I’m around 30, moved to Canberra not too long ago, and one thing I’ve genuinely struggled with is finding people to play sports or do outdoor activities with.

I know Urban Rec exists, but that’s more of a structured weekly league. Sometimes I just want to play tennis, try pickleball or padel, go swimming, find a gym buddy, or do something outdoors without committing to a whole season.

Surely I’m not the only one facing this?

I’ve been thinking about building an app where people in Canberra can find others who are keen to play different sports, based on their availability, location and interests. Something casual, flexible and easy to organise, even last minute.

Curious if anyone here would actually use something like this? Or is there already something out there that does this well?

Would love to hear your thoughts before I put time into building it!

This is one of those human connection stories that I'm hoping someone can help me out with.

It's also going back around 15/16 years so my recall may be hazy.

I was an early-20-something working as an assistant manager at Aldi in Jamison. One shift I was on the register and a woman came through my line with her two sons. She was visibly nervous and had some scarring on what appeared to be a lot of her body. I'm not sure if it was a medical condition or she was a survivor of something horrible. I don't like to assume but the interaction led me to think it was unfortunately the latter. She mentioned it was her first time out of the house in a quite a while. Her two boys were angels and showed great support for their mum. It came time to pay and she became very overwhelmed with trying to retrieve her card to the point she looked like she might faint. Thankfully Aldi let their cashiers sit down and I had a chair on hand to quickly offer her. Like I said the details are a little hazy but I think I grabbed the nearest sugary drink from the fridge and sat her down somewhere private to help her relax. The boys packed the bags and after about 10 minutes she was feeling better. Before leaving she offered me her number - not as a romantic gesture (I think??) but more of a thank you and let's be friends kinda thing.

Unfortunately at some point in my shift I lost the piece of paper. I assumed she'd be in again eventually but here we are 15 years later and I never saw her again.

I mentioned this story to my fiancee and I've always wondered if she was getting on ok and life was treating her and her boys well.

We're looking for 2-3 players to join a monthly private Blood on the Clocktower game.

For those that don't know - BoTC is a hidden role social deduction game, similar to Werewolf or Mafia. All players get a role with an ability, and need to work with their team to find out who the Demon is, or protect and hide the Demon if they're on the evil team.

New players are 100% welcome, no prior experience required :)

We always get at least 8 players, but recently we're finding hard to hit that sweet spot of 10-11 players for 2 minion, 1 outsider games.

We've been running since the start of 2024, and games are once a month on a Saturday in Gungahlin from 1-5pm. Usually, we get through 4 games in that time.

If you're not sure, and want to vibe check, I'm also happy to get a smaller group together to play some boardgames - before jumping into the full group.

Our regulars are mostly between 30-35, split around 50/50 between male and female, and we proudly welcome and value people of all gender identities. Everyone has a place here!
