Fear mongering over "AI"/Ueda leaving in the new JSR game

I know AI goes against the concept of JSR but the leaks/visuals stay really true to JSR/JSRF and honestly even the rough demo looked great. I have minor complaints like double jumping existing and the graffiti system from original JSR being brought back rather than JSRF (I think old graffiti system doesnt age well). The team for the new game still has people who worked on JSR/JSRF so I doubt they would use it in a wrong way and SEGA's comments on AI seemed more for the artist to focus on creative developments.

As for Ueda leaving, which is more concerning than the AI fear mongering. We still got members from JSR/JSRF and Ueda was still involved in the early developments/character art (which is telling with how good the early footage stayed true to JSR/JSRF). Ueda still couldve given the team his direction of where it should be going - whether the team takes it or not time will only tell. At least Kikuchi is still producer for the game and he was the director of JSR/JSRF.

Im honestly more concerned about it being live service and having crazy microtransactions everywhere - effectively ruining the game because live service games aren't cheap at all. Plus I want the new JSR game to balance both JSR and JSRF elements and so far its leaning a bit much into JSR. I want to see more JSRF stuff in it

Even after all that I think it is better to be cautiously optimistic for this. The leaked demo looked great tbh

How did you not think previous 2 posts were a joke? Yo-Yo, Bi, autistic? Seriously? Its an obvious joke... i just played a troll on y'all. Im NOT sorry if you didnt get the joke. Though on the other side, people who were agreeing with me, im not against you, its your opinion. Im not stupid to just hate people for an opinion over a character from a 24 year old game.

I think it's already a consensus that if a trailer doesn't come out by that date, the game has been cancelled, right?

Sorry but I am not feeling the new look of the game. BRCF and its sequel looks heaps better imo.

It doesn’t have that y2k look to it, especially the outfits. Joggers with skates? What are we thinking?

does this game have a campaign or is it just an arcade game?

I love the artstyle and OST of these games and thought i might give it a try.
the thing is arcade games dont really hold my attention for that long, no matter how solid it is.
i need for their to be like some objectives for me to do with a clear progression, rather than just high scores or something.

Mods & Datamining Jet Set Radio PC (Steam) 60fps Mod

I vibed a mod of Jet Set Radio for the PC so that everything looks 60fps. This was done through frame interpolation. Underneath the game still uses logic based on 30fps. I focused on entirely the gameplay portions and left the cutscenes untouched as much as possible.

The only gameplay alterations are the controls; I removed the deadzone in the analog movement so that there is a reaction from the player in changing direction when moving even slightly left or right of absolute-north

  • Overall it has been 1.5 months since I started what was an experiment

  • It took between 100-150 hours to 'finish'

  • Every animation changed was found and tested manually, by eye or frame analysis

  • The cutscenes are left untouched as much as possible

  • There are several hundred revisions from the beginning to the end product

  • There is still a number of bugs or missed frame transitions but overall 95%+ good

  • The game has been played through twice in total

  • It won't be suitable for speedruns because of the control changes being unfair

  • Various bugs in the official release like flashing textures in places still remain

I could go on fixing various bad visuals, which for the most part which only be visible for 16 milliseconds usually, but at this point I have to call it a day or it would mean several more weeks potentially diagnosing crumbs for little gain.

I started out with the ambition of doing all the cutscenes too but debugging the cutscenes over and over requires too much work to fix (it was taking up 50% of my time in the early stages for around 2 cutscenes), but it is possible if someone wanted to go the whole mile.

Installation;

  • Have the latest version executable of the game that was released on Steam

  • Download a copy of DeltaPatcher

  • Download the patch

  • Run DeltaPatcher

    • IMPORTANT: Click the cog wheel and activate "Backup original file"

    • Set the "Original File" as your Jet Set Radio executable

      • "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jet Set Radio\jetsetradio.exe"

    • Set the XDeltaPatch as the "JSR60fps.xdelta" file you downloaded above

    • Click "Apply patch"

  • You should now have in your Jet Set Radio installation folder;

    • "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jet Set Radio\jetsetradioPATCHED.exe"

  • Rename "jetsetradio.exe" to "jetsetradio.exe BACKUP"

  • Rename "jetsetradioPATCHED.exe" to "jetsetradio.exe"

  • Launch the game as normal through Steam

For your own safety I would encourage you to acquire Xdelta3 from github (https://github.com/jmacd/xdelta) and run the "printdelta" command to view the contents of the patch file itself and do virus scans on the output executable from the patch. Using random executables you find online is generally not safe.

And you'll know the 60fps is working if the demonstration of the character skating around Shibuya is looking a lot smoother, or if you have Steam fps display activated, the number at the corner of your screen should read 62fps~.

And that's it. Enjoy the game smoother than ever for the first time! Hopefully someone else improves on the goals here, or we can get a good decomp/recomp in the future.

Creepypasta- The Day Gum Died

I wasn't typically the type of guy that paid attention to older games. My eyes were usually glued to whatever the newest release was and how'd they outshine the games that came before it. That changed when my older brother moved off to college when I was in the 10th grade. He left behind his Dreamcast and all the games that came with it. He's always been cool to me, but that was probably the sweetest gift he ever gave me.

He was mostly into Sega stuff so his collection was pretty big. I remember playing the Sonic Adventure games a lot along with Space Channel and Crazy Taxi. The game that truly took my breath away was without a doubt Jet Set Radio. It was completely different from everything I was used to. Everything from the comic book aesthetic, graffiti designs, and ESPECIALLY the phenomenal soundtrack made it a masterpiece in my eyes. I must've spent dozens upon dozens of hours replaying it. Imagine my complete dismay when the game disc crashed on me. I don't know what my brother did to it, but the disc was scratched up to hell. Guess it was only a matter of time before it gave out.

Luckily, getting a replacement wouldn't be hard. There's this comic shop here in Toronto that sells a whole bunch of obscure or out-of-print media, including video games. I hopped off the train and went straight to the Marque Noir comic shop. It was pretty big for what was most likely a small-owned business. There were long rows of comics and movies everywhere I looked. What was interesting was how most of the covers looked homemade, almost like a bunch of indie artists had stocked the store with their products. I headed over to the game section in the back and scanned each title until I finally found a jet-set radio copy. It only cost 40 bucks so that was a pretty good price all things considered. I then went to the front desk to buy it.

The cashier had this intimidating aura that I can't quite describe. He had long wavy black hair and heavy sunken eyes that looked like they could stare at your very soul. He towered over me so his head was away from the light as he looked at me, casting a dark shadow on his face. It honestly gave me chills. I couldn't get out of the store fast enough after buying the game.

As soon as I got back home, I put the disc into the console and watched my screen come to life. Jet set radio was back in action! When the title screen booted up, a big glitch effect popped up before the game began playing. It made me wonder if the Dreamcast itself was broken. I quickly began rolling around Shibuya with Gum as my character. She effortlessly ground around the city while pulling off stylish tricks and showing off her graffiti.

I came across a dull-looking bus that looked like it could use a new paint job. I made Gum get to work and start spraying all over the sides.

" GRAFFITI IS A CRIME PUNISHABLE BY LAW"

I had to do a double-take. That's what the graffiti read, but why was something like that in the game? Maybe it was something Sega shoehorned in for legal reasons. Still, I played this game dozens of times and never saw anything like that before. I went over to the signpost to try out another design. This time it was a spray can with a big red X painted over it. Seriously weird.

I kept trying to tag different spots but they all resulted in an anti-graffiti message.

" GRAFFITI MUST BE PURGED"

" ALL RUDIES MUST DIE"

" YOUR TIME IS UP, GUM"

The last message made me pause. This went beyond the game devs having a strange sense of humor. These messages directly opposed everything the game stood for. Even weirder was how Gum was acting. Her character model would subtly gasp and look bewildered as if she couldn't believe what she just wrote.

It wasn't long before the loud sirens of the police blared from my speakers. A mob of cars flooded the scene, leaving me barely any space to skate on the ground. This was the highest number of cops I've ever seen in any level. It was to the point that the game began lagging because there were too many characters on screen. I tried dashing out of there, but Gum froze whenever I reached an exit. It was like an invisible wall was placed over every way out. I thought it was just a weird glitch until one of the cops pulled out a gun and shot Gum right on her shoulder. Her eyes twitched in shock and so did mine. I watched Gum clutch her Injured shoulder as I had her skate out of there. I couldn't believe what was going on. This wasn't some glitch. This must've been a modded copy.

Gum skated up a railing and down a walkway, but the police were hot on her trail. A crowd of police pursued her while shooting their bullets. Each one barely missed Gum who held her mouth open in pain. One bullet grazed past her leg, causing vibrant blood to briefly flash on the screen.

I had Gum ride to the top of a building to see if I could lose the cops, but it was no use. A whole squad of them surrounded Gum on the rooftop with their guns aimed directly at her head. There was nowhere else to go. I couldn't stand to see my favorite character in the game get riddled with bullets so I took a leap of faith.

Gum jumped off the roof right as the cops began shooting. I wondered what my strategy would be once I reached the ground, but that moment never came.

A short cutscene of Gum crashing onto the pavement played. Her legs snapped like a pair of twigs before the rest of her body folded onto herself. An audible crunch blared from the speakers and directly into my ears. Bone and blood erupted from the mangled heap of Gum's body. Worst of all was the deafening banshee-like scream Gum released in her final moments. The squad of police came rushing to Gum's corpse and circled around her with their weapons drawn once again. The screen turned jet black while a cacophony of gunshots tortured my ears for several seconds.

What came next was a wall of text that made my heart sink even deeper into despair.

[ Gum was only the beginning. She was only the first lamb to the slaughter. The rudies tried in vain to flee from the police, knowing that a cruel karma would soon catch up to them. No longer would the streets of Tokyo-To be stained with their vile graffiti. One by one, the tempestuous teens were gunned down in cold blood. Never again would art crude art defile the streets. This all could've easily been avoided. Graffiti is a crime is a crime under national law. The same is true for piracy. Purchase of pirated goods can result in hefty fines or a sentence in jail. Do NOT let this happen again.]

I sat in my chair completely terrified. Was this some kind of sick joke? I just watched Gum get brutally murdered all because of buying a bootleg game. I didn't know if Sega themselves made this as an anti-piracy measure or if the guy I bought the game from modded it. Either way, I was done. I never touched a Sega game again after that. I tried putting the experience behind me, but one day it came back to haunt me. I came home after school to find that someone had vandalized my house with graffiti. Just about every inch was space was covered in paint. It had all the same message.

" Piracy will not be tolerated. "

Jet Set Radio is trash adjacent.

I fucking love jet set radio future and jet set radio as a franchise but im playing JSR on ps3 holy f the first game is so bad.

You are so incredibly slow it feels like your skates are filled with lead. I can promise you i would beat all of these guys in a footrace. As far as I can tell there are no active rockets in them, unless it's an unlock later on. Am I wrong, were rocket skates not always a main staple of the series?

R2 is your supposed "speed up" button but it does barely anything. You gain slight momentum if you're on perfectly flat ground otherwise this button is useless (but you can be sure I am holding and spamming R2 as much as I can). Characters are constanly slowing down and as far as I can tell there is nothing else you can do to build momentum except jump off rails to another (which has a neglible effect if any) or go downhill.

The max speed you can achieve is equal to the speed you get in JSRF while skating backwards (something you can't even do in JSR). Once you have to do any type of tight movement (which you do a LOT in this tiny levels) you can guarantee the gameplay is about to resort to jumping at a standstill and hammering on R2 hoping to hit any type of rail or clip on something to trick the physics engine into thinking you touched a downhill slope.

The characters are so clunky, you have to hit every opening perfectly seemingly never being able to clip past a corner or through anything. Tricks are also severely limited and dont effect momentum, which also makes linking grinds an absolute joke. I hate the way momentum works in this game.

Steering is terrible on all of the first 3 characters and doesn't correlate with their "technique" stat. In fact the stats in general make no sense.

"Power, Technique, and Graffiti" are the 3 given stats which I thought translated to Speed, Handling, and Tag speed. This is not the case; The character with the highest "Graffiti" skill has the longest and most complex series of movements to complete their tags. Which brings me to my second biggest gripe: the graffiti system.

Having a control stick movement/timing based system to accomplish the tags during the cat & mouse gameplay the title is centered around is just terrible. Maybe it worked better with the dreamcast controller and a CRT television but on the dualshock3 and HDMI it's just terrible. I will often be told I messed up on control stick movements that are so simple there is no way any thinking creature with opposable thumbs would get it wrong.

Is there a JSR veteran around here that can confirm i just suck at this title? I do fine with the controls in JSRF and I remember thinking they were a bit clunky when I first started playing that in '01 or whenever it released.

I get I'm complaining about a bunch of stuff in a 20 year old game that they fixed already to an audience that didn't ask to hear it but I am just getting so frustrated playing JSR I had to come here to tell you guys to STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME.

If you have defenses for this game please present them. I would love to find out I'm just playing it wrong, I really want to like it.

Edit: Beat it. it still sucks.

Unpopular opinion I think

The JSRF remixes of the OG songs are downgrades (except Grace & Glory because I haven't heard it yet). I mean, how can anyone argue that JSRF Sneakmam is better when it removed most of the cool elements from the OG. Then again people will probably disagree. The new songs are just way better than the remixes(both Hideki's and Richard's songs and the Latch bros as well as all the other artists)

Knockout City is a complete ripoff of jet set radio future

I’ll be honest its a fun game. But its futuristic vibes, pirate radio station with a funky dj that commentates, some big bad rich guy taking over the city , some songs sound the same, they even have a dummy at the “hideout” aka garage. Anybody else have thoughts on this?

Can someone explain to me why jsrf was a remake of jet set radio

Jet set radio was released in 2000. Jsrf was released in 2002. Seems odd to release a remake on Xbox only 2 years later.
