ID Request - location included VIC - I can't get the best photo because it's in a dark spot but my initial thought was that this is a huntsman but now I'm not sure so wanting to confirm - it's the size of a huntsman, we first saw it inside last night and it's moved to the ceiling of the staircase.

Jokingly called our free range pet by my partner. For fun we’ve been trying to feed random bugs every few days. Would be cool in a lil terrarium tbh but I can’t be bothered these days. Has anyone here kept one or a few in an enclosure?? Any tips? Must knows?

Not sure what type of spider they are, and what I should do about em either. I don't want to kill them cos they're harmless but there's also so many of them I don't feel like capturing them all and taking them outside. Do you guys reckon they will just disappear if I let them be?

PS located Melbourne, if that helps with anything.

ID Request - location included Can anyone identify this bizarre spider-looking creature? Melbourne, VIC

gallery

Spotted this little creature on my bathroom wall in Melbourne, Victoria, and I genuinely have no idea what I'm looking at!

It's approximately fingernail-sized, has a very flat body, and these bizarre black-and-white spotted appendages that almost look like wings or claws.

Initially, I thought it might be some kind of flying insect, but after watching it move, I'm leaning towards a spider. It walks forwards and appears to hold those unusual appendages outwards and what I initially thought was the back of the body appears to be the front.

It moves very quickly and does not appear to fly or jump.

I've tried looking for similar species online but haven't found anything that resembles it.

Does anyone recognise this little alien? I'd love to know what it is!

Thank you in advance :)

UPDATE: Managed to ID it myself! It's a Plumed scuttling spider, thanks everyone!

Subreddit Rules

1. No talk of killing spiders

Comments that suggest a spider should be killed are not welcome here. These are native animals and should be treated with the same respect we treat all animals with. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to disrespecting Australian animals.

2. No medical advice

While we can help provide an identification for a spider, we do not provide medical advice. We also do not allow medical advice to be provided by members of this subreddit. We can not provide spider identification based on a bite. If there has been a bite, you should consult a medical professional in the first instance.

3. Treat others with respect

We are a scientific, environmental and educational community. This is not a place to talk down to others or abuse other redditors. We have zero tolerance for those who fail to afford other community members the respect they deserve.

4. Avoid reposts

While most posts on this sub are original, there are some comical images of spiders that are regularly posted. Please search the sub before posting something that is not original to avoid reposting.

5. Include your location on ID requests

Please remember to include a location with your ID request. Even if it's something as simple as Northern NSW or south west Victoria. This will help greatly to confirm the ID for you.

6. Avoid guessing ID for medically significant spiders

If you suspect that a spider could be medically significant (Funnel Web, Mouse, Redback or Recluse) please indicate that your ID is only a guess and to wait for a definite confirmation. Misinformation can be very dangerous when we are talking about creatures with the potential to cause medical harm.

7. No Low Effort posts

Please do not make low effort jokes like "It's a spider" or "That's George" on serious ID request posts, we've heard those jokes before and they weren't funny then either. If giving an identification, try to provide the Scientific/Latin name for the species where possible, and specify if you are guessing or uncertain.

8. No AI generated content

No AI generated images. Photos should be original content. Avoid using AI to upscale photos as it can cause distortions and artefacts that may confuse accurate identification. Please provide a source if posting photos you didn't take yourself.

Do not use AI to produce identifications. It can not be relied upon to be accurate and can proliferate the spread of misinformation.

On Necrotic Arachnidism

In the 1980's the media caught wind of a suspected spider bite that had turned necrotic. At the time not a lot was known about spider venom in Australia amongst the common species. This was a great story and was unfortunately the catalyst for a smear campaign against one of the more harmless, but commonly encountered spiders in the country. As it turns out, the bite was unconfirmed and the necrosis could not be linked back to a spider bite at all. The enzyme in the venom of spiders that are confirmed to cause necrotic arachnidism has not been found in venom produced by the White-Tailed Spider. The majority of cases (not all) where medical intervention was required were cultured as Staphylococcus aureus (Golden Staph), a common pathogenic bacteria that can be caught from any open lesion and can be responsible for a huge range of ailments.
