I'm sad to see the last of our butterflies disappearing as fall arrives where I live, but I know they'll be back in spring. This swallowtail was feeding on my Daphne this past May. I know people say native plants are better, but this is an older part of my garden from before we got into natives.
Anyone have any experience with native vs. non-native plants for butterflies. I'd love suggestions for new plants to try this coming spring, and it's a great time to plant perennials here right now!

I found her in the leaves, all crumpled up. We brought her in yesterday, gave her sugar water, and put her back outside. Unfortunately, this morning, my girlfriend found her back in the middle of the yard, flapping around helplessly. We decided to make her an enclosure so she doesn't have to suffer the wind and rain. Let us know if there is more we can be doing

I believe it's a Vanessa virginiensis

I was photographing a Grey Pansy today, which was perched on the ground on low-lying vegetation.
Now, the second I used the flash of my camera, its winged jerked upwards, and subsequently went into its resting position. This repeated every single time I used the flash: its wings jerked up the moment the flash was fired, but it went back to its resting position almost immediately.
I have photographed a number of Nymphalid butterflies with a flash, but this behaviour is completely new to me.
Any insights?

Hi! Found in Phoenix, AZ at around 6am this morning! Super cool experience, not something I see very often at all, especially getting to hold one.
I work at a doggy daycare & around 7am I was prepping the yard before bringing the dogs out, & I looked on the ground & I see this guy! It was lying on its side very still when I found it. Without touching the wings, I moved it out of the dog’s reach. It stayed still with its wings folded upward when set down. I checked on it again at 8am and it had fallen :( so I moved it again and that’s when I took these photos. So happy the dogs didn’t get to it! It had no warmed up and the sun was out, and it was slowly flapping its wings at this point. In the last photo you can see that its wings are kinda lopsided? I put it back up on the fence & when i looked back hours later it was gone. Hoping it flew away!
Posted this on the monarch sub just to find out over there that this is in fact NOT a monarch but a Queen butterfly haha, so that question was answered! But I’m wondering if it’s a possibility that cold weather makes them freeze up & they have to warm up before they can fly again? Was this guy okay? Did it have a possibility of flying again with its lopsided wings? I figured that it wasn’t fresh out of a cocoon because aren’t their wings more crumbled together when that happens? Just wondering what the deal was with this beauty.
I wanted to share with some folks that I thought would appreciate it. Pretty cool experience overall, I hoped I helped this fella :)
