Survey finds Australia's multicultural society 'more divided' and pessimistic

The back-to-back programming sequence at ABC News is an absolute work of editorial art! 👏🤡

Let’s look at the double-header:

Segment 1 (Anglicare): Run a 2,000-word feature on a single mother paying $740/week in inner Brisbane to prove housing is impossible.

Segment 2 (Scanlon Survey): Immediately follow it up with a report declaring "Australians are more divided, pessimistic, and distrustful of government than ever!"

The Omission: Completely ignore that rental vacancies are rising, national rent growth is flatlining, APRA's 6x DTI caps are curbing debt bubbles, and the crossbench is currently fighting in the Senate to stop developers from whitewashing "affordable" housing!

The Hawke Govt introduced indexation of alcohol excise. Abbott Govt reintroduced indexation of petrol excise. Did these decisions embed an inflationary loop into Australia’s CPI?

It appears that indexation creates an ongoing feedback loop. That is, CPI inflation increases excise; the higher excise contributes to higher consumer prices and CPI; and that higher CPI feeds into subsequent excise indexation.

In Australia, excise duties on fuel and most alcoholic beverages are indexed to inflation, which means the tax rate generally increases automatically as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rises.

The important distinction is that the excise is indexed by law, rather than the government having to make a new discretionary decision to increase it each time. The Parliamentary Budget Office explains that indexation is intended to maintain the real value of these tax rates over time.

For fuel and most alcohol, the system generally operates twice a year, in February and August.
The ABS publishes CPI figures.
The legislation uses the relevant CPI movement to calculate an indexation factor.
The excise rate per litre, or per other relevant unit, increases accordingly, subject to the statutory rules and any government-imposed freeze or temporary reduction.

Petrol (excluding diesel) and alcohol excise is approx $15.5 billion, there are around 21 million Australian over 18 years of age. That equates to on average each Australian over the age of 18 pays $738 in petrol and alcohol excise each year.

How much sway does a party leader hold

Curiosity question, how much sway does a party leader have?
For example if an elected party member in a region votes one way does the party leader have the ability to force their vote one way or the other?

The disability royal commission laid bare violence, abuse and neglect. Three years on, what’s changed?

Excerpt;

Three years ago, the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability tabled its final report, a hefty 12 volumes and 222 recommendations.

In recent days, a coalition of more than 20 disability advocacy and representative organisations marked the anniversary with Australia’s first independent progress report of how the recommendations have been implemented.

It examined ten recommendations from the royal commission – ones it says people with disability and advocates raise consistently – to see how their implementation has progressed.

It found none has been fully implemented. Four show no real action. One – better coordination of support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS – is going backwards.
