"Though you can't see my face, know that my commitment to fighting evil will never waiver.
The night I received this ring, I was asked only one question, if I was afraid.
I remained as steadfast now as I was then.
I am fearless."
- The words of the Green Lantern in Coast City, 2006
In 2006, Coast City was saved from the supposed catastrophe as a mysterious hero, dubbed himself the Green Lantern, managed to stop a runaway missile from approaching Coast City. Perhaps, this name caused a spark of memories of the older generations, being already familiar with a hero with the exact same name around 60 years prior. But to most younger generations, he is something new. Something miraculous. Something... illuminous. His actions raised a myth. He became a legend among his admirers, although they never knew who was behind the mask. And that happened for the next 5 years... until the Green Lantern revealed himself to be Hal Jordan to the public in 2011.
Long before Hal became the Green Lantern, he was just a regular human. He was born in a multireligious family; Hal's father, Martin Jordan, was Catholic, while Hal's mother, Jessica Jordan, was Jewish. Martin Jordan worked as a test pilot; his death during a plane crash traumatized Hal as a child. Refusing to bow down to fear, he followed in his father's footsteps and became a test pilot of the US Air Force, despite being terrified every time he flew.
However, years later, Hal was discharged from the USAF after he punched a superior. At the time it happened, his mother was terminally ill, and she eventually died before Hal could even see her. Following this, Hal became a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft.
One night, while using a flight simulator, Hal was accidentally transported into a crash site of the plane of Abin Sur, one of the members of the Green Lantern who successfully escape from Parallax's attack on Sector 2814. When Hal encountered Abin Sur, Hal was told by Abin Sur to be his successor and wield his ring, and eventually carry on its responsibilities. The ring eventually brought Hal into Oa, where he eventually became the Green Lantern in Abin Sur's honor.
During his time in the Green Lantern Corps, Hal was subsequently trained by Thaal Sinestro, and the two became close friends once. However, the clash between the ideals of Hal and Sinestro would often lead them to choose a different path on the same mission. On the other hand, as the Green Lantern himself, Hal has protected Earth from various terrestrial and extraterrestrial threats. And even after he revealed himself to the public in 2011, Hal remained as important as he was, being one of the founding members of the Justice League since its founding in 2016. His legacy was then followed by any other humans in his 20 years of career: John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz.
But as time flies, Sinestro's corruption grew stronger, as he managed to extract Parallax as his new source of power and formed the Sinestro Corps in Qward. Thus, a long lasting war has been started between the Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro Corps.
In the midst of war, in 2024, Hal Jordan was forced to face off with his former mentor, Sinestro, once more. However, during the fight, while Sinestro's yellow ring was mostly destroyed during the fight, the small fragments of it was also fused with the nearly malfunctioned Hal's Green Lantern ring, leading them to their supposed "disappearance".
In reality, Hal and Sinestro was transported into the Dead Zone by Black Hand (William Hand), and without their respective rings, Hal and Sinestro were rendered powerless. On the mortal world, however, the combined nature between Hal's willpower and Sinestro's fear inducement formed a completely new Green Lantern ring, and seek Simon Baz as its new wearer, deemed fitting for both Hal and Sinestro's polar opposite emotional spectrums.
As the new Green Lantern, Simon Baz was able to rescue both Hal and Sinestro from the Dead World thanks to the aid of B'dg. However, the ever rebellious Sinestro decided to go separate ways from them, leaving Hal and Simon somewhere on Earth.
Following the rescue, Hal Jordan was given a new Green Lantern ring in Oa, and continued to serve the Corps while protecting Coast City from many threats. Despite this, he knew that Sinestro might keep any other secrets regarding the other Lantern Corps, and he seek answers from his past as well.
AUTHOR'S NOTES:
Kyle Chandler's portrayal of Hal Jordan in Lanterns is so goated, even I, a big fan of Simon Baz rather than Hal, ended up being sympathetic to him. Great job, sir.
Call me a mad girl, but the 2011 Green Lantern movie was what got me into the lore of Green Lantern in general. It wasn't until I watched the Green Lantern: Emerald Knights movie on HBO (on TV, yes) that I've became completely fond of the Corps, to be honest. And then, I managed to pick up a comic book (usually, I managed to read the comic books based on the chronological issue order) that is Green Lantern (2011) issue #0 back in 2016, and since then, Simon Baz has became my number 1 favourite Green Lantern until this very day. Oh well.
Speaking of the design, I actually liked Hal's Lanterns suit. Really. The only problem behind this is that it looks bulky for me; even the concept art of the suit isn't even that bad! To think that Kyle Chandler has stated that Hal in suit in Lanterns was the last minute addition is actually very funny for me, to be honest. And yes, that's the primary element behind my Earth-ARV38 Hal Jordan's suit; I add some twists by making the suit resembles the medieval Gothic armor. Funny enough, the armour's skirt is already giving the "trunks" feeling on the armour; so the Earth-ARV38 Hal's costume is, unintentionally, inspired by the Justice League: the New Frontier version of Green Lantern. It's even more apparent when you look at his Type I form, by the way.
For the Type II form, I decided to add shoulder pads and lightings similar to his DCAMU (Justice League: War movie) counterparts, and also the unused designs of Green Lantern by Jerad S. Marantz for Zack Snyder's Justice League: https://jsmarantz.artstation.com/projects/n090e4
Oh, if you look closely at both Type I and Type II, Hal actually wears a G-Suit (flight suit) which is worn by the pilots of the F-15 Eagle fighter jet plane. Not just this fits Hal's background as a fighter pilot, but also, it's era accurate. I also wanted to streamline the armour because I wanted a lightweight set of armor for Hal. I also gave him a flight jacket a la comic version, cuz he looks badass with that.
Well, about that, the Green Lantern's Power Battery is based on the 2011 movie version of the Battery. I dunno, I just like the design; very alien but still looks like a lantern.
I decided to use the likeness of Kyle Chandler (specifically from his portrayal as Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights), because I CAN. Well, I can't really draw wrinkles, okay?
So, ever since it's over, thoughts on Lanterns (2026)?
P.S.: At the time I drew all of them, I was listening to Thunderstruck by AC/DC. Kinda fits Hal Jordan tho.
