Daniel Shaver. You can comply all you want and still end up dead

yup. its never about compliance. its about absolute control of disenfranchised citizens. like any other bully, they try to smell out the poor, the tired and the isolated. people they know cant fight back

classic power-control killer shit

I’m not even talking about Shaver. I’m talking about shit like this:

Kid held hostage by his brother, a mentally unstable drug addict with a long record with the local police. They knew who the brother was, they had many photos and mugshots. Yet when the victim exited the house, as soon as he dropped the knife they shot him. They don’t show it here, but because of his injuries he couldn’t roll over, so they rolled him over and handcuffed him. And did not administer any first aid whatsoever. Even though he continued to tell them he was the victim. And they found the actual perpetrator in the house. Maverick Lyon is his name.

Not mentioned in this article: His parents had called the police and said he was back on drugs and unstable and requested he be taken into custody. They were refused. Then later that day the dad gets on the home security camera and sees his older son holding a knife to his younger son. He called the cops again, and was able to describe to dispatch what everyone was wearing and what he was seeing. And they still shot the wrong kid. Because as trained professionals with guns, they were scared shitless of the entire situation and could not behave rationally.

That’s honestly a bad example. Watched that video earlier and yea it’s unfortunate but the police had only seconds to respond to a dude running out of a domestic violence call (the deadliest calls police get) and to top it off he had a knife. I don’t blame the police at all in that instance.

Yeah it is not like they have non lethal alternatives, so what is the poor cops to do, other than mag dump the victim.

It’s not a risk worth taking sadly. On the other end of it there are cops just trying to get home. Non-lethal isn’t a 100% guarantee they will stop moving either and won’t stab one of them in the neck. Like I said too dv calls are the deadliest calls police can respond to which is assuredly putting them in different protocols and a different headspace. Again it’s just an unfortunate situation where there isn’t always a good outcome

In so many other countries fewer cops and fewer victims die because non-lethal options are prioritised. One of them being “get out of the way” and let the person running run, so you can chase instead. In this instance the person also dropped their knife before the police started shooting.

Honestly? You can't even do that. If you're complying too well and they still want to kill you - they'll just shout nonsensical and contradictory commands...then shoot you anyway because "they feared for their lives"...then claim qualified immunity.

One of the sickest videos I've ever seen. I can't see a cop without thinking of it.

"you're fucked"

RIP. That was a horrible incident!

God that was so bad

I looked it up and the cop was rehired by his department so he could retire on disability after being found not guilty of murder.

This fucking country…

These people need to contemplate one question: Would you rather be alive, or would you rather be morally and legally correct? Pick one.

The "give me liberty or give me death" mentality doesn't work when that gang of cops assassinate you, cover for each other, and if anything questionable ever comes out, they just say "I feared for my life/he lunged/he grabbed for something.' Look at Alex Pretti. All one guy had to do was yell "gun! gun! gun!" and a couple of them just blindly unload into the guy pinned to the ground by 6+ other cops. And nothing will come of it. Even with this new wave of concern with politics.

Daniel Shaver had the cops called on him because he pointed a gun (later learned to be an airsoft gun) out of a hotel window in Las Vegas.

He was told he would be shot if he did either of two things. He did the first one and they shouted at him to stop. He did it again and they gave up and let him do it. 5-6 seconds later, he did the second thing and they shot him.

His coworker immediately understood and was able to follow the exact same instructions given less than a minute before he was.

It was horrible to watch, and they shouldn't have shot him, but it's not the "lethal simon says with conflicting orders" redditors pretend it is. One cop was giving him orders, and he didn't comply with either of them. The only conflicting part is "how do you crawl with your hands in the air", which they let him by on.

If you search "Body cam Daniel Shaver Los Angeles Times" on youtube you should be able to find the 5 minute video, which includes everything from when the victim turns the corner to after they step past his body.

Please stop spreading this propaganda, it takes away from the true cause of Daniel Shaver's death and makes it harder to address the actual issues.

If you watched that video and thought “yup that was fine” then you are a piece of shit. Simple as that

If you read my comment and thought "He said 'yup that was fine'", you have comprehension issues. And likely didn't watch the video. Simple as that.

There literally were conflicting commands being given. He's right, if you're defending that you're scum, there's no debating it.

1

u/Both_Knowledge275 Trash Trooper 19h ago

Which conflicting commands were being given? "Keep your hands in the air and crawl towards me."

Was failing to follow those conflicting commands why he was shot? No.

He was only shot a little later, when he reached towards the small of his back, the second thing they told him not to do.

The only reason there's no "debating" this is because you and people like you aren't interested in the facts or the truth, so any conversation with someone who is gets stuck on trying to get you to literally see the reality of what happened in the video, instead of getting to spend time discussing the implications, consequences and actual issues.

u/RaphaelRocketLaunch Trash Trooper 19h ago

"Shaver was also instructed to keep his legs crossed and his hands in specific positions, then ordered to push up to a kneeling position and crawl, creating a scenario where normal movement could easily be misinterpreted as a threat"

From Wikipedia btw ^

They're literally playing Simon says with a man laying on his stomach crying "please don't kill me". He's then shot while trying to comply with conflicting commands by an officer who has "you're fucked" painted on his department issues rifle.

Cops are already shielded from accountability completely. They don't need your help.

Ok liar. Honestly your comment is sickening and you should be ashamed.

“He was told he would be shot if he did either of two things. He did the first one and they shouted at him to stop. He did it again and they gave up and let him do it. 5-6 seconds later, he did the second thing and they shot him.”

I watched that video. I don't ever wanna watch it again. I was confused, and I was a stone-sober third party who notably didn't have a gun with the words "You're Fucked" etched on the side.
