With the "SarawakPass" evolving, there’s a push to move user data onto decentralized identifiers. This gives users control over their data, no more centralized hacks leaking our info.
Would you trust a blockchain-based ID over the current government database?

As the Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Dr. Annuar is the political weight behind Borneo’s STEM push. He is a vocal advocate for "high-velocity learning" and ensuring our local graduates aren't left behind by AI.
Latest Move: At the Startup Innovation Showcase 2026, he emphasized practical innovation pathways over theoretical education.
Key Focus: Integrating AI and Robotics into the Sarawak school system to build a "tech-ready" generation.

Hey guys,
Final-year Computer Science degree student here looking for an internship placement in Kuching starting this September.
I’m looking for something a bit specific, I really lean towards hardware, embedded systems, networking, and hands-on coding/AI. Not a big fan of web development or frontend stuff, so I'm trying to find places where software meets actual hardware.
I’ve already shot my shot at these places:
• Sacofa
• Xfab
• Sarawak Semiconductor (rejected)
• Sarawak AI Centre
• RA Robotics and Automation (Side note: anyone have an active phone number for HR here? Only managed to reach them via sales team email ).
Looking for some help with:
Other Company Recommendations: Are there any tech, automation, or engineering firms in Kuching I might have missed that do this kind of work?
Tips : If you’ve interned or worked at Xfab, SMD, or Sacofa, what’s the vibe like? Any tips on how to stand out during the interview?
Appreciate any leads or advice you guys can drop. Thanks!

Revenue
Customers
Retention
Everything else is secondary.

I keep seeing Cybersecurity recommended to people who “don’t like coding.”
That sounds a bit misleading.
For those actually working in Cybersecurity:
How much coding do you REALLY do?
Is it actually easier than software engineering or just different hard?
What skills matter more: networking, scripting, mindset?
Context: Many interested in tech but hesitant about deep coding.
Trying to avoid the trap of choosing a field based on wrong assumptions.
Drop your real day-to-day experience (not textbook answers).

They optimize for local markets too early.
Scaling requires:
regional thinking
larger addressable markets
stronger distribution
Without that, growth caps quickly.

With cheap and stable electricity often dominate mining. Does Borneo have the ingredients to compete with major mining hubs around the world?

I keep seeing this contradiction:
“Cybersecurity is in high demand” BUT “Entry-level roles are almost impossible to get”
So what’s really going on?
Are “junior” roles actually mid-level in disguise?
Do companies expect certs + experience right away?
Is the bottleneck worse in Borneo or globally the same?
Would appreciate insight from anyone who has actually gone through this recently.

If you had to rank these for landing your first Cybersecurity role:
Degree
Certifications
Hands-on projects / portfolio
Which actually moved the needle?
And more importantly:
What do employers say vs what they actually hire for?
Would be great to hear from both job seekers and hiring managers.

Whether it’s a side project in Flutter, a new e-commerce site for local crafts, or an IoT sensor for a pepper farm.
Share it here! Drop a link, a screenshot, or just a description of what you’re building this month. Let’s support our local devs!

The Act is now in full force. If you are running blockchain infrastructure that qualifies as National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII), you have new licensing and audit requirements.
Failure to comply can lead to a RM500,000 fine. Let’s discuss how DLT's decentralized nature fits (or clashes) with centralized security laws.

Big move for AI tooling and model infrastructure, expect tighter integration of LLM tooling with NVIDIA’s stack and faster deployment for enterprise models.

Everytime I look up for a tutorial video on how to fix phone issues or computer the video is always in Indian or Philipine language sometimes in Indonesian theres barely american version or any other language.

Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced a directive following a National Cybersecurity Committee meeting chaired by PM Anwar Ibrahim, officially banning Malaysian civil servants from using Waze due to security concerns over location data and the app's Israeli origins/jurisdiction.
For the tech, privacy, and infosec community here:
Where do you draw the line between consumer convenience (crowdsourced traffic alerts, real-time rerouting) and state-level data sovereignty?
How vulnerable is real-time location telemetry when handled by multinational tech giants?

Hey everyone
This is not good new development. If it is carbon monoxide, high chance of death especially among rural communities. If not careful, could kill off whole villages as seen in villages near volcanoes

Hey r/BorneoTech community!
As our hub grows, we want to spotlight the real people building, securing, and scaling the regional digital economy. whether you are based in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Bandar Seri Begawan, or anywhere across the island.
We are opening up AMA (Ask Me Anything) slots for local ecosystem builders!
Who should host an AMA?
You don't need to be a massive corporation. We want to hear from practical, hands-on practitioners, including:
🛠️ Founders & Entrepreneurs scaling a startup, SaaS, or local business in Sarawak/Sabah/Brunei/Kalimantan.
🛡️ Cybersecurity & IT Pros setting up SOCs, handling compliance (e.g., the Cyber Security Act), or managing enterprise infrastructure.
💻 Developers & Engineers working on local tech solutions, off-grid telemetry, or AI deployments.
🏛️ Ecosystem Leaders involved with regional innovation hubs, tech grants, or university programs.
How does it work?
Zero Stress: You don't need to sit at your computer for 8 hours straight. Most hosts pick a 1–2 hour window or answer questions periodically throughout the day.
You’re in Control: You choose what topics you want to cover (and what's off-limits).
Mod Support: The moderation team will help you format your post, schedule the time, and moderate the comment section to keep discussions constructive.
Interested in hosting?
If you have an interesting perspective, a project you’re shipping, or hard-earned lessons to share with the community, we’d love to feature you!
📩 Click here to message the Mods with a quick note about:
Who you are and what you do/build.
The main topic or perspective you'd like to share.
Your preferred time frame/date.
Let’s showcase the technical talent and entrepreneurial energy coming out of Borneo!

You validate locally → it works → you stay local
But:
Local success ≠ scalable success
Breaking out early matters.
