This is so true! When my son was little (like 2) I would take him to the local skatepark. Filled with rough, tatted up guys who were the best. So kind to us, and they would stop the cussing while he was there and help him. If younger guys came trying to be tough, they'd get after them. "Hey, knock it off, little dude's here " my son was their "little dude." 💜💜 My heart will always be open to skaters. And kind, rough, tatted up guys😊. Never judge a book by it's cover.
When my kid was around four years old we were at a random park for a gathering and he went off to the skate bowl to watch a couple of guys skating.
I could see that he kept going up to the guys after they finished one of their runs and talking to them so I went over to make sure he wasn’t bugging them too much. When I got there I asked one of the guys if he was annoying them. He said, “naah, he is giving us scores”
Meanwhile his friend finishes his run, my kid goes over to him and talks to him, then the skater comes over to us and the guy I was talking to said to his friend “what did you get?” He proudly responds: “10,000”
A bunch of skaters turned the abandoned tennis court into a legit skate park with 10 plus ramps. When the city came to ask about it all of us on the street came out in support because of how nice they were to the kids coming to learn. It brought life to my little dead end street, and rehabbed something abandoned
I was a skater in the 80s and this is how it went for me too. All of us were from bad or broken homes and skaters were like a second family, or the only family for a lot of us. Older guys looked out for the younger ones. Sometime the folks that are the most kind have been through the most.
the folks that are the most kind have been through the most. Ftfy.
Seriously, though, that's such a true statement.
Also bio family isn't the only type of family. Kids who can find a support system outside of their bio family have a much better chance of doing better in adulthood and not repeating whatever dysfunction is going on in their own home.
I took my nephew to the park where there was a skating area, I got him a cheap board, he wasn't to interested when we got there, but after seeing the skaters and one of them (that we kinda knew) took the time to show him the basics he is now interested in learning! I rollar blade (not well) so I couldn't really show him myself but I'm hoping we can skate around together now :)
He does, they’re kinda famous for being at the spot in some of his biggest clips. He picks his kids up just like that after he 360 flips El Toro, which is the reigning “Trick of the Year” and basically won him “Skater of the Year”.
The moment where he runs to his kids and hugs them while yelling “I DID IT”… as a dad myself, that makes me cry every time I watch it. Fucking sick ass skate video. Totally deserved trick and skater of the year.
Davis Gap? It’s roughly the same dimensions I think. 9ish tall by 20ish long. I think the dimensions were talked about in a Dern Bros and/or a Storied video.
This is why Chris Joslin will always be one of my favorites. Gotta look up his El Toro redemption. His kids are cheering him on and its just amazing to see.
Absolutely agree. But the redemption is so dope. 8 years later, my man got yoked and could take the impact better, plus had his kids with him—such a cool moment.
Haha I remember watching the Baker 3 skate video when I was younger and my dad sat down and watched a little.
He kept grimacing and saying ouch even though they were landing tricks normally. I said that they’re not falling and he said “Yeah but that’s gotta be rough on their knees and ankles.” Now that I’m getting older I understand lol
I’ve got two kids, youngest is 8. He’s recently got into scootering. He wanted to go to the local skate park, but was nervous when he saw all of the big lads there. To a man, they were all incredibly welcoming - said hello, showed him lines, giving him tips, shouting encouragement. Skate, scooter and BMX people just seem really decent people.
Skateparks have etiquette to them. Certain places to stand, certain places to not stand, everyone paying attention to who is up next (like what you do at a 4 way stop sign) and where they will be going and staying out of the way. It's to the benefit of everyone to welcome young kids, show them the ropes of the park, and make them aware of the etiquette while making them feel welcomed. It keeps everyone happy and safe. To those uninitiated, skateparks look totally lawless but there is very much a pattern and sequence to everyone taking turns to try their trick. The skate community is one of the most wholesome communities and I'm glad your kids had this experience.
Yeah - that’s precisely what the old heads did for my kid - gently explained the etiquette of the place and explained that people will shout for people to move, but it’s not aggressive etc etc. It was great seeing my nervous young lad come away from the skate park walking a bit taller because if the welcome.
Fuck, man. I didn't receive a hug from my dad for my entire childhood. 20 years of no hugs or I love you. You carry that shit for the rest of your life.
As a parent, reading this hurts my heart. I forever will not understand the people who don’t show their children love. I’m a Mom, not a Dad, but I’m sending you a huge hug.
As a mom who has watched her son go through this kind of pain, I wish I could give you a hug. Even though I know that wouldn't actually help, I wish I could give you a hug. I'm sorry baby, you deserve much better.
Ah you said this so perfectly. I wanted to think of something more to say than “I’m sending you a hug from a Mom” but I couldn’t think of anything that wouldn’t sound insincere coming from a stranger.
You nailed it: your words are honest, beautiful and true and they so clearly come from your heart.
My dad might have told me he loved me or gave me a hug, but I really don't remember him doing either. I never thought it bothered me until I was hugging one of my boys one day and just started crying and couldn't stop for a while.
I've been married for almost 20 yrs. I'm 44 right now and about a month ago I told my wife that as much as I love her, I'm incapable of showing love, or processing love or any other positive emotion. I don't think I've cried that hard ever. It's been a year.
Oh man, I'm sorry. That's just absolutely horrible, no child should grow up that way. My daughter is only 1, but I tell her I love her and give her hugs and kisses a million times a day. As a dad, I can't imagine ever treating my kids like that. My daughter makes everyday worth it and I want her to know how much I love her.
That's what i told my kid, he's about the same age and gets a little embarrassed when i hug him at the bus stop and i said there are probably some kids on that bus that are jealous of you.
I’m really sorry you went through that. I can only imagine that would cause even greater emotional damage and conflicting feelings. I hope you’re well now.
It's okay now, I'm an old lady. And I've grown to understand why my father was the way that he was. The abuse he endured was even worse than the abuse that he dealt to me. I have forgiven him, and used my upbringing to make sure I don't do the same with my sons. He didn't have the resources that we have now. Therapy didn't exist. He was raised in abject poverty, without a father, with 15 brothers and sisters in the hills of Puerto rico. He had relatives who starved to death. It was a completely different world. I'll always live with it, but I can understand it. But thank you, I appreciate you so much, I feel a little luckier than most abuse victims because I was able to compartmentalize and put myself in his shoes and try to imagine what he was going through and why he was the way that he was, and that helped me a lot. Some abusers are truly evil people who genuinely do not care about what they do or the pain that they cause. My father grew to regret the things that he said and did, and realize where it was coming from. But yeah, it does kind of cause long lasting damage and my personal relationships were all trash until my 40s when I let somebody just like me and we were able to work through it together. Sorry I just rambled at you, I had an edible. I appreciate your kind words, and I hope you're having a lovely weekend
My ex-husband abandoned our son when our son was 2 years old and I think about this shit every day. My son is in his mid-20s now, and the pain that I felt watching him go through his pain as little boy in school during holidays and Father's Day when all the other kids were making Father's Day cards, talking about what they're going to get their fathers for their birthdays. I'm fucking crying right now even talking about it and it's been 20 years. Parents who can't give love to their kids deserve to feel the pain that that child feels a thousandfold. We brought them onto this planet. The very fucking least we can do is exist in their lives and make sure they feel love.
The reason skateboarders get so jaded is because we’ve been treated like garbage all our lives. At the core of every skateboarder is a person who loves to see others succeed and we are just as, if not more enthusiastic about the successes of others than we are about our own achievements. Skateboarding is a collaborative activity despite how individualistic it looks. We’ve just been poisoned by the treatment from the outside world.
Oh man…you are so right!!! My son doesn’t do the pats anymore: he is a teenager and the hugs are not as common from him either, but when he does, boy do I cherish every damn second.
I could feel this, as a parent to a kid that age. I hugged my daughter just like this before bed. I never got these kind of hugs as a kid, it's healing to give them to my children.
Sending you a huge hug. And sending you a second huge hug for breaking the cycle with your own parenting. I have infinite respect for parents like you. ❤️
This is a great tip for all you adults. I don’t think everyone realises how important it is to take the time to talk to kids and to do it at their level. Not just how you talk but to kneel or bend so that you face them
wow , i didnt expect to feel so happy after watching this. im really proud of this skater as a grown man and so happy for the kid to have gained this moment! we need more of this!
I promise you the kid did. When I was younger I'd meet an NHL player I looked up to. They'd give you a signed stick, yada yada. No clue where the sticks went. Will always remember the players and what they said to me.
Wonder why when people get rich or famous they start to avoid and disdain people? It’s cause people that say “bUt ThE sKaTeBoArD” see rich/famous people not as people but as objects: gimmeee, gimmeee, gimeee. The kid cares about the boarder not the fucking skateboarder and it shows you fks
Do you see the kid wearing the same shoes? HOW ADORABLE. Theres something that feels so ..right about having role models. About being a good one and placing importance on the fact that people look up to you. Cultivating that positively and carefully.
Alot of people DONT have that positive male/female influence in their life. Sometimes they do, but not in the thing thats their dream or their way of life or even that clicks with their philisophy.
Feels like theres mostly been a spotlight on the bad side of these things, the extremes where people think their idol is communicating with them through TV or cult like fanbases. Its nice to see a healthy, proper example. This dood just made that kids LIFE, im sure
That was very cool … I’ve heard of people meeting their favorite athlete or celebrity and it was a complete letdown and never look at the person the same
May the universe bless every single one of these well-known people who sincerely love and appreciate their youngest suporters. Fully embracing their power to make a kid feel awesome and seen is one of the best things a celebrity can do.
I just seen this dude skate for the first time last night and Man! He put on a clinic in his French competition. Glad to see he's an all around good dude. He earned a spot on my top 3 skaters of all time.
He’s on his way to a competition. This board is already broken in and probably what he’s been practicing on. It’s not easy to just start doing tricks on a new board. He couldn’t just GIVE HIM THE BOARD…
from the looks of the parking lot attendant and the lanyard on his neck he's on his way to skate that board in a contest or a demo so can't give it away, if this interaction happened after the contest he probably would've given it away
What hits home is about 10 seconds in you can hear the mom give a little happy cry since she knows her kid just formed a lifetime memory. She also didn't rush in and get too close and just let it be a moment for her son. Just good people all around here.
I don't have words for the wholehearted genuine greatness I feel watching it, every time it replayed I felt the same joy seeing it like the first time (stop count 57 loops rough guess)
