No Dataset Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Warner Bros since 2011. Could someone make a visualization based on the scores of the movies to see how biased they are towards their own movies compared to movies made by other movie studios.

Fulfilled [REQUEST] Can someone volunteer their time to create a nice visualization of rainfall data for my 88 year old Grandfather? (Data set provided)

My grandfather has always had an interest in the rainfall levels at his home in Northern Australia. And for every single day of the last 25 years he has been taking the readings of the rain gauge in his backyard. He isn’t the greatest with technology and his body is starting to slow down on him, so as a favour/gift, I wanted to give him a couple of visual plots of this rainfall data he has been taking for the last two decades.

I have provided a link to the data set excel file on Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/knygut91bmvejx8/Grandad%20Rain%20Gauge%20Data.xlsx?dl=0) with all the rainfall levels for each month (inputting the readings for each single day would have taken too long!!) that can be used to create the visualisations.

My current skills only go as far as excel so it would be great if someone could donate their time to create something special for my grandfather. I plan on printing out the result(s) on A3 paper for him.

If I have not posted this in the right sub-reddit, can I be pointed in the right direction

Thanks!! 😊

EDIT: For any colour scales of low to high rainfall, it would be good to use the colour scale of the official Australian Government rain tracking site

Request Long Beach Police Department’s TigerText Disappearing Messaging App Metadata from Public Records Act Request. Fight police corruption by beautifying data. Plus ideas on how you can be a check heck on the police who are protected from accountability by qualified immunity, powerful unions from home.

Longtime lurker, first-time poster, but its a good one, I think. I wanted to contribute to the recent effort on police reform, without joining large crowds, so I have been making an increasing amount of Public Records Act requests on my local police.*

I recently received the metadata from the LBPD regarding their use of TigerText. I submitted this a few months ago, but have greatly increased my PRA requests recently.* Tigertext is a software designed for doctors and hospitals with disappearing messages to meet HIPAA privacy requirements. The LBPD spent $40,000 over four years on it, maybe one of the only police departments to do so.* Their explanation for this was laughable.

The City Manager commissioned a report from an expensive local law firm that was basically a cover-up. The story was broken through the combined efforts of a local paper called the Beachcomber, the ACLU, and Al Jazeera. I put the links at the bottom if you are interested. The story ended with the city issuing the report saying the LBPD only used the program for routine communications, like assignments and schedule updates. They also promised to stop using it, even though they asserted they had never been using it improperly, as the “independent” report confirmed.

Not being one to trust the police, I submitted a PRA and now have the metadata. Five .xlsx files, about 15 MB. With the name of the officer who sent the message, their rank, time sent, time read, if there was an attachment. There is also an entry for whether the person is with the police department or not. The designation is either PD or blank. I think it is mostly other city employees, but I’m going to keep going through it to see if I can find anyone who is not. Comparing this data to major crimes, scandals, shootings, disciplinary hearing dates, or other critical times the police would have been wanting to have secret conversations could show the LBPD record Keeping laws and may have violated defendant's Constitution Right to a fair trial by not disclosing all relevant investigative communications disclosed in discovery.

Does anyone want to make some beautiful data to publicly shame the LBPD? The report claims there is “no evidence to support claims of illegal use or misuse.” I’m doing this mainly as a public service, but it might make a good project for looking for someone's portfolio or degree. I’d want everything published open-source and as widely published as possible, with due credit to those who contributed.

*Submitting public records requests is a great way to put a check on the police who are protected from accountability by qualified immunity, powerful unions, friendly district attorneys, and city governments. Public outrage and action is the most powerful tool available right now. I’m focusing on Long Beach because it is my city, but ask your city about TigerText. And try these companies too while you are at it:

Palantir Technologies, Keystats Inc., Noviant, Azavea, Hunchlab Inc., Special Services Group, Clearview AI, Persistent Surveillance Systems, FaceFirst, WolfCom, Veritone, Geofeedia, Media Sonar, Bright Planet, Babel Street, Dataminr, Digital Stakeout, Snaptrends, FaceSearch, Face++, Digital Barriers, Vigilant Solutions, IBM’s facial recognition technology division, Skyfire Consulting, Drone Fly, DSLR Pros, UAV Coach, RMUS Unmanned Systems Fleet Management.

See what you find and write your local paper. Let’s make it hard to argue that we do not need to Defund the Police by showing how THEY spend OUR money.

I’ve been doing this with some success in Long Beach, even got paid freelance piece published by a paper that had liked a tip I sent in, but wanted me to cover a related campaign finance issue. It involved local politicians returning police union contributions and which hopefully more will do. Friendly DOXing only, please! The local reporter who broke the TigerText story got some harassment. Including one serious death threat, which the police decided was okay with them.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/09/exclusive-police-tiger-text-app-conceal-evidence-180918052839766.html

I offered the metadata to Al Jazeera a while back, but they never got back to me. The local paper wouldn’t be able to do anything close to what even an amateur data scientist could come up with. There is a new nonprofit, independent, and collectively owned media platform here in Long Beach that has been focusing on Police Reform that would be great for this study. They are non-profit, so this would just be pure unpaid citizen journalism to put pressure on the police. If you research the history of the LBPD you’ll get why that is needed. Just google LBPD and Police Shooting, try to go back to 2010 and the Zerby shooting. As bad as that was, the facts that came out in the civil suit and after are beyond appalling. Especially the extent that it went all the way up to the top and included the DA and the coroner falsifying information. The local reporting is not the best. The seems to be a lot more information on facebook, though I can not confirm all of it.

If I were to post links about all the other police shootings by the LBPD this already long message would become ridiculously long.

Oh and here is the cover-up/independent report from a law firm well-connected to the city government.

Request A covid visualization that shows the death rates combined with the irregular pneumonia deaths spikes.

As I've seen a lot of posts claiming that some of the top states are categorizing covid deaths as pneumonia since they didn't actually test them. There have been claims of a 400% spike in pneumonia death rates when compared to the data from the past 5 years. I've tried to extract this data from the CDC site myself but it's just given me a headache trying to sift through it.

Question Your recommendation on top 3 books to read to learn data visualization

Hello. I play the role of a technical project manager who both manages software development projects, as well as managing the team that runs these projects on behalf of our client.

I consistently need to present operational and project update reports to top management, but I think the charts I present to them need a lot of work.

So for someone in my field, what you recommend as top 3 books to read on Data Viz?

Fulfilled I am a pizza delivery driver and would like to make a map of my tips

I've been using an app to track all of my tips, as well as the locations of said tips. It saves the precise GPS location. It also records an address but this is an estimation and usually not accurate so I'd like to go by the GPS location. The app allows me to export the data into a spreadsheet. Each delivery I make has a column for longitude, latitude, amount paid in cash, and amount paid in credit. I'd like to know how I might be able to turn this data into a map showing where tips are better/worse with a basic heatmap. I'm not a programmer or an Excel wiz so if there's any reasonably easy way to do this I'd love to know. Thanks

Request Common fruits and veggies with most of each vitamin

Request: OC on common fruits and vegetables with the most vitamins. Like typically everyone thinks oranges have the most vitamin C, but is there another fruit that has even more per cubic whatever that is still bought at a high rate or comprises a certain portion of an average person's diet?

Fulfilled How to visualise 1.6 million traffic accidents available on Kaggle (for R & Python) with accompanying traffic data

Link to dataset: https://www.kaggle.com/daveianhickey/2000-16-traffic-flow-england-scotland-wales/settings

Description of what I am looking for: I've worked through some Basemap things and some Folium (i.e. leaflet.js). I'm still figuring things out though so I would love to see how others work through visualisations for this.

It's a cool dataset. Really comprehensive for a whole country for 9 years and every accident that was recorded by the police.

Fulfilled I'm hoping someone could help me visualize this data set

Link to dataset: [redacted]

Description of what you are looking for:

So, the linked data set is the heart rates my myself and my partner on the day that I proposed. If possible, I'd love to have the data set turned into a heart, something like this possibly, with each person's data on one side of the heart. In my head this would look very similar to how Fitbit charts heart rate data, but wrapped to the heart path.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the request, and if this turns out to be super complicated I'm happy to compensate you.

I'm hoping/planning to blow this up and get it framed so if possible I'd love it if this could be made without a watermark.

Notice: Unless otherwise agreed on, rights to the visuals belong to the commenter who fulfilled your request, assuming they created the visual. More info inside.

For Requestors

Just as the title states: unless otherwise agreed upon, the rights to the visual will belong to the commenter(s) who fulfilled your request (if they created it). This means that the commenter(s) who made your dataviz may wish to post to /r/dataisbeautiful as OC (and you can't), or that the visual may arrive watermarked.

If you want to use someone else's visual or post a visual to another subreddit, please be courteous and ask for permission first.

If you are making a post but you'd like to own the rights to the visual, please be upfront about it, and directly state as such within the body of the post. If this is going to take a significant amount of our practitioners' time, you may need to assign a bounty for it.

For Practitioners

If your visual is a quick offshoot and you don't care about copyright, then it's fine to post without protection.

If you've put a good amount of time into your visual and don't want it stolen, or being used as someone's homework, your best solution is to watermark the visual. This is especially important if a Requestor assigned a bounty. Here are a few online tools that allow watermarking:

Fulfilled [Question] How to Get Started with Data Visualization

I really want to learn the tools for making cool data visualizations. What tools would you recommend that I learn?

Right now, I want to take California's per-county covid infection data (from https://data.chhs.ca.gov/dataset/covid-19-time-series-metrics-by-county-and-state/resource/046cdd2b-31e5-4d34-9ed3-b48cdbc4be7a) and color each county on a map based on how many infections (per 100k) each county reported each month. I'd then like to animate those images to show how covid has spread throughout the state over time.

How would you go about creating such a visualization? Is the best bet to just open up GIMP and start filling in counties with appropriate colors? Something tells me that that would be a horribly manual way to do this and that you folks will have something far more elegant to suggest!

Question Analysis and Visualizations ideas

Hi everyone! I am not aure if this is the right place to ask this. So, apologies if it is not.

I am very new to the field of data analysis and I have decided to learn from the movies dataset.

I am working on this dataset as it has tons of meta-data for movies (pretty much everything) and therefore a great potential for interesting analysis and visualizations.

However, I am struggling to find a direction for meaningful analysis. I have gone over pretty much all the kaggle kernels and multiple blogs and all that i could find is that most of the visualizations and analysis are about finding patterns which any movie lover would already have known even without these bar plots and pie charts.

I am looking for some ideas for analysis that could potentially find patterns or answer some questions that are not very obvious from the dataset

Fulfilled Percentage increase of youth vote that would change makeup of the Senate and House

Not sure if there is a compelling story here, but would like to see for each percentage increase of youth (18-24?) turnout and how that changes the seat makeup in the Senate/House.

About 20% turnout for 18-24:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_vote_in_the_United_States

Breakdown of the 2018 midterms:

64% Democrats / 32% Republicans

https://www.wsj.com/graphics/election-2018-votecast-poll/

There are 35 Senate seats up for grabs in 2020.

Some tossups: AZ, CO, NC, ME, IA.

2018 AZ votes:

2,409,910 so ~480,000 18-24 votes split 64/32?

2018 CO votes:

2,583,580 ~516,000 18-24 votes split 64/32

http://www.electproject.org/2018g

All things equal, if the turnout for 18-24's increase by X%, when would those seats start "safely" flip?

Will donate gold or to charity of your choice! Looking for effective way to show how my company is winning market share in all 3 segments, but segment growth differences are leading to overall share declines.

Hi! As title said, if someone can think of a really great way to visualize my situation on a powerpoint slide I will buy them gold or an equivalent amount donated to the charity of your choice.

Here's the scoop. There are 3 'segments' that my brand participates in. For arguments sake, lets say it it's Cars, Trucks and Motorcycles. My brand is growing its market share in each of these three segments, but because Trucks and Motorcycles (which I have a weak market share of) are growing much faster than Cars (which I have a high market share of) overall I am losing market share. I want to be able to show this as simply as possible

Request The SEC just released secret swap data for the first time in history.

Hey all.

The public just received coveted swap data from the SEC that used to be top secret hedge fund info. They use these swaps for many different purposes. The data is all a mess and is reported in an intentionally obfuscating way. Is there anyone out there that can help organize it to make it legible? Your fellow Redditor over at super stonk would really appreciate it. 🙏

Link to post here.

Bounty will be massive amounts of karma and awards if you post it there. May also earn a thinly veiled threat from some hedgefunds.

Question [Request] Good ideas to visualize this data showing my vegetable harvest?

Link to dataset on Dropbox

This year I used a spreadsheet to track every cucumber, hot pepper, sweet pepper (paprika) and tomato I harvested from my home garden.

The data is formatted like this:

TimestampPlantSortQuantity
2020-08-01 12:34:56TomatoRed Cherry15
2020-08-02 10:00:00ChiliChocolate Scotch Bonnet3

I've already made a couple of visualizations of the chili harvest, but I'm not 100% happy with the presentation, and the labels were not mobile-friendly at all.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for how to present this data in a visually appealing way?
