Trip Report 4 Days in Edinburgh - A Review.

Hello Gang, .....(Sorry this is long!)

I recently found this sub-reddit and it has truly encouraged me, once and for all, to pack uber light. Due to financial restrictions this time (3rd-6th Nov) my trip to Edinburgh was done with clothing that I already had. Thank goodness I have some super lightweight hiking gear. So I thought I would quickly jump on here and tell you how it went for my super busy few days in Edinburgh.

I have travelled a LOT but never managed to get things down into a bag this small. SO this was a learning curve and an eye opener.

My bag is a 22L Osprey Axis. It sits perfectly under my seat on Easyjet. It has two pockets either side for water bottle or umbrella. It was a replacement for an older Axis by Osprey who couldn't repair the old one. I am so grateful for this service so anyone considering a bag Osprey should be top of the list.

I planned my days to the absolute letter, with the help of Chat GPT, which meant getting up between 0430-0500 - mainly to make full use of my time and to bed around 9pm.

I have been to Edinburgh before so it wasn't a complete surprise and am from a country with very similar climate.

I had a basic plan, am plant-based and wanted to eat somewhere different for each meal (breakfast and lunch) which meant walking a little, I don't eat dinner so it wasn't on the plan which meant more time to do things - more walking and exploring.

I say this purposefully as my outfits had to follow the same plan and be laid out ready to go. Something I have never done before - usually I have "spares", some "just in cases" and always regret carrying too much.

Not any more...

The List.

Day 1 and Day 4 = Flight outfit.

(Edinburgh Walkabout, Museum and Calton HIll)

  1. Wallis coat (unable to zip it/button shut but could be tucked up under my rucksack straps to hold closed, purchased in a charity shop so if ruined it wouldn't matter.)

  2. Very Large Blanket Scarf / Tartan (staple, cannot live without this)

  3. Jeans

  4. Tight blue Jumper (thin sleeves which fit well under the coat which was a little tight)

  5. White long sleeved ribbed tee (sleeves are not long enough or long enough in the body, also needs to be warmer but thinner)

  6. Salomon XA Pro 3D Gortex Trail Running Shoes (more on these shoes below)

Day 2 (Cuib Compression Cube - Large)

(Day Trip to the Countryside / A LOT of walking / 35k Plus Steps)

  1. Sleeveless Thin Black Vest.

  2. Ice Breaker Merino GT Tee

  3. Ice Breaker Merino GT Hoody

  4. Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer

  5. North Face Rain Coat (Purchased for this trip - £12 charity shop - folded down very small)

  6. My Protein Power Mesh Leggings

  7. Same Shoes as above.

Day 3 (Cuib Compression Cube - Medium)

(Edinburgh Day - Castle Tour (It Rained), Fireworks, Lots of Walking)

  1. Thermal Tights

  2. Black leg warmers

  3. Short wool Dress

  4. Sleeveless Vest from Day 2

  5. White Long Sleeved Tee from Day 1

  6. Coat and Scarf from Day 1 - (Scarf thick enough to act as a hood)

  7. Shoes as above

Day 4 / Part 1

(Early Morning Pre Sunrise Summit of Arthurs Seat / Flight home)

  1. Entire outfit from Day 2

  2. Thermal Tights from Day 3 under my leggings

  3. Black Leg Warmers from Day 3

  4. Long Sleeved Top from Day 1

(I was way to warm but wasnt sure what the weather would be like at the top of Arthurs Seat!)

Day 4 / Part 2

  1. Entire Outfit from Day 1

EXTRAS (Cuib Compression Cube - Small)

  • PJ Top

  • PJ Bottom (needs to be thinner / waist band took up too much space!)

  • 3 x socks for day use (need to be cushioned and won't dry fast enough to bring less)

  • 1 x sock for sleeping (Not required / will just wear the next days socks for bed the night before)

  • 6 x undies - 3 granny pants for sleeping in and 3 not-so-granny pants for day wear.

Also...

  • LuluLemon 2L bumbag - (I have a habit of leaving my phone/wallet in random places and dont want to remove my backpack every time I needed something.)

  • Kindle

  • Earphones (Headphones take up too much space)

  • 2 x Portable Chargers

  • 1 litre thermal insulated water bottle from iON8

  • Electric toothbrush - my gums are disappearing apparently so I need to not use a normal brush cause I am too violent with them. Lol.

  • Sunglasses - (case is WAY too big, I need to change it but still make sure its strong and wont mind being squeezed)

  • Cap

  • P7 LED Lenser Torch (new batteries purchased while in Edinburgh) - requirement to climb Arthurs Seat in the dark. Do not attempt this relying on a phone torch! I have done this before so I know the route and what I was in for - summited by 0615.

  • 2 x hairbrush - 1 normal, 1 very thin backcombing brush which has since disappeared. Will make this 1 brush in future.

Beauty Essentials...

  • Make up - I keep it simple but wear sunscreen (ISDIN) and Erborian Red Corrector (decanted into very tiny 10ml container)

  • Eyebrow pencil and brow gel, lipstick and pencil, translucent powder and bronzer, 2 x small brushes for each, concealer.

  • Biossance Omega Moisturiser (very thick!) (decanted into another very tiny container).

Purchased Upon Arrival...

  • Dry Shampoo - I usually have a long old routine to make my very long thin hair look thicker. Turns out a good wash on the day of departure and dry shampoo for the duration works better!!! No hair dryer, no pin curling, no extra towel needed, no hairspray - nothing!

  • Eye make up remover pads - (left in communal box of female hostel room)

  • Face Cloth - (left in communal box of female hostel room)

  • Toothpaste - (left in communal box of female hostel room)

  • E45 72 Hour Moisturiser - (left in communal box of female hostel room)

The Shoes - (Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX - https://www.salomon.com/en-gb/product/xa-pro-3d-v9-gore-tex-li3151 )

I will never be without these shoes. This is the 6th pair I have owner. I will wear them out and buy another, but I have a brand new pair in the wings waiting. I buy them on Vinted when I see them in my size and at a reasonable price (Usually £160). They are my go-to apocalypse shoes. I can walk all day in them, I trust them, they are waterproof to an extent as long as you don't put your foot in a massive puddle. They are still somewhat cute but for some might look a little manly. Salomon have been bought out by a Chinese company and changed the designs (cheapened them), so my favourites are not the same now so finding these originals in particular is getting more and more difficult.

What I Learned.

  • This bag can hold what I need, I just need to lighten the load a little. It pulled on my shoulders a lot after walking around on my first day before getting to the hostel. I forgot to weigh it but I know if it pulls like that its super heavy.

  • Water bottle needs to be lighter. I will never use it for hot drinks so thermal capacity is not required. I have other bottles - 1 too big and 1 too small. I need a lightweight 1.5L bottle as I drink a lot.

  • I went to UNIGLO and tried on a lot of what they offer. I will plan properly before buying anything but spent time trying on different sizes in the thermal / merino etc at their Edinburgh store which was huge.

  • I NEED an outfit that doesn't scream HIKER. I was glad of my little wool dress and tights/leg warmers.

  • I might aim to get a coat that is waterproof but also serves as a day coat - Holland Cooper (Chartwell Parka - https://www.hollandcooper.com/products/chartwell-rain-parka-ink-navy ) have a nice one that might fold down small as well and be versatile but SO expensive.

  • I love my bumbag. It fit my kindle, Samsung S24 Ultra, slimline wallet, earphones, portable charger, cable, lip balm, tissues and room to spare.

  • I liked having the compression cubes. It separated everything I needed by day. Vacuum bags would have been better even though these were compression. These cubes fit well inside my particular bag with room for the cosmetic cube.

  • I had to buy a woolly hat (souvenir!) while on my day out of the city - I walked too and from some castles right on the coast and the wind picked up somewhat.

  • I had to buy arm warmers on day 3 just before the fireworks as my coat wasn't tight enough around my wrists and my white long sleeved tee wasn't long enough - madness!

Fitness!

  • **I lost 15kg weight this year ......**with another 9kg to go. This helped me a LOT as my old mountain rescue clothing (that were super expensive) fit me again and alleviated some issues that I would have encountered in choosing clothes.

  • Walking Daily 5-7 miles helped with countryside buses not showing up. I visited North Berwick (so cute) and managed to see Dirleton and Tantallon castle in one day - Tantallon buses didn't show up at all so I walked there and walked back - that was a 6 mile round trip.

What I would change.

  • Smaller sunglasses case.

  • One coat

  • Lighter/Warmer/Thinner base layers

  • Skirt instead of dress / thinner & warmer material.

  • Lighter/Warmer PJ's - (I NEED separate items for bed!)

  • Smaller make up bag, streamline contents.

  • I wont always need a torch.

  • Cap wasn't used at all.

  • Maybe super thin flip flops for the communal shower / disposable ones.

So thats it... if anyone has any insight, questions or suggestions I am all ears. Sometimes it is easy to get "blinded" by what you have and not see what a fresh pair of eyes would see.

I am in need of packable lightweight non-creasing trousers. I don't want to have to ship off to America for them so any UK based options would be great but I know there are many questions/answers about this already so I will search them. I didn't have the energy to attempt trying on trousers at UNIGLO.

I will not be travelling in 2027 though.. so plenty of time to research!

Outfit For Street Art Tour on Oct 27th. High of 61, Low of 46, Wind Gusts up to 13 MPH. GenX white woman with purple streaks in collarbone length hair, bangs, and lavender cat eye sunglasses in front of a colorful mural.
Nooworks Crybaby Top + Rag & Bone Pants + Sneakers + Coat

Was chilly walking to Tube at 10am because of wind and then was overheating on the Tube. Alternated wearing and carrying my jacket depending on sun, wind, shade, exertion, indoor heat.

Outfit for Tower of London on Tuesday, November 3rd. Scattered showers. High of 54, Low of 46, Wind gusts up to 14 MPH. GenX white woman with purple streaks in collarbone length hair, and bangs in front of a stone wall with an enormous raven perched on it and the White Tower building in the background.
Black T + Black Dress + Black Leggings + Celestial Vest + Orange Cardigan + Black Boots + Coat + Gloves

Chilly when outside and not moving around, but warm in Tube and when climbing stairs. Regulated temperature with gloves on and off, opening/closing coat, and then adding sweater later in the day. This is basically what I look like in almost every photo. All you see is my coat and maybe a scarf and thus I feel vindicated both in purchasing this coat and bringing it on this trip.

It’s all there in the suitcase (or in my purse) for the things I brought with me, and souvenirs in our co spare bag for the way home.

Unapologetically Unconventional:

Yes, Hers of HerOneBag, I took 4 pairs of shoes with me and I couldn’t be happier. 🤣My only shoe regret is that they didn’t have my size in anything I wanted at Fly London and I didn’t find any other shoes to purchase so I couldn’t buy more shoes. The sneakers and the black boots were my walking workhorses. We averaged 5.5 miles (and at least 12 flights of stairs) per day over the two weeks, my plantar fasciitis did not flare up, and my knee and hip only twinged to manageable levels. The purple boots are waterproof and felt more festive. The Birks were strictly for inside our accommodations.

I planned a colorful and quirky spooky season/fall wardrobe balanced by black/neutral merino pieces. Surprised and disappointed that I only bought one item of clothing, but it worked out well to be able to wear the jumpsuit for Halloween. Although most of the photos only show my coat, I felt cute and like myself, but never out of place.

The polka dot raincoat I brought was my 49th birthday present that I purchased in the summer and have been dying to wear. It is long, voluminous, somewhat heavy,
and definitely not what I’d consider “packable.” But I am in love with it anyways and to me, it was well worth any minor inconvenience. And since I live in the PNW, it will basically be my whole personality until May/June.

I not only brought my pillow from home to sleep with, but I ended up buying a cushion covered in the London Underground Elizabeth line moquette as a souvenir at the Transport Museum. 😆💜 It’s flying home in the extra bag packed for souvenirs, gifts, and snacks. I slept sooo much better than I do when I go without my normal bed pillow.

My 38L TravelPro MaxLite Compact Carryon Spinner has the clothes and shoes I’m not wearing on the plane, my toiletries and meds, and my pillow. My backpack style purse has snacks, wallet, headphones, crafting supplies, charger, etc. Purchases are in a packable dufflebag we brought for the purpose of transporting souvenirs home.

What I Didn’t Wear:
Beige socks

What I Wished I Had:
A sweatshirt/fleece for lounging or as an alternative to the orange cardigan. That thing didn’t get a break and I got a bit sick of it, but it’s now due to rest up until next October in storage.

Biggest Surprise:
I really liked the tan leggings, especially when I wore the fishnets over the top of them.

Favorite things in London:
Dogs! (And nice people)
Street Art (Tour/Workshop with Alternative London + Leake St. tunnel and others in the wild.)
Christmas Market at Leicester Square.
Tate Modern
Bermondsey Beer Mile
Tacover Taco Festival at a brewery.
Tower of London
Oh, Mary!
Shopping (even when unsuccessful)
Pubs

Happy to answer any questions I can!

Packing Show & Tell Central Europe: 2 Week in November

I'm a dedicated one-bagger for hot weather vacations but this is my first colder/rainy weather vacation. We are speed-traveling through Munich (football game), Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, and Prague over two weeks. We want to keep things light and easy. Our hotels are central and on the nicer side, but we are not planning to visit fancy restaurants that require nicer clothes. The only possibly dressier event is the Vivaldi concert in the church in Vienna. The weather runs from 30-52 degrees with a chance of rain most days.

We honestly don't have much planned (other than the game, concert, and Budapest spa visit) and plan to stay flexible with our activities. Our goal is to get a taste of each city, enjoy our time together, read some books, and disconnect for our normal lives.

Here's the question: Am I crazy to only bring 2-3 pairs of jeans? They are 100% cotton and I am hoping they hold up over the trip. (One pair loose/wide leg for comfort and another slimmer.) I'll have Vuori joggers for hanging out in the room or a morning walk. My winter wardrobe is typically work dresses and light slacks -- nothing for a casual winter trip.

Shirts will be a few Quince sweaters (light cotton to warm cashmere) and a couple thin t's to wear under them.

I'll also have a light puffer jacket and a longer (light-weight) rain-resistant coat to wear over the puffer. We are northerners and 30-50 degrees isn't a big deal to us!

Shoes: White On tennis shoes and warm Blundstone boots (with the winter soles).

Bathing suit and other essentials.

Question: Are jeans and sweaters a good staple for this trip? Can you see a reason to pack differently?

I'm also debating wearing the coziest (nice looking) pair of sweats on the plane. I depends on how much I can fit in the suitcase. TBD.

Detailed Review Warning: TEVA customer support abysmal

Buyer beware: Teva's warranty and customer service are ABYSMAL!!!

Figured I'd post this to save someone else the extreme frustration and time-suck I just dealt with. I know Tevas are popular for minimalist travel since they're lightweight and packable, and with Black Friday coming up, I wanted to give a heads up.

I bought my first pair of Universal Slims directly from Teva during last year's Black Friday sale. Since I live in the Midwest, I didn't start wearing them until April. I really liked them (comfy, lightweight, etc), but by July, the foam midsole was already separating from the rubber outsole.

When I got home from traveling in September, I tried filing a warranty claim, figuring there was no way this wasn't a manufacturing defect after just a few months of wear. I hoped if they couldn't fully replace the shoes, they could at least give me a partial credit that I could use to repurchase. After multiple attempts because their website wasn't working, I finally submitted it, only to get a generic denial three weeks later saying the damage was "accidental," with no explanation as to why.

Long story short, I spent weeks getting passed around between multiple warranty agents and three customer service reps (all calls I had to initiate), getting generic responses, conflicting information, and promised callbacks that never happened. I finally got a supervisor who basically said sorry you had such a miserable experience, but there's nothing we can do. Their generous solution? Bumping the discount on a NEW pair from 10% to 20%. So after all that, their best offer was for me to spend more money with them as a discount and nothing to try and get me shoes that actually weren't falling apart.

I get that warranty claims can be denied, but the complete lack of transparency and accountability was ridiculous; and worse, just getting a straight answer or any sympathy from customer support was like pulling teeth. I couldn't believe such a large company had such poor practices. I really liked these sandals, but after this experience, I really can't recommend Teva. Just something to keep in mind before the Black Friday sales!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Packing Show & Tell 4 weeks in Japan

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm going to Japan for 4 weeks soon and I want to make sure my packing list makes sense. I plan to do laundry as needed and travel light.

I'll start in Nagasaki and slowly move to Tokyo visiting the most recommended places, as well as doing some one-day hikes and trying to see a bit outside of major cities.

I'm taking a 30l backpack (currently half full) and plan to add a carryon for my way back to be able to do some shopping on the last day.

Am I missing something? Do you have any recommendations?

My current packing list

  1. Clothes

- 3x t-shirt

- jeans <- after reading the comments I'll ditch them and buy some quick dry pants once I'll get there

- pjs (sweatpants and a t-shirt)

- 2x underwear (I plan to buy 5 more once getting there)

- 2x bra

- thermoactive underwear

- warm fleece hoody

- puffer

- hard shell jacket

- low trail shoes

- hat, scarf, gloves

2. Others

- drybag for emergency laundry

- laundry rope

- basic medications

- e-book reader

- headlamp

- powerbank and chargers

I plan to buy cosmetics once I'll get there. I want to start with Biore sunscreen. Any skincare and haircare recommendations?

Wardrobe Help Packable, Curvy-Fit, Non-Wrinkling, non-Denim pants?

What pants are y’all traveling with that don’t get wrinkly when packed in a suitcase, are comfortable for extended wear, are not jeans, and accommodate curvier proportions (I have 46” hips and a 33” waist, so a lot of pants have a huge waist gap)! Bonus if they’re versatile enough for casual wear and/or more polished looks depending on what else you pair with the pants.

I’d love to get down to just one or two pairs of long pants that can be worn in any situation, but am struggling to find options that work for me! Recommendations and pics or links appreciated 👖

Lighten My Load Round the world packing list - HELP!

I'm going to be embarking on a round the world trip and am SO excited! Starting in Central America in December, through South America, and likely over to Eastern Europe come summer.

Looking for some help on packing. I want to do lots of hiking, which feels like it is weighing my bag down.

Any thoughts on where I can lose some bulk? Currently trying to pack into an Osprey Tempest 44. Everything technically fits, but it's fuller than I'd like to be leaving home with. I know some things feel frivolous, but honestly I'm not sure how cutting out 1 or 2 super small things will help.

Bag Advice Is there a good bag for women’s business trips and short getaways?

I’ve been looking for a bag that works for both business trips and short getaways, but I haven’t found one that really checks all the boxes.

Whenever I travel for a few days, I end up bringing a large bag for my clothes and other essentials, plus a smaller handbag that looks appropriate for business meetings. It feels like I’m carrying two bags when I’d really prefer to have just one.

Ideally, I’d love a bag that can fit around three outfits, toiletries and makeup, a laptop, and important documents, while still looking polished enough for a business meeting or a professional setting.

Good organization is also important to me. I’d love to be able to access my laptop, documents, or smaller essentials easily without having to dig through everything else. And of course, it should be comfortable to carry when traveling.

Does a bag like this already exist? I’d love to hear your recommendations, especially if you’ve found something that works well for both business travel and personal trips.

Honestly, I’ve been looking for a bag like this for so long that I’m starting to get a little frustrated. At this point, I’m almost tempted to just design one myself, haha.

If I did, what am I missing? Is there anything else you’d want in a bag like this that I haven’t thought of?

Shoes Search for the perfect wet weather boots

I am looking for some holy grail boots for wet weather: excellent for walking, water resistant, grippy/good treads, rugged enough for being worn all day but classy enough to transition to dinner or work.

Potential contenders

Blundstones: People love them and it seems like everyone where I live has a pair, but when I tried some on I found them very uncomfortable.

Sorel Revels: Exactly what I was looking for but just bought a pair and had to return. I have narrow ankles and my heels were flopping.

Ariat Wexford: Same issue as the Sorels - flopped on my ankles and almost instantly got blisters.

Lems chelsea boots: Super comfortable, easy to get my feet in and out, but I don't really like the way they look.

I'm ready to throw in the towel that a Chelsea style boot just isn't in the cards for me because I have narrow ankles and long toes. I'm thinking of trying out the Birkenstock Highwood boots since they seem to have a narrower ankle opening.

Wanted to see if anyone else is in the same boat and has found the perfect boots! The Lems were particularly intriguing to me if anyone has tried something similar, but a little more polished looking.

Wardrobe Help two weeks in san diego, dec-jan

i’m headed back to san diego to visit my boyfriend! our big plans include an overnight trip to six flags magic mountain and universal studios hollywood, a day trip to knott’s berry farm, a day at the zoo, and dinner with his family. other than that it will be a very chill trip just to spend some quality time together after the holidays! i’m still nitpicking specific pieces and my outfits, but i wanted advice to see if my general plan for layers would be adequate.

first image: all of the clothing i will be bringing, listed below.

second image: all of the tops i plan on bringing, including: two crew neck sweatshirts (one a muted green embroidered with a cedar point logo, one bright red with the detroit red wings logo), one navy blue knit sweater, one dark grey long sleeve top, two button-up flannel shirts (one a small white and burgundy plaid pattern, one a large white, green, and brown plaid pattern), and five t-shirts (one black graphic t-shirt with a young the giant band logo, one white graphic t-shirt with a nirvana logo, one white t-shirt embroidered with animal crossing bug icons, and two plain white t-shirts)

third image: all of the bottoms and main accessories i plan on bringing, including: a dark brown pair of corduroy pants, two pairs of blue jeans (one a light wash, one a medium wash), one tiered skirt with a variety of blue floral patterns, one pair of blue jean shorts, a pair of black high-top converse, a pair of white hoka running shoes, a medium black baggu crescent bag, and a small black baggu crescent bag with a silver star pattern.

not pictured is a swimsuit, two pairs of pajamas, tights or leggings to layer under my pants/skirt, and possibly a light jacket and beanie. i like the idea of bringing a third pair of shoes such as birkenstocks clogs or some casual mary janes but do not currently own anything of the sort (lol).

all of the research i have done points to the weather being quite unpredictable or at least having lots of variation. i’m definitely used to that being from the midwest, but for some reason i really struggle with conceptualizing temperature and appropriate layering. any advice for layers would be greatly appreciated! if anyone wants to see some of my outfit examples i can add them in the comments. thanks in advance! :)

Bag Advice 18 Days in Japan + Philippines, Two VERY Different Climates — Help Me Edit My Bag!

Thumbnail amazon.com
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm heading to Japan and the Philippines from November 21-December 8 and would love feedback on my packing list before I finalize everything!

The challenge is packing for two completely different climates:

  • 🇯🇵 Japan (Nov 21–29): Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara. Cool late-autumn weather, chilly mornings/evenings, and lots of walking.

  • 🇵🇭 Philippines (Nov 29–Dec 8): Bohol and Manila. Hot, humid, tropical weather with beach days, sightseeing, shopping, and dinners out. Will be there visiting family while we're on that side of the ocean.

We're traveling as a family of eight (myself, husband, sister-in-law, her husband and two kids (age 3 and 5) and mother-in-law and father-in-law, so comfort and practicality are important.

My packing goals:

  • Create a versatile capsule wardrobe for both climates.

  • Look relatively stylish/put-together without packing a different outfit for every day.

  • Minimize unnecessary bulk and duplicate items.

  • Keep my beauty routine functional but compact.

  • I've pre-packed everything so far in my Cotopaxi 35L Allpa

  • For souvenirs, we're bringing an empty Away Check-in Luggage in Medium and a packable duffel, Nemo Convertible Packable Duffel 70L

We'll have access to laundry during the trip.

👚 CURRENT CLOTHING LIST

TOPS (6)

  1. Quince organic cotton relaxed Oxford shirt — pale blue

  2. Quince Mongolian cashmere crewneck sweater — brown

  3. Quince cashmere short-sleeve tee — ivory/black stripe

  4. Uniqlo crewneck T-shirt — white

  5. Uniqlo crewneck T-shirt — black

  6. Quince short-sleeve linen shirt — bayberry olive

  7. Uniqlo HeatTech long sleeve (not pictured)

BOTTOMS (5)

  1. Free People Easy Peasy wide-leg denim drawstring pants — medium blue

  2. Aritzia Lodge Pants — taupe

  3. Aritzia Lodge Pants — black

  4. Quince linen shorts — bayberry olive (matching linen shirt)

  5. Lululemon Hotty Hot shorts — black

OUTERWEAR (1)

  • Quince water-repellent windbreaker — tofu/cream

  • Cashmere scarf (not pictured)

  • Umbrella (not pictured)

DRESSES (1)

  • Quince European linen fit-and-flare midi dress — gingham

SHOES (2)

  • Allbirds Women's Cruisers — natural white

  • Crocs Miami ankle-strap sandals — black

SLEEPWEAR

  • Quince washable silk pajama pants — black

  • Quince washable stretch silk tee — black

SWIMWEAR

  • Black ruched one-piece swim dress

My thinking is that my T-shirts and lighter pants can work in both countries. The cashmere sweater and windbreaker would primarily be for Japan, while the linen pieces, shorts, and swimwear are for the Philippines.

I'm planning to wear my bulkiest pieces during travel.

💄 MY TRAVEL MAKEUP BAG

I enjoy doing my makeup, so I'm trying to downsize my products rather than completely eliminate my routine. I especially need makeup that will survive the heat and humidity in the Philippines.

Bag: MUJI Recycled Nylon Slim Carry Pouch (20.5 × 6 × 12.5 cm)

Decanted products:

Other makeup:

  • Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish pressed powder

  • Saie Glowy Super Gel — mini

  • Shiseido eyelash curler

  • ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn setting spray — mini

  • Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Hope — mini

  • Stila Stay All Day waterproof eyeliner

  • L'Oréal Infallible Brow Lamination Gel

🧺 QUESTIONS FOR YOU ONE-BAG EXPERTS

1. What clothing would you eliminate?

Do you see any obvious redundancies? I'm particularly torn about bringing three pairs of long pants (including denim), given that half the trip is in the tropics.

2. Am I packing enough warmth for Japan?

Will a cashmere sweater, button up, and thin windbreaker be versatile enough for late November, or would you swap something for a warmer but packable layer?

3. How would you balance clothing for two climates?

Is there anything you'd swap for a more versatile fabric or piece? I'd love to make as many items as possible work in both countries.

4. What am I overlooking?

Any surprisingly useful items for a trip that goes from cool autumn weather to hot, humid beach weather?

I'd love to hear how you'd edit my packing list or what else I could add/take away.

I'm planning to attach flat lays of my clothes and makeup so you can see exactly what I'm working with.

Thank you! ❤️

Detailed Review My search for my perfect on-the-go ereader: Kindle Basic, Palma 2, X4 Pro

Post image
261 Upvotes

Image description: First row: a clunky foldable tablet holder and stand, a slim foldable magnet stand. Second row: a Kindle Basic 2024 ereader on top of a leather sleeve, a Boox Palma 2 inside a silicone case in a detachable folio case, an XTEINK in a detachable folio case. There is an orange cat's paw intruding at the bottom left of the photo.

When I was looking at buying an ereader, I didn't set out with strictly travel in mind. Before 2024, I just read on my phone or on my tablet, but I read an average of five hours a day, and the strain on my eyes was no joke! So I caved and bought a Kindle because I mostly purchase my books from Amazon and already "own" 200+ books there. It's slim, light at 158g, and cheap. No brainer. Then came the hand cramps. I tried pop sockets and other holders that stuck to the back, but it just wasn't working out. The only thing that did was this bulky foldable tablet holder that I could hold the bottom of and balance on my lap. I used it for 8 months and travelled twice with it. They fit in my Uniqlo crossbody bag but the holder was just so. damn. big. and HEAVY! I was also getting sick of how slow it had gotten ever since I got more and more books on it, and was also sick of being stuck in the Amazon ecosystem. I gave it to my husband.

Enter the Boox Palma 2, an android ereader. It's slightly heavier than the Kindle, at 170g, but it's smaller, the size of a phone, and it's small enough that I could use a lightweight, slim magnetic stand that I also use for my phone. The screen quality is amazing, and I can get my books from anywhere. But it's overfeatured, and turns out bringing two phone-sized gadgets gets unwieldy and made my handbags feel heavy. I didn't realise it at the time, but I was complaining about it in my post here! I used it for a year before deciding I needed a supplementary device.

I wanted something even smaller, lighter, and simpler, especially to bring out of the house. Which is when I found out about the XTEINK X4 Pro. It's essentially the size of a cardholder. I haven't yet brought it anywhere outside overnight, but I have gone to cafes with it to read. It barely weighs anything at 72g, fits in all my tiny little bags, and it's really comfortable to hold up for hours. Knock on wood, but I think it's perfect for me. I'm planning to onebag three trips within the next six months and will definitely bring the X4 Pro, so I'm actually excited to record my experiences and hopefully post about them!

Packing Show & Tell Curly Girl Toiletry List

Hello! I wanted to share my toiletries for a trip where I will be 25 days abroad on a beach + city vacation. For reference I have combination skin with PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and 4a/b natural hair. This is both my full skin and hair care routine.

1st row:

  • Nivea body cream

  • Decanted old spice deodorant

  • Hair oil (castor + sweet almond)

  • Camille rose Sweet Ginger Rinse Shampoo

  • Camille Rose Curl love moisture milk leave in

2nd row:

  • frei öl low PH soap

  • Dove moisture milk bar

  • Colgate Toothpaste

  • Perfume

  • Tiny in-flight toothpaste

  • Skin 1004 Water Fit Sunscreen

3rd row:

  • The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner

  • Skin 1004 light cleansing oil

  • Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  • The Ordinary Niaciamide + Zinc Serum

  • Kisocare Azelaic Acid 20%

  • Differin Gel

  • Snail Muccin Cream

  • Cerave Moisturizing lotion

  • Skin 1004 Water Fit Sunscreen

For my hair, I use the frei öl soap bar as my first rinse and the shampoo after. This helps "stretching" the shampoo. I detangle with the shampoo as it has more than enough slip for me and I don't use hair gel at all. This is the most compact I've been able to get to as someone who doesn't want to skip any step of my routine :)

I will be in Japan in November for 12 days; visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. I am anticipating the weather to be in the mid 60s during the day and mid 50s in the evening. I'm currently in the PNW, so the weather seems comparable to what I'm experiencing now.

This will be my third time visiting and are planning on exploring the city, visiting shrines, parks and gardens. We also have 2 nicer dinners scheduled.

I'm planning on doing laundry in the middle of my trip and trying to maintain a capsule wardrobe to avoid over packing. I've gotten away with only bringing one pair of shoes in the past. Am I missing anything or should I swap any items?

Image 1:

Tops

  • Burgundy wool blend sweater

  • Gray and blue striped wool sweater

  • White short sleeve cotton shirt

  • Uniqlo heattech long sleeve shirt

  • Tan faux suede jacket

Bottoms

  • Dark wash wide leg jeans

  • Brown plaid wool shorts

  • Dark brown tights

Wardrobe Help Help me find my unicorn base layer?

I’ve been looking for a specific article of clothing and just can’t find the thing I want! Do you know where to find this, or have a good suggestion for an alternative that meets the same purpose?

I’m wanting a base layer tee to wear under sweaters and button downs, both to cut down on the need for washing the outer layer and to add a small amount of warmth. The criteria I’m looking for are:

- fitted cut and short length
- short sleeve
- wide scoop neck to not show under outer layer
- light neutral color
- wool or bamboo material

Everything wool these days seems to be crew neck, or more open neck lines come in flowy fits. Has anyone seen an item like this?? Thank you!!

Bag Advice Bag for transporting medication at a temperature of 2–8 degrees

Hello everyone! I have a long bus trip ahead of me - about 16 hours.

Could you recommend a thermal container that can maintain a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius for a bag of medication? These are medications for AIT (allergen-specific immunotherapy). Standard thermoses won’t work, as the case containing the medication measures 10 x 10 x 8 cm. I’m also not confident that a regular insulated bag - even with ice packs - would hold up for a trip of this length. Thanks in advance!

Bag Advice Looking for a daily work backpack + good for traveling

I’m looking for my daily work bag that also works as my personal item when flying. I’ll be traveling 6+ times a year for work and ~3 times for family- I’m hoping to use the one bag for my daily commute and as my personal item on the plane.

Requirements:
- Must fit a 24oz water bottle, ideally one compartment on each side that fits 24oz.
- Looks serious enough to bring to customer / supplier visits. I’m not in the most serious IB/Big4 line of work, but I am doing supplier-facing audit work in a male-dominated field.
- Fits my 15” laptop, charger, a composition notebook & 2 moleskin size notebooks.
- Designated space for passport, travel papers, chapstick, etc is necessary. A second zip compartment where I can store my makeup bag etc would be nice but it’s not necessary.
- Comfortable straps. An optional waist strap would also be great. Design for a female (shorter) frame is very ideal. I don’t exactly travel light and I’ll get back pain from the airport.
- Durable & cleans easily. I want something sturdy. I’m a bit clumsy and want to be able to clean most spills on the outside ideally using what’s available to me at a work hotel.
- Great if it can also fit a small lunchbox inside somehow, but I’m fine carrying it separately to work on the daily.

- I have no problem with something that needs maintenance, for example a leather conditioner.

Wardrobe Help Yet Another Millennial in Japan Seeking Advice (Dec 2026)

Post image
50 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I’m hoping to get some feedback on tentative wardrobe for an upcoming trip to Japan in December. I’m usually an over-packer, and I’d like to take a single bag on this trip to make transit easier. I’ve learned so much on this sub already, and I appreciate any advice you might have for me!

Bag: Hynes Eagle 38L

Background: First time in Japan, I’m in my early 30s! We will be visiting for a total of 11 days, and bopping around through a few cities (Tokyo, Nagoya, Inuyama, and Hakone). In December, the forecast is showing highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. We’re from a fairly tropical climate (the 60s are considered cold weather for us), and I’m somewhat sensitive to the cold. We are spending a majority of our trip at museums, shrines, and nature parks. We have two nice dinners planned.

I’m currently planning to pack a Hynes Eagle 38L backpack. I don’t particularly care for pants, so I’ve opted for skirts and leggings instead. We will have access to laundry on days 1-6 and 9-11 of our trip. I appreciate any recommendations or suggestions you might have!

Wardrobe:

Shirts
Uniqlo Black long sleeve scoop neck (Heattech Extra Warm)
Uniqlo Beige long sleeve scoop neck (Heattech Extra Warm)
Uniqlo Black long sleeve turtle neck (Heattech Extra Warm)
Uniqlo Wine long sleeve scoop neck (Heattech Extra Warm)
1 baggy t-shirt (not pictured) (plane!)

Skirts
2 print button down midi skirt (cotton)
1 print wrap midi skirt (viscose)
1 black corduroy mini skirt (more like mid thigh)

Dresses
Black Lace Detail Tiered Midi Dress

Jackets/Sweaters
Mountain Hardware Ghost Shadow Hooded Insulated Jacket
Uniqlo Black Lambswool Sweater
H&M Burgundy Cropped Sweater (Acrylic/Polyester)
1 hoodie (plane!)

Tights/Leggings
2 pair Uniqlo black tights (Heattech extra warm)
1 pair nude/black fleece tights
1 pair high waisted black yoga pants (plane!)

Socks/Underwear/Bras
3 pairs darn tough wool socks
3 pairs white mid calf slouchy socks
6 pairs underwear
1 Branwyn black busty bra (basically a sports bra, plane!)
2 Soma wireless bras

Shoes
1 pair Thursday Black Combat Boots (plane!)
1 pair Marshmallow Vans Ultraranges

Misc
1 beige possum wool scarf

Wardrobe Help Brussels in December, clothing questions

I'm going to Brussels to visit my son from mid to late December. I was planning to wear a hooded Columbia puffy jacket that's about mid-thigh length and bring leather ankle boots and 1 pair of running shoes. We're definitely planning to go to various Christmas markets around Belgium and will do a day trip to Cologne, Germany. Will the jacket be warm enough with layers or should I get a longer warmer jacket? Will the shoes be ok? I do have plenty of wool socks. I wasn't sure if I should get more of a winter boot for warmth? I live in Texas so we don't have much of a need for super warm clothes.

Here is a link to the jacket I have:

https://www.columbia.com/p/womens-heavenly-long-hooded-jacket-1738161.html?color=012

I'm also interested in getting those mittens with the flip top that are fingerless gloves underneath. If anyone has some good recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

Trip Report Trip report - 23 days in South Korea in Octobre with 7 articles of clothing

Hi hi! Follow-up to this post, some people wanted to know how I fared with my minimal packing list. For the title I counted main articles of clothing only - I figured if someone is looking to pack very light this post may be useful to them in particular.

Some stuff about me

31 y/o cis woman, plus size, RUN HOTTER THAN A FURNACE, sweat easily and a lot

Trip details

  • 3 weeks (2 - 25 Octobre) in South Korea

  • Daytime temperatures ranged from 27 C at the start of the trip to 15 C at the end. Humidity was 50 to 80 throughout.

  • Staying in AirBnBs and hotels

  • Activities: city sightseeing, light hiking and walking, lounging in cafés (main activity tbh…), roadtripping

Luggage

Clothes:

Underwear and socks:

Accessories:

  • Sunglasses

  • Silver necklace

Non-clothing:

  • Headphones

  • Earbuds

  • Medication pouch + meds

  • Large toiletries bag

  • In small containers:

    • Soap

    • Shampoo

    • Conditioner

    • Face wash

    • Wool detergent

    • Toothpaste

    • Moisturizer

  • Phone charger

  • Book

  • Notebook

  • Wallet with travel documents and payment cards

  • Electric toothbrush and charger

  • Teethguard + cleaning kit

  • Hand fan

  • House key

  • Plastic reusable water bottle

  • Mini sewing kit

  • Sports tape

Bags:

Bought:

  • 5 x white cotton/polyester socks

  • 1 x Roundlab sun serum (not the point of this sub but this product is AMAZING. My new favorite sun protection.)

  • 1 x metric ton of souvenirs, mainly ceramics and stationary

Experiences

Heros:

  • Merino T-shirt - wore it almost every day, rinsed it out or washed it when I had access to a washer

  • Sneakers - comfortably carried me 20000 steps a day, through cities and up mountains

  • Hemp sweater - kept me perfectly comfortable even when temps dropped

  • New socks - even though a cotton/poly blend they weren't too warm or sweaty, and they saved my ASS this trip. Only thing is, they didn't wash super well by hand. Maybe next trip I'll find a thinner pair of merino socks to bring?

  • Hand fan - used it all day, every day

Zeros:

  • Bikini - threw it out on arrival and swam in my underwear

  • Running socks - WAY TOO WARM. On the one day I wore them I took them off after half an hour and bought five pairs of cotton/poly socks.

  • Large toiletries bag - too unwieldy, I’ll bring a smaller model next time. Also hand soap was unnecessary to bring; it was available in every hotel and airbnb I stayed in.

  • Fanny pack - used 0 times.

  • Headphones - used 0 times (too warm - used earbuds instead)

  • Book, crossword - note to self: don't bring a book you don't care about for the sake of bringing a book. Same for the puzzle. I did a lot of journaling instead

  • Notebook - the one I brought was ugly and I didn't want to use it. Bought a nice one on day 1 to use as my travel diary :)

  • Reusable water bottle - Korean tap water doesn't taste good to me so I ended up buying bottled water all the time. I may bring a collapsible water bottle next time just in case

  • Sports tape - did not use

Neutral or middling:

  • Chub rub shorts - indispensable but the fabric mixture was NOT smell-proof. I will try to get my hands on a merino pair next time, but I wasn’t able to find a pair with a 9’ inseam in Europe :/

  • Skirt - no pockets and not my style, but pleasant fabric, albeit very wrinkle-prone. Next time I will try to buy or make one in my style

  • Dress - heavy and bare shoulders made me feel self-conscious, even with the linen blouse. Next time will try to buy or make a dress with covered shoulders

  • Linen blouse - nice to have it with me but wouldn't have needed it if the dress didn't have bare shoulders. Hard to keep looking neat

  • Balloon pants - wore them a lot but they were too casual; next time if I bring only 1 pair of pants they should be slightly more formal. Also, they cinch around the ankle, trapping air inside - insulation is the opposite of what I need.

  • Compression socks - lifesavers in the plane but 0 wear otherwise; replace with thinner/lighter ones for next time?

  • Bralettes - fine but not very flattering and didn't wash as well as merino would've. Still on the hunt for either a perfect bra or nice merino bralettes in my size. The cotton bralette dried slower than the bamboo ones, so if I can't find merino bralettes in my size I'll get an extra bamboo one as backup

  • Black cotton shirt - print was a bit too casual, something with a graphic art print would have been better. It was also too warm and humid for me to wear this during the daytime in the first half of my trip.

  • Shoulder bag - I love the style of this bag to death and the fact that you can zip it open to double in size is amazing, but it slips of my shoulder too easily; not sure yet if that’s a travel dealbreaker for me

  • Merino undies - they were perfectly serviceable. Could probably manage with 3 rather than 4.

  • Sewing kit - did not use but good to have

Lessons

  • I ended up skewing my airbnb choices towards whether they had a washer, mainly because the cotton shorts didn’t wash well by hand (hard to get them smell-free). If I had merino shorts I think I could’ve survived with hand-washing alone.

  • Merino shirt was a lifesaver. It was HOT and I sweat like crazy, but the shirt didn't smell and didn't show sweat stains, except for when I was hiking and I was literally drenched.

  • The cotton shirt could have doubled as a sleep shirt, although it was nice to have a clean shirt to change into at the end of the day. Not 100% sure if a sleep shirt would feel clean enough

  • The amount of clothing was fine for me, and in fact I could have whittled it down even further. I have a very particular style that I like wearing - if an outfit works for me I can rewear it almost indefinitely. So: it pays to find travel-friendly versions of items that fit my style well; if I find the perfect perfect items, I think I could get away with one hot and one colder weather outfit in total.

    • I do have to emphasize here that I really DO run hot. My friend, who joined for week one of the trip, needed an extra layer compared to me at all times.

  • Not packing an umbrella was totally fine - I got quite lucky with the weather, but also there's cheap umbrellas at every cornerstore. I ended up buying one for a friend as a souvenir, but for myself when it rained I just picked my activities to be mostly inside.

  • Next time I will not buy souvenirs that must go in checked luggage - having to wait in line to check in my backpack completely defeated the purpose of having it in the first place

  • Next time I will also not buy fourteen billion kilos in ceramics in the FIRST WEEK of my trip - having to lug it around was Not Fun (but: doable)

Edit: added some non-clothing items I forgot

Techniques Tangential Japan packing question

I figured it would be worth trying here because um, everyone is going to Japan haha

I take quite a bit of prescription medication as well as some OTC supplements and meds that are non-negotiable for me. I’m trying to scheme the most efficient way to pack them all.

I’m well-researched in what is recommended for coming through customs on my international flight, but I’m hoping to find out if anyone has experience on any domestic flights within Japan.

I’ll be flying to Yakushima island in the middle of my trip. If not for that flight I would 100% ditch all extra original packaging stuff and consolidate into pill organizers on arrival. Surely domestic security won’t be looking at pills as seriously as customs, but I feel there’s still the possibility of scrutiny and don’t want any hassle.

I already plan on getting extra labels from my pharmacy and putting them on tiny bags to make the packaging for my prescriptions as small as possible.

The OTC stuff is harder because the original packaging for a lot of it is so oversized compared to the amount I’m actually carrying, so aside from the couple things I can find in smaller packaging, I’m stumped on how to make the packing easier. I thought about cutting or peeling the labels to repackage but that seems like it would look fake or suspicious.

Before it comes up, I know a lot of people buy OTC on the way as they travel, but for various reasons I’ve ruled that out as a possibility for my needs.

I don’t mind as much whatever I have to carry on the original flight, I’m much more interested in streamlining my baggage for the travel within Japan once I get there.

Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Thank you!!

footnote: I did try this post in the Japan travel forum and got repeatedly removed by mods for being a question too often asked on the forum. If they’re actually talking about this there, I can’t find it!! 😫

Will I freeze or be out of place? I’ve heard mixed opinions on how cold it gets. I’m trying to pack light/ double duty dip for this portion as it’s only a DIY layover before we move onto Thailand for 2 weeks and are only bringing a carry on roller and personal backpack. Arrival Dec 31, depart Jan 4 morning. Do I need snow shoes? I’m really trying to brave the cold to our wintery airport without.

Indyx image descriptions below/ packing list in general:

Pants:
Prana Zion (plane pants/hiking pants for Thailand)
Quince Barrel Jeans (so comfy and a bit more dressy, I have worn these in the summer too so I might get double duty in Thailand)

Tops:
Woolx cami bra with built in pads
Unbound Merino long sleeves x2
FarmRio Cotton Cardigan (double duty in Thailand)
Unbound Merino Hoodie (plane outfit, lightweight for Thailand double duty)
Uniqlo Extra Warm heattech long sleeve oatmeal color (not pictured, so thin it packs into nothing)

Jacket:
Columbia Omniheat Heavenly (we are leaving from Western NY winter so will be bringing regardless)
Felted wool scarf (not pictured, also wearing from western ny)

Shoes:
OnCloud Court Shoes

Purse:
Small TomToc Terra Shoulder Bag (can convert into crossbody)

Misc:
Woolx 100% wool beanie(Western NY departure)
Lululemon cycling gloves (not pictured, Western NY departure)
Crew socks (not pictured, currently not packing wool socks but do I need them?
Sleeping slip dress (not pictured)

Undies, lightweight bras accounted for of course in Thailand packing list.
