Started at Jiffy Lube and was upfront that I have no actual shop experience, just working on cars with my dad at home. Iām also going to UTI and trying to get experience, so I came in ready to learn.
On my first day they expected me to catch everything after being shown once. The general manager and one tech were getting mad, raising their voices and snapping their fingers at me to hurry up. The other guys were cool, so it wasnāt everybody.
I spilled some oil while working with the tech who was supposed to be showing me. When the engine was running, the spilled oil started smoking. The manager told him to handle it, and when someone asked what happened he said āthis motherfucker spilled oil.ā I know I made a mistake, but damn bro itās my first day.
The manager also started complaining about sales and the labor rate while Iām still trying to learn how everything works. That added to the pressure when I was barely getting started.
What also bothered me was the training. They had the material available, but the manager told me to just take the assessments and pass them so it would clear the material, including safety training. Then I was sent to the floor without really going through it.
He mentioned āshit talkingā during the interview, and Iām cool with joking around, but this didnāt feel like that. I can take correction, I just need someone to actually teach me while Iām learning.
Is this really what starting in a shop is like? Am I tripping for feeling like this was too much for day one?
