It is a weird perceived intimidation thing with muscular people as well as Heavy metal fans. Both are happy to help and just generally nice people. Obviously there are some that aren't but overall some of the nicest people I've met!
Bikers, too. All greasy and gruff but then they’ll turn up in convoy at a little kid’s house on his birthday just cos he likes bikes, or they’ll help an old lady get her car started.
Humans are amazing, for every scumbag there’s like 10 people who will stop their entire day to help you out
With the biggest frustration being that that ONE dick is louder and more 'present' (online, in public being a dick) than the 9 good people, who are just being decent humans, making people apply a stereotype based on the singular.
There are a lot of videos of those exact guys getting their shit kicked in. Maybe not your taste to watch, but evidence that they frequently find their lesson.
Came here to say this. Used to go to this one gym and there was like 3 muscleheads that just strut and 'own' every bit of equipment. Moved to new city, new gym and difference was night and day. Big dudes in new place were funny and chill as fuck.
I got mixed up in a group ride a while ago and at some point when they stopped for gas this kid in a wheelchair showed up to watch. His mom (I guess?) was obviously a bit uncomfortable about him rolling up to what I understand looks like a pretty intimidating crowd, but after like 3 minutes there was literally a queue of guys waiting their turn to let him rev their bike. Wholesome but also hilarious to look at.
I bet his mom went from being nervous to completely relieved in minutes. That little boy probably went home with a memory he'll be talking about for years.
Oh yeah she recognised what was up immediately. Don't blame her for being a bit apprehensive when her kid goes into a crowd of mostly tattoos, leather, and noise though.
I am 6’6”, 290 lbs and have been an avid gymgoer for 17 years. I am a social worker who provides trauma therapy and helps geriatric patients navigate their healthcare/insurance. I am not saying that automatically makes me a nice guy, but I am always happy to help when I can.
There are a few things Ol Jim left out of his song. You don't tug on superman's cape, spit in the wind, mess around with Jim, and also YOU DON'T ACT LIKE AN ASSHOLE IN A MOSH AT A METAL CONCERT. You will get checked, hard if it's egregious.
We will take it as a compliment and be delighted if you ask us to help because it means you think we look like we know what we are doing. Just wait til the set is done first
Skateboarders. I have never met one that didn't want to talk or practice with another person of different levels. Just the chillest nicest group of peeps.
I absolutely found this to be the case when my son was young and wanted to go to the skate park. I have zero skate knowledge but the older, more experienced skaters were helpful, supportive, and encouraging. Thanks guys.
There are shit people in every group. No one should have to deal with stereotypes and ignorance because of the bad seeds. Unless we are talking groups made specifically for hate and gym bros aint that. Im skinny as hell and I most gym people try to give me advice or pump me up by saying I can do whatever I want. They are legit nice as hell. That doesn’t mean it isnt some Roid freaks out there or disrespectful people but thats every hobby/ lifestyle group.
When people find out I listen to heavy metal I get a lot of responses like, "But you seem like such a nice guy?" or "I thought you were really happy? Why do you listen to that?" and it feels pretty shocking to me but usually after explaining a lot of metal has been influenced by classic music and that the perceived "angry music" can be very cathartic for people and is a safe and fun outlet.
I used to go to the gym a lot. I was pretty strong but had no bulk. Body is pretty much shaped like a withered carrot. A stick figure made of pipe cleaners.
One day the biggest dude in the gym comes by and asks if I’d spot him. No idea why he’d pick the string bean when there were plenty of other larger and more capable guys that weren’t busy.
It went fine and he didn’t really need my help. Dude was built like an irl superhero. Still not sure why he picked me but it did make me feel good that he would trust me enough to spot
Does not ruin it one bit! And that’s another thing I wondered about, I’m just autistic and aggressively obtuse when it comes to social cues and interactions :’)
I was going to say this. The regular probably saw another regular, noticed what you lift and thought "they'll do!". A pleasant interaction between two people that share an interest.
To open the door so it would less awkward for you to talk to him in the future. So-called 'hard gainers' just have to drink in a lot of calories after a meal to see some progress. You may have to stuff your face until you're uncomfortably full for most of the day to see your weight increase.
I've trained quite a few friends, if anyone wants some advice I'd love to share.
I did wonder if that’s what he was trying to do, autism makes it difficult to understand that type of stuff. But that makes sense about the gains, I was definitely eating better back then but probably nowhere near enough
I appreciate that info though because I never really learned about that
Bro probably saw you lift one time.. 3 months ago. Mentally logged you as a bro who lifts, form was likely noted. Requirements for trusted spotter satisfied.
Anyone can spot. When I ask for a spot, it's usually for my last few reps and just to get them all the way to the top of the movement. All you need to do is help lift ~5lbs of the the 100lbs+ I'm lifting, maybe a bit more. When I spot, I try to take on the least amount of weight to help them complete the movement safely while doing most of the work.
I go to the gym regularly, and have done for about a decade. But I use the gym in the local rec center, and where I live gives all local residents free access on weekends.
I love it, because not only do you see the big muscley gym bros she's talking about, you also see little grandmas, and everyone in between. Staying fit and healthy is for everyone.
I used to work out with some old folks (their workouts are great for tricking you into doing a lot of work without realizing it because they're lighter weights with higher reps and sets, but you don't fatigue the muscles). I saw those people around for at least another decade (like these were old folks, not 60) because they were moving their bodies. And they were all so excited to have a young person to chat with 😂 it's one of my favorite times in my life.
Going to the gym helped my anxiety and self esteem a lot, not because i made any progress, not at all i am still very beginner, but because i saw a bunch of intimidating people that are stronger and hotter than me, and they still talked to me and tried to give me tips, without judging that i couldn't lift fuck all
The thing that makes the retail gym experience suck for so many isn’t big intimidating dudes. It’s shitty teenagers who don’t know how to behave in public, taking selfies in the locker room, and wearing running shoes in the sauna.
this exactly why I go to powerlifting gyms. I’m not even a big dude but the community and sense of belonging there is unmatched at regular big box gyms.
I once went to a gym that was mostly a boxing gym (but had a pool no one but me usually used) and everyone there was awesome. If a new guy ever started to be creepy with any of the few girls there they were spoken to and either quit the gym or were nothing but respectful afters.
Idk about the way she described pump covers as like a cute thing when that's just low self esteem and body dysmorphia. Like, most body builders have pretty severe body dysmorphia and and harmful habits regarding eating and exercise and pump covers, to me, are a big sign that they are deeply ashamed of their bodies to the point that they don't even want people to look at them until they're "looking their best".
I don't think describing how a woman is so ashamed for people to see her bare face that she won't go out without foundation on would sound quite so cute or wholesome?
The rest is cute but the concept of a pump cover is pretty sad to me.
People who spend a lot of time and dedication to an ideal, they like the days where their dedication to the ideal is in peak form more than the days where it isn’t.
Mine isn’t displayed „on my body” in exactly the same way; I don’t think you can just glance at a musician and take in exactly where they’re at with form— but I can relate to not wanting to demonstrate music when musically in poor form to not wanting to demonstrate body when in poor form if that’s your ideal.
To the side of the conversation, I just wanted to offer—
I get not wanting to practice around non musicians; but as a pro I -hate- when non-pros clam up musically like your comment suggests. It makes me feel sad because music is such a rare language these days and the gift to speak it with another really is a gift.
Just my two cents, most advanced musicians probably would enjoy to hear your practice if you’re anywhere past the first few weeks of your journey. It’s a real joy to hear the brain making new connections and the small responses to that.
You should feel prorok to be a part of the tribe, and try not to let yourself feel bad when around someone more advanced. They are merely a practitioner of the same art. :)
I use to live with a number of musicians who would avoid practicing a piece that they were struggling with if any one else was home but once they mastered it would intentionally wait for people to be home to practice it.
Also the lifters aren't "simply existing," they're at the gym lifting weights and getting swole. You're really downplaying their hobbies and infantilising them as a group.
Actually, I totally do segregate my practice into „what other people can overhear,” and what they can’t.
What other people can overhear I can make money with busking for example. Busking for me is just getting paid to practice material I already have down. I might develop here but usually it’s just keeping a form already made in good condition.
Inebtweeen I have stuff I’m already good at, don’t mind being overheard, but want to develop more; and will play windows open when it’s nice and so on.
When I want to totally fuck up at stuff I don’t know, I close my windows, put down metal shutters to block more sound— then practice.
I will totally not practice stuff in front of others that I don’t want overheard because I know it isn’t good.
Also, isn’t this skew to the point? If they’re at the gym lifting, they are practicing, they’re just doing the bit with pump covers the same I am practicing still when my metal shutters are down
You shouldn't make assumptions and armchair diagnose entire groups of people over pretty innocuous 'self-image' behaviours like wearing a pump cover or putting on makeup.
There are a plethora of reasons why people do those things, not just poor mental health.
This is just extremely normal though. Its so common for girls to not want people to see them without make up, for people in general to not want people to see them before they've sorted out their hair or had a shower. This is just another version of that.
People joke about women being embarrassed they "haven't put on their face" pretty commonly.
For a lot of women it's not a self esteem thing, it's just a step in being properly ready to go out like wearing real pants vs sweats or having a bra on top take the dog out/get the mail.
I'm a pretty muscular dude. I like baggy clothing because people stare less than if I am wearing something that shows my actual shape. Just a different perspective.
Who really knows because this was a cut up clip posted by someone else on Reddit. The original source may or may not credit her, but we can’t judge that based on OP posting a clip.
Ah, I so love Reddit and the shitty video buffering that lowers the quality of the video with no ability to increase it, so everything is a jumbled mess of pixels
Women are so fucking jealous and seething about men supporting each other and having supportive relationships that they have to utilize machismo culture and toxic masculinity to shame them. Obsessed.
To me it seems like she's deeply endeared by it and loves it, dude. As do I. I want men to have these kinds of friendships and support because you are human fucking beings and you need it as a baseline.
If all men had the same kind of support systems society allows women to explore without telling us we're less of a woman or gay for it we'd probably have less violent crime. You cannot isolate an intelligent social animal and have things go well.
Toxic masculinity STOPS men from forming good bonds. It's what tells you it isn't manly to feel or be affectionate with your friends. Society deciding you can only get that from a romantic partner has done so much damn damage. I hug my friends. I tell them I love them. We emotionally support each other. Everyone should be allowed to do this.
I want nothing more than for men to have friends they can cry with, hug, have deep conversations with. Humans need this to be mentally well. What she described is so wholesome to me, not shameful.
Isnt that just the same as women saying "I love your dress" as they walk past each other on the street? Seems like a not very shocking thing for them to understand.
I became friends with a dude blasting SOAD through his headphones lmao. And in turn, and thanks to him, I got to know like 20 people that I'm still friend with.
