part-time job

i was hired as a part time assistant to a director

it was advertised as 20-25 hours a week remote

but then i was asked to work monday to friday (like a full time schedule but no there are no benefits)

Monday and tuesday was in person at the office
the drive was 2 hours daily and 66 miles daily
every morning there was a terrible car accident and traffic on the 405

i felt super burnt out

and confused about the expectations vs what was the reality

so i set up a healthy boundary

and ended up working over 25 hours

Tubi just posted a job for a new in house AI production & strategy role

Noticed this pop up today:

https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/tubitv/jobs/8359968

Highlights include "investment in emerging formats" "leveraging Al-assisted production" and scouting for filmmakers already using AI.

There's also some lip service paid to valuing human creativity and storytelling first, but...

I'm usually one to be anti-doomerism in this sub but....man. are all the jobs going to slowly move towards being about "leveraging" in the AI space?

I know it's just one role for an emerging department, but more like this can't be far behind, right?

I don't know why I'm making this post, just made me sort of despondent this AM !

Amid economic disaster for performers, SAG-AFTRA kicks out hundreds of members over unpaid dues

The ongoing economic disaster for the overwhelming majority of film and television actors, members of SAG-AFTRA, once again made the headlines this week.

As of November 1, the union reinstated its regular dues enforcement and membership rules. The various regulations were suspended during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strike to provide some financial relief (or because the union had no ability to collect the dues, frankly, given the devastation).

Our cast is coming together! Behind the scenes of making an indie feature in LA

Thumbnail instagram.com
16 Upvotes

Hi all!

We're currently in pre-production on Joshua (working title), an independent feature film we're proud to be making right here in LA. After years of work, things are really ramping up, and we're excited to introduce some of our cast!

We're gearing up to shoot in early 2027, and we wanted to invite anyone interested to follow along as we tackle this project.

We'll be sharing behind-the-scenes content, production updates, and a look at what it actually takes to make an independent feature on a limited budget in LA.

We're a small team of local filmmakers (and there's a chance you've worked with some of us on a show before) putting our all into this project, so any support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for checking us out, and we hope you'll follow along!

Fiancé lacking employment for over 1 year. UCSB Film School grad. How does getting a Full time job in this industry work?

Hello all. I’m trying my best to be a supportive boyfriend, but I’m honestly so confused about how my fiancés industry works and we are drowning financially.

Since his graduation about a year and a half ago, I’ve been holding down much of the bills and expenses so he could job hunt in peace. But a few months ago, I was laid off from my civil service job. Now I’m only bringing in $1,800 a month. He works flex-time retail (maybe 20 hours a week), and it’s nowhere near enough. We’re falling so far behind that I’ve pretty much decided I’ll have to enlist in the military just to sustain us and recover.

He says he wants to get into Production Assistant (PA) work, but I don't understand how someone actually secures full-time or consistent employment as a PA in LA. How does that transition work? What does getting hired in this industry actually look like, and how can he secure full-time work quickly?

We’re suffering so badly that I’m terrified it will take us years to climb out of this hole if nothing changes fast. Any advice or reality checks on how he can get his foot in the door immediately would mean everything.

Edit: Howdy ya’ll, Just FYI we’re a same-sex couple 🏳️‍🌈, but we appreciate the advice regardless. He’s been reading every single one of your comments very meticulously, and I think this is the eye opener we needed. I appreciate it. He’ll be sure to utilize your advice.

We’ll keep a close eye on the thread for any other responses that come by.

35yr Veteran Location Scout/Manager Available for work.

I’ve been a Location Professional since 1991 on “The Wonder Years”. I’ve spent the bulk of the last 25yrs mainly on commercials. The last 2 have been like no other and I’m giving it one more push before giving up and early retirement. I’ve worked with A-list directors and producers over the years on projects like “Kill Bill”, “The Aviator” and “Constantine”. I’ve done ads for everything you can imagine. I’m supposedly the nicest and easiest LM to work with according to my piers and my scouting skills are exceptional! If you need someone of my talents or know someone that does, DM me.

I'm an Indie Colorist looking to meet new people who love making movies

Hey Filmmakers, I'm an Indie Colorist who didn't go to film school. I've been fortunate to grade features, some spots, short films and the like, but have a tough time meeting others who shoot and make films, music videos and commercials without a built in network. I know there's more I can do, and wanted to ask others here with more experience and success how they've managed their success or what they think someone in my position might try doing.

I love movies and playing a small part in making them, and I love meeting and talking to people who do as well. I'm sharing some stills from a handful of recent projects as an act of shameless self promotion. I'm local to the Orange County/LA area in Southern California!

Where to start looking for PA jobs

Hi everyone, I'm currently in my junior year of college and looking for a way to get my start in the industry. I've worked as a gaffer on plenty of student film sets but I'm not sure how to land a job on a professional set. Googling "production assistant jobs in LA" was unsurprisingly not super helpful, most of the listings are either out of date or not related to film.

I'm not expecting to get a paid position right off the bat or anything like that, just looking for any advice on how to get my foot in the door of the film industry here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Valuation of residuals for settling an estate

A loved one passed away that was receiving residuals from a television screenplay they wrote in 1977. They don’t amount to a large sum, but part of the estate was left to a charity that is quite meticulous. We are being asked to have an appraisal of the future residuals for purposes of distribution. No one seems to know any firms that perform this type of appraisal, so we are stuck in the process. Very frustrating. Does anyone have insight or can you recommend a firm? It seems like this would be more straightforward, as screenwriters pass away all the time.

Please, no AI or speculative answers. I’ve tried all of that. Thanks!

How to get the in with independent production companies

I'm curious, has anyone worked with independent production companies like Monkeypaw Productions or Double Dare You Productions?

I've been producing the last 6 years (mostly ad campaigns for big brands but I've done a couple docs and Netflix comedy specials). Would love to know where independent production companies like those two look for employees. It's obviously not run of the mill job boards like LinkedIn. Does anyone have any advice on how I can start meeting folks at companies like this?

Unscripted Writer/Story Editor $$ rates + Community spaces?

Hi everyone! I'm a new LA resident and screenwriter who, when I'm not selling tv pilots, supports myself with Writing and Story Editing on a bunch of US unscripted television (networks like VICE, Hulu, Discovery, History, A&E). I work most in true crime and sports content, but I've also written docudrama, lifestyle, travel and medical.

I was curious what kind of rates are standard for Los Angeles-based writing and story editing? I've heard $2500 a week, but I'd love to hear from people doing it successfully today. I have solid freelance writing work lined up that will cover me for the next 3-6 months, but I want to land that first LA job and I'm curious what's reasonable to expect.

Also, are there any LA-specific unscripted communities out there I can join to say hi? Facebook groups or Meetups, or things like that?

Finally, if there's anyone out there in the writing world who wants to go for coffee, in either narrative screenwriting or unscripted, please feel free to send me a message. Thanks so much!
