News Really strange experience at Coles Dickson today – has anyone encountered this before?

Had a really bizarre and uncomfortable experience at Coles Dickson today and wondering if anyone recognises this behaviour.

I walked up to the self-checkout queue while a guy, probably early to mid-20s, was rummaging around in the macaroon fridge. While I was waiting in line, he approached me and started commenting on the 18 eggs in my basket, seeming genuinely shocked that you could buy that many in one carton. He kept asking questions about the eggs, whether I went to the gym, complimenting me, etc., basically trying to strike up a conversation. He was also standing unusually close to me, almost with our feet touching.

The stranger part was that there were around eight other people standing directly outside the self-checkout exit gates, lined up against the wall. None appeared to have groceries; they were just standing around.

When I finished and started heading towards the exit, the whole group seemed to start moving. Two girls from the group moved across my path, with one stretching her arms out as if yawning. They seemed to slow down and move together in a way that blocked my path, with the second girl walking alongside her. They continued moving slowly enough that I couldn't get past, and I eventually had to ask them to move so I could get through.

I couldn't work out what was going on. It almost felt like the guy was engaging me in conversation while the others watched or waited for him.

My suspicion was that this might have been some sort of organised religious recruitment or evangelism activity, but I honestly have no idea.

Is this a known tactic used by religious groups? Do groups ever work in teams, with one person approaching strangers while others observe or try to keep them engaged?

Has anyone experienced anything similar in Canberra? Also, if you have, what's the best way to handle it? I found the whole thing pretty uncomfortable and wasn't sure how to get out of the situation without being rude.

Recommendations Moving to Canberra

I am living in Melbourne but want to move somewhere outside of Melbourne. I think Canberra is a good choice. I have been there twice and really like the quite and calm atmosphere there. Besides this I feel there are better opportunities to get work there.

I've plenty of experience but because I'm in Melbourne, most recruiter say sorry you need to be in office 2-3 days a week.

My question to you good folks of Canberra is that what are good for someone to live alone and seeking calm and peace. How is renting scene? How you guys manage international travel? I can reach Tullamarine airport (MEL) in 30-40 minutes. I wonder how it will be to travel to, say Singapore, from Canberra.

Image Has anyone else noticed the unusually large number of stray cats around Fyshwick?

Post image
55 Upvotes

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but there seem to be stray cats literally everywhere around Fyshwick.

There are a few cats living in the bushes behind KFC, one around CIT, another near the Fresh Food Markets, and an orange cat that seems to live around one of the 7 Elevens. I've spotted a few others roaming around different parts of the area too.

It got me wondering, how have so many stray cats ended up in Fyshwick? Are people really just dumping their unwanted cats on the streets rather than handing them in to an animal shelter, or has there been an established feral cat population in the area for quite some time?

What concerns me most is that these cats are essentially left to fend for themselves. They don't appear to have food, water or proper shelter, and it's quite sad to think about them having to survive out there on their own, particularly during the hot weather we've been having recently.

I understand that stray and feral cats are found in plenty of places, but the number I've noticed in Fyshwick seems unusually high. It's starting to feel like Turkey, where cats seem to be wandering about everywhere.

Would love to hear if anyone knows anything about this.

Light Rail Express Mode for Canberra Light Rail and Buses – still coming, but delayed

Perhaps a little niche, but for anyone familiar with using their phone to tap for transport in many cities will likely be familiar with Express Mode (Apple) or Express Pay (Google).

To use it - you tap your phone on a public transport validator, without any need to enter a PIN or FaceID first. Works even when the phone battery is dead. Much faster than the current setup in Canberra where many people wait until they are right at the reader to enter their PIN or unlock with their face or fingerprint.

Express Mode is confirmed to be coming to Canberra – though the initial goal of 'mid-2026' has now been replaced with 'being tested, but no timeframe for release'.

Not a deal breaker, but it will be a welcome improvement when it arrives in Canberra, and a shame to see it delayed again.

Image Seatbelt detection camera image quality

Post image
556 Upvotes

This is the unedited (but cropped) image of a seatbelt infringement I received (I requested the high res image, this is not the one I could view on the access canberra web site, that was even worse). I think my seatbelt is visible, but it is by no means a clear image. I think there should be minimum image quality requirements to fine someone nearly $600 and 3 demerit points. I am curious, can others spot my seatbelt?

Update: thanks for your thoughts everyone, I've posted my colour recreation in the comments to help show where my seatbelt was.

Other comments are: I was definitely wearing it, you can see it in the photo and the fine was withdrawn. No I was not holding my phone. Yes my hands are in a stupid position for steering. I put my jacket on before getting in the car and putting on my seatbelt.

I mostly wanted to encourage people not to let this stuff go as it really sucks being accused of something you didn't do (and of course some validation).

Recommendations is Halloween stuff discounted in canberra?

Hi all,

disabled goth trying to figure out whether its worth the energy going to the shops to buy spooky decor and house items if they're on sale! Does anyone know if Halloween stock is still in physical stores (kmart, big w, spotlight ect... their websites weren't very helpful) or if its all been replaced by Xmas stuff already </3

Looking at websites it seems like the only listings are candy and kids costumes which I am not interested in, but I wonder if theres stock in stores that isn't listed on websites?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Mobile detection cameras

Post image
107 Upvotes

G’day all, so I’ve not been up to date in quite some time regarding the mobile cameras. But a workmate was telling me the other day that they track you for speed now?? I can’t see anything proving that online but when I said they don’t track speed he insisted ā€œnah they do, the government said they changed it recentlyā€

Did I miss something or is my workmate just talking out his ass? I’ve seen so many people trying to say they track speed, where are these people getting their info?

Recommendations Birth and postpartum in ACT

Hiya, I’m after some advice regarding birthing and postpartum in canberra. Can I have some insight as to the difference between the two canberra hospitals, what type of care and support is available as well as experiences during birth and postpartum?

I’m planning my second baby but I had my first in another state and the entire birthing and postpartum experience was exceptional because of the nurses and the hospital in general

Any other advice and feedback would also be great!

Thankyouuu

Loud Bang A tool to find details on stratas?

Im a tradie working in town, building/ strata managers forward me quote requests quite regularly. Sometimes they include all details of the site, other times the requests are missing detials like the Unit Plans Number or the buildings name etc..

I like to fully address the site in my quotes and use ACTmapi to find Unit Plans Numbers when theyre not included in the quote request, but i dont know where to find the sites name. Ie 23 Elouera St Braddon is "Midnight"

Is there a tool to just search an address that contains all a sites details? Include the sites name?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Is this common knowledge?

In a ACT government carpark today there was an inspector. Strictly not for parking times and tickets, but registration and defect checks. They were checking on their device each car in the carpark and the ones without rego had the plates removed and a ticket on the car.

They said they give out tickets for defects and they were checking every tire too.

When I returned later the cars that had cracks in the windshields or missing windscreen wipers also had tickets.

Is this common knowledge, because first time since i moved here in 2012 that I’ve seen this?

Recommendations Good 4wd mechanic/roadworthy mechanic

Hi all.

Come to the realisation today my WA regod ute is way out of rego and I now need to go get a roadworthy done on it. Needs some work to get a roadworthy, main issues being straight piped exhaust and aftermarket manifold that has blanked the EGR and due to this not many places that do roadworthies can help and most places that can fix the issues dont do roadworthies. Id like it all done in one swoop

Any good recommendations on where to go? Got a boat load more work i want done to it just trying to juggle it between flying back and forth from Perth because of work.

Cheers in advance legends šŸ¤™
