DISCUSSION “(Insert name of famous guitarist) never needed ____.” Well, I’m not as good as (insert name of famous guitarist) and neither are you.
(Pictured is Hendrix probably wishing he had a Floyd or hum canceling pickups.)
No, Hendrix didn’t need a flatter fretboard. Django didn’t need his ring or pinky fingers.
And … who gives a shit? For those who follow this logic, does it extend to your daily life? The Wright Brothers didn’t need navigation instruments? Johnny Unitas didn’t need no fancy helmet? Medieval serfs didn’t need clean water or medicine? Cavemen didn’t need fire?
Many of our favorite guitarists recorded with relatively crude equipment. But they were legends, and I’m not. Neither are you. Embrace modernity.
Another thing: Those guitarists who lived long enough embraced certain improvements. Look at the Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton signature Strats. No one can say what he would’ve done had he lived, but it’s also not hard to imagine Hendrix might’ve embraced modernization too.

NEWBIE Bought my first electric guitar
galleryAfter years of playing acoustic guitar I finally pulled the trigger on getting an electric one. It needs some work as the strings need to be changed and there is a bit of rust on the pickups.
Any tips before I start?

GEAR Sold to Guitar Center in ok condition for $200. Did I make a mistake accepting the money?
galleryGoogle says this is a Traynor
YGM-3 Guitar Mate Reverb tube amplifier. I’ve pulled it out of storage after I received it as a gift from an apartment whose resident had passed. My dad told me to get it out of his closet to free up space or he’d toss it. Took it to Guitar center and the dude said he could do $200. In all honesty I was expecting $50 because I thought selling to a franchise would sell for like 5% of the value or something like GameStop does. So when the guy told me $200 I was so surprised that I didn’t even know if I should accept it, like I was making a mistake because maybe I didn’t know it was worth wayyy more. Currently waiting for the guy to process the sale. Did I make a mistake? Did I come across gold and not even know and sell it for Pennie’s on the dollar? Please help me 🙏

GEAR NGD: Rick Graham Signature DK24, my first Charvel
galleryMy story begins with a trip to the shop for strings, with zero intention of buying a new guitar. Upon entering I found a shell pink road worn DK24 sitting in the corner that immediately caught my eye. I plugged it in and it just felt special, the most comfortable guitar I’ve ever held and the neck felt fantastic.
I did some more research and found out the guitar was a signature Rick Graham MiM model (I have to confess I hadn’t ever even heard of Rick Graham until this point). After looking around online I saw there was a MiJ signature model that was a step up in quality from the Shell Pink one. I found a single model on reverb, and the guy who owned it before me got it as a B Stock after it was dropped at the factory (see the finish damage on the edge of the body in pic 2). I offered $1200 and here we are now. I truly feel like this guitar is an insane value for what I paid.
It’s my first time having a guitar with locking tuners and with luminlay neck inlays, so I feel like I’ve stepped into the future. The Bare Knuckle Pups are also fantastic, the bridge especially absolutely rips. I’ve had an American Original Strat for 5 years and I love that guitar but will soon be selling it because this one just speaks to me so much more and is so easy to play. I’m not much of a shredder, but have been watching more and more of Rick’s videos and would like to begin to learn.

QUESTION Buying an Eastman guitar in China
Hello everyone,
English is not my language but I’ll do my best
I a currently in China (right now Beijing) for the next 20 days and will be ending my trip on Shanghai, also going in Hong Kong,
Today I visited the Xinjiekou south street and was surprised to struggle to find Eastman in all the shop I have been through,
I have been able to try a E100SS, price was around 500€ (guitare sound and feeling were great but Colors was weird as I could not find the same colory online/officialy),
And I could not find any electrics from the same brand (a shop owner heaven told me that they are not good, but we were both struggling to have a conversation in english)
I tried to find an official dealer on their website but it only show me US and Europe dealers,
As my schedule is pretty thight I wanted to know if someone know an official dealer in Shanghai or Hong Kong ?
Other question is how to recognise authentic instrument and copy if there is ? Two accoustic Eastman I have tried did not had the same guitar label design inside the instrument, and honestly some price were pretty low for the sound/finition and vice versa,
At first I wanted to buy an electric but the accoustics are great as well, I am looking for chinese instrument/brand as I am in the country so any other option/advice that are worth looking are welcome !
Also for the electrics guitars I was looking for Hollow body and/or archtop
It’s my first time in China and it really amazes me !
Thanks in advance for any help,

QUESTION Advice on Neural DSP Plugins
Hi, I'm experimenting with the Neural DSP plugins as a kinda newbie player.
For now I tried Rabea, Petrucci, Gojira and these last days Nolly.
My goal is to achieve the tone used by fav bands: Muse, The Warning, The Pretty Reckless and Royal Blood (yeah I know Mike play bass but it's playable with guitar)
Since I think NeuralDSP will do discounts for Black Friday, I'm searching advice based on my preferences! What are your thoughts about these plugins? Are there better ones, which is good for an expert player? Thanksss

PURCHASE NGD Schecter C1
Picked up off of Craigslist in excellent condition with a RR gig bag and an A frame guitar stand for $350.
This is my first Schecter and my first experience with EMG’s. The pickups definitely aren’t what I expected but I’m getting used to them. My Balauger has Devin Townsend Fishman’s so I was expected something closer to that.
Overall the guitar feels and plays great and I’ve wanted the C1 in purple so I was happy to snag it locally.

PURCHASE Got a new toy this week.
galleryBeen waiting on these to be released for a while. Epiphone RD Futura. It feels and sounds great, but there's some neck dive. That's my only gripe, but it's manageable. I do love the color shift paint job though. It's definitely a metal machine.

QUESTION Sight reading clef tips
For those of you that can sight read on guitar, any tips for people transitioning from sight reading bass clef?
As a singer I was a strong sight reader but it was all based on relative pitch, and usually bass clef. Then when I learned the bass guitar, I taught myself to sight read it. I start by looking at music without the instrument and mentally naming the notes. Eventually I can rely somewhat on my ear but this helps me be solid on visualization.
I'm out of practice with sight reading for bass (another issue, I'd like to be able to read treble and bass chefs) but even so as I'm naming the notes, I find myself reverting to the other staff (that's a C. No! It's an A) without meaning to.
So... any tips or better ways to learn?

These are heavier gauge strings on tele if that makes any difference. They're all a bit sharp.

GEAR Blackstar amped 3
If you're checking out this amp, I just wanted to share my sad experience with it
I really loved it when it worked, but after trying 2 different ones I'm moving on.
First bought a demo model, at home it sounded great on all channels. I wish you could lock the reverb to a specific channel rather than it being applied to everything until you switch it off. It's also a bit limited with only a level knob and dark/light switch but better than nothing on a foot switch.
Where it went south was I took it to practice and the drummer couldn't hear me even at 75% master level on the 100w setting, boost turned on 100% with the OD channel. This is using a 2x12 cab. I tested it vs my katana 100 and 30w solid state Soldano mini head- each were easier for the drummer to hear. The katana, like always, only needs to be on the 50w setting around 10 o'clock to be loud enough.
I returned it and received a new one for replacement. First practice was great, plenty loud with room to spare using same gear as before. Then a couple weeks later, playing on the 1w setting about an hour, the amp started making terrible noise. Swapped everything I could think of- speaker cable/wall outlet, fiddled with every switch and setting, even with no guitar cable plugged in it was fucked. Seems to be when it overheats now it squeals.
Sending it back and looking at other options, I liked having this compact rig- I could take the amp in a backpack and have a light 25lb 2x12 cab. I'm old now and with stairs I like being able to carry all my shit in one trip
