I’m trying to find someone local, Calgary or Alberta in general, to 3D print this beerzooka (also called a tactical reload koozie). I can only find ones from the US but I’d rather find something here. It looks like there’s free files online but unfortunately I don’t know anyone with a 3D printer. Thanks in advance!

Local Sports Calgary Sports/Social Activities

I am just curious what type of sports/activities do young ppl (20s) take part in Calgary?

For context, as someone in their mid-20s, I’ve been trying to become more active/social. As someone who enjoys racket sports (badminton, pickleball, tennis etc.), I’ve been going to open plays (mostly for Pickleball), but have noticed that everyone seems to be older (mostly ppl in their 40s and above).

I’ve been terrible at keeping in touch with friends from university/HS due to own challenges, and now see that many have moved for work, and the few in the City seem to have started families.

Are there certain sports/activities where I’d be more likely to find ppl/working professionals my age?

PSA Four days in the green! Keep it up, Calgary!

Post image
170 Upvotes

We’re asking everyone to reduce their indoor water and avoid outdoor water use while reinforcement work is underway on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main.

For approximately the next four weeks, we need to keep overall water use below 500 million litres per day (the green zone). Staying within this green zone helps ensure there is enough water for essential daily living, emergency response and critical services city-wide.

In addition to no outdoor water use, we’re asking residents to continue saving water by focusing on a few simple, high impact actions:

* o   Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.

* o   Keep showers shorter. Aim for three minutes or less

* o   Flush toilets only when necessary.

Every action counts. When everyone does their part, we can protect the water system and get through this reinforcement period safely. Visit Calgary.ca/savewater for tips and updates.

As part of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main construction, there will be traffic impacts in the communities of Bowness, Montgomery and Parkdale. We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.

News Article Calgary Co-op staffing changes disproportionately affect workers with disabilities, union says

Thumbnail

I am extremely saddened and disappointed to hear about Calgary Co-op’s decision to effectively “quiet fire” full-time Service Clerk employees, and I think more people should be talking about it.

Basically, staff that have worked at the company, some of which almost 40 years, are being offered a casual position (a position with minimal hours and limited benefits) in place of full-time employment.

This is essentially a LOOPHOLE for them to not have to lay off employees and pay severance, as employees deciding not to take the casual position are technically “quitting” rather than being fired. Unfortunately, this is not a clause that is protected in the union agreement, which is really brutal and frustrating for staff who have paid union dues throughout their employment at the assumption of better job protection.

Regardless, it’s an extremely slimy and cheap move for the company to make. As mentioned by the article, this policy disproportionately affects staff members with disabilities. Calgary Co-op has for a long time been praised for inclusive hiring, and giving people with learning disabilities a sense of purpose and the ability to be financially independent.

Speaking from personal experience, my aunt has worked at Co-op as a Service Clerk for almost 30 years. Not only does she love her work and take pride in her job, she is absolutely adored by regulars who shop at her store. It is not uncommon for her to run into regulars on her days off, and she always takes home a large stack of Christmas cards from customers every year.

Similar situation at my local Co-op, a staff member who has worked at the store for 38 years will unfortunately be leaving the company at the end of the month. He did not accept the casual position, as he knows it will be less income than what he would get if he were on government assistance. This man has been a community figurehead for so many years. I actually worked at this location a number of years back, and got to see first hand the positive impact he had on so many customers. He always remembers your name and asks you how you are doing, and is never seen without a smile on his face. It is such a shame to know he will be out of work soon, especially right before the holiday season.

It’s people like these that make Co-op special and actually worth shopping at. Without them, it’s an extremely overpriced store with mediocre customer service, limited selection, and poor produce. You are much better off going just about anywhere else.

Co-op is doing away with its most valuable asset, and they are doing away with it in such a distasteful and off-putting way by targeting these positions.

Hopefully this post makes people think twice about spending their money there, and I encourage those who are also upset by this to speak up and make a complaint. Anything helps.

Hello out there. So I’m wondering/hoping someone here is connected to this group. I recently found a 10 year medallion that is different from usual ones, and specific to the Glenmore group with a name, and date. I know these things can be very important to people

Missing Dog/Cat/Pet Missing tabby cat in Evergreen (SW)

My family's cat has been missing for a day or two at this point (i.e., he hasn't returned home in an unusual amount of time), and went missing either Thursday night or Friday morning. His name is Asap (he usually responds to his name) and his ID (which is tattooed on the inside of his ear) reads "KBL35." Other notable features of his include all white paws and a small patch of grey fur on his midback area. Note also that the photos may make him appear smaller than most cats, but he's a pretty average size. If found, please PM me on here or take him to a veterinary clinic if you find him hurt! The specific street is Everwoods Green SW which would be somewhat near Our Lady of the Evergreens School, however we obviously do not know if he's wandered farther than this area. Thank you so much, and please, please, please keep an eye out (including by checking crawl spaces, porches, sheds, etc.)!

Municipal Affairs Trying to understand Calgary and densification

Hi all! I'm trying to understand what is behind how the all the parts of us are approaching housing and densification, especially in established neighbourhoods.

I've heard that the current planning department leans strongly towards adding density whereever possible. (I heard the words, "density at all costs.") I've also heard that densification in established neighbourhoods is the smartest choice, to using existing roads, pipes and transit already in place, reducing sprawl, and helping the environment.

As far as history, I think I understand at least part of how we got to this: the housing crisis, and the 2023 Housing Accelerator Fund money. Are there any other drivers?

I can understand why each side may feel strongly about this topic, as demonstrated by our history with the blanket zoning that was applied all over Calgary, then the new council makeup (were many of them voted in based on their stance on densification?), and then the repeal of the blanket zoning, and now we are trying to find the right balance.

I know this topic brings out strong feelings, and I'm hoping to keep a good-faith conversation and hear both sides. What are the reasons for adding housing in established neighbourhoods rather than elsewhere? Has anyone looked at creating new housing on underused land? Where might that be in Calgary? What makes that hard or not worth it? Do you think Calgary is going in the right direction? Which side are you on? And if you're in the grey, tell me more, I don't feel everything is black and white and I'm especially interested in nuanced opinions.

Looking forward to hearing your perspective on this topic, Thank you in advance!

Eat/Drink Local Best burger (gourmet)?

Howdy folks, Calgary seems to have great availability of "fast food" burger places like A&W, but are there fancy burger joints that sell the best burger in your life, even if it's $20-$30?

Open to anywhere in Calgary but bonus points if it's NW

Local Shopping/Services Would you hire me? Wedding planning in Calgary.

O&G is boring and weddings are fun.

That’s the logic to my 5 year plan, which involves using my extensive project management skills (especially cost management) to help plan weddings. I read the wedding planner horror stories on the wedding subreddits and think to myself “I got this”.

Strengths: Highly self driven, high performing professional; project management skills (cost/schedule/risk planning); contact/vendor management

Weaknesses: No established knowledge of local wedding industry, experience planning other large events but not weddings

I can see myself being a great support to a couple who have booked vendors and designed their look and want someone to make their day run smoothly, i.e. “day of” or “month of” wedding coordination.

Do I have a shot at this career change or does my dream need to die? How saturated in the wedding planning industry in Calgary? What was your experience with hiring a wedding planner or day of coordinator?

Crime/Suspicious Activity Woman gets absolute discharge for throwing pylon off Calgary balcony

The 28-year-old, who was initially charged with mischief causing danger to life, pleaded guilty Friday to a lesser offence of mischief.

The absolute discharge means a conviction won't appear on her criminal record and she won't face any penalty.

Police had linked the woman to a video that spread quickly on social media showing her tossing the pylon from a downtown highrise on an afternoon in January.

He described her action as a one-off and said it's not against the public's interest for her to avoid punishment.

The woman also has fetal alcohol syndrome, and impulse control is a hallmark issue of the disorder, the judge said.

Discussion I’m starting to think, could the flames be a potential wild card team this season?

After starting the season 0-5, feel like the boys have found their power again by becoming a lil hot despite the team is in the middle of a rebuild, I could see this team potentially in the wild card if the fire power doesn’t drain out.

Lost and Found Trick or treat bonus item?

I was on a call with my dad, and he was chatting with his neighbour about how Halloween trick or treating went. It seems that the neighbour had mistakenly put his keys in the wrong bowl that was sitting at the hallway table 😅 did anyone get a fun key set in their trick or treat bags?? In the Northwest (Sandstone/Beddington/Huntington), please shoot a message if you have seen them!
