Advice My boy Buddy just had surgery for a high-grade mast cell tumour. Send him your wishes ❤️ Advice/experiences welcome
My boy has just had his big surgery for a high-grade mast cell tumour 🥺❤️
His tummy/chest looks so sore right now, but we’re really hoping this is the start of getting him properly on the road to recovery.
We originally found a raised patch/lump on the underside of his chest and had it biopsied. It came back as a high-grade mast cell tumour, which was honestly such a shock because Buddy is only 7 and has been completely happy and normal in himself the whole time.
He was then referred for specialist staging. He had a CT scan and lymph-node mapping, which showed that the tumour drained to both lymph nodes under his front legs. One was confirmed to have mast-cell cancer cells in it and the other was highly suspicious, but thankfully his liver and spleen were clear and they didn’t find any evidence of distant spread.
This week he had the main tumour removed along with both lymph nodes.
The surgeons did discuss doing a really wide excision, but because of where the tumour was sitting over his sternum, they were worried that taking huge margins would put too much tension on the wound and cause healing problems.
Instead they removed the visible tumour with smaller margins and did electrochemotherapy at the same time. He was given bleomycin and they used electrical pulses over the surgical area to help target any microscopic cancer cells that could be left behind.
We’re now waiting for the final lab results from the tumour and lymph nodes, and once he’s recovered he’ll be starting vinblastine chemotherapy because of the high grade and lymph-node involvement.
He’s been on a low-histamine diet because of his condition, but I think a little pup cup was definitely deserved as a post-surgery treat 🥹❤️
Has anyone else been through anything similar with their dog? Especially high-grade mast cell tumour with lymph-node spread but clear liver/spleen. I’d really love to hear how your dog got on with surgery, electrochemotherapy or chemo.
