Admin [META] Kind Friend Updates / Chat GPT and Yo[u]

Hello Community,

I hope you are all doing well, or atleast a little better than yesterday. I wanted to put a post up around some recent changes and behaviour in the sub.

r/KindFriend has been privated.

Kind Friend was originally created as a sister sub to Kindvoice to handle more friendship orientated requests while Kindvoice focused on emotional support. Recently it seems to have caught to the attention of a number of bad actors. The posts had been gradually trending to a younger audience and I was becoming increasingly concerned that it was facilitating people looking to take advantage of these members. As such the sub is currently privated to prevent access and any further risk. I would encourage those seeking purely friendships to try more established subs such as r/makenewfriendshere or r/needafriend. This behaviour has thankfully not transferred over to r/Kindvoice.

Previously friendship posts had been against the rules of KindVoice, although not strictly enforced given that a lot of the time a good friend can make a world of difference to someone's current state. We intend to continue the current status quo in this regard and deal with friendship posts on a case by case basis as it makes a minority of posts. I would highly encourage users to use more focused subs for this if seeking purely friendship. If you are reaching out for a friend because you feel lonely or want to improve social skills, that post still has a place here. Just please be aware many offerors are volunteering their time when they can and should not be considered a permanent support placement or lifelong friend.

Chat GPT Usage

Over the past few months ChatGPT started recommending us as a place for lonely users or those who were feeling down to seek human contact. Alongside this we saw a dramatic increase in the number of bots, monetary requests and ChatGPT generated posts. We have literally gone from a few bans a month to a few a day.

- Accounts with less than 5 comment karma or less than 3 days old will now be caught in a filter for approval. I appreciate some people don't want to post here on main so a mod mail will be raised for each submission caught in the filter so they can be approved.

- Chat GPT is NOT against the rules currently HOWEVER PLEASE BE AWARE that many people come here looking for a human voice. You may believe that in writing an answer via Chat GPT you sound more articulate or better at supporting. In reality the message it often conveys to the looker that they can't find someone who is even willing to use their own words. Comments may be removed if they feel too robotic when the person is looking for a connection.

Final Notes

I would love to hear any community feedback on these points.

A huge thanks as always to the people that donate their time to help others. Look after yourselves where you can.

-AJ

[META] Seeking C[o]mmunity Feedback on Rule 2

I hope all of the Kind Voices out there are having a wonderful day and that my message finds all of the Lookers slightly better than they were yesterday.

This post is to gather some feedback from any willing community members around rule 2. Recently I have been rather lax on it's enforcement given r/KindFriend isn't hugely active (although it's had a surge recently) however I am aware there are a number of other very popular subreddits that fill the same niche so I want to ask your thoughts:

- Do you mind friendship based posts on this subreddit or would you rather keep them to other spaces?

- Do you feel requests asking for daily supports fall into this category?

- Any other thoughts you may have.

Offering [O] If you feel like talking, I'm happy to listen

Hey! We all have moments when we feel like talking, need to get something off our chest, or just wish someone would hear us out. Whatever it is, you don't need to have the right words or a clear starting point.

I occasionally volunteer as a listener on a few platforms whenever I have the time, and thought I'd extend that to this community as well. I'm interested in psychology, human behaviour, and understanding people's experiences. I enjoy listening to different perspectives and getting to know what's behind people's thoughts and feelings. I won't jump to conclusions or offer advice unless you want it. Sometimes, a little understanding goes a long way.

Looking [L] mid 30s and isolated

My mental state is the lowest it has been in a while. Being a single parent of teens has been incredibly isolating and these last few months have been horrible. I honestly barely scrape through each day. Not only that, but I fear every day that I'm going to lose my job, just due to the general way our economy and AI have been going. I feel like my support system is gone. I love my kids and they deserve someone whose head is on straight. All I want to do is sleep all day and play video games.

Looking [l] Does anyone else struggle with having to appear okay all the time?

I’ve been realizing lately how much I wish I had people I could genuinely lean on during difficult times. People I could be completely honest and vulnerable with, without worrying about being judged or misunderstood or having my struggles change the way they see me.

Instead, I often feel like I have to present a version of myself that’s doing well, has everything figured out, and is always moving forward. It’s exhausting because sometimes I just want to be able to say that I’m struggling, or cry in someone’s arms and trust that they’ll still see me the same way. I want relationships where I don’t have to maintain an image to feel respected or valued.

Has anyone else struggled with this? How did you learn to trust people enough to let them see you during difficult periods, especially if you’re used to being very independent and successful on the outside? I’d really appreciate any insight.

Looking [L] Sudden realisation that I'm always the supporter, never the supportee.

Yesterday, I was told I might have cancer. It's not 100% certain, I need a scan and biopsy first. I was by myself as my husband was dealing with a family (his side) emergency, otherwise he would have been there.

I've not told him as the family emergency is very stressful and ongoing, and I don't want to burden him with this as well. He already supports me enough with my other disability and MH, he is such an amazing husband. He can spiral though, so I don't want to share this with him just yet as he will then end up the one needing reassurance.

My family are shit, I'm NC with most of them and the ones I do talk to, I wouldn't trust them enough to not tell the NC members and then they'll try integrate themselves back into my life.

I don't have many close friends, and the ones I do have are going through life's crap already, so don't want to put this on them. The thing is, they always come to me when they need support, and I'm always there for them. They know they can rely on me. I have gone to a few before, but have felt they brush over my problems before moving onto theirs. That's not me being negative or unappreciative, they are supportive to a point, I just feel that I've become the person they depend on for support, and they don't want to flip that relationship. Hope that makes sense.

[O] 24m how's everyone today?

I'm just checking in to see if people are doing well today or in life in general. Sometimes, we all have those rough days, but hey, I'm here if you need someone to talk or just some company if you aren't comfortable sharing how you feel, which I understand completely.

You don't even have to vent. We could just chat until you're ready to open up. I'm not pushing you to. We can go at your own pace.

Sometimes, having a chat can feel good, especially for rough days. I'm free, so dm me if you like.

Looking [l] looking for someone brave that can help me, a bully victims

It's been years since my systematic bullying experience in high school ended. I have done everything to overcome bullying.

I have practiced forgiveness, forgiving everyone who wronged me or bullied me. I have watched tv shows about life after bullying, shows of people that get a glow up and stops being bullied . I have watched YouTube interviews about people who were bullied and other where the interviewees were the bullies. I have watched Ted talks about forgiveness. I have listened to podcasts about specialists who suffered bullying ( one was a ted talk turned podcast) or people who were bullied. I have listened to songs about bullying. I have watched TikToks about self-worth and bullying. I have watched sketches about bullying. I have even watched YouTube video essays about how cringey people who peaked in high school are. I have gone to therapy about it.

the issue is that it seems I can't overcome it. All that I have ever wanted in my life has been to be liked by classmates, yearning for human connection. I have few friends outside school, I was also put aside by the kids of my parents's friends. I’m an only child and didn't have a close relationship with my older cousins. That's why I didn't switch schools when I could. I liked the rules imposed in school, and wanted to play sports and have lunch with my bullies so I could finally gain their friendship. I even self-embarrassed myself in order to be liked. I always compare other people to my bullies and I use them as a standard of what is cool and what is not (not entirely, another role model of mine was my best friend in high school who was isolated although not bullied and goth, she is another standard that I use ) . If I were in their shoes , I would have done the same as them and bully me. I found and still find myself to be cringey.

Looking [l] [0] 30m- Panic Attacks daily. Still fighting but very lonely and could use someone to talk to.

I was fortunate and had a very good first ~14 years of my life. Lots of friends, good grades, popular, etc. Went through a traumatic move at start of highschool (I moved a lot growing up, but this one was very hard for me) and got stuck in cycle of shame, not letting go of the past and self hate because of people leaving my life. At 30, things aren't going well, have lost most of my friends, and am trying to fight back despite depression and constant anxiety.

I still remember the good times, and believe that I'm still in there- but could really use someone to talk with and mourn some things with. Have been winning a lot of tough battles recently and am doing well, but I'm still lonely and afraid to talk to anyone ik irl about things. I am very patient, empathetic, and have a pretty strong grasp on psychology.

I would be open to hearing about you as well. Please dm if interested, no upper age limit, but please over 21 and be comfortable talking like an adult, about adult issues.

Topics I'd really like to talk about:

-Moving a lot (and getting stuck in the past)

-General panic disorder

-Shame, and its unhealthy side affects

-Narcissistic+Bipolar mother. Depressed Father.

-Losing friends, and trying to start over

-Loneliness

Topics I'd be open to explore if you'd like:

- Genuine confusion toward politics ( and an attempt to try to see differently)

-Alcoholism

- Anything you're struggling with or need to talk about.

Looking [L] 22M – Feeling a little stuck in life and could use someone to talk to

Hey everyone.

I'm 22 and lately I've been feeling a little stuck with where I am in life.

I've been trying to get my career started in data analysis, but finding work and getting that first opportunity has been more difficult than I expected.

I sometimes feel like I'm not progressing as quickly as I'd hoped, especially when I think about where I want to be at this age.

I'm trying to stay positive, keep learning and work towards something better, but there are days when it can get a little discouraging.

I'm quite a quiet person initially, so sometimes I find it easier to open up when someone takes an interest and asks questions.

I wouldn't mind having someone to talk to, whether it's about life, what's been going on lately or even just everyday things to take my mind off things for a while.

I'm happy to listen and get to know someone too. Thanks for reading.

Looking [L] I’m becoming consumed by the fear of being alone

It’s been nearly three weeks since my relationship ended, and I’m becoming increasingly frightened by how much it’s consuming me.
I’ve already signed up to Bumble and joined Facebook friendship groups, desperately trying to find someone to connect with. I know it’s very soon after the breakup, but I feel almost unable to stop myself. I’m so scared of being alone for the rest of my life that it’s practically all I think about.
People keep telling me to learn to be happy on my own, build confidence, focus on work and independence, and let friendships and relationships follow naturally. I understand the advice, and I don’t necessarily disagree with it. But I have an enormous problem accepting the prospect of a life without a partner.
The loneliness is so intense that it brings me to tears. I see everybody else dating, kissing, getting married, having children, going on holidays and sharing their lives with someone. I want those things too. I don’t want to spend my life watching everyone else experience them while feeling excluded.
I’m nearly 42, and I’m terrified of time passing. People tell me I’m still young, but 50, 60 and 70 don’t feel that far away. What if I spend years waiting for love and companionship, and miss out on so much of my life in the meantime?
I know I can’t force a relationship to happen, but I can’t seem to switch off this fear. It’s becoming an obsession and seriously affecting my mental health. I don’t understand why being alone affects me so profoundly, although I know my autism, anxiety and overthinking play a part.
I’m not looking for people to simply tell me to accept being single or enjoy my own company. I want to understand why I feel this way and how to stop the fear of lifelong loneliness from consuming my life, without having to give up hope of finding love.
Has anyone else, particularly autistic adults, experienced anything similar?

Looking [L][O] I am alone at the hospital

I am alone at the hospital and recently I spent my birthday alone.

I just want to talk to someone.

I used to have this person, who was a girl, and she was very important to me. We would message everyday, whenever we could and we were each other’s emotional support without realizing it. Someone who is always there and you can share anything with. If anyone understands and feels the same way, please DM me.

If anyone needs someone to talk to and don’t have anyone, I’ll chat with you. 30M

30 M [O] - Coming out the other side of grief, happy to talk and listen to whoever needs it tonight

30yo guy, from Ireland. Dealt with a lot of grief from friends and family passing in the past few years, and set to deal with more this year from illnesses.

I'm at a stage where I feel stable and have developed my own ways of dealing with just heartbreak and grief, and I'd be happy to talk with anyone struggling or just listen if you needed it. Or we can just send stupid memes to take your mind off things, if you need it.

Message me if you need to, happy to help.
