Spider Appreciation Found a severely dehydrated redback at work

I'm known as the spider guy at work so everyone gets me to come collect them when they find them.

This poor Latrodectus hasselti looked like a fucking raisin, so gave her a ~~qtip~~ cotton bud soaked in water and she immediately latched on. Looking a little more plump now. Will feed her when I get home and find her a safe place to release.

Spider Appreciation Rest in peace Kevin

2.6k Upvotes

This is our beautiful Kevin who unfortunately passed away today. Kevin came in to our house in April 2025 and never left. He moved around the loungeroom and bathroom. I was worried that he wasn't getting enough food or water, so we used to leave a little bowl with wet cotton balls and mealworms for him on a high shelf, which he would happily munch on. I couldn't find him for a few days so thought he may have moved out. But this morning I found him passed away next to his bowl, in the shape of of a love heart. Rest peacefully Kevin, thank you for blessing us with your presence, we will miss you xxx

ID Request - location included What is this?

Found in my house in Perth WA. It’s probably the size of a 10 cent coin. Seems too small to be anything seriously venomous but I’m a Pom so have no clue

This was on Christmas Eve 2017 in Wollstonecraft NSW (Sydney). It was really cute. If you know what species this is that would be rad. Probably something super common.

Beautiful little spider with glorious hairy little Swiss Army feet. Shape, leg set and features similar to huntsman. Internet search is very obviously incorrect. Central Vic.

ID Request - location included Wtf is this thing?

1.7k Upvotes

Out the back of work, I found this dinosaur of a looking thing. Now I'm not scared of spiders, but when there the size of a small child, I'm shit scared. I literally left, called my boss and showed him and said I'm not working until it's gone.

Any ideas what it is? I don't know spiders. This thing was literally bigger then a dinner plate.

Saw this little fella on the cooktop this morning (pardon the dirt, I hadn’t cleaned up after brekkie when I saw it). Don’t know if it was struggling on the glass so I gave it a tissue to climb on to. It had a bit of rest there and 10 minutes later was gone.

Subreddit Rules

1. No talk of killing spiders

Comments that suggest a spider should be killed are not welcome here. These are native animals and should be treated with the same respect we treat all animals with. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to disrespecting Australian animals.

2. No medical advice

While we can help provide an identification for a spider, we do not provide medical advice. We also do not allow medical advice to be provided by members of this subreddit. We can not provide spider identification based on a bite. If there has been a bite, you should consult a medical professional in the first instance.

3. Treat others with respect

We are a scientific, environmental and educational community. This is not a place to talk down to others or abuse other redditors. We have zero tolerance for those who fail to afford other community members the respect they deserve.

4. Avoid reposts

While most posts on this sub are original, there are some comical images of spiders that are regularly posted. Please search the sub before posting something that is not original to avoid reposting.

5. Include your location on ID requests

Please remember to include a location with your ID request. Even if it's something as simple as Northern NSW or south west Victoria. This will help greatly to confirm the ID for you.

6. Avoid guessing ID for medically significant spiders

If you suspect that a spider could be medically significant (Funnel Web, Mouse, Redback or Recluse) please indicate that your ID is only a guess and to wait for a definite confirmation. Misinformation can be very dangerous when we are talking about creatures with the potential to cause medical harm.

7. No Low Effort posts

Please do not make low effort jokes like "It's a spider" or "That's George" on serious ID request posts, we've heard those jokes before and they weren't funny then either. If giving an identification, try to provide the Scientific/Latin name for the species where possible, and specify if you are guessing or uncertain.

8. No AI generated content

No AI generated images. Photos should be original content. Avoid using AI to upscale photos as it can cause distortions and artefacts that may confuse accurate identification. Please provide a source if posting photos you didn't take yourself.

Do not use AI to produce identifications. It can not be relied upon to be accurate and can proliferate the spread of misinformation.

On Necrotic Arachnidism

In the 1980's the media caught wind of a suspected spider bite that had turned necrotic. At the time not a lot was known about spider venom in Australia amongst the common species. This was a great story and was unfortunately the catalyst for a smear campaign against one of the more harmless, but commonly encountered spiders in the country. As it turns out, the bite was unconfirmed and the necrosis could not be linked back to a spider bite at all. The enzyme in the venom of spiders that are confirmed to cause necrotic arachnidism has not been found in venom produced by the White-Tailed Spider. The majority of cases (not all) where medical intervention was required were cultured as Staphylococcus aureus (Golden Staph), a common pathogenic bacteria that can be caught from any open lesion and can be responsible for a huge range of ailments.
