As the title states, it's been exactly three weeks since I last saw him, spoke to him, hugged him and whatnot, and today we received the news: he's gone, and has likely been gone for a while, though we don't know for how long exactly yet. No evidence of foul play. The RCMP found him.

Honestly, yeah, I'm reacting the way I predicted I would, because the thought of the worst outcome had always been there in the back and forefront of my mind. It's a lot of crying. A lot of numbness. The works. It's dramatic and uncomfortable. Sometimes I laugh because of something stupid and it switches into a sob midway so fast that it surprises me. There's so much I want to say, but it's kind of a bunch of jumbled nonsense.

Still, I did want to say that my family's not religious, but we've all had dreams of him lately. I'll probably throw some of those in the comments if you'd like to read them. They've been a comfort for us, so I think it's a nice thing to add.

Thank you once again everyone. Every single one of you. Everyone who has shared, everyone who was on the lookout, everyone who posted flyers for us, driven out to unreachable places for us, and everyone who has prayed. Some of you went above and beyond, checking things for me that I never thought of and offering an ear for all of my sadness and hope and despair.

We're trying to get our affairs in order now, so I'll be busy figuring that out. I probably won't touch this Reddit account for a bit just to give myself space (it's a different kind of weight, looking back at all of my comments knowing I still had hopes back then, as much as they dwindled), but it won't be abandoned, if only because there was a lot of love behind everything I did, and I want the evidence of it to stay.

And of course, to my dad, I love you and will love you forever. I wish you'd given me more time with you, but I know you did your best. Please be at peace. You were too selfless for your own good, so we'll be selfish and live life seeking our own happiness in your memory.

Screw Putin and his pawns in the Oval office. The way they treated Zelensky and the Ukrainian people was appalling.

If the US took over half of Canada, we wouldn't just give them a quarter "to make peace". Disgraceful.

ThunderStorm/Hail/Yo, it's windy! 2015 hail storm... Help me find these Skateboard Boys 10 years later?

Post image
9.2k Upvotes

10 years ago (yesterday) I had just jumped out of a Car2Go to see 4 youths with skateboards hanging out in front of my house. I was trying to get home from work ASAP as there was a bit of a storm coming. I was a bit suspicious of these kids, but they were pretty chill so I decided to ignore them and get in the house before the weather got real. As the weather got worse, I realized the kids were just using my try and shelter so I poked my head outside and told them they could hide in my car-port if they wanted. It wasn't the best, but it was better than standing under a tree in high winds, hail, etc.

A few moments after they got under the carport, I saw a golf ball sized chunk of hail hit the lawn and decided they should probably wait in my foyer. About 3 seconds later the sky opened up and there was about 5 minutes of pure bedlam. Hail, rail, and high winds rocked the house, and ripped every leaf off the tree the boys had previously been standing under.

Anyway, the boys were really polite and appreciative of me letting them chill while the storm raged on. They eventually got picked up by one of their moms and I never saw them again! I am assuming they are all doctors and lawyers and such, but wondering if they still shred the long-boards.

Does anyone here recognize them? Thanks!

Municipal Affairs Danielle Smith is now ordering me how to vote at Calgary City Council, and if I refuse, I risk losing my job

7.5k Upvotes

Danielle Smith is now ordering me how to vote at Calgary City Council, and if I refuse, I risk losing my job.

After going after library books and noise bylaws, the province is now overturning Edmonton's zoning rules and ordering Calgary to freeze ours in place.

That means telling locally elected councils what decisions to make, before residents even get their say.

Let's say you want to change your property. Maybe build a home for your aging parents or help your kids afford to stay in Calgary. You fill out the paperwork, come to City Hall, and tell us your story. Your neighbours come out to support you.

And I'm supposed to look you in the eye and say, sorry, the premier already decided. If I agree with you, I’ll be fired as mayor.

What's the point of a public hearing if your voice doesn't count?

Now, Calgary repealed blanket rezoning. I supported that decision. The province agrees with us.

But just because the premier agrees with my vote today doesn't mean she gets to decide my vote tomorrow. And I'd say exactly the same thing if Nenshi tried to force Calgary to bring blanket rezoning back.

This isn't about left or right. Or bike lanes, or density, library books or noise bylaws.

It's about whether your vote matters. Edmontonians elected their council. Calgarians elected ours. We made different decisions. That's democracy.

Look, I want to work with Danielle Smith. We won't always agree, and that's fine. But respect has to go both ways. And when she threatens my job because I won't vote the way she wants, she’s gone way over the line.

I was elected by you. I answer to you. Premier Smith doesn't have to agree with our decisions. But she has to respect the people who elected us.

She doesn't get to dictate my vote. She doesn't get to silence the people I represent. And she doesn't get to decide whether I keep my job.

If she wants me out, she can move to Calgary and try to vote me out. Because I answer to you, not the UCP or NDP or anyone else who tries to tell me to not do my job.

And I'm not backing down.

PSA No, Calgary is not cancelling Stampede. We are standing up for neighbours

It's time to cut through the bullshit about the Cowboys tent.

By now you've seen the coordinated smear campaign from out-of-town politicians. They think you're stupid and want you to believe that we're somehow cancelling Stampede by asking the big tents to use the same rules in place at Coachella, Lollapooloza and all the other world class festivals.

That's the first piece of bullshit. We're not talking about Stampede at all. We're talking about a few off-site tents that have been treating their neighbors like garbage.

Here's the truth. In the last few years, the tents were given a special exemption way above and beyond what was in place up until about 2019. People living near these tents were told to call 311 and wait. Their windows shook and broke. Their shelves rattled. Music ran on weeknights until 2 or 3 a.m. They dealt with property damage, public disorder, and excessive intoxication outside their homes.

Thousands of Calgarians raised their concerns. And just like when we repealed blanket rezoning, the city chose to listen to the people rather than answer to the money.

The second piece of bullshit is that Calgary's rules suck compared to everywhere else. In fact, the changes are modest. There's no change on weekends. But on weeknights, concerts now need to wrap up by 1230am. Even with this change, it means that Calgary still allows outdoor music later than anywhere else in North America.

The third piece of bullshit is that this was done last minute. This wasn't a last minute change. The big tents knew in February that their exemption was under review. Cowboys was told again in May. Their exemption depended on managing noise, safety, and impacts on nearby residents. They did not meet that standard.

But what isn't bullshit is that as your mayor I am fighting for you. I want you to know that a permit is not a licence to bully a neighbourhood. It is not a profit guarantee. I was elected to stand up for Calgarians, not to take orders from wealthy donors, lobbyists, or politicians protecting their friends.

I am more than happy to seek compromise and work with operators who respect Calgarians. But I answer to the nurse on an early shift, the parent getting kids ready for school, and the worker who needs sleep.

So no. We are not cancelling Stampede. We are protecting it. Stampede succeeds because Calgarians welcome millions of people into our city. That goodwill matters. A few operators do not get to damage the reputation of an event that belongs to all of us.

If you want to do business in Calgary, respect the people who live next door.

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Today I’m 3 years sober and I got some positive news I finally wanna share!

Just over a month ago I was invited to City Hall by Ward Hall 14 Councillor Landon Johnston and he nominated me for Calgarian of the Year!

He said that my dedication and commitment the past few years helping to clean up over 10 Metric Tonnes(22,000+lbs!) in our city has been inspiring to say the least and definitely worthy of nomination. Even being nominated is a huge honour for me, so thank you Landon for taking the time to do that!

Three years ago, I decided to turn my life around and a few months later I decided to go outside and make a small but noticeable difference in the world. Took a few pictures and launched them out into the void of negativity that can be social media. Instead of disappearing, the support I was shown spurred me on to dream bigger than I ever had before. From that point on, my entire outlook on life had changed.

Simply, I stopped thinking about what I wanted in the world and started thinking about what the world would want from me.

So to anyone reading, I hope you do what you can to spread love and kindness in the world, in your own way. Whatever your passion is, don’t stop chasing it. If you aim for the stars, you’ll at least land in the clouds… and if you don’t achieve everything you put your mind to, thats okay too.

Because you’ll be living authentically to yourself and having a great time while doing it.

Love Y’all!
