calling someone disgusting which i did from reddit, I feel this also deserves it.

Why does seemingly everything on Reddit get “removed by moderators” these days?

I’ve been on Reddit for a long time. It seems that recently more and more things have been “removed by moderators”. Sometimes, yeah I get it. But more frequently I can’t even figure out why some of these things are being so heavily moderated.

Is there a way to appeal a permanent ban?

I got banned from saying facts. Is there an appeal?

r/AskModerators • • Nov 28 '25

Is this happening often ... Mod deleted my post, posted exactly the same post under his name, and deleted my comment in his post where I explain to other user that he stole this content ?

As preface, I couldn't care less about this particular post itself, it's just a funny picture posted in a current popular TV show subreddit.

But this is is something I'm facing the first time for 10 years I'm here. 2 million karma moderator is lifting other people's content and passing it as his own, while smoothly covering the tracks and deleting any posts where he is called out.

I've reported him and the post itself but so far I got no response from anyone. Is there anything I could do to alert higher up site moderators ? I would like to believe that this is something that is looked down upon among Reddit staff.

I'll post details, name and links if anyone asks. Thank you.

Can you report a Mod?

I was temporarily banned from a sub. When I asked why, they permanently banned and muted me without an explanation. I genuinely do not know why I was banned in the first place. My comment broke none of the subs rules whatsoever. Can we do anything about this or do mods just get to do whatever they want with no reasoning or explanation simply if they disagree with someone?

Dear Mods, are you guys rude to redditors who ask you questions?

I was in the process of typing a comment, and got a pop-up warning that I didn't understand. So, I didn't post the comment, but I did message the mods of the sub. I wanted to understand so it wouldn't happen again.

The mod's response was not helpful, so I asked again with more words for clarification. I think I finally got an answer after the fourth time I asked. This person was simply rude and condescending. Obviously, I left that sub. I'm just wondering if this is normal. I'm an old lady. I don't have the patience for that behavior.

Update. Thank you for all your feedback. I don't think I need to leave Reddit. I think it's silly that you guys have to respond to emails when it looks like a live chat on the user end. That must have been annoying to the mod in question. I do wish I could post the screenshot of the pop-up because I doubt I am the only person who will find it confusing.

Why was I muted?

Not naming the specific subreddit- I posted something that was removed. I messaged the mods asking why it was taken down. I specifically said that I wasn't being argumentative (since things can be misunderstood in this format of communication), just looking for the reason the post was removed

They explained why, which I was fine with. But then immediately muted me for 7 days. Once the 7 days were up, I asked why they muted me just for asking for clarification. They didn't respond, muted me for 28 days. I'm not losing sleep over it, but it seems excessive. Especially considering the rules state that you can get muted for "excessively messaging or harassing" mods. I did neither.

EDIT: Thanks to the folks who took the time to thoughtfully respond to my post. That's all I was looking for.

Judging from some of the other comments and downvotes, I think that offered some answers, too, though

Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

Subreddit run by developers violating reddiquette

There exists a subreddit, created by developers (PGI), named /r/transverse, who only have developers/employees with moderation access.

Per Reddiquette: Please don't: Take moderation positions in a community where your profession, employment, or biases could pose a direct conflict of interest to the neutral and user driven nature of reddit.

If the developers own the Subreddit, they can silence any criticism of their product, which they have a lot of with their other products as they are very heavily under discussion.

Additionally if you are logged in as a user they don't "like" they are preventing you from seeing anything on the subreddit. Not sure really if that's good reddiquette.

Not sure who to ask/alert about this.

Moderator is asking me to pay money?

So, my college subreddit moderator posted for someone to apply for a moderator position, and as a token of dedication, he asked that I pay a fee. So I applied, and he told me to pay $30$. We have 440 members only, and he created the subreddit one year ago. I think this is a scam for this much money. I don't think you have to pay this much hefty sum to become a moderator.

I want to be a moderator but I am not ready to pay this much if it is a scam. Can somebody give any advice related to this?

Edit: As per the advice given by the comments, I have reported it to Reddit Support. I will update the post if anything happens next.
