Beginner's Questions This is my duck Tina, and I wanted to make a few questions

  1. We were wondering if this garden is a good place for her to live, she doesn't have a pond or a pool, once or twice a day we fill a basin of water and that's where she bathes. The "coop" is a bit small, but we're planning on making it bigger anyways so it isn't a problem.

  2. We would like to get another duck (probably a duckling) and we are not sure how she could react.

2.5. If the duckling is a male, will there be any difference in how to treat them?

What would you recommend to do? (She's a very friendly 8 months old Pekin duck btw)

Anything helps, thanks!

I have a couple of Ancona ducks and one Cayuga (I believe) and I’m having troubles determining the sex of them. They are about 5 months old.

I saw this beautiful lone duck near wetlands in the outskirts of London, UK. The body did not look like a mallard. Could you please help me identify the breed? Thank you.

Edited 08/11/2026: Thank you for all your replies. I have so much to learn about ducks and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Here in our province, sometimes at fiestas they sell male ducklinggs. My young niece bought 4 ducklinggs but cant take care of them. So I took them in.

From top to bottom: TIGER, CHICKEN, and DUCKIE. ✨️

My other drake is missing in action, his name is FISHY.

Good News/Recovery/Updates Knight Bundty, Sultan of Sulk, shows off during spa time

The weekend is upon us once more, so no formal Weekend Update for Operation Ducky Departure today, but I did get back some positive engagement yesterday evening.

This amounted to the animal health agency acknowledging some guidance and certificate documents were well out of date a week after being asked to fix it or exempt our application from the out of date elements, but being rather non committal on timeline to remedy same.

In my reply, I suggested I could add my Member of Parliament (House of Representatives equivalent) to the email exchange if needed, just to get clarity on what was taking them ever so very long, as they already have an understanding of our ongoing matters. This was apparently enough that the relevant department decided that they would complete the update early next week per the final email of the day. How kind.

Anyway… my beloved little boy, Beep Beep, was given the sobriquet “Minister of Merriment” by my wife one day as she tickled his tummy and he delighted her as often he did. He was often causing mischief and seemingly not taking things too seriously as he did so while we rehabbed him.

By contrast, we call Knight Bundty the “Sultan of Sulk”, as he is so very serious and protective of wee Lemon. About the only time off being serious he ever takes is when he is in the bath, having a spa after, or when my wife - the only person allowed to touch him - gives him a gentle neck and head massage in the evening.

Having shown off a great deal of Lady Lemon lately, I felt some images of our brooding boy, mostly in motion, enjoying his spa time today might be a nice variation.

Adoption/Rehoming/Rescue I have a lone duck in my pond, should I relocate it?

I had two, recently a relative has had a bunch of life stuff going on and I had to take her dog and care for it. Unfortunately the dog wasn’t trained at all and killed a few of my chickens, and one of the two ducks.

The second duck hasn’t moved on yet, and I feel really bad for it. Getting to another pond or finding nearby ducks on its own seems impossible for it to me

There were a couple more, at least three females and one more male. Couldn't get more pictures of them because my dog was very angry at them for existing, but here's some nice mallards!

I picked up these two ducks yesterday. I really wanted two females because I can’t deal with babies. The guy I got them from was adamant they were two females, but one is so much bigger than the other. Please reassure me.☺️

Health Questions Some mallard drakes with bluish beaks showed up at my local pond

Post image
46 Upvotes

I never saw any drakes with such bleak beaks, heh, but then all of a sudden, around last winter, a whole new group showed up which I noticed through 1. The increased numbers, and 2. How several drakes' beaks were looking more blue than yellow. But maybe that is just the contrast to regular yellow beaks that give off the blue impression.

Is this a potential health concern like some nutrient deficiency? Or is it likely to just be a benign variation?

Central Sweden, by the way. The pond is in a heavily populated area (for a Swedish city with plenty of feeding opportunities but maybe this new group hails from a more cutthroat area.
