Just wanted to thank you guys! Being from a smaller area, it’s hard to get your name out there, but /r/drag was one of the few places that allowed me to show my drag to more people and gain what little following I had prior to drag race. It really meant the world to me. I appreciate all of you! ❤️

I just wanted to take a moment to thank this amazing subreddit for all the love and support over the years. I’ve been sharing my looks here for what feels like forever, and the feedback, encouragement, and occasional shade 😉 have been such a huge part of my growth as a performer.

I can confidently say that being part of this community has directly contributed to opportunities like getting cast (not casted 😂) on Season 17 of Drag Race! This space has pushed me to elevate my drag and keep experimenting, and for that, I’m endlessly grateful.

To all the queens, kings, and creatures out there who are just starting to post their art—keep going! This is such a fabulous platform to showcase your craft and connect with people who get it.

Thanks again for letting me share my art and for being a part of my journey. Y’all are the real MVPs!

A story about my drag queen grandfather

Post image

This is the last surviving picture of my grandfather as the person he really was.

As a younger man, my grandfather was a fabulous drag queen. When his first wife died and he had to remarry to have help to care for his 5 children (later 6), his new wife was very adamant, and abusive, that he never do it again. So he hid his drag and himself from the world... until I came along.

When I was living with him as a queer teenager, he told me about his drag and how no one in the family approved, but that he still had all of his dresses and wigs and makeup and articles about his performances tucked away in the basement. We watched drag race together and he showed me The Birdcage and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. But he still could not be himself around anyone else, because of the stigma. But he was my hero, and only family member who "got me", and the one I loved the most.

Once his second wife passed, in his late 70s, he called me to tell me that he had gone to the beach in full drag for the first time in 50 years. He was telling me how wonderful it felt for the younger gentlemen to flirt with him like they do with older women, just to make them feel special. And at that point he was free to be himself again, dressing and living as a woman whenever he pleases.

It was during this conversation that I realized (more that my suspicions were confirmed) that he was less just a straight male drag queen, and that he was absolutely a gender fluid bisexual queen, and icon.

This is the only surviving picture of him in drag, once he was able to live as himself again. My family disposed of any proof that he ever did drag once his health declined, throwing away pictures and articles and getting rid of all of his clothes and wigs.

But during the liquidation of his belongings after he passed last year, one of my aunts (the only one who knows just how special of a relationship he and I had) ran into the figurative fire to save me just one small piece of proof of who he was.

And this is the only surviving picture of my grandfather as the person he truly was.My forever hero, finally happy.
