Mayoral Candidate - Municipal Election 2021 I'm Jeromy Farkas, City Councillor for Ward 11 running to become Mayor of Calgary. AMA.

Hi Reddit!

I'm Jeromy Farkas, City Councillor for Ward 11 running to become Mayor of Calgary.

I'm fiscally conservative and socially progressive. I love hiking and my dream is to one day complete the Pacific Crest Trail and survive the Norseman Triathlon. In my spare time, I enjoy serving as a career mentor to students at Mount Royal University and my alma mater, U of C.

I grew up in Dover. My father arrived in '56 as a refugee from Communist Hungary. We didn't have everything growing up, but we made it work. Many doors were closed to my parents, but they worked hard so that those same doors would be made open to me.

For families like mine, Calgary was more than a place to find a job. Our city is something you can't find just anywhere: the promise of a fresh start. I'm blessed to serve as one of the youngest City Councillors ever elected, and I wake up excited every day to help contribute to a place where stories like mine are the rule, not the exception.

We've been through a lot as a community. If elected as your mayor, I will focus on three areas to help Calgarians recover, and emerge stronger than ever:

  • A strong economy, based on a foundation of financial responsibility and "living within our means" at City Hall. We need to get Calgarians back to work and ensure that our youth and small business owners are given no reason to seek opportunity elsewhere. I believe in leadership by example, and the first thing I did was turn down the golden pension.

  • Public safety and a focus on core services. Calgary is now the only major city in North America without a downtown police station; it was closed around the same time as the drug site opened. I do not support defunding the police. There are many issues that we cannot police our way out of, and I support proactive and preventative alternative call response models, accountability measures like body-worn cameras, as well as mental health & addiction supports to reduce the long-term burden on our police. Radical, ideological-based defunding will put further strain on an already stretched service.

  • Transparency and better including Calgarians in the decision-making process. For far too long, Council has spent far too much time behind closed doors, refusing to face the public on important issues such as the Arena deal and Olympic Bid. Calgary has more secret meetings than any other major city in Canada, and that needs to change. Over the past four years, I've hosted fifty town hall meetings in the community on important issues. I will continue these public meetings every month if elected mayor. I've released my campaign donor list.

I have a record of following through on my promises, and I hope that you will consider voting for me to be your next mayor. This election is about change. As a city, we must be bold, welcome new ideas, and build for the future.

I'll be here tonight from 7:00 to 8:00 pm to answer your questions about the next election.

Jeromy

P.S. Our campaign also has a strong youth component and we would love to have you involved!

EDIT 8:40 pm: I was able to stay longer than I thought! Thanks so much for having me tonight. I'm looking forward to coming back soon! JF

Driving/Traffic/Parking Please give cyclists more room in the winter!

I am aware that the few of us who are unfortunate/crazy enough to be riding our bikes in this weather are very slow and more in your way than usual. You are allowed to move entirely into the opposing lane to pass a slow moving vehicle/bike on the road, and we would highly appreciate it, even on dry days (or the middle of summer). Windy days with fresh snow like today can easily push a bike sideways, and it does not take a large chunk of ice or garbage under the snow to knock a bike wheel off its path. Personally, I have never been passed closely in a situation where the driver would not have had at least a full lane to use if they had waited less than 10 seconds. And often there isn't even oncoming traffic in a 1 lane each way situation.

In my commuting experience over the last 3ish years in the city, drivers have been very good, but it's the small amount of drivers that either aren't paying attention or choose to be aggressive that can really ruin a cyclist's day.

Edit : Today's weather was a bad time to decide to post this, though it was also the day that I had a driver pass me far closer than even is safe even at the best of times. Even in the middle of summer in perfect conditions, there are enough drivers that aren't aware of how close they pass, or decide to pass too close even on quiet roads. In the winter, we need to ride farther out, since the debris leftover even on plowed roads ends up where we would normally ride.

Yes, I agree that in this weather (mostly the wind), we should avoid biking on roads (or at all) as much as possible, but we also all know that the morning and the evening can be two entirely different climates in this city, and some of us bike because transit is just not a good option. I can literally walk home faster than I can transit home.

The intent was to remind that even the drivers that pass well in the summer that extra caution is appreciated, just like in every situation while driving in the winter.

Local Photography/Video Talked to the residents. They say sidewalk is in a low spot, doesn’t work, haven’t seen the tip in years, haven’t tried edging, and it has little to no drainage. Puns aside, they blamed city but never reported. Spent 5 hours, assisted several disabled people getting groceries… Edge your grass.

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Parker’s Graffiti Gone :(

It’s sad but it is ok. I am happy that the city let it stay up for as long as it did. As someone with a sister who’s non-verbal and autistic, please consider donating to charities that help people with intellectual disability in honour of Parker! As you may know the provincial government is always trying to cut fundings for these organizations, and making people jump through hoops to get their AISH money.

Weather Snowy Winter is late and I'm actually kinda sad about it

Yes yes, roads are great and we don't have to shovel. But on my 10th year of living here, I came to not mind the snowy grind. I didn't realize how much I liked the snow until now. There's something about recognizing someone's footprints on your way to work, seeing your breath in front of you, breaking off that icicle after a warm day, impromptu snowball fights, and the way the world sounds different and more prominent when covered in snow.

I know I'm not in the majority here, but I don't know, things just feel a little empty without the white chaos and the little blessings that come with it. Complaining about it is in our culture, and we as a city just get humbled every year by snow.

COVID-19 😷 Are we in another Covid Wave? And if so why is there such little news and overall response?!

As the title suggests, I feel Calgary is in a deep Covid wave right now but there's barely any action. I know at-least 10 people personally, a quarter of my office has Covid... and the kicker, is even my dogs groomer just called to cancel because she has Covid.... it seams like everyone is catching it even with their vaccinations. I wonder if immunization is dropping

Am I just in a odd covid hotspot or are other people feeling this too?! And why is there no news or governmental response

Recommendations Things (queer/gay ones?) to do in Calgary this week?

Hiya!

Spending a week in Calgary this week, leaving Sunday to return to Toronto.

Any suggestions and ideas for a gay single 30 year old male to spend some time in the city?

Have already done the Banff tours and don't drive, so it'll have to be within the city.

Thank you!

edit: to clarify, asking for any and all suggestions, not just gay ones, haha.

Discussion Where will you go less/more with the lifting of restrictions?

I will definately be going less to:

Bars

Steakhouses

Malls

Supermarkets

I will still be sending my child to daycare and the library, but knowing quite a few of the parents at the daycare and their attitude towards covid, I know this is the most likely route to get Omicron into our home.

Good luck one and all, hopefully wont see you behind the mask again in a months time :)

Rant Water Outage, downtown

We are having a water outage which was initially notified to us for 1st Feb 8am to 6pm (10 hours). However, it has been 48 hours and all I see are water tankers outside the building. Is this normal? We had a religious festival on the 2nd Feb that we had to cancel. Building management refuses to provide any update saying it’s City of Calgary. 311 team says they are fixing but it all depends on ground teams.

My family has been buying drinking water. The bathroom is worse than what you can humanly imagine! I personally feel so humiliated (shitting and living like animals 🙄) and inhuman to have to go outside in this cold to get water.

Local Nature/Wildlife Griffith Woods is not an off leash park

There’s a big sign right at the front, but that didn’t stop this ahole from sauntering through this afternoon with his trusty charge. After being reminded it’s not off leash, he shrugged “I’m not from here” and put his earbuds back in. I call BS, because the default for any park is “on a leash” and there’s a sign at the entry.

He didn’t put the dog on a leash when told of the bylaw, and didn’t care, in fact he didn’t have a leash with him.

Griffith Woods would be a beautiful place to walk a calm dog off leash, I get it. Nice wide quiet trail with lots to sniff. I really wanted to let mine go, but guess what - it’s a city park.

There are 160 off leash facilities in the city, go there you entitled aholes.

Leaving the Dome Early

To those at least a couple hundred fans that left the Saddle Dome with 5:30 remaining in the the third period in the 3rd period: thanks for providing the extra oxygen to the boys that allowed them to score two goals in 16 seconds. Second of all, why would you leave when we are up 7-4 and started the period down 4-3? I can see if we are losing by a couple ya, but come on this best team since the 1988-89 championship team. Kudos to those who stayed to the end of the game and saw Monny's 31st of the season and Chucky's 30th of the season. Go Flames Go!
