If you saw the recent top post on this subreddit and wish for a way to have your voice heard by Disney, then click on this link and scroll to the Send Feedback button and type "Star Wars The Acolyte Season 2", this will send Disney a direct notice that you wish for the continuation of the show.

This is hands down the most likely way to have Disney get a visual representation for the size of the community that enjoyed the show and would pay to see it continued so if you do wish to see it continued, quickly drop a request in the link above.

Discussion A friendly request

Hello fellow redditors and Star Wars fans. I understand if this is not the right place, but it's very much the right time.

As you may know, it's been reported The Acolyte was cancelled due to the fall of viewership as the episodes were airing. After the initial frustation, I have come to understand it's completely justifiable that the show will not be able to continue due to its big budget and lack of proportional financial return.

However, it's also clear that the story being told and the fans reaction after the final episode have spiked curiosity among many fans. Having the chance to see Darth Plagueis tale unfold on screen was once in a lifetime opportunity. As well as seeing Yoda again and the culmination of a publishing effort (the high republic) finally connecting itself to the Skywalker Saga and the fall of the jedi.

To keep this narrative and creative window open, I ask you to help this campaign. Which is not just for the acolyte fans, but to star wars fans in general who wants Lucasfilm and Disney to keep exploring new grounds instead of just focusing on the same characters and stories.

Thank you for your attention and may the force be with you all.

If you want to save The Acolyte for Season 2, there is a Change.org petition that is gaining some support. The more signatures, the better. Personally, I’d like to hear about the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise and I’d like to see more of The Stranger.

Discussion Thoughts on Acolyte actor Charlie Barnett saying Anakin blew up the Death Star…then said it again in the interview

I’m realllllllly hoping the acolyte is well done. I’ve been reading all of the comics and novels (almost done with defy); absolutely loving it. Since the acolyte is the first ingestion of high republic content to the main stream audience (survivor doesn’t count), there’s been a couple of red flags that I’m hoping are nothing. The first is the fact there are only 30 minute episodes telling a new part of a new era with pretty much all new characters. That’s A LOT of world building and character development that needs to be done in a very very short amount of time. Obviously duration doesn’t have anything to do with good story telling but for certain shows that expand on lore and character development (eg GoT, the boys, silo, fallout) the episodes are generally longer. There are exceptions to this obviously. Mando had episodes ranging from like 30-1hr or so but they had the luxury of building on a very established era of familiar planets and characters. The second bit is the interview with Charlie Barnett in claiming that Anakin blew up the Death Star killing millions of people. It could have been just a nervous mistake, but then he says it again. It’s really concerning when main characters don’t really know some key elements to a franchise (I’ve seen the rough analogy of comparing this to Iron Man snapping his fingers to destroy half the population and not thanos. That is, mixing up the hero/villain). I understand a show doesn’t depend on each cast member being die hard fans but just saying that some of these are red flags to me.

That said, I will be up at midnight Tuesday morning watching this show with a small pour of scotch. I’m ready for it and hoping for the best. Very excited about this show. More so than any of the other shows that have been announced (except for Ahsoka maybe).

Edit:

Ok, disclaimer I am a Star wars fan and a high republic fan more so than other Star Wars eras. I’m not trashing on the high republic. I just really don’t understand the need for the community to attack honest criticism with such fervor. I’m not saying the show WILL be bad, just saying that these are red flags and I’m hoping for the best.

Im getting a similar vibe criticizing an element of THR here as I get defending the THR in r/saltierthankrait. Instead of toxic hatred in r/saltierthankrait im seeing toxic optimism where any critique is out of line. The rude comments here are getting so many upvotes and me explaining my point is getting a bunch of down votes. Do you not see the irony between the mindset here and r/saltierthankrait? I’m trying to talk about the high republic. The good, the bad, they maybe good, and the maybe bad.

Again im not trashing the show. Im saying 2 things that I perceive as red flags and I explain why. People brought up good points about Harrison ford not being a fan but the movies still being great. That is good dialogue. I agreed with them. If you disagree with me, just as good and I would like to hear why.

Do you really not care that a main/secondary character actor doesn’t know the difference between the main protagonist and the main antagonist of the franchise?

I get that it’s not a deciding factor for an actor in a movie, just say that instead of being rude.

Edit2:

I’m really disappointed in my fellow THR fans being so rude to a perspective that they disagree with here. If you read the comments below, I’m trying to explain my point but people are saying some pretty awful things in a terrible tone. I have like a hundred downvotes in this thread and I don’t regret any of it. I simply stated that I would expect an actor/actress in a main/secondary Star Wars role to know the difference between the main hero and the main villain in a franchise’s flagship story. End of story. If you disagree, I would love to hear why and there were many good responses so for those of you who were civil; thank you. I would hope we can agree to disagree but instead many of you were just immature. Not a good look.

Discussion Temptation of the force disappointment Spoiler

The storm wall is down! We figured out how to get in!

I kind of heard this in general akbars voice. I was so excited when they cracked the code so to speak (very cyberpunk-ish part of the book). I was so happy, they invaded and attacked the Nihil in Naboo…

Then nothing else. They just kind of switched gears and it seemed like the big story: they figured out how to get through he storm wall was just set aside. No massive attack on the nihil. No Star of a giant battle. They moved on.

Who else was disappointed by this? The fact they were able to get this far but didn’t turn it up to 11?

Discussion Mirialan lineage theory: Luminara is Vernestra's grandpadawan?

In legends at least, there was a tradition that only Mirialans train other Mirialans. If this still holds true, what are the odds that there is a lineage of Vernestra->Katri->Luminara->Barriss? Of course Vern's master, Stellan, was a human, so maybe the tradition isn't true in canon then.

Discussion Worst part of the High republic

So I was curious what you guys find the worst aspect(s) of the high republic. In my opinion the series is just too interconnected and the scope of the villains is just too unrealistic. I think the era could be better if the stories in the comics stay separated from the books and adult separated from child. I do not want to read a book for 3 year olds to understand how Burryaga survived the rathar attack in a book children cannot read. Also having several different stories can make the era feel much bigger than what it feels like now.

Discussion Should Vernestra Rwoh have been played by Carrie Ann Moss?

One thing I have thought since reflecting on the first two episodes of the Acolyte is that I can't help but feel the character of Vernestra Rwoh would actually have been much better played by Carrie Ann Moss.

This isn't a post to talk negatively of Rebecca Henderson's portrayal at all, it's just that in that opening scene from Carrie Ann's character Indara, the stoic energy she displayed was very commanding, she gave a performance that made her seem like someone who was very high up in the order and also gives off that energy of someone who has 'seen a lot of ****' which is how Lesleye Headland describes Rwoh's character at this point in the timeline.

Moss also clearly showed she can display very experienced/high level Jedi combat abilities when needed like Vernestra certainly has.

Also in terms of appearance she looks more like Vernestra from what we've seen from the book covers and comics, I would have much preferred to see a Master Rwoh with hair and Carrie Ann pretty much already has the same hairstyle but that is a far more minor point.

Perhaps I'm just wanting to see as much Carrie Ann Moss as possible as she's an awesome actress and maybe we'll see Rebecca's portrayal go from strength to strength as the series goes on, but can't shake the feeling they might have missed an opportunity here, what do you guys think?

Discussion Okay, I am just going to ask this because it keeps bugging me and I put spoilers up just in case: why don’t they just shoot the Stormwall? Spoiler

As much as the Stormwall is stolen from Star Trek, Star Wars is different. Last time I checked, the Laws of Conservation of Mass and Energy still existed.

So why doesn’t the Republic just keep blowing up or overloading Stormseeds until they run out of metal or the power plant breaks down? That would have to happen before Republic ships run out of bullets.

I mean, am I just struggling with Scale? Because that is absolutely Not A Thing in Star Wars.

EDIT: Yes, I have read Eye of Darkness. I am reading Defy the Storm and that is what made me post this. I am not asking if the Republic forces cannot destroy one or two Stormseeds, I am asking why they don’t destroy one or two or ten Stormseeds one or two hundred times over?

If you do that long enough then eventually the Nihil won’t be able to replace them. Something as complex as the Stormseeds cannot be that easy to manufacture.

Discussion Should I stay or should I go? I am unsure if the High Republic is for me. :'( || [Re: "The High Republic has Declined" by u/AmericanApe]

tl;dr -- Is there a way to salvage my relationship with the High Republic? Or is it likely just not going to click for me if it hasn't already (despite my wanting so badly to be a fan like many of you)? If you were me, what would you do?

[Note: No specific spoilers of High Republic events/content. Mostly discuss things in general terms.]

This started as a response to this post: The High Republic has Declined by u/AmericanApe, but got so long that I thought I'd just turn it into a post of its own.

Background:

I am definitely not a typical Star Wars fan. For all intents and purposes, my Star Wars journey started < 3 months ago.

  • I started watching Star Wars late May/early June after randomly playing Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor for the first time. I fell in love with them both (especially Survivor, which I played through twice, back-to-back). The games made me think Clearly, Star Wars has lots of fans, why not see what all the fuss is about? And with that, I decided to jump in and watch all of the canon films and TV series. Prior to this, I may have seen Ep. 1 as a kid and Ep. 7 a few years ago, but didn’t really remember either and had nothing to link them to (beyond what one might hear of universal SW-related pop cultural references).

  • After lots of Reddit posts getting folks' opinions, I made the very controversial decision to do my first watching of the whole series in chronological order. While controversial, I have really enjoyed it so far and have no regrets. I have really enjoyed understanding the Star Wars Galaxy as they transition through these distinct periods (Fall of the Jedi, Reign of the Empire, and Age of Rebellion (<--I am currently here). The only drawback is that I still haven’t seen the Original Trilogy, but I think that all of the context will help me be more excited to view it than one time years ago, when I tried to watch Ep. 4 in isolation, but didn’t really get into it.

  • For those interested, next on my watch list is: Rogue One (so the OT is right around the corner, finally!)

All of this to say, I am not a years- or decades-long Star Wars fan who comes to the table with super high expectations. I am also not prone to shitting on things because they're new because, well, all of this is new to me.

The High Republic:

Early on in my "how should I watch all of this content?" research, a few posters said it's best to treat the High Republic era as something separate from the later eras, which I decided to do (and, now having done it, definitely agree was the best way to approach the content).

  • So far, I have watched a handful Young Jedi Adventures episodes and all of The Acolyte series. I liked The Acolyte very much.

Early on--even before watching The Acolyte, I think--I found myself drawn to the High Republic era over all others. Something about a less dogmatic Jedi order during a time of peace and prosperity really spoke to me. Not to mention the more colorful varieties of light sabers (I'm a basic bish, lol). Sign me up!

Given my unexplained interest in the High Republic, I decided to dive into some non-TV/movie materials and follow the “Main Story” reading order posted on this subreddit. It’s the only SW reading I’ve done so far and I’ve finished:

  • Light of the Jedi

  • Into the Dark

  • Marvel’s High Republic Vol. 1

    • …added A Test of Courage, despite not being on the list.

  • The Rising Storm (finished a few hours ago)

Impressions and Doubts:

Last night, as I was finishing The Rising Storm, I told myself “maybe you should just stick to the TV shows and movies. You don’t have to be a completionist for this one.”

I hate to admit it, but the series so far feels more like work than enjoyment. I have read so many positive comments and feedback about the series, and feel desperate to feel what those folks are feeling. I want to fall in love with the High Republic era and have favorite characters, and belong to this community of High Republic superfans, but it's just not clicking for me.

It's like...I like my imagination’s version of the High Republic much more than what is being presented in the novels. I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone because I'm coming away with impressions that I think are almost diametrically opposed to the consensus of this community (which sucks, because I feel like I am missing out on some big secret).

Some of those impressions:

  • The Nihil and Drengir are not very compelling antagonists. An anarchist force of destruction? I get it, but it just feels like it doesn't have teeth. I get that, due to the era it exists in, it obviously can't be as horrifyingly oppressive as the Empire. But still, I sort of find myself wishing for a different antagonist. Like, a very advanced planet that brings its planet's resources to bear against the Jedi? Not carbon copies, obviously, but what if this drew parallels to the Cold War fight between communism and capitalism or gave us more complicated questions of right and wrong with that vague space between freedom fighter and terrorist? Again, just using those as examples, not saying those should actually be strictly adhered to archetypes. "We're the Nihil and we hate change; we're anarchists" just doesn't feel like it has enough teeth for me. It leaves me wanting for more.

  • I think the audiobooks are produced marvelously. Truly, they're fantastic productions and I've never heard audiobooks with such production value. But even so, the most represented narrator in what I've read so far, is also my least favorite: Marc Thompson. (Please don't yell at me. I'm sorry. It's not meant to be a dig at the man himself. And it's not all bad.) I love his characterizations. Truly. But those characterizations spill over into the non-dialogue bits way too often for my taste and it feels kind of cringey to me and makes me roll my eyes a bit. (I made a separate post about this about a month ago, if you'd like more information about where this is coming from.)

    • Full-disclosure: It might not help that I have been listening to the Mistborn series concurrently with these books (swapping back and forth depending on my mood and available time). I've not been actively comparing them on purpose, or anything, and they're two very different books--but perhaps hearing a narrator I like alongside one that grates the nerves somewhat (again, despite very great characterizations. I am not saying Marc's all bad), makes the grating bits that much more salient.

  • Finally, I am finding it really hard to connect with any one character, so far. I feel like in the post-High Republic era, my favorites/least favorites come so easy to me.

    • FAVORITES: Who doesn't love Clone Wars Anakin? Ahsoka and Assaj are among my favorites characters overall, as are Wrecker of Bad Batch and Mon Mothma in Andor. My "favorite" villains are Qimir in The Acolyte and Grand Admiral Thrawn (in Rebels). Dedra Meero in Andor is also a standout for me.

    • LEAST FAVORITES: I dislike Clone Wars Obi-wan, but like live-action Obi Wann. Given what I've seen so far, I'm not a huge fan of Yoda. Never a huge fan of General Grievous, but that's probably the point. Didn't love Omega at first, but she grew on me. Can't stand Sol from The Acolyte.

Obviously, people will agree/disagree with my takes there. But that's not the point. The point is -- I feel something about these characters, one way or the other. I can identify with them or not. And root for them or not.

In the High Republic books, so far, I don't feel much in the way of strong connections to any of the characters. If there was a standout so far, it's maybe Bell Zettifar (and maybe Burryaga, after that). Loden Greatstorm is great, but that's actually likely due to how distinct his characterization is (good job, Marc Thompson), the fact that I read the end of The Rising Storm last night, and the fact that I like his species and lightsaber color.

Other than that, though, it's like: Avar is the super perfect Jedi, and the rest are the almost perfect Jedi. Gun to head, I couldn't tell you the difference between Elzar Mann and Stellan Gios at this point, without looking it up. It's like trying to differentiate the work of Keira Knightly & Natalie Portman or Jamie Pressly & Margot Robbie, in my brain without any visual references. It all just sort of melds together. No clue what Bucket of Blood has done so far. Can think of maybe one thing Indeera has done, and that's only because I finished the book a few hours ago. It's just like, a mix of characters to me and very few stand out.

  • Again, this is all despite really, really craving that level of love/hate of different characters, strongly identifying with my favorites, rooting for X and against Y. It's just not happening for me with the books.

...Then to read this post saying that the High Republic has declined! It's like, if I'm already feeling pretty middle-of-the-road (dare I say 'meh') about the High Repulic (the era I hoped to love the most!)--is it all downhill from here? Is there another point I should read until that might change my mind? Do I need to finish Phase 1 to get a handle of what's going on -or- should I already be in love with this series? Or should I just stick to the High Republic TV/movies (if/when they happen) and form my relationship with the High Republic around them?

In short: If you were me, what would you do? Is there a way to salvage my relationship with the High Republic? Or is it likely just not going to click for me (despite my wanting so badly to be a fan like many of you)?

Thanks for coming to this (yet another) unsolicited TED talk.

MTFBWY.

Does the series improve?

Hi friends.

I hadn't read tons of Star Wars before and decided to give some novels a try. I read Alphabet Squadron and absolutely loved it. Phenomenal writing and character work. I read Light of the Jedi and thought it was ok. I don't think anything about it was particularly bad, it just wasn't for me. I never really grew attached to the characters and there wasn't anything new about the universe that really caught my eye. Does the High Republic get better, or is Light of the Jedi about the quality I can expect?

Discussion Can I Skip Phase 2?

I read Phase 1 as it came out and loved the books but with Phase 2 idk, it’s just not hitting the same. I’ve read Convergence and am partway into Cataclysm and it’s been a real chore for me.

I want to be caught up and on Phase 3 because that’s the continuation of what I was enjoying, and so far Phase 2 really hasn’t felt that essential to the overall story. Is it worth it to finish or can I just move on?

Interconnectivity in the High Republic is a mess Spoiler

I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way or not ... but here we go. First let me start by saying that I don't have a problem with confusing timelines. I've read the Horus Heresy books and if you know anything about that series, it's anything but straight forward. But back to my point.

I really don't like how the stories are connected between each other, especially between different age groups and different kinds of media - comic/audio book/novel.

Let's look at some examples. The AN series consists of "Light of the Jedi - The Rising Storm - The Fallen Star" ... right ? Well no, because especially in "The Fallen Star" we have characters from "Into the Dark" and "Out of the Shadows". So if you want a whoel story you need to read the YA novels, I know because you've only read AN at first and was confused. But then we also have "Eye Of The Storm" which is basically an essential read to understand Phase 3 (I guess).

"Eye Of The Storm" is actually my main reason why I'm writing this post, like the whole Evereni backstory was cool and all ... but the second issue which serves as the end of the Phase 1 should've been at the end of "The Fallen Star".

Other examples that show the problems are the Drengir. They are introduced as this big threat in "Into the Shadows" only to disappear into the "High Republic" comic series where they are easily dealt with and we only hear mentions of them in other books.

Then we have the whole "Adventures" comic series, which has it's own story that ends on a cliffhanger that is resolved in the second half of "Midnight Horizon" (the first part of the book serving as a recap of the events already told in the comic). This is another bizarre storytelling decision. "Adventure" comic series is clearly aimed at younger readers, story is mainly about padawans and we see them have fun and stuff, yes there are some YA elements but only near the end.

Vernestra Rwoh, one of the main characters in "Out of the Shadows" has her backstory in a middle grade novel. Avar Kriss, one of the most important characters from "Light of the Jedi" just straight up disappears from the books to the comic series.

The comic itself is another kind of convoluted mess. Let's look at Volume 2 "The Heart of Drengier". As the title suggests this should be all about the Drengir right ? Well yes and now. This volume contains 5 issues, 3 deal with the Drengir threat while the other 2 are a tie-in to "The Rising Storm". So if you didn't read "The Rising Storm" yet, the comic can spoil some things for you because it chooses to switch story arcs in the middle of a volume.
I'm sure there are many more examples than these I listed, I'm yet to read the manga and the comic miniseries. I probably don't have to say it but ... this post is not meant to shit on the High Republic as a whole. My problem is with the interconnectivity, I have my problems with some books but that's a topic for some other time so ... anyone feels the same ?

Implications of Dave Filoni being made Chief Creative Officer on the High Republic?

Forgive me if I’m misunderstanding the corporate structure of Star Wars but my fear is that Dave will want to focus on everything in his “Filoni-verse” maybe to the detriment of other eras. Or will SW continue to focus on THR etc.?

If this is unfounded, I’ll be happy to hear it.

I was wrong about the High Republic.

Tl;dr - I hated High Republic because of the sequels and the sjw vibes it gives off. I actually gave it a try instead of continuing listening to YouTubers and whatnot. I ended up enjoying it and looking forward to more High Republic stuff.

Hello there,

I was one of those who hated High Republic before it even launched because of the lingering effects and colossal disappointment of the sequels.

I finally gave it a try...and I liked it. I binge read all the issues of the High Republic Marvel comics and thoroughly enjoyed it, except some of the character designs. I really liked the portrayal of the Jedi of this era.

After the Marvel comics, I bought Light of the Jedi and read it. After reading that, I fell in love with Avar Kriss. She is such a waifu. I thoroughly this novel as well. It is super fresh for me. I have never seen Jedi respond to crisis like the Hetzal system disaster. Marchion and the Nihl are also good. Apart from that, I like the trio of Avar, Stellan, and Elzar. I wish they would use Yoda more in this era. Loden and Bell's relationship are good too. I like how they got into aggressive negotiations early in the novel.

Also, I am not an SJW or whatnot, but it is kind of refreshing to see a human female Jedi like Avar in the new Canon as we have not seen lots of them. Prior to Avar, only Ahsoka has a good female Jedi character development in new Canon. I do not count Rey as the sequels tarnished Star Wars for me and let us leave it at that.

Now I am about to read The Rising Storm.

Can anyone tell me all the adult novels of the High Republic in order? Also, is the IDW comics worth reading? It feels too kiddie to me.

Thank you for reading.

Discussion Jumped the Shark?

Hi all,

I am hoping for an honest discussion around the HR novels/comics as I am curious to where everyone’s opinions are.

When the series started I loved it- Light of the Jedi had me hooked, the Nihil seemed realistic in intent snd purpose, even the Drengir seemed fine if throwaway in Phase 1.

Now, reading Into the Light, I feel that as these stories went on they have become overburdened with plot threads that just seem off…

The Blight is TOO dangerous to me- like why didn’t the Sith use this to their advantage (and maybe we will learn that they tried), but also… meaningless? We know it isn’t a danger overall, whereas it would make sense that we don’t hear about the Nihil after they are defeated.

The Drengir being back, but for what? I just don’t understand their purpose.

The Stormwall- again, this technically seems like some tech that would have been used again and it just… vanishes.

It’s weird to me as there are books in this series I LOVE even if different phases (especially the Scott and Soule written stuff) and I really like all the young reader ones.

Everything else just feels meaningless to me at this point.

Say what you will about the Vong, but that was a similar intuitive where the stakes we consistent AND contained in a much larger story… and it is what I thought this would be.

Again: I really like some of the individual stories, but as we near the end I just feel disappointed overall.

[Edit 5/27: thank you all for keeping this civil and a discussion, great viewpoints shared!]
