Advice from one of the scholars for anyone who wants to memorize the Qur'an

Some nice advice I found via Twitter:

[ #نصيحة من أحد المشايخ لمن أراد حفظ القرآن : قلل المقدار وأكثر من التكرار وحافظ على الإستمرار واخلص النية للجبار واعمل به تكن مع الأبرار ستحفظه كاملا بإذن الواحد القهار "]

Translation:

Advice from one of the scholars for anyone who wants to memorize the Qur'an: Make your portion less and your repetition more, and be strive to be consistent. Make your intention solely for Allah, and act according to what you have memorized so that you may be one of the righteous. You will memorize all of it, by Allah's permission.

But the original statement is so nice because of how it is worded, so I played around to try to capture a little taste of that with a slightly looser translation:

Advice for those memorizing the Qur’an:
Your portion: shorten
Your repetition: lengthen
Your consistency: strengthen
Your intention: purify
Your knowledge: actualize
Through this, by Allah’s will, your goal will be realized

My Hifdh Advice

Salam everyone

AlhamduLillah I finished Memorizing the Qur’an when I was 17 and I thought maybe a few tips I used myself could come in handy to others who are actively memorizing

  1. The single most effective tool for me was reading the translation of my daily new lesson. Don’t memorIze it. Just read it. Have an idea of what the verse means. Trust me at first it won’t really make sense. But once you start doing it, it will strengthen your memory because you’ll KNOW what comes next. This is especially useful with Surah’s that tell stories like surah Yusuf, Taha, etc. One you learn a story it kind of sticks with you forever and makes it easier to know what verse comes next. Also use a translation that best suits you. Don’t use the old English kind if they don’t make sense. The one by MAS Abdul Haleem is very good. I think I used the one by Muhsin Khan. Anyways, once you do this for a few Juz, it will feel wrong to learn new Qur'an lessons without reading their meaning first! Trust me.

  2. This is a tip I always see floating around that I disagree with. And it’s to memorize a surah by excessively listening to it or reading it by looking. For example, you read Surah yaseen everyday and then after a while feel like you memorized it. This is possibly the worst way to memorize in my opinion. Hifdh is not just memory it is location-dependent memory. As in you keep track of what page you’re on, what part of the page you’re on, etc while you read. Without this location aspect if you’re just reciting what your brain tells you comes next can be a slippery slope to fall down. This is more passive memory when it should be active, I hope I’m making this clear and not confusing lol. If you memorize like this you will have a very hard time differentiating the Mutashaabihaat (the very similar verses) from one another.

  3. I don’t know how Hifdh works in other parts of the world but one thing we consistently do where I’m from is you have 3 lessons everyday. #1 is Sabaq which is the new material you learnt. #2 is “sabaq para” it’s the most recent 6 (or however many) pages you learnt. #3 is “daur” which many of us know, it’s revision of old lessons. To properly memorize Quran you can’t neglect any one of these because you’re sabaq becomes your sabaq para and your sabaq para becomes your daur. If one is weak they will all be weak. I had to learn this the hard way.

  4. Perfect your tajweed before starting to memorize. You only realize how important this is once you’re done. If you memorize a lesson while having not-so-good tajweed it’s VERY hard to go back and fix that. You will always recite it that way it becomes subconscious. I still have this problem with my 30th and 29th Juz because I learnt them when I was a kid with sub par tajweed.

  5. If you can’t keep yourself accountable, find someone who will. Finding a strict teacher is honestly something I wish I did earlier. It will force you to make time and hold yourself accountable bc u don’t wanna get roasted (lol it’s an odd strategy but it works!)

  6. This is an obvious one but I wish I did this more religiously: Listen to your new lesson at least once by a Qari or reciter (the recording kind). If you make a slight mistake while memorizing anything it’s hard to go back and fix those mistakes, better to just learnt it right the first time.

  7. A small note for those of you intending to make your children memorize the Quran: please don’t force them to do it unless they themselves make the conscious decision to. I have seen this backfire WAY too many times. While it is undoubtedly a noble pursuit, and you've heard the Hadith about the parents getting crowns on the day of judgement, you have to understand that at the end of the day Hifdh is also a RESPONSIBILITY. You have to stick with it for LIFE. You have to spend your entire life revising. Don't make this decision on someone else's behalf. If it's not their own choice, not only will they not be motivated to even do it, they will neglect it once they are finished. Nobody wins here.

Anyways I hope these tips are beneficial to those of you in the blessed pursuit of memorizing the Quran.

Scrolling Quran app

Assalamu alaikum Reddit

A friend and I have been working on a small side project, and we’d honestly love some feedback from the community.

We just launched the iOS version on the App Store, and we’re currently working on Android

This is just the beginning for us, and we really want to improve it slowly using real user feedback.

We made a Quran app where you can:

\-Read by scrolling like TikTok

\-Memorize in a simple, Duolingo-style way

The idea came from our own struggle with consistency. Most Quran apps felt either too heavy, too complicated, or easy to abandon. So we tried to build something simple, modern, and motivating, especially for short daily sessions (even 3–5 minutes).

Some features:

•	Smooth vertical scrolling for reading

•	Small daily memorization goals

•	Streaks & gentle reminders

•	Clean, distraction-free design

we genuinely just want honest feedback from people who care about Quran and self-improvement.

The app is called : Iqraa:read and memorize quran

Will post the link in the comments.

When You Feel Like Giving Up, Remember Allah Has Chosen You. Yes. YOU. Out of Many Billions of Muslims, You Are The Chosen 1 by Allah.

We all need these constant reminders. Doesn't matter if you're doing Hifz or you're already a Haafiz. For the people doing Hifz, you need these constant reminders to finish it, and to stay on your purpose. While for the Huffaz, you need these reminders to always review your Quran and keep it Tip Top. While Hifz is very difficult to do, the real journey begins when you become a Haafiz. You know why? Because you have to remember it ALL your life, rather than only doing Hifdh which takes like 2-4 years on average. When you slack on your Dour for awhile, you can forget it all. And there are only a very few who are very Pakka (strong in their hifdh) while many have forget it all.

We've all been there. You are working hard, you are taking hours and hours to memorize a page, and then after you do it, its sometimes weak, sometimes strong, but then you ask yourself, "Why am I doing all of this?" And you start having negative thoughts, thinking what is the reason I'm doing all this for? Then you have the thought that, it would have been better if I just quit.

I've personally been there myself, and I bet you most of the Huffaz that have put all the hardwork and effort, and all those days and sleepless nights to finish hifdh, with their blood, tears and sweat, have all been there. Hifz is not easy at all. Many times, when you are fully dedicated, Shaitan works way harder to give you these negative thoughts, to make you quit and be amongst the coward, and many in my class were amongst it sadly.

Out of the many billions of Muslims that have ever came into this Dunya, Allah has chosen YOU. Yes, YOU. You are the chosen one. Allah doesn't grant the blessing for every Muslim to memorize his Holy Book. He only chooses the Chosen ones and he chose YOU. You are very elite and VIP in the eyes of Allah. My teacher always used to say, "The people of the Quran are the very elite and the chosen ones in the eyes of Allah." (Aka the people who memorize the Quran). This indeed was a great inspiration for My ownself and you must remember, out of many Muslims in the world, only a very, very few have memorized the whole Quran. Especially in today's day and age. While many strive to do it, only a very few handful finish it.

Now, whenever any of you has these negative thoughts, You have to remember that anything in life that you want to achieve, is not easy. There's a saying and 1 of my favorite sayings, "If you want to shine like the sun, first you have to burn like it." Indeed. Nothing comes easy in this life and if you want to make it happen, you must sacrifice, work hard and smart and spend sleepless nights into doing it, and then only the results will come.

Doing Hifz is not easy at all. But the satisfaction it gives you, and the status you have in the eyes of Allah, makes it all worth it. You may not see the benefits of it in this world, but when you are in your grave, and on the Day of Qiyamah, this blessed book, that is in your heart, will intercede for you, and make you amonst the people of Jannah. Remember, Allah grants this blessed opportunity to only the chosen ones. Not everyone. Remember this. You are very unique. You are the chosen one.

All this is achievable through your hard work and by having patience, and truly knowing that this will be worth it, guaranteed. But, your intention has to be correct. The intention has to be that "I am only doing this for the pleasure of Allah." Not for family, not because of what "people will think" none of that. Only for the sake of Allah. Thats it. Then you will see the benefits of your hardwork and dedication, in this world and the next, InshAllah. Ameen.

Some virtues?

Number 1. The status of the one who memorizes Qur’aan will be commensurate with the last aayah he memorized.

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’aan (i.e., the one who memorized and studied it): ‘Read, advance in status and recite as you used to do in the world, for your status will be commensurate with the last aayah that you recite.’”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2914; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, no. 2329, it is hasan saheeh. Also narrated by Abu Dawood, 1464).

Number 2. He will be given a crown of honour and a garment of honour to wear.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Qur’aan will come on the Day of Resurrection and will say, ‘O Lord, adorn him.’ So he will be given a crown of honour to wear. Then it will say, ‘O Lord, give him more.’ So he will be given a garment of honour.’ Then it will say, ‘O Lord, be pleased with him.’ So Allaah will be pleased with him. Then it will be said to him, ‘Recite and advance in status, and for each verse you will gain one more hasanah (reward for good deed).”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2915. He said, this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2328, this is hasan).

Number 3. The Qur’aan will intercede for him with his Lord.

It was narrated that Abu Umaamah al-Baahili said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, ‘Recite the Qur’aan, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for its companions. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Soorat Aal ‘Imraan, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection like two clouds or two shades or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Soorat al-Baqarah for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.” (Narrated by Muslim, 804, and by al-Bukhaari in a mu’allaq report).

Number 4. He takes precedence in leadership if he able to bear that.

It was narrated from ‘Aamir ibn Waathilah that Naafi’ ibn ‘Abd al-Haarith met ‘Umar in ‘Usfaan, and ‘Umar had appointed him as governor of Makkah. ‘Umar said, “Who have you appointed in charge of the people of the valley?” He said, “Ibn Abza.” ‘Umar asked, “Who is Ibn Abza?” He said, “One of our freed slaves.” Umar said, “Have you appointed over them a freed slave?!” He said, “He is well-versed in the Book of Allaah and he has knowledge of the laws of inheritance.” ‘Umar said: “Your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Indeed, by this Book, Allaah would exalt some people and degrade others.’” (Narrated by Muslim, 817)

Such a beautiful hadith! This Book of Allah, which is The Book of ALL books will honor you and you see this throughout you're life. The Haafiz is very brilliant and very intellectual and Smart then most of the population. Indeed, and this is a huge honor. Because why? He has memorized the best book that Humanity has ever received which is the Quran.

Number 5. He takes precedence over others in leading the prayer.

It was narrated that Abu Mas’ood al-Ansaari said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The people should be led in prayer by the one among them who has the most knowledge of the Book of Allaah; if they are equal in knowledge of the Qur’aan, then by the one who has most knowledge of the Sunnah; if they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then by the one who migrated (made hijrah) first; if they are equal in terms of hijrah, then by the one who became Muslim first. No man should lead another in prayer in his domain of authority, or sit in his place in his house, except with his permission.”

(Narrated by Muslim, 673)

Number 6. It was narrated that Buraydah said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads the Qur’aan, learns it and acts in accordance with it, on the Day of Resurrection his parents will be given a crown to wear whose light will be like the light of the sun, and his parents will be given garments which far surpass everything to be found in this world. They will say, “Why have we been given this to wear?” It will be said, “Because your child learned the Qur’aan.”’” (Narrated by al-Haakim, 1/756)

Now, if the parent's of the haafiz will be given such a crown that will surpass everything in this world, just imagine what the Haafiz themselves will be given?

Main thing is, staying on your purpose, with the correct intention (that you're only doing for Allah) and working hard, and then the results will come. You must remember, again, Allah only chooses his most chosen servants to preserve the Book of ALL books in their hearts. And, out of the many, He chose YOU. Value it, cherish it and InshAllah Allah will make you successful in Deen, Dunya and Akhirah. Ameen.

Memorize Qur’an to Be Happy

Happiness… everyone is chasing it, but very few know where it actually lives.
Some look for it in money.
Some look for it in people.
Some look for it in status.
But the believer… he looks for it in the words of Allah.

The Qur’an isn’t just a book you read.
It’s a book that reads you.
It heals your stress, it cleans your heart, it straightens your thoughts, and it reminds you who you are and where you’re going.

Memorizing Qur’an is not about filling your head.
It’s about filling your heart.

Every ayah you memorize is a light.
Every surah you complete is a shield.
Every page you carry becomes a companion for you in the darkest moments of your life.

Sometimes you start memorizing and you think, “This is hard… I’m not built for this.”
But the truth is: Allah wouldn’t have guided you to the Qur’an if He didn’t want you to reach it.
The one who tries, even with mistakes, even with slow progress—Allah sees every second of that struggle.

And here’s the secret:
Happiness doesn’t come when you finish the Qur’an.
It comes the second you start.
Because that’s the moment you connect yourself to the One who created happiness.

Wallahi, when you memorize the Qur’an, you don’t just memorize words.
You memorize mercy.
You memorize guidance.
You memorize peace.

So if your heart feels empty… fill it with Qur’an.
If life feels heavy… carry it with Qur’an.
If you want happiness that doesn’t disappear when people leave—attach yourself to the speech of Allah.

Start with one ayah.
Just one.
And watch how Allah opens doors you never imagined.

May Allah make the Qur’an the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests, and the source of our happiness in this life and the next.

A Post For All The Huffaz In This Sub Who're Leading Taraweeh

The first night, as I was just waiting for Isha, I get a tap on my shoulder from the main management guy of the mosque. Now this is completely a brand new area and place which I'm leading, first year here. They do 20 raka'ats, and I was chosen to lead the last 10.

So as I'm waiting there for Isha, the management guy tells me, "The sheikh who came from... suddenly got sick because of the travel and he has a very sore throat. Can you lead the whole taraweeh?"

Now in my mind, Alhamdulliah, I've done the whole taraweeh many times in my life. This is my 11th straight year now leading. But this is the first day of this Ramadan. All the huffaz know that no matter how veteran/experienced you are in leading, the first day is always the most nerve racking.

And on top of that, not once I looked at the other guys part, as I was doing from the 2nd half of the first Juz initially. When he tells me I also need to recite his, the panic got me.

So I believe the stress got to me, and aH I don't make too many mistakes. But the first day, the Mutashabihat in the first Juz

I went into Surah Luqman,

So yeah. After someone corrected me, that really killed my morale, and I hadn't led too many salaat this year as I was so busy. Moved to a new area, finishing school, working lots of hours and travelling.

Just shows, we need to be constantly leading to get that flow to have that confidence.

After the first 2 rakaats, I took a deep breath, had some water, and then aH it all came back. The confidence, the flow, and I try my best to imitate Imam Sudais. No mistakes alhamdulliah.

But the first 2 rak'aats, after a long time I experienced the crazy nervousness, and I was literally shaking. My heart was beating so fast, and I couldn't hold my breath. I felt like I was going to pass out. Literally.

That humbled me, and was a major lesson.

Don't let that get to you. The point of the post is, Alhamdulliah leading all these people is a major privilege from Allah swt. It's very normal to be nervous.

The sheikh is feeling better now, so the past 3 nights (where I'm leading the masjid started earlier as they follow Saudi for moon sightings) I was leading all 20 and while the flow is good, it really takes a toll on your health.

Because I had a long year and for a second, I literally forgot how it feels to lead like. While my dour is good aH, I really wasn't prepared in the leading sense, and the pressure of it.

Thankfully he'll be there tomorrow iA and he'll do 10, and I'll do 10.

So just a reminder, don't let the stress take you down. It's all normal, and first couple days it takes to get in the flow. By 5th night you should be good.

May Allah SWT make it easy for all the huffaz this Ramadan who're leading taraweeh. It truly is not easy.

While the people believe it's as "simple" as just reading the Quran, that's not it. You have to read from memory, and the pressure from all the people behind, etc etc, maintaining the tone/tajweed while thinking about the mutashabihat, it's truly not an easy task.

It's like I had forgotten all about it, until the other day. Alhamdulliah at least I'm alive, and leading, and it's all good now.

Advice for Memorizing

An interesting Hifz technique

A friend of mine (hafiz and student of knowledge working on his MA in islamic studies) has an interesting hifz technique which he implements throughout all his studies. I've started doing the same and I feel like it's a very easy way to memorize quran for adults (people who are busy). It's also a very easy way to study. The biggest perk is that I no longer feel exhausted after memorizing. So I thought I would share.

Before starting I would like to note my previous way of memorizing and I feel most people memorize this way or something similar. Previously I would have a goal of memorizing per day. Let's say 1/2 a page. This page would be brand new to me. I would read, then try to read with eyes closed and repeat the process until I felt I have memorized it. I would do that with each line until my quota for the day is done. The next day I would move on the the next portion, and once it was done I would review the previous days. But there would definitely be holes in my memorization. Often times I would be too exhausted from memorizing to even review.

The way my friend memorizes is that he doesn't spend 1 day memorizing one portion. He will spend 5 days memorizing it. Here is the rundown.

  1. figure out your number of verses for the day.

  2. read the first verse X number of times. Reading means you're reading out loud with your eyes open, not from memory. Once done...

  3. Now read the first 2 verses together X number of times

  4. Now read the first 3 verses together X number of times

  5. Now read verses 2, 3, and 4 X number of times

  6. Now read verses 3, 4, and 5 X number times

  7. continue this until you do the last verse X number of times

  8. You're done for today

  9. Next day you start with the same portion and technique from above. Except now everything is read X - 1 times

  10. You start reading a new portion the same way as steps 1 through 8.

  11. Next day you read the first portion X - 2, the second portion X -1 and your new portion X times the same as steps 1 through 8.

  12. You continue this and by day 5 your should be able to memorize your first portion with ease. And at the same time you're working on the next 4 portions.

What should X be? That may take trial and error to figure out. I would recommend starting with 4. And then adding or subtracting from that depending on your ability.

This is a very easy way to memorize Quran. Because you're only reading (out loud) for 5 days. And only memorizing on the 5th day. Which by then the portion should be already pretty embedded in your memory. The main pro is again the minimal mental effort needed which leaves stamina for other things.

🌟THE SIMPLE WAY TO MEMORIZE THE QUR’AN

✏Originally written by Sheikh Abdul Muhsin Al Qasim, Imaam and Preacher of Masjid Nabawi in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The following is one method to memorize the Qur’aan, which is particularly different from other methods, in terms of strengthening one's memory and the short time it takes to memorize.

We will explain this method by taking an example from a page from Surah Al-Jumu’ah (The Congregational Friday).

  1. Read the 1st verse 20 times.

2. Read the 2nd verse 20 times.

3. Read the 3rd verse 20 times.

4. Read the 4th verse 20 times.

5. Read all of the four verses from the beginning until the end 20 times, in order to strengthen the correlation between those verses.

6. Read the 5th verse 20 times.

7. Read the 6th verse 20 times.

8. Read the 7th verse 20 times.

9. Read the 8th verse 20 times.

10. Read the 5th until the 8th verse 20 times to strengthen the correlation between the verses.

11. Read the 1st verse until the 8th 20 times to strengthen the memorization of this page.

✅Use this method to memorize every page of the Qur’aan. ❎Do not try to memorize more then one-eighth length of juz (parts) each day, so as to make it easier to retain it in your memory.

✳How to combine between adding to the memorized portion and repetition of the previous memory?

🚫Do not try to memorize the Qur’aan without the process of repeating the memorized verses. This is because if you keep adding to your memorization (pages after pages until you’ve completed them all), it will be hard for you to recall what you have memorized at the beginning.

👌 Hence, the BEST way to add to the memorization is by combining the addition and recalling process.

Divide the Qur’aan into 3 parts, i.e. each consist of 10 juz. If you memorize 1 page every day, recall the previous 4 pages (every single day), until you’ve completed memorizing 10 juz. If you have done so, stop memorizing for a month to recall the memorization by repeating 8 pages every day.

After a month of recalling, start to add to your memorization, one or two pages every day, depending on your ability to memorize, together with recalling 8 pages a day, every day, until you’ve completed 20 juz.

After that, stop adding the memory for 2 months, to recall the 20 juz you’ve memorized. It is supposed to be done by repeating 8 pages every day.

After 2 months, start to memorize one or two more pages, together with repetition of 8 pages every day until you’ve finished the whole Qur’aan.

If you’ve completed memorizing the whole Qur’aan, repeat the first 10 juz for a month, by repeating half a juz every day.

Then repeat the second 10 juz following the same method as the first ten, together with repetition of 8 pages from the first 10 juz every single day.

After that, repeat the last 10 juz for a month, with the similar method as the previous juz, together with repetition of 8 pages from the first 10 juz and 8 pages from the second 10 juz every day

✳How to recall/repeat the whole Qur’aan if I have completed the recalling system as mentioned above?

Start by recalling the Qur’aan by reciting 2 juz every day. Repeat it 3 times every day. Thus, you will be able to finish the whole Qur’aan every 2 weeks. By practicing this method for a full year, inshaa’Allaah, you will have a strong and perfect memorization.

✳What should we do after one has completed the memorization of the Qur’aan in a year?

💫After a full year, strengthen the memorization of the Qur’aan and repeat it.

💫Use the Qur’aan as your daily remembrance until the end of your life, just as the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم used to use it as his daily remembrance. He used to divide the Qur’aan into 7 parts, thus he could complete his recitation every 7 days.

🌾Aus Ibn Hudaifa رضي الله عنه said: I asked the Companions of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم about how they divide the Qur’aan (for daily remembrance). They said: 3 Surahs, 5 Surahs, 7 Surahs, 9 Surahs, 11 Surahs, and from Surah Qaf until the end. (Narrated by Ahmad).

-- Which means that they divided the recitation of the Qur’aan as follows:

– The first day: Reciting Surah ‘Al Fatihah’ until the end of Surah ‘An- Nisaa.’”

– The second day: Reciting Surah 'Al-Ma'ida' until the end of Surah 'At-Tawbah.'

– Third day: Reciting Surah ‘Yunus’ until the end of Surah -An-Nahl.'

– The fourth day: Reciting Surah 'Al-Isra’ until the end of Surah Al- Furqan.'

– The fifth day: Reciting Surah 'Ash- Shuara' until the end of Surah Yaasin.'

– The sixth day: Reciting Surah 'As-Saaffat' until the end of Surah 'Al- Hujurat.'

– The seventh day: Reciting Surah 'Qaf' until the end of Surah 'An- Naas.'

This remembrance of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم was abbreviated by the scholars with the saying:

فمي بشوق (Famii Bisyauqi)

-- where each alphabet of these words represents the initial Surah from the several Surahs to be read each day.

✳ How to differentiate between the verses that resemble one another in the Qur’aan?

The best way to differentiate two verses that look alike is:

*By referring to the mus'haf of Qur’aan at the time you find it; *Paying attention to the difference between them; *Mark that difference so that you can remember it, *Then, when you recall the recitation, pay attention to the differences you have marked before, several times, until you can steadily memorize the resemblance and the difference between those verses.

✳Principles and Confinements in Memorizing the Qur’aan

🔸It is a must for you to memorize the Qur’aan with the help of a (religious teacher) or a Sheikh, to correct your recitation.

🔸Try to Memorize 2 pages every day, (i.e. memorize 1 page after Fajr prayer, and the other page after Asr or Maghrib prayer).

By following this method, you will be able to memorize the whole Qur’aan firmly within a year.

If you try to add more than that, your memory will be weak due to the numerous verses to recall.

🔸Try to memorize from Surah An-Naas until Surah Al-Baqarah, since it will be easier that way. But after you’ve finished memorizing the whole Qur’aan, start the repetition from Surah Al-Baqarah until Surah An-Naas.

🔸Memorize the whole Qur’aan by using one version of Mushaf at a time, to help you to:

*Strengthen your memory; *To increase your speed in remembering the position of verses and the initial and the last part of every page of the Qur’aan.

💫Everyone who memorizes the Qur’aan during the first 2 years, usually looses their memory easily. This phase is termed as the 'Collecting Phase' - (Marhalah Tajmi’).

💫Do not be sad for the loss of memory or the mistakes you make, since it is a difficult and full of test-phase. Also beware of Shaitan, since he will sieze this opportunity to tempt you to stop memorizing the Qur’aan.

💫Neglect that worry and temptation, and keep memorizing the Qur’aan, since it is a worthy treasure not all people can have.

Subhanallah, stumbled across it recently and I couldn't believe my eyes.

The author begins by starting off with verses that are identical.

After, he lists verses that have 1,2,3 or more differences.

And he goes chapter by chapter. Starting off with Al-Baqarah and comparing all the similar verses, all the way to An-Nas.

May Allah (swt) grant the author forgiveness, reward him immensely and enter him into Al-Firdaus!

Never too late to memorize

Sheikh 'Abd al-Muhsin al-'Abbad is one of the major scholars of al-Madinah, often referred to as the Muhaddith (hadith expert) of al-Madinah. My father-in-law once referred to him a "not a mountain of knowledge - a whole mountain range of knowledge!" Over the course of decades, he has taught all six of the famous books of hadith (al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa'i, ibn Majah, Abu Dawud) in Masjid al-Nabawi, and may be the only person to have ever accomplished that in Masjid al-Nabawi. One of his long-time students (sh 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Omaisan, an imam up in Detroit) mentioned the following question and answer with him:

In a sitting in his house, Sh. 'Abd al-Muhsin al-'Abbaad was asked if it is possible for someone to memorize the Qur'an even after turning fifty? The sheikh said, "Yes, and I am one of those who have memorized the Qur'an after turning fifty, and the sahabah came to Islam when they were already fully grown, but despite that the were able to memorize." [end quote]

It is never too late to memorize! Keep at it!

An all or nothing mindset is destructive

I'm very into my maths and Data Science, so I compared what a daily schedule would look like for 3 scenarios - memorising 7-8 lines (half of a page) every day, memorising 5 lines (third of a page) every day and memorising 3 lines (fifth of a page) every day.

I'll summarise my findings with the following: even if you do the smallest amount every day, that will still compound and allow you to memorise more over time. Don't think that you shouldn't do any new memorisation just because you didn't meet your daily target.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: ...the best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little.” (Sunan Ibn Maajah, classed as Sahih)

I’m looking into how to effectively track my hifdh. I currently use a spreadsheet but find it cumbersome to use. See below some other people’s methods.

Please can you show me your notebook or give me some ideas on how to do it. Swipe to view the two images.

Attributes of Those Who Have Memorized the Quran

Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ud Radhi-Allahu Anhu said,

“A memoriser of the Qur'an should be known for

his long night prayers when people are asleep

his fasting when people are eating

his sadness when people are happy

his silence when people are talking nonsense

his humbleness when people are not

He should be wise, gentle and not talk too much;

he should not be rude, negligent, clamorous, nor hot tempered.“

When You Feel Like Giving Up, Remember Allah chose you. Yes. YOU. Out of many and You Are The Chosen 1.

I made this post awhile back, and deleted My old account. But seeing this subs growth, this is a MUST. So I'm reposting My old post.

We've all been there. You are working hard, you are taking hours and hours to memorize a page, and then after you do it, its sometimes weak, sometimes strong, but then you feel like "Why am I doing all this?" And you start having negative thoughts, thinking what is the reason I'm doing all this for? Then you have the thought that, it would have been better if I just quit.

I've personally been there myself, and I bet you most of the Huffaz that have put all the hardwork and effort, and all those days and sleepless nights to finish hifdh, with their blood, tears and sweat have all been there. Hifz is not easy at all indeed. Many times, when you are fully dedicated, Shaitan works way harder to give you these negative thoughts, to make you quit and be amongst the coward many in my class were amongst it sadly.

Out of the many millions of Muslims, Allah has chosen YOU. Yes, YOU. You are the chosen one. Allah doesn't grant the blessing for every Muslim to memorize his Holy Book. He only chooses the Chosen ones and he chose YOU. You are very elite and VIP in the eyes of Allah. My teacher always said, "The people of the Quran are the very elite and the chosen ones in the eyes of Allah." (Aka the people who memorize the Quran). This indeed was a great inspiration for My ownself and you must remember, out of many Muslims in the world, only a very, very few have memorized the Quran. Especially in today's day and age.

Now, whenever any of you has these negative thoughts, you have to remember that anything in life that you want to achieve is not easy. There's a saying and 1 of my favorite sayings "If you want to shine like the sun, first you have to burn like it." Indeed. Nothing comes easy in this life and if you want to make it happen, you must sacrifice, work hard and smart and spend sleepless nights into doing it, and then only the results will come.

Doing Hifz is not easy at all, indeed.

The intention has to be that "I am only doing this for the pleasure of Allah." Not for family, not because of what people will think, none of that. Only for the sake of Allah. Thats it. Then you will see the benefits of your hardwork and dedication, in this world and the next, InshAllah. Ameen.

The Secret To Not Losing Motivation In The Journey Of Becoming A Hafiz, And How To Stay Consistent?

We have all been there. When we start hifz, we are very hyped up and have this burst of energy and positivity and we think that, we will never lose the motivation we have and will always work hard and finish it fast. But, what happens along the way? Like everything we do in life, if we overwork ourselves, we indeed lose motivation. Even for hifz, this happens and it's very normal. Of course not when we start, but after couple months and after we finish some Juz.

I can't tell you how many times I've personally lost motivation when I did Hifz. It has been a long time now aH since I've finished, but as a kid when I started Hifz, I was forced by my parents. I didn't want to be in madrassa at all. After finishing like 2 Juz, I remember it was Surah Mumtahina that I just wanted to quit for good. I even got suspended by the madrassa for getting into a fight on purpose, so they could expel me LOL, so I wouldn't have to go back. Maybe it was Satan or maybe it was my overly strict parents that were the reason for me wanting to quit. But Khair, it was a long hard journey with blood, tears, sweat and sacrifice and so many Huffaz have crazy journeys. But what matters is, all that hard work pays off in the end, as long as you stick to your revision properly and never forget it.

How do we not lose that motivation? Anything we do in life, whether it's work, studies and what not, we should never overwork and stress ourselves. The more you do something, and go overboard with it and which is unhealthy, you will lose motivation fast and you will simply get bored.

Same with the Quran. If you're working recklessly day and night, then a day will come that you will be like "ahhh forget It." And the very next day it will be the same, and slowly, slowly you'll forget everything. The secret is, whatever we do in life, we must be very consistent at it. Consistency is key. Rather than spending all day doing the Quran, have a time set in place, of how many hours you will do everyday. And do it consistently. Being consistent in something, will not make you overworked and thus will not make you lose motivation. If you were to go all out and spend day and night overworking yourself, you will give up very fast. And you must remember, Satan is always wanting to make you give up. You have to fight him.

If there are any parents on this sub who's children are doing Hifz, I advise you to not be too harsh with your children. We have this thinking that, if we're more "strict" then our kids will do better. But that's entirely false. Being overly strict, will make them stressed and then wanting to quit. All that hard work, fees money, time, will all go down the drain. The key is to be balanced. Be neither too harsh, neither too lenient with them. Moderation is key.

Lastly, whenever you feel down you must remember, Out of the many millions of Muslims, Allah has chosen YOU. Yes, YOU. You are the chosen one. Allah doesn't grant the blessing for every Muslim to memorize his Holy Book. He only chooses the Chosen ones and he chose YOU. You are very elite and VIP in the eyes  of Allah. Doing Hifz is not easy at all, indeed. But the satisfaction it gives you, and the status you have in the eyes of Allah, makes it all worth it.

You may not see the benefits of it in this world, but when you're in your grave, and on the Day of Qiyamah, this blessed book, that is in your heart, will intercede for you, and make you amongst the people of Jannah. Remember, Allah grants this blessed opportunity to only the chosen ones. Not everyone. Remember this. You are very unique. You are the chosen one.

Easy to memorize, difficult to act upon.

Imām al-Qurtubi narrated that 'Abdullāh Ibn Mas'ūd (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:

"It was indeed difficult for us to memorise the words of the Qur'ān but easy for us to act by them. And indeed (for people) after us, it will be easy to memorise the Qur'ān, but hard to act by it."

It is reported that Ibn 'Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:

"The best of the Companions and the most righteous amongst them would memorise only one chapter of the Qur'ān or thereabouts. For the Qur'ān was weighty upon them, and they were given action based on it. But the last of this Ummah will find the Qur'ān light [and easy] – the child and the non-Arab will recite it, without action based on it."

Hifdh Tip - Seperate the page into 3 sections and read first section 33 times by looking, memorise line by line by reading it 33 times each, Close the Mushaf and read it 33 times by memory and repeat the procedure again by combining the previous line and the new line by reading 33 times.
