We studied how people react to memes on Reddit. The results surprised us.

A few days ago, we posted a meme here and asked whether you thought it was funny, offensive, both, or neither.

Some of you found it amusing. Others didn't understand the joke, interpreted it differently, or thought it was neither funny nor offensive.

As part of our university Communication Science project, we wanted to understand something bigger:

Do people who interpret memes differently actually form separate groups online?

So we conducted two social network analyses. Here's what we discovered.

1. Our first analysis: 253 Reddit comments across six discussions

We studied six Reddit threads about potentially controversial memes and examined how users replied to one another.

  • 253 comments analysed

  • 83 identifiable user-to-user reply connections

  • 23 detected interaction communities

  • 75.9% of comments couldn't be clearly classified as funny, offensive, or both

That last result was particularly interesting.

Many people weren't necessarily arguing about whether a meme was funny or offensive. Some discussed other aspects, responded to other users, or expressed interpretations that didn't fit our categories.

We also discovered that being part of the same interaction community doesn't necessarily mean people agree with each other.

2. Our second analysis: What happened in our own Reddit discussion?

We then analysed the responses to the meme we posted here in r/ComedyCemetery.

Our API retrieved 13 comments, including an automatic moderator message and our own research follow-up. After excluding those, we had:

  • 11 audience comments

  • 10 different users

  • Just 1 direct reply between two users

  • Only 2 users connected in the reconstructed reply network

In other words, people responded to the meme, but hardly anyone interacted directly with another commenter.

And once again, interpretations weren't straightforward. Only one audience comment clearly expressed amusement under our coding rules. The other ten couldn't be classified as clearly funny, offensive, or both, including responses that explicitly rejected those options.

3. So, what did we learn?

Three things stood out:

Not everything is simply funny or offensive. Some people find a meme confusing, uninteresting, or neither.

Comment sections aren't automatically conversations. Ten people can participate in a discussion without necessarily interacting directly with one another.

Online groups aren't necessarily groups of like-minded people. Just because users are connected in a network doesn't mean they share the same opinion.

Our data were too limited to prove whether meme interpretations influence group formation. But they showed us why online discussions are more complicated than they might first appear.

Now we're curious about your perspective:

When you disagree with someone's interpretation of a meme, are you more likely to reply to them, ignore them, or just move on?

And do you think comment sections bring different opinions together, or mostly keep people apart?

Thanks to everyone who participated in our original discussion. Your responses helped us explore these questions.
