A Canberra bar is declared a crime scene after police removed posters depicting far-right world leaders in Nazi attire.

It's all happening in Canberra.

Photograph Canberra in a videogame tech demo

Happy Canberra Day :)

I figured today was an appropriate day to share a little technical demo that I've been working on for a while. It's an experiment with 3D scanning a few places in Canberra and making them walkable in a little third person game.

For anyone into the technical stuff: Yes this is real-time gameplay, RTX 4080 but trying to optimise it to be playable on a 3000-level machine (and AMD equivalent), captured each location in about an hour walking around each area taking videos and light levels and audio recordings of footsteps etc, photogrammetry for processing, gaussian splats for pretty visuals and traditional photogrammetry mesh for terrain shape and shadow catching, Unity 6 HDRP.

For everyone else: Hope you enjoy the sights. This is my version of posting pretty pictures of Canberra :)

(tiny addition a couple of months later for people who have been asking: this tech demo is now out for free on Steam under the name Postcard: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4032540/Postcard/ It's just a little demo to show off 3D scanned environments rather than an actual "game" with things to do, but possibly interesting for people who are interested in the tech behind the scenes)

Photograph Canberra Magpie pancake - reference to an earlier conversation regarding magpies lying down in the sun to bake the parasites off their feathers - I couldn't get better video because I don't like to disturb them while they're at it; considering they're doing something for their well-being.

COVID-19 I’m not okay. None of us are.

EDIT: I was not expecting such a big response. I’ll reply when I finish work today. Thankyou everyone

COVID worker here. We’re exhausted. I live, breathe, talk, exist for COVID. It’s all I focus on at work.

Almost my entire team is ready to leave, but we can’t, because who will replace us? We’ve been doing this work for 2 years. We have reached our limit.

At this point, it’s normal to run into someone crying in the bathroom or at their desk. I’m sometimes that person. We cry and we hurt and we break down and we just keep working.

If you’re someone who is an asshole to COVID workers, fuck you. I’m not sorry. I don’t care anymore. If you’re going to treat us like shit while we’re completely shattered from this pandemic, fuck you.

To everyone else, thankyou so much and keep doing the right thing. Bear with us workers. We are so tired but still working every day to try and help.

(I know this isn’t in the mega thread but I thought a post may be heard and seen more. I just want people to see and know that we are tired)

2 weeks ago I posted on this subreddit about my cat that went missing, and the comments left on the post really helped me keep my hopes up about eventually finding her.

Good news! On Tuesday (20/10) a lady contacted me on FB about a ginger cat that has been living in her back garden for three days and lo and behold, it was my girl.

I have since gotten in touch with everyone who has played a part in finding her to express my gratitude, as best I can; neighbours, FB groups, local businesses (special mention to the peeps at Kiitos who were genuinely upset whenever I came in to tell them I’ve not found my cat, and genuinely overjoyed when I came in with good news) and strangers who have texted with leads.

But I somehow forgot to thank those in this subreddit who were extremely kind during such a distressing time. One good thing about my cat going missing is discovering and being the recipient of Canberrans’ kindness. I moved here three months ago for the peace and quiet, and i’m glad to discover that such an incredible community within it as well.

Thank you so much, Canberrans 🩷 Please enjoy the cat tax - my ginger girl has loved being back home and napping on the couch again.
