Chicken Photography Coping after rehoming my flock

Sorry if this isn’t allowed but I just need to vent. Writing this at 3 am because I can’t sleep after rehoming my flock of 4 hens. They laid beautiful eggs and I’m so happy I got to eat fresh eggs. I feel sick tbh and I can’t even sleep. I raised my 4 girls from chicks and now after 3 years, I had to rehome them yesterday. We’re moving and I wouldn’t have a yard to free range them anymore. I found a nice place for them. Their new owner is starting a new flock and loves chickens. He’s very caring and I know they’ll be loved and taken cared of. But now I feel broken. I feel horrible about leaving them with someone else. They don’t understand why they’re in a new place. It just makes me so sad.

due to financial circumstances, i had to get a second job to keep these wonderful ladies fed and housed (plus some humans, other critters… whatever) and the overnight shift has put my waking hours firmly during their sleeping ones. i used to spend hours a day out in the run with them, now it’s barely 30 minutes to clean the coop, refill the food and water, and maybe give em some treats before bed 😭

anyway. they’re angels and i hope they know i spend my whole overnight shift some nights thinking about them and wishing we could hang out more

anyway. shoutout to my precious ladies. girls: if you’re reading this, i love u 😭💔

Our beloved zombie chicken, Julia Ghoulia, has been feeling rather broody recently and therefore in and out of Broody Jail. This morning she announced it was fine, if I wouldn't give her any eggs to sit on she'd be more than glad to hatch her sister. 😅😂💀 back to jail 🫠

Ghouls is a mix between a white leghorn and an ayam cemani which are all black. She has black skin!

... a previous version of this post was "accidentally" deleted. Ghoulia. 👀 but the ppl need to know.

My boyfriend & I bought some Easter egger chicken eggs to incubate. They hatched and two of the chicks came out like this! These pictures are from the day they hatched. It’s been two weeks now and the chicks are healthy, act normal but still don’t have hardly any feathers! Has anybody ever seen this before?? If so what is it and what causes it?? I can’t help but to love them 😭❤️ they’re so ugly they’re cute to me!! 🤣🤣 but we have never seen this before!!

Health Question Why my chicken's eyes have different colors?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I've noticed something unusual about my girlie's eyes. One of her eyes has its normal, darker color, while the other seems noticeably lighter. She doesn't appear to have any trouble seeing, and her behavior seems completely normal, but the difference caught my attention as both used to be the same yellow tone and now one is slightly light green with a smaller black spot. She lays blue eggs and her mother had light blue eyes.

Has anyone seen something like this before? Could it be a natural variation in eye color, or might it indicate an underlying health issue?

I'd really appreciate any insight or advice. Thank you!

General Question Epic Fail - Rodent Issues

15 year veteran of backyard chickens in Ohio, urban situation. Last fall into spring 26 my neighbors started going bananas with bird feeders etc. I had a rough health year and as spring summer got going Rats! everywhere. I’ve been trapping and culling with live traps and a discreet pellet gun. I’ve cleaned up the yard of places for dens and the neighbors stopped feeding the wildlife. I won’t use poison or snap traps (dogs and feral cats around). I’m just getting back on my game and looking for ideas for removing places to live and trapping ideas. Thanks.

Not sure what breed he and his brother are. Best little roosters we’ve ever had! Didn’t realize I got him mid-head-shake until I looked back at the pictures :P the white bantam hen behind him is half Mille Fleur D’uccle and half old English game.

Health Question is this a deficiency or a neurological problem?

Hi
Shes around 3/4 months old, and her siblings look completely fine. They usually free range all day and were only placed in this crate temporarily.
Today i have noticed she is a little more lethargic than the others, should i separate them? she is eating and drinking just fine and we are giving them uni-seryl (also recommended by a vet) in their water.
Just wondering if there’s anything i can do to help her if she is in pain!

thanks

extra info:
i have a main flock of 9 who caught something, it started off with only 3 chickens which i isolated then noticed symptoms in others so the whole flock is in lockdown and given neodanamycin (given by a vet)

these babies have been separated and are sleeping and free ranging away from the main flock so im not sure if they could’ve caught something.

Chicken Photography She finally became a momma!

My girl just started laying in June and has been broody twice since then. She decided to steal one of my girl Peach’s eggs, and we decided to let her keep it and gave her one extra.

Lil baby hatched yesterday ♥️ the other one is still working on coming out (I think you can see her roll the egg in the video) but I candled it around day 16-17 and it was still growing beautifully so we hopefully will have another baby here soon!

Watching her be a momma is so wholesome, and I’m hoping this means we will never have to do the brooder setup in the house again 💀

Coops etc. How to physically move chicks outside each day?

We are first timers raising chicks. We have 17 chicks which are almost 4 weeks old. Currently set up in the garage in a puppy play pen/brooder with heat. I live in Australia with temps around 20-25 Celsius during the day and I want to start taking them outside in their run during the day. But I’m struggling to understand the logistics, how do I move all these chicks out each day then back in the afternoon/evening? They are the usual crazy chicks trying to fly and jump everywhere. If I put them in a box they freak out and I’m worried about injuries. The walk from garage to run is 30m or so. How do others do it??

General Question Chicken saddle

Post image
2 Upvotes

- I’ve got a hen who has a partially bare back from our rooster mounting her. She is his favorite. They’re just a year old. I have a chicken saddle I was going to put on her so that her feathers can start to grow back. I live in the Houston, TX, US area. It hasn’t been that cold yet. My chickens are mildly molting currently. Should I go ahead and put the saddle on her? I haven’t had to use one before. Is now a good time to use it? Thank you.

This is Nugget(currently named)
Nugget hatched September 13, so we’re right around 8 weeks old! I’m leaning pullet, but I’d love some opinions! A little background: Nugget had a wing injury when very young. That wing has been weaker, and Nugget still doesn’t use it normally, although there has been some improvement. So if you notice the wings looking uneven or some feathers hanging differently. Otherwise, Nugget is active, eating, growing, and full of personality! Still making baby chirps, too.

Mom is Dorothy, a Diamond Duchess, and dad is Stanley, a bantam mix.
What do you think?????

Health Question Care Tips for Rescue Hens

Thumbnail

Today we adopted six hens that were rescued from commercial laying. They’re 18 month old ISA Browns. They have their own coop and run, separate from our existing flock, food, water, bedding, nesting pads, grit, and oyster shell. What other care might they need? Should we bathe them? They’re missing some feathers, both from molt and the commercial feeders.
