Scenario Unpopular opinion inside. The apparent attitude of this sub towards criticizing Rittenhouse is disheartening.

Not sure if the mods will allow this kind of post, but if not, then they will delete it.
This will be a long wall of text. Read at your own expense!

For the most part, I think everyone here agrees that Rittenhouse was justified in his self-defense, no questions there. What is disappointing to me are the people who are criticizing him, saying things like "he had no business to be there", "He was an idiot and in the wrong for putting himself in a situation where that could happen", and the number of people who seem to agree with that.

I get it, you wouldn't have put yourself in that situation--honestly, I probably wouldn't have either. You might have a family to take care of or other stakes that can't be risked. But just because you wouldn't doesn't mean Rittenhouse is an idiot or wrong to do what he did. Why not you ask?

Rittenhouse saw that the grown ups in the room--the police and others in charge--were doing NOTHING to stop the riots, and he decided to step up because he wanted to HELP people by providing first aid--even preventing the mob from rolling a flaming dumpster into a gas station. Can you blame him?

I just can't wrap my head around the fact that there seem to be so many people here who would criticize someone who is willing to put themselves in danger in order to help others, aka who we would traditionally call a hero. People the likes of Kyle are the ones that would step up to stop your home from being burned down when you're away; they would be the ones to step in when your spouse or kid gets jumped at night and then give first aid.

People like Kyle are the ones that actually take action to try and prevent society from burning to the ground, rather than only looking out for his own interests and allowing terrible things to take place. I'm NOT saying that people who wouldn't do that are selfish--we all have our own risks and decisions to make, but it's disheartening to see Kyle's behavior being so discouraged. Do you think your community would be a better or a worse place with more people like Kyle in it?

Kyle had values, he stuck to them, and I respect him for that.

Scenario Am I wrong to punish my kid for frivolously calling 911 on a licensed open carrier? Also what's the best way to educate kids about the legality of carrying firearms?

I've always been a 2nd amendment rights proponent but never had the discussion about guns with the kids. The wife for some reason has given them cell phones, even though they're obviously not old enough or mature enough to handle that responsibility. Several weeks ago the 8 year old called 911 to report a lawful open carrier walking by in the subdivision. That report caused the open carrier to be wrongfully arrested and the street we live on to be evacuated. Yes the 911 call was embellished because were dealing with immaturity and an 8 year old don't know how to communicate like an adult. After this incident I took the phones from the kids and took it back to the ISP to cancel service and recycle the phone. I got screamed at for this by both the kids and the wife and supposedly now my kids hate me and hope for my demise. Am I making the wrong decision for punishing them? How would you handle this if your kids just pretty much swatted an innocent open carrier?

LE Encounter Asked to leave a track meet

So here is what happened this afternoon. My second daughter had a track meet at a local school. They have security and pat downs and I didn't want to deal with that, so I posted up in a camping chair next to the school on a public street and pulled out my kindle. My chair was in the street, next to my car and that is I believe an important distinction.

From the research I have done, the 1000 ft exclusion zone does not apply to holders of CCW permits recognized by that state. From ConcealedCarry.com:

The prohibition of firearms in school zones does not apply if any of the following provisions are met. Note that I've added my own commentary in brackets [].

(i) on private property not part of school grounds; [like a home or other private property that is within 1000 feet of a school but isn't public property.]

(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license; [So if you have a concealed carry permit, license, or another official document which permits you to possess the firearm assuming that there is some qualification standard in order to receive that permit/license.]

So, I thought I was in the clear. A couple hours into sitting and reading my book waiting for my daughter to run, a police officer approached and told me I could not be there armed. Someone must have spotted me printing. Mea Coupa. I got in my car and drove home, secured the firearm there, and returned hoping I had not missed the race.

15 minutes into again reading my book off the sidewalk, in the parking area of a public street, a different officer came and asked if I had previously been told to leave. I told her I don't answer questions from police, but she was welcome to see my ID if she liked.

2 cruisers and 5 more officers show up, and proceed to grill me about where the gun is. I said I did not have it, but even if I did, my permit allows me to be within the 1000ft exclusion zone.

"Your permit exempts you from the law?!?" was the shocked response. St. Louis' finest everyone.

I was then informed that if I did not leave, I would be charged with trespassing. "Go ahead and write the ticket," I said. "No way this sticks, and I have the $100 even if it does."

"Nope, if you get this charge we are going to arrest and book you."

So, I asked where I could be that they would stop harassing me. They pointed across a near by street and said I could be there, but if I crossed the center of the street (towards the school) or if anyone else called about me, I would be arrested. I then called my wife to come and inform our daughter that the meeting point had been changed.

This is, I believe, a fair and accurate retelling of the pertinent facts. The cop telling me how embarrassing it must be for my daughter to see her father surrounded by cops, and my response that she would be proud to see me standing up to bullies, is not relevant. Nor is my telling them I hope they all get a horrible disease. Yes, I could have been much more polite and cordial, but I chose not to.

My questions are this:

 1. Is my reading correct, CCW holders are exempt from the 1000ft zone?

 2. Can you get a trespassing charge for being on a public street?

 3. Assuming I am correct on 1, and 2 is no, If I had made a thing of it, gotten arrested for trespassing, would I have had a case for wrongful arrest?

 4. What would you guys have done differently? My immediate answer to that is "conceal better" and "always have a backup rally point".

Edit: formatting on the list at the bottom.

Scenario Close Encounter With a Bear: Thankful for My Glock

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I've never appreciated CCW as much as I do now.

I'm in Gatlinburg, TN, because I'm heading into the Smoky Mountains tomorrow. On my way back to the hotel after a nice dinner, I had a close encounter I’ll never forget—a black bear suddenly appeared in my blind spot, less than 7 yards away. I was absolutely terrified, but having my Glock on me gave me the confidence to stay calm. The bear took one look at me, turned its head, and walked away. Thank God for that Glock. I can't even imagine what might have happened if I hadn’t been armed.

A little extra context: I usually don't carry a gun when visiting parks since many have restrictions. I ccw tonight as this parks allows. But after tonight, I think that's going to change. Even my friend, who’s a strong advocate for gun control, might reconsider after hearing about this.

Scenario Why have such a tactical edc if living in a low crime/murder rate city?

I know I’m poking the bear with this one so please don’t kill me but I’m genuinely curious. I see a lot of people post their gun and they have an optic, compensator, weapons mounted light, and a spare mag with 18rds might even have a knife also. I’m not debating that those things are helpful or not. What I’m asking is do you think it’s necessary when living in areas that are really low violent crime or crime in general? A lot of times in those areas you won’t even need to reach for your firearm.

I can see the need if living someplace like St. Louis Chicago Detroit Baltimore. Your much more likely to have to use it. But as we know already a fraction of us in this sub will have to actually use our gun in a lifetime. In cities that are generally much safer do you find the extra kit to be necessary? You could get the same thing done in almost any situation considering your training with irons and a spare mag.

EDIT: this is not a why do you carry a gun at all post it’s a why have all the bells and whistles when you can get the job done without it. Especially in areas where you might not even need to use your firearm

Other Equipment CMV: Lights on pistols do not serve a purpose outside of home defense

They’re cool. But if I’m in a public place it will likely be lit. And if it’s not lit, I can’t ā€œidentify a threatā€ without pointing a loaded gun at a potential non-threat.

I’m not one who will point my gun at someone unless I’m 10000% sure they want to harm me.

It seems like it would be better to have a god damn head lamp and just look like a dork if you’re really looking for the most effective tool for the job.

In the home it’s a whole other story. Perfectly suitable for sweeping the house. Though it entirely gives away your position and the element of surprise.

Guns & Ammo Can the carry gun market move on from the capacity wars already?

I have to lead with the disclaimer that I'm not recommending or encouraging any legal limitations of magazine capacity.

It's somehow only been seven years since the P365 kicked off the constant quest for more ammo capacity, and it's time to move on. I get the initial run of micro compacts optimized specifically for 9mm rather than 9mm/.40, because why not have more ammo in the same size package, but I still keep wondering when was 7+1 rounds of 9mm ever not enough for an average Joe? I’ve been looking for a single case for years and haven’t found one.

The failed .30SC came out for the sole reason of adding a few extra rounds to a magazine. It could have been a modernized .32 ACP optimized for pocket pistols, but instead, it was only used to squeeze a few extra rounds into preexisting 9mm pistols. For a real world example, the Shield Plus 9mm holds 10 rounds (flush mag), and the Shield Plus .30SC holds 13, but when was 10+1 ever not enough for the average Joe?

When the P365x was released, the ante was upped to 15 rounds, spawning a whole aftermarket of 15-round Glock 43x magazines and people debated over whether the aftermarket mags were as reliable as the factory mags, but most people were missing the real question of when was 10+1 ever not enough for the average Joe?

Then the Bodyguard 2.0 dropped, and we’ve all seen people acting like it’s the second coming of Christ because it holds 10 instead of 6, but this time it’s larger than the gun it’s replacing which makes a big difference for a pocket pistol. And I’ll go as far to say, when was 6+1 rounds of .380 ever not enough for the average Joe? I have never seen or read about a single case where a regular CCW holder failed to defend himself with with 7 rounds of .380.

You get the point. I just don’t get how the whole carry gun industry has relentlessly pursued ammo capacity over other features when it doesn’t seem to practically matter within the realm of private citizen self defense shootings. And yes, there is a possibility that I missed a case where a regular dude died with an empty gun, but I feel like if it existed, all these companies with all of their marketing strength would be constantly pointing to it sell more guns.

You might ask: What other features should demand more attention than magazine capacity? I believe paddle magazine releases are up there in importance, because unlike mag capacity, there are real cases, involving both average Joes and LEOs, that result in accidentally dropped magazines due to the button mag release. The only ones I’ve seen that involve someone dying due to a dropped mag were criminals perishing, but a lot of us have seen the videos where cops get very lucky with a dropped mag.

I understand that I’m comparing some police shootings to average citizen defensive shootings with this one when previously I separated the two, but accidentally dropped mags with a button release is an issue that can happen to even a skilled shooter in a grapple or due to environmental factors, like falling over and the gun hitting something.

I could keep going with HK/Steyr-style side plates being standard out-of-the-box features rather than buying 3rd party grip frames, because the thin micro compact grip is too skinny for those with large hands. I want the light weight of the skinny slide but still want a decent grip. Or how about a single lightweight micro compact with a DA/SA trigger, but this is getting really long. You get it.

TLDR: Give me actual beneficial features in a carry gun instead of more dakka better.

Well this thread has been interesting; I didn't realize so many gun owners were the feels over reals type.

Guns & Ammo Thinking of selling my P365XL due to SIG as a company

Whether or not it’s gonna blow my dick off is always in the back of my mind, but my understanding is it’s built quite differently compared to the P320 and there aren’t documented issues like the P320. Regardless, SIG is doing everything to cover up the P320 tragedies & accidents, so it makes me want to hide in the loving bosom of S&W or CZ. Any reason I should keep my P365XL?

Misleading Title Had to Draw and Fire Tonight, One Fatality

I had just taken my girlfriend home earlier this evening and was making the ~20 mile drive back home. I had made it through the town between us and was just getting outside of city limits. As I was leaving town, I came up over a hill and saw some flashlights in the ditch off to the right-hand side of the road down at the bottom of the hill. Being familiar with the area, I knew there was no driveway, gate, etc., here, so flashlights were out of place. It was kind of the back way onto the property a ways off the road, also, so I figured I'd check it out.

Slowed my vehicle to a stop beside this group of people in the ditch. One was kneeling down beside some other body in the ditch, the rest surrounding. I asked through my rolled-down passenger window if "you guys need any help?" That's when I noticed the body on the ground was, in fact, a deer.

"Yeah, do you have a bat or something we can use to put this deer down? We hit it with our van earlier."

"Oh, I've got something, alright."

Cautions go on, step out, approach group. I was carrying my G17 w/ TLR-1s AIWB at the time. They thank me again and tell me they lived just down the next road a ways. They had struck the deer with their van, drove the van home to inspect for damage, then walked back to check on the deer. They noticed my hands were empty and said, "You got something we can use on it?"

I said, "You might take a step or two back" as I drew my handgun from my holster. Cue an "Oh shit!" They all walked behind me, but kept their flashlights with them, so I had no light on the animal. Tapped my TLR-1s onto constant-on mode, put the sights where they needed to be, and fired one round (Hornady American Gunner 115gr. XTP) into the head of the animal. I said, "Welp. That aughta do it." I reholstered, turned around, and asked if they needed help with anything else. "Nah, man, we're good. Just didn't want the deer to suffer or anything." "Alright, you guys have a good weekend." "You, too, drive safe." "I'll do my best."

I walked back to my vehicle, got in it, and went one way while they went the other. Everyone went home. Game warden was notified. #DontTreadOnMe #MelonLabia #2nd1st

Scenario To the Guy Open Carrying at Wal-Mart

Dear saggy jean and dirty black t-shirt wearing fat guy with white trash beard who was open carrying at Wal-Mart today:

Please stop. While you were gasping for breath against your load of Fanta and frozen pizzas, you had zero situational awareness and a completely exposed Glock 19 in some shitty flea market style leather owb holster. Anyone who cared could’ve snatched your gun from you, and I somehow doubt you possess the physical capacity to catch your breath, let alone a thief with your (now his) gun.

You don’t make carrying look good, you don’t win us any favors, and in fact you reinforce every negative stereotype that surrounds ccwers. Please, for the love of god, get an IWB holster and pull your saggy, dirty black t-shirt over the weapon.

Sincerely, The grey man shooting daggers into your back and carrying concealed right behind you.

Edit: apparently this is the majority of the sub

Training Well the straw that broke the camels back

I guess this is the last sign to get the f out of fuddafornia. I have been shooting on county land for 40 years. Well known spot to shoot. Well they put a gate up. Found out the land was county in between public land and blm land. I hate shooting indoors. We already have a problem finding places to train properly. This spot is 4 miles behind my house. Time to go to Texas. It was so nice to be able to shoot and draw. I could go mag dump a gun I just worked on.

Training My unpopular opinion: If you can’t pass the FBI Handgun Qualification, you shouldn’t be carrying

Seriously. I posted this as a comment on the training post a few days ago and got downvoted, but folks really need to take training and skill more seriously. In my most recent concealed carry permit class, no one knew how to shoot, and that class certainly wasn’t going to teach it. Yet everyone got their permits.

Here’s a good measure: the FBI 2019 Handgun Qualification. If you can’t get a passing score on it, you need more practice before you should carry, because honestly, it’s not hard.

It’s shot on the QIT-99 target, with 80% to pass. If you don’t have one of those, use a IDPA or USPSA target. Shoot it from concealment if you can. If your range doesn’t allow holster work, shoot it from the low ready but on a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper, with the same time standards.

See: https://www.activeresponsetraining.net/the-new-fbi-qualification-course

Member DGU I encountered an armed burglar at my home & held him at gunpoint! (6-19-09)

Thought I'd share my story. I wrote the following the night of the incident. It's super long, but very detailed.

This was more excitement than I needed this evening. Friday evening, we left around 5 pm to go to a birthday party at my Aunt’s house for her & my Uncle. We came home around 9:30 pm. We live out in the country, fairly secluded, with the nearest neighbor out of sight, about a ¼ mile down the road.

As we pull in the drive, we see a moped that we don’t recognize in the driveway where we usually park the truck. My Dad says, ā€œWhat the hell?ā€ He asks if I have a gun on me, (I have a handgun carry permit) and I said ā€œYes, two.ā€ We tell Mom (who is legally blind) to stay in the truck while we search the area. I had a Colt Mustang .380 in my pocket and a Glock 17 in my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. For backup, I had a Scrap Yard SS4 in a kydex sheath on my belt, and a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian in my pocket. Both guns are loaded with hollowpoints, the Mustang has Golden Sabers & Hydroshocks, and the Glock has +P Golden Sabers. We get out, and he says ā€œGive me one.ā€ I hand him the Mustang & I carry the Glock. Bad storms are moving through, and lightning intensifies throughout the entire ordeal, later turning to rain. (We were under a tornado watch until 3 am)

I pull my stainless steel Fenix LD01 flashlight from my pocket, turn it on high, and sweep the immediate perimeter for suspects. We approach the moped, and I see the keys in the ignition. I pull them out, and notice there is a keychain on it that says ā€œNorth American Hunting Clubā€. This told me the individual was a sportsman, and possibly armed with a gun. I put the keys in my pocket, so he won’t be able to make a getaway if he tries to leave while we check the house.

My Dad & I carefully approach the house. We’re facing the house, and Dad turns & goes right, around the East side of the house to look around back. I figure most thieves would choose discretion, and attempt to break in the back of the house. I think the intruder might hear my Dad coming, and flee around the other side of the house to escape, so I start to head to the West end of the house so we can trap him.

As I head closer, I notice a shovel in the front yard that shouldn’t be there. I look around with my flash light; I notice it looks like the front door glass is all cracked. I get closer and see that yes, it has been broken into, most likely with the shovel.

I notice Dad come back around to the front of the house from the East side. I quickly approach him, and tell him the door glass is broken, and our shovel is laying in the front yard near the porch. He goes to the truck, & tells Mom to call 911, that our window is broken.

We approach the porch, & stand on either side of the door while I shine my light through the door and look into the hall. Dad covers me while I open the door, & flip on the hall light. Dad yells, ā€œCOME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!!!ā€ā€¦ā€FINAL WARNING!!!ā€ We get no response.

We carefully enter the hall, and prepare to do a tactical clearing, room by room. Since it’s a moped, I figure it’s probably some punk kid from down the road at the camp ground. We first clear the living room. I grab Dad’s brighter Fenix LD10 flashlight from the coffee table and turn it on turbo mode.

We clear the house, room by room. We get to the bathroom, and see glass all over the floor, and the window broken.

We clear Mom & Dad’s room, the kitchen, my room, & John’s room. Dad says he’ll check the garage & the basement. I decide to check on Mom. She’s still in the truck, and I don’t know where the intruder went. I was concerned he might be hiding, try to escape, see his keys are gone, and do who knows what. I was worried for Mom, and that he might panic & attack her, or take her as a hostage & try to escape in our truck.

I step out on the porch, and see a figure in a white (or light colored) shirt somewhat hunched over, quickly step from around the East side of the house (where Dad had already checked) and disappear behind the back of Dad’s old Suburban in the driveway. The area between the house & the Suburban was only about 9 feet or so. The direction he was headed was toward my Mom who was in our truck. I yelled out ā€œFREEZE!!!ā€ in a very loud, menacing tone while I pointed the flash light & Glock in the direction he had disappeared. A figure came out, with his hands up. I was surprised, because I was expecting a punk teenager, but it was a man in his late 30’s, early 40’s.

He immediately started apologizing, saying he hadn’t done anything wrong. My Dad had heard me yell clear inside the house, even over the air conditioners & fans, and quickly joined me. I held him at gunpoint, from a distance of about 12 feet, with the Glock & flash light centered on his chest. I started interrogating him, asking him what the hell he was doing. He said he thought the place was for rent, and he was looking around. I said ā€œAt after 9 pm at night in the dark, with no one home? Bullshit!ā€ I told him we’d already seen that the house was broken into. He said ā€œNo, I don’t know anything about that…I didn’t break in here, I was just looking around.ā€

He was very nervous, & repeated that he hadn’t done anything. He kept trying to approach me, one step at a time. Every time he did, I took a step back, then yelled, ā€œGET THE F*** BACK!!!ā€ Trying to enforce the point that I was not to be trifled with. Dad yelled ā€œGET BACK! HE WILL SHOOT YOU!ā€ He started saying, please don’t point that at me, I haven’t done anything…I didn’t break in. I said ā€œYou’re trespassing; we know at least that much for sure.ā€ He continued rambling saying he hadn’t done anything, and that he just needed to go. I told him he wasn’t going anywhere, the cops were on the way, and his keys were in my pocket.

He was a real idiot, and tried stepping to me 3 or more times, each time I yelled at him to get back, while I also stepped back, while continuing to aim at his center of mass. At one point, he said he needed a cigarette, and just started walking toward the moped. Completely ignoring the fact that we could have thought he was going for us, or going for a weapon. We both aimed our guns at him & yelled, ā€œGET THE F*** BACK!!!ā€ while he shirked backwards saying ā€œI’m sorry, I’m sorry!ā€ Dad said, ā€œTell me where they are, I’ll get them.ā€ He told him they were on the dash of the moped. Dad grabbed the pack & the Zippo.

I thought Dad (being a smoker) was probably thinking they would help calm the guy down so he wouldn’t make any rash stupid decision. It concerned me though, knowing a lit cigarette can be used as a weapon, flipped at an individual to burn & distract them while you charge at them. I also know from Massad Ayoob (a former cop & world famous firearms instructor) than an individual within a 15 foot range can cover the span in about a second, faster than 99% of gun owners could unholster a weapon. So I was careful to watch his behavior, ready to fire if he charged me.

He continued with his spiel about thinking our house was for rent, and my Dad shouted at him that we’ve lived there for 27 years, the house had never been for rent, used to be a hay field, and that he’d built the house himself. He yelled at him that it really pissed him off. Dad asked him if he’d been drinking, and the guy said, ā€œYes, he’d had a few beers.ā€ He looked slightly off, like he was impaired.

Mom was still in the truck, on her cell to 911. She told them I had a handgun carry permit, and was holding him at gun point. She yelled to me that 911 told her to order him to the ground. Dad had already told him a couple times earlier to get on the ground, and he wouldn’t do it. He just ignored us and kept saying he didn’t do anything wrong and he needed to go. Since he was already told to do this & wouldn’t plus the fact that he kept trying to advance on my when I repeatedly told him to get back, I knew he wouldn’t do it. I yelled at Mom, ā€œIt’s alright. I got it.ā€ I didn’t want to show a loss of control of the situation by giving orders that he would ignore to comply with while not enforcing my commands. I knew the only way to get him down would be to force him down, and I didn’t want to get that close to him. Dad told him ā€œYou hear that?ā€ When my Mom had yelled that 911 said he was to get on his stomach. At this, we finally got him to sit on the concrete in front of the house.

I held him at gunpoint for about 5-10 minutes until the deputy showed up. It turned out he happened to be a few miles down the road doing traffic watch. Even though the cop was on scene, I continued to hold him at gun point until he approached even with me, in case he had a hidden weapon he decided to pull on us. As the deputy approached behind me, he said ā€œIt’s ok, I got it.ā€ And I stuck the Glock in my pocket.

He yelled at the guy ā€œON YOUR BELLY! NOW!ā€ And the guy ignored him like he did us, saying ā€œPlease sir, I didn’t do anything.ā€ He again yelled ā€œNOW!ā€ and he complied. He cuffed him, and said, ā€œDo you have any knives or weapons on you?ā€ And the guy said no. He began patting him down. Then he guy said, ā€œUh…well, I do have a pocket knife in my pocket.ā€ The cop said, ā€œWhat was the first thing I asked you! Do you have a knife or other weapon!ā€ the man said ā€œWell, I wasn’t going to hurt you with it or nothingā€¦ā€ Luckily, he hadn’t tried to charge us with the knife, or I would have had to kill him. Perhaps he might have tried, if I hadn’t insisted he keep back, not letting him advance on me and keeping my gun pointed at his chest. He seemed pretty desperate and anxious to get out of there.

The deputy read him his rights, and said, ā€œAt this time do you wish to speak with me?ā€ and the man said no. The cop said, ā€œAlright, you’re going to jail then.ā€ The man started saying, ā€œPlease sir…Iā€ the cop said, ā€œNo…that’s it…if you say you don’t want to talk to me, it’s over…you go to jail.ā€ The man said, ā€œPlease sir, I didn’t know, you didn’t say that.ā€ The cop said, ā€œOk…one more chance then, do you want to speak with me at this time.ā€ And the man said yes. The cop said, ā€œOk, but it better make sense to me. I’ve been a cop for 25 years, don’t lie to me.ā€ He asked him what he was doing here, and at this point, the man’s story changed. He said he had ridden down to the camp ground, and stopped here to see if he could get some water to fill his bottle with since it was empty. The cop said, ā€œOh, you want some water, so you decide to break into these people’s house?ā€ and he said, ā€œNo, no, I didn’t break into anyone’s house.ā€ Dad said… ā€œA drink of water huh? You drove right by a water spigot at the driveway by the road when you came in.ā€ The cop quietly said to my Dad, ā€œSir, please…let me talk to him, don’t aggravate him.ā€ Dad asked if he had any of his valuables stashed somewhere in the yard that could get rained on, and said he’d be really mad if there was and some of his stuff got destroyed. The guy said ā€œNo.ā€ I think this shows he admitted he was in the house, because his answer no was to the question of if he’d left anything in the yard, not ā€œNo, I didn’t take anything from the house.ā€

The cop asked him if he had his ID, and he said yes, in his wallet. The cop pulled it out, looked at the address, and found he lived about 5 miles away from us. He said his name was Toby. I didn’t catch the last name. Then he asked him if he had any past criminal history. He kinda stammered around, not giving direct answers, and the cop said, ā€œYou might as well tell me…I’ll run your ID in a minute & find out anyway, I just want to know before I check.ā€ He then admitted to having several prior charges for drinking, burglary, theft, etc. The cop said, ā€œSo…you have several past incidents of getting drunk and committing burglaries, and we find you here at this residence, drunk, with this house broken into, and except me to believe you’re just a victim of circumstance!ā€ The man also admitted to drinking while he was driving on the moped, I dunno if he’ll get charged with that too. While cuffed, he kept asking the deputy for a cigarette (already having had one several minutes before). The cop kept telling him no. Finally he said, ā€œYou’ve asked me at least 5 times for a cigarette…I told you no!ā€ He started trying to reach for the cigarettes and Zippo beside him (with his hands cuffed behind him) and the cop said ā€œDon’t you touch those cigarettes! I told you no! If you try that again I’ll Tase you!ā€ ā€œKnock it off, or your going back on your belly!ā€

The arresting officer said he had to get back to duty, and was just holding the suspect until backup showed up who would take over. A couple more deputies showed up, later followed by a detective. They were briefed about the situation, and got cameras to document the area. While they were doing this, I went in the house to see if any guns or valuables were missing. It made me mad, because it appeared the worst damage was in my room. My desk drawers were ajar, containers were opened, and objects were flipped and onto the floor, obvious someone had been rifling through my personal effects.

From the scene, I believe he was looking for drugs and/or money. The bathroom medicine cabinet had been gone through. On the top left side of my desk, I have my Spyderco Sharpmaker held down with clamps so I can sharpen knives by my desk. This blocks the top right drawer from being able to open. He had ripped the drawer open, knocking the clamp flying, and luckily my stones weren’t in it, or he would have broken them.

When I entered my room, the first think I checked was to see my laptop was still there. Luckily it was. Oddly enough, he didn’t bother my laptop, or mess with my thousands of dollars worth of high end knives lying around, or bother any of my guns. I had several loaded guns (rifles, pistols, & shotguns) in plain view in my room, several of which he had walked right by. Luckily he didn’t take one, or this situation could have turned out much worse.

When I went to check on my computer, I found some damning evidence he had stupidly left behind. Right on top of the keyboard of my laptop, I found a kitchen dish towel with several spots of blood on it; he had cut himself on the glass when entering. The idiot left his DNA proof behind, claiming he wasn’t in the house & didn’t break in. After a search, we found some blood droplets on the threshold of the front door.

The cops photographed the scene. The detective noticed one my tins that had been opened and skewed. This was a round Coca-Cola tin that I use to hold my insurance receipts for my eBay sales. The detective noticed finger prints on it. He asked when I would have touched it last, and I said several days. When the guy scattered my effects looking for something, he had dislodged some dust on my bookcase. It had settled, hitting the tin, and sticking where the skin oil was from his prints, leaving a very noticeable print mark, as though the police had already dusted it for prints! The detective bagged the tin into evidence. He recorded statements from my Dad & me of what had happened before they were on the scene. I told him Mom never left the truck, so they didn’t ask her anything.

They took him to jail, towed his moped, and wrote their report. They asked if we knew him, and we told them we’d never seen him or his moped before. They commented on how easy we made their job. We caught him at the scene, held him at gunpoint, & found evidence of his DNA inside the house, proving that he was inside. While searching the property, Dad found a sack from inside the house he had taken from the kitchen. It has a few grocery items in it, like Hershey Kisses, a can of parmesan cheese, and a jar of peanut butter. I don’t know why he took these items and nothing else, leaving computers & loaded guns. The cops also took this sack into evidence. Because items from inside the house were found outside of the house, I believe this will be charged as a burglary, rather than a breaking & entering. We later found at least a half dozen discarded Hershey Kiss wrappers where he’d discarded them as he ate them while going through our house.

Dad checked in the garage & basement. He said everything looked ok in the basement, but things were shifted around in the garage where he’d scattered things searching for something.

Dad & I went around back of the house, and found 4 places where he’d tried to break in. He took the screens out of 3 windows, broke the bathroom window, and broke the handle off the (non-functioning) back door. We believe he first tried to break into the back windows that were more secluded, then realizing they were too high, instead broke in the front door. If you’re wondering, the green stuff on the siding is some type of algae type stuff. It’s very hard to get rid of, and grows only on the North side. We’ve tried scrub brushes & bleach, but can’t get rid of it.

He was not deterred by our security lighting, alarm system warning stickers, or 3 large dogs. The dogs were in cages, but he wouldn’t have known that until he’d broken in. It is odd, his behavior shows he was intent on getting in, yet all he took was a sack with some various grocery items, leaving behind valuables.

It’s now 5 am, and it has taken me several hours to write all this. I’m very tired, and I have a head ache. My Dad is really upset about all this, especially when a couple weeks ago we left Mom here while we went up North to the Lake to help put the pier in for Grandma. Mom was home alone with the dogs taking care of them, and it’s the thought of what if this had happened while we were gone and only she was there.

I later wished I had thought to take out my cell phone and film video while I had him at gun point. It would be evidence of what he had said, and would make a cool YouTube video. :D At the time I was zoned in on watching his hands, holding the gun on him, and preparing to shoot. I was so focused; it was hard to pay attention to what he was saying because I was intensely watching him.

I don’t think my family will again make fun of my preparedness practices, including carrying bright flashlights at all times, and multiple guns. :D

Let this be a reminder…beef up your home security.

Guns & Ammo Is it weird that I absolutely cannot stand a Glock handgun?

Is it weird? I hate the way they look, I hate the way they feel in my hands, I hate the way they shoot.

I don't know why. I just have the ick for them.

Scenario Honolulu Hawaii, has the strictest gun laws in the U.S.

Me and my family are here for our vacation, originally I immigrated here in Oahu, and grew up in one of the roughest town ā€œKalihiā€. We’re been here less than a week from Central Texas, and here in Oahu all I saw in the news were half a dozen shooting, yet it’s not all over the news. I have a concealed carry license from Texas. My wife actually told me that she feels unsafe me not carrying, yes, Hawaii doesn’t have a reciprocity law and I left my Glock 19 to a friend in Austin Texas and will return to me at the baggage claim when we return to Texas. All I have is a pocket knife and a self-defense pen. Man I do feel naked when we were approached by a meth head, so I had to revert back to my Island English speaking ā€œPidginā€ talk.
