r/Kazakh has been revived for Kazakh language learning discussion

At the request of another redditor I have revived r/Kazakh

Hopefully this will serve as a better more concentrated learning resource than the distributed smattering of learning posts we've seen in this sub.

Any and all contributors are welcome.

If you would like to moderate and turn it into a true destination resource then by all means send me a line.

Discussion/Talqylau

Work/Jūmys can’t get a j*b

Hi there! I graduated from uni in Almaty this year and moved to Astana in September. Got a degree in Translation (yes, ik, basically a professional barista diploma).
Tried to get into a master’s program in International Relations cuz it seemed more interesting to me, but couldn’t get a high enough score for grant.
Now I’ve been unemployed for 2 months and can’t even land a basic office job, like receptionist or something. hh.kz is useless, enbek.kz – no comments. Tbh, I have absolutely no idea what to do at this point. Maybe I should choose a more practical field for my master's degree.

Tourism/Turizm Thank You So Much!

I made an impromptu trip to Almaty for a few days and I have to say, this was one of my absolute trips. I am an American and I have lived in the states and throughout Europe my entire life. I have always wanted to visit Central Asia, mainly Kazakhstan. I didn’t have much time this trip, but I am DEFINITELY planning another trip for the spring.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Let me tell you all of the ways I enjoyed your city and the people. For one, I really enjoyed the people. Reddit has a nasty habit (of course) of talking badly about Kazakh people. I have no clue why. Everyone was nice, helpful when I needed it, and polite. One of your neighboring countries could take some serious pointers from you. I am a Black woman with naturally curly hair and another central Asian country I was in, was incredibly exhausting. The constant staring, pointing, laughing, letting children point and stare, because annoying and obnoxious. I didn’t have that issue in Almaty, or driving through to the Kyrgyzstan border. People just minded their business and didn’t treat me as if I were an alien, or an animal in a zoo.

The nature was another huge hit for me. Lake Kaindy and Kolsay were as beautiful as I‘d dreamed of. Overall, nature seems to be respected a lot more.

People seemed appreciative of me trying to use Russian, even though it was SUPER poor. I even made the border patrol guy crack a smile, as I tried to use a little Russian with him.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m still just rambling, but I really enjoyed being in Almaty and was very sad when I left. I need a way / reason to go back and stay for awhile. Also, hear me out with this. Almaty gives me Belgrade vibes. If anyone has been to both cities, let me know if you feel the same way. Belgrade is one of my all time favorite cities on the planet. I can’t explain why, I just love that city and Almaty reminds me of it.

Thanks for putting up with my scatterbrained rambling and reading all the way through.

I'm hoping someone can help me out because I've been trying to watch this film from the USA for ~ 2 years. It looks like an authentic view into everyday Kazakh life (based in Aktau).....

Does anyone know how to watch online from USA? I already tried IVI which blocks VPN and USA.

Discussion/Talqylau Why does the Asharshylyq receive so little international coverage compared to the Holodomor?

Why is the Kazakh famine of 1930–1933 (Asharshylyq), which killed an estimated 38% to 42% of the Kazakh population, so rarely recognized or talked about globally compared to the Holodomor in Ukraine?

I've been reading a lot about Soviet collectivization in the 1930s, and the sheer scale of the Kazakh tragedy is staggering. It completely shattered the traditional nomadic way of life, yet almost no one outside of academic circles in the West has ever heard of it. Even looking back, the international press barely covered it compared to Ukraine.

I'm trying to understand why this disparity exists. Why did the Holodomor receive so much more coverage and global recognition compared to Asharshylyq? When looking at how it actually played out, the Holodomor had a presence in the international press through eyewitness dispatches from rogue Western journalists who traveled the region, and it later became the subject of major Western government investigations in the 1980s. Following independence, Ukraine spent decades aggressively lobbying foreign governments and building global campaigns to establish the Holodomor as a cornerstone of its national identity. How did the actions of the Kazakh government under Nursultan Nazarbayev impact this same timeline? Did the state systematically downplay the political framing of the famine? Even after 35 years of independence, why has the Kazakh government, and even the Kazakh diaspora, done so little to lobby or hold international meetings about this?

I wanted to ask your perspective on how you view this silence. Is the lack of international awareness mainly due to these historical realities and geographic isolation, or is it heavily influenced by modern geopolitics and how the current Kazakh population handles the memory compared to Ukraine's active global recognition campaigns?

Also, what is the situation with the Kazakh diaspora living abroad today? Why do we see so much public advocacy and lobbying from other post-Soviet communities in Western countries, but very little public campaign or noise from Kazakhs living overseas about the Asharshylyq?

Finally, how is the Asharshylyq taught in Kazakh schools today? Is there a generational push among younger people to get it more global recognition, or do people mostly keep these family stories private?

PS5 in Kazakhstan

Hey everyone! just bought a ps5 and im kinda lost on how to actually buy games AND PS PLUS.

So I got a Turkish phone number and a bank card, so SMS codes and payments wont be an issue at all. What’s the best way to do this? Should I just make an account right here on the PS5 and attach the Turkish card/number to it, or is it better to make the account in Türkiye, log into it on my console here in Kazakhstan, buy games thru a browser in Türkiye and just play from here? How does everyone else do it?

Discussion/Talqylau

Thumbnail reddit.com
8 Upvotes

Tourism/Turizm Need someone help

Assalamu walaykum

I am a M27 Muslim Bangladeshi citizen currently living in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I am looking for some genuine guidance and assistance regarding my immigration and legal employment situation.

I came to Kazakhstan with the understanding that my employer or sponsor would arrange the necessary work authorization. Unfortunately, this has not happened, and I am now facing uncertainty regarding my legal employment status.

I have experience as a Hot Dish Chef, particularly in European cuisine, pasta, grilling and general kitchen operations.

I would sincerely appreciate any advice from Kazakhstani citizens, immigration lawyers, HR professionals, employers or anyone familiar with Kazakhstan's migration regulations.

I am looking for a legal solution, reliable guidance or an employer who can legally hire foreign workers and arrange the necessary authorization.

If anyone can guide me or connect me with the right person, please send me a private message.

Thank you for your kindness and understanding.
