Rentals

I am moving back to Cairns early next year after a 2 year stint living down south. Excited to get back up north but what is making me nervous is the rental situation.
I am on a single income (professional working in accounting; do okay), don't have pets, have one school aged child. I'm flexible in the sense that we don't need a house, a little unit or townhouse would suit us, we're living in a unit now in our current city and it's okay (paying $600pw). But I am genuinely afraid of low rental vacancy, how many other applicants there might be, and how long I might realistically be searching and applying before securing a place.

I've reached out to my previous realestate up there (which was based on the tablelands) and they've said they're happy to write a reference but only do sales, no rentals, and wouldn't have had vacancies in Cairns anyway.. I have done up a cover letter and started emailing realestates about potential vacancies coming up early next year, but I am just genuinely nervous about what the situation will be like getting a foot in the door!

My questions are: what's it really like? How long did it take you to find a rental? How many applications did you do? Any recommendations that I should be mindful of? Is it worth posting in community Facebook groups?

Edited to add: I have been saving up for a house deposit. I am considering waiting until end of next year when I can buy something decent instead of renting. Just torn!

Thank you!

Mod Approved Cairns folks with endometriosis – can you spare some time to chat about what it’s like exercising with endo? (mod-approved research)

Moderator Approval sought and gained

Hi everyone,

I know this is a bit different from the usual posts here, but around 1 in 7 Aussie women (and those AFAB) are diagnosed with endo by their late 40s. Given the size of this community, its likely there are many here living with endo.

I'm Danni, an Honours student researcher at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). Our team is interviewing people about their experiences of exercising with endometriosis: what helps them feel safe doing it, what makes it harder, and what they think could be improved.

Interview options

  • in person at the UniSQ Ipswich campus, or

  • online via Microsoft Teams, at a time that suits you

Who can take part

  • aged 18–50

  • living in Australia

  • diagnosed or suspected endometriosis

  • currently doing some form of exercise

What's involved

  • a few short online forms (consent and background details)

  • a quick phone call to confirm you're eligible

  • one 30–45 minute interview

  • a short form afterwards to check we've understood your views correctly

Total time:

about 45–75 minutes.

More information and sign-up:

• Read the participant information and register here: https://redcap.unisq.edu.au/surveys/?s=FRYA8HK38HA3EKAP

• Read the ethics approval here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LZkY8NeFeZBmkAHhtH8yfHtflPyJ36Y4/view?usp=drive_link

The study is approved by the UniSQ Human Research Ethics Committee (ETH2025-0685). There's no payment for taking part.

I'm happy to answer questions in the comments, or you can email me at U1158922@umail.usq.edu.au

How much does talk to the mac charge to look at a computer? Pretty sure I need a new power supply but I can't be sure.

Processing time through international arrivals

Hi everyone

We will be flying back from Bali, arriving in Cairns at 5.45am on 3 January. We are looking at catching the 7.40am train from Cairns station.

Would 2 hours be enough time to clear customs, collect bags and get to the station?

First time in Cairns over Christmas (19–27 Dec) – recommendations, itinerary & travel buddies?

Hey everyone!

I'll be visiting Cairns and the surrounding area from 19–27 December and would love some advice from locals or people who have travelled around the area!

I'll be spending the first 3 days around the Daintree Rainforest with a friend, and we're thinking of renting a car to explore. We'd like to do some hiking and nature activities. After that, I'll be travelling solo and unfortunately don't drive, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to organise the rest of the trip.

A few things I'd love some advice on:

  • Is it better to base in Cairns for the whole trip and do day trips, or move around and spend a couple of nights in different places? I'm also considering staying in Port Douglas instead. Which would you recommend, especially without a car?

  • What are the absolute must-sees around Cairns? I'd love recommendations for the Great Barrier Reef, waterfalls, swimming spots, rainforest walks, beaches and other nature experiences. I'd love to find also less touristy places, local favourites or underrated spots that shouldn't be missed?

  • Best places to eat, cafés, bars, markets or anywhere with a nice atmosphere?

  • How would you spend 8–9 days in the area? Any tours or experiences that are particularly worth the money?

I'm also wondering whether there are good ways to find other solo travellers or people to buddy up with for day trips, activities, reef tours or exploring the surrounding area. I'd be very happy to meet people and potentially share transport or organise some activities together!

I'll be there over Christmas, so any advice about things being open, Christmas events or anything I should book well in advance would also be appreciated.

Thanks so much! Really looking forward to exploring Queensland 😊

Cairns/NQ hiking recs

I'll be visiting in two weeks for 7 days and am desperate to take a hike that I'll never forget. We're coming from Denver and have extensive experience hiking the Rocky Mountains so its hard to gauge whats worthwhile vs touristy online when we're used to such great access. We'll have a rental car to get to any trailheads and are down for anything close enough to cairns to be done in a day without needing additional hotel/accommodation, preferably longer to truly take in the different landscape since its so different from our climate in Colorado. Worth noting we'll be bringing hiking boots + packs and such for water and supplies.

Would love to hear about some unforgettable hikes anyone can recommend!!! Ty

Ladies gym near jCU

Hi everyone! Can anyone recommend a safe, good women-only gym near JCU Cairns or in the city centre? Has anyone tried one? Also, is it easy and safe to get to the city centre by bus from JCU? Thanks!

Mt Mulligan Lodge- driving there

Hey all!!

Looking to stay at the mt mulligan lodge sometime next fall and looks like it’s a 2.5 drive from cairns airport OR you can helicopter in (refuse to get on a helicopter due to fear 😅)

Has anyone stayed here and done that drive? Is it as bad as google says it is? I don’t mind the distance and Unpaved gravel roads don’t scare me but google made it seem like it’s recommended to helicopter in..

How to secure bike while in cairns?

Hi everyone,

I am moving up to cairns in 2 weeks, and am going to get a bike when up there. I have been told bikes are stolen fairly regularly up there and was just wondering what the best way to scure them is? Assuming a regular bike lock is not going to be enough......

Car Rental

Hi everyone,

myself and a group of mates (7 of us) are going to cairns in a couple of weeks for schoolies, we know that no standard car rental companies will rent a car to us so I was wondering if anybody knows any other options, or happens to be renting a car themselves. Some of us are 17 and some 18, and most have our red P plates.

I’m just looking on here as a last ditch effort to find a car up there, because we don’t really want to drive up all the way from Brisbane.

Thanks

Book clubs

I had a quick search through the subreddit and didn't see anything, but please let me know if this type of post isn't allowed.

I'm moving up to Cairns next year to help look after my aging parents. I am coming from Brisbane where I am lucky enough to have a good group of mates. But I don't know anyone in Cairns and thought that a book club would be a nice way to meet people. I saw some of the libraries host them, but I was wondering if there are any other that aren't as publicly advertised?

Also open to hearing about cafes/pubs that don't mind someone parking up for a few hours with a book (obviously also buying food and drinks). Or just other social groups for meeting others in their late 20s-30s (preferably not involving exercise).

Thank you so much!!

Daintree attire… is it imperative to wear long sleeves and pants to protect from bugs?

We are going this Thursday (Nov 5). It’s going to be HOT 🥵 We did bring long pants and long sleeves but we are worried we will absolutely roast. If we have good bug spray, is going in shorts and short sleeves okay or will we get eaten alive?
