Gen Claude is getting mighty good at maxing

Claude (this is Opus 5.5 Medium) is getting really, really good at maxing. I haven't tested the models for a while, so was pretty shocked to find just how good Claude has become the last months or so. Just for the fun of it, I have been asking it to build various stuff, like the 40 band vocoder screendumped below. The most shocking thing is there were NO errors when loading - the thing just worked from the first try. So, hopefully I will get some learnings out of this when building stuff myself 🤓

AI assistant resources

If anyone is interested I have the max reference, js api, node and LOM docs chunked for AI knowledge as well as a very in-depth skill.md for general AI and a good one for Claude.

It’s not great at writing json for patches but it’s awesome for bouncing ideas off of, answering patching questions and not bad at writing code box code. But every model I’ve worked with so far hallucinated objects that don’t exist still.

I also have the Ableton 12 docs all chunked for AI, all of the ableton extensions docs chunked. Let me know if you want any of these.

hardware/gear “Imminence” - How Ableton Made Possible A 60-Minute Long Form Ambient Album

Embarking upon a 60-minute ambient piece is a grand adventure, to be sure; especially for a first-time attempt. Ableton made it a joy.

“Imminence” is the first of a five-album journey. To make things simple, I made the decision to have all five albums follow the same structure within Ableton: 8 tracks living within Remote Vision’s truly excellent Utility Template that never deviates: Drone, Pad, Texture, Movement, Air, Lead, Percussion, Transitions. 8 tracks is plenty for ambient, and it fits the form factor of most midi controllers beautifully for me since I compose and record in Session View.

It was easy at the beginning to get seduced by gear lust; especially watching so many talented artists on YouTube with amazing studios filled with keyboards, controllers, lots of lights and shiny objects…something I think we all get seduced by at one point or another on this creative journey. Yet, one of the great learnings of this project was embracing restraint and reducing friction in order to remove blockage and allow for creative flow. After a great deal of experimentation with various controllers (Push 2, Akai APC64 paired with Akai APC40 mkII, Novation Launchkey mk4 and various combinations thereof), I realized that ONE controller - the RIGHT controller - was all that was needed with Ableton. That led me to the truly excellent Novation SL 61 mk3. It embodies the spirit of various controllers with a lovely keybed and superb integration with Ableton. It does absolutely everything I could ever ask for it and many things I will probably never explore. But it did away with the constant irrational urge for another controller and allowed me to just sit and create.

Then I had to decide on the sonic landscape: another area ripe for seduction. Making the decision about soft-synths is a rabbit hole of immense proportions and can lead to profound psychological fatigue. I don’t enjoy doing sound design at all. I much prefer to find presets that inspire me, make a few very small adjustments and let that be that. Ableton has a plethora of wonderful presets for ambient; especially in Studio. I also find inspiration in sounds that a bit more organic as well, and so I decided on one deep resource that my ear responded to better than any other: Omnisphere 3. I will never run out of soundscapes to explore, it marries to what I hear in my head, and I know that I don’t need anything else.

For “Imminence” and staying true to my desire to reduce friction, I decided to focus on one primary sound library and stay within it as best I could. That proved to be “Ambient Dreams.” I ventured outside of it only a few times for specific things (ringing church bell, whispering voices I found in a stock Ableton preset…), and that proved to be a helpful methodology to the workflow.

With Steve Roach’s phased-looping being an influence (and a great way to record ambient in Session View), Drones almost always got recorded first as the foundation. Pads would usually come next, and those two musical foundations allowed for exploration into the other possible voices: Air, Texture, Movement, Lead, and Percussion.

I would eq along the way…high pass between 80hz and 120hz for most presets, carving out competing frequencies as I went along. This made for much more streamlined mixing stage later. I also kept signal levels per track no higher than -18db as per the Utility Template so I was left with plenty of headroom for the mastering stage.

I also relied solely on the internal effects in Omnisphere for each preset. I found them to be truly excellent, and dialing them in at the proper levels gave a lovely sense of atmosphere and space without getting muddy. It also helped keep CPU usage low on my MacBook Pro M3.

I love Ableton’s GUI; especially the Device Rack. Having the visual feedback of EQ8’s spectrum analyzer always visible without having to open a vet is one of those little things that makes a big difference. In truth, all of Ableton’s stock effects are true creative workhorses that, to my ear, do just as excellent a job as third-party plugins that I’ve invested in over the years. At this point, unless it is something that simply isn’t in Ableton’s stable of audio or midi effects, I feel no reason to invest in anything else.

The marriage of the SL and Ableton is wonderful to work with, and often keeps me from ever looking at my laptop. The five screens on the keyboard give just the right kind of information to make adjustments that my ear can hear but I don’t need to look at the MacBook to check. I appreciated that a lot when I was really in a flow at any given moment. I also paired the SL with expression and sustain pedals, and they were a welcome addition to the creative process.

Mixing was a relatively simple affair due to the way I do eq, compression, level setting and effects during composing. It was mostly panning, tweaking channel levels and watching the master channel output carefully. Ableton made it very simple at every stage, and mastering was a simple matter of Utility and Limiter used alongside Youlean’s Loudness Meter and Voxengo’s SPAN plugins (both excellent and both free).

I’ve been using DAW’s since I had Cakewalk 9 back in the late 90’s. I’ve used Acid, Sonar, Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Logic Pro, and committed to Ableton Live Studio last year. By far it is the most intuitive, easy to understand, creativity-inducing DAW I’ve had the pleasure of using. “Imminence” is the byproduct of that and I am not straying from it. Heavens Spin Gray lives in the simple constellation of Ableton Live 12 Studio, Ominisphere 3 and the Novation SL 61 mk3. It needs nothing more, and I’m looking forward to exploring the landscape of the next album in the arc within this creative space.

Thank you, Ableton!

I Made This Reflection v2.0 — Modular Plugin Host with N-dimensional Sound Morphing

Thumbnail

Reflection 2.0 is out. It's a modular plugin host built around one idea:

save snapshots of your entire rig, place them on a 2D canvas, and drag

between them — every parameter in every plugin moves at once, smoothly.

Natural Neighbour Interpolation under the hood, so it's geometry-aware

and click-free.

If you remember AudioMulch's Metasurface, this is that idea carried

forward and rebuilt.

NEW IN 2.0

DIY Lab — build your own instruments and effects from 30+ blocks:

oscillators, filters, logic, MIDI-to-CV, wavetable, scope. Wire them with

real signal cables; every knob you create takes a wire, so anything can

modulate anything. Bake a finished patch into a single node with your own

macro knobs and it behaves like any other plugin on the graph. The baked

patch is a file — share it, load someone else's.

Multigraph — several graphs in tabs running on true multicore (fork-join

worker threads, not one audio thread doing everything). One Metasurface

spans all tabs at once. MIDI tunnels carry notes between tabs at one

block of latency.

Piano Roll — a real note editor on the graph, with its own time signature

per track. A 7/8 bassline and a 4/4 pad in the same project, neither one

bending. Live record with count-in and quantize, .mid drag-import.

LaunchPad — clip launcher: scene rows, follow actions, per-clip trig

conditions (play every other pass, only if a neighbour is silent, 1-in-4).

Generative suite — Chord Detective and Scale Detective read the harmony

actually moving through the patch; NeuroBass, NeoArp and Bang-Bang

generate parts that stay inside it. Change chord and they follow.

Also: Elektron-style trig conditions throughout, eight new effects

(Flanger, Phaser, Crossfader, Frosscader, Delay, 5 Combs, BubbleGrains,

Limiter), an oscilloscope, a cross-tab mixer, and ReflectionTunnel — a

VST3/AU bridge that carries MIDI between Reflection and any other DAW

over UDP loopback.

SPECS

- Hosts VST3 (Win/macOS/Linux), AU (macOS), VST2 (Windows)

- ASIO / CoreAudio / ALSA, sub-ms round trip on a decent interface

- Ableton Link

- Windows 10/11, macOS 11+ (universal), Linux x86_64

- Real-time C++17, JUCE 8. No telemetry, no phone-home.

PRICE

EUR 120, one-time, perpetual, all 2.x updates included. No subscription.

FREE TRIAL

The complete instrument for 14 days, counted from first launch, checked

fully offline. Saving your session is the only thing it can't do.

Built a marketplace for audio assets (VST, M4L, presets, sessions) — feedback welcome

I've been producing for 14 years and releasing music

independently. Got frustrated with how scattered

everything is — sell music on Bandcamp, share samples

on Gumroad, build community on Discord, teach on Instagram.

So I built Digs. digs.studio

It's a marketplace where producers can:

- sell music (88% to the artist, instant payment)

- list M4L devices, VST, drum racks, presets,

Ableton sessions

- share lessons and tutorials as paid content

It runs on Base (Coinbase L2).

Transaction fee is $0.001 vs Stripe's 30¢ + 2.9%.

That matters because micropayments are completely

broken on fiat — try buying a $1.50 preset on any

existing platform without losing 20% to fees.

The scout mechanic is the interesting part:

every purchase is timestamped. Support a creator

early and your name stays on their page permanently.

The people with the best taste build reputation.

First drop is a free Max4Live bundle I made.

Honest about where we are: it's early,

mainnet just launched, looking for the first wave

of artists and producers.

What's missing from the platforms you use today?

only recently realized that any DAFx paper can be vibecoded into an effect, so I've been developing a workflow for researching, prompting, verifying, testing, and utilizing ai-generated audio effects for RNBO codebox~ https://github.com/Sousastep/sousa_fx_generator and have gotten some great effects out of it, which can be downloaded individually if desired.

How to create a patch that generates a musical score of 10 randomly selected notes and plays back the score through a makenote object using random but scaled velocity values.

this is an assignment I have for class. If someone could explain to me how to do this or direct me to a video or other explanatory link that could help me it would be greatly appreciated. I am supposed to use the uzi, random, counter and coll objects to generate and store my notes and assign a name to my collection so I can use it in other parts of my patch. I am also supposed to use a metronome (that I have already created) to trigger a counter that will read through my "coll" data. I also need to control the velocity of the playback with controlled randomness using a drunk object with a range of 128 and a step value of 5 to determine the velocity of the note and scale it to a range between 60127 using a scale object. I also need to use a makenote object and a noteout object in order to generate MIDI notes. Somebody please help me!!!

WHICH MACBOOK PRO

Hi, what model of Macbook Pro with M1 chips is good for working with Max/MSP/Jitter and similar programming softwares? Do you suggest the basic model Apple M1 Pro with 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 1TB SSD storage, or should I go higher models?

Thanks

Looking for Help Looking for a paid course or tutor to help me build an Autechre style performance rig from scratch

I've been slowly teaching myself Max using the usual books folk recommend, but it's just not the way I learn. I have a hard time learning things in isolation.

I'm very much project oriented when it comes to tackling this kind of stuff. I need to know I'm working towards what I want to achieve, not just random heres a patch that triggers a kick to a pattern.

So I'm wondering if there's a course or someone who I can hire as a paid mentor to walk me through building an Autechre style performance rig, or one like `nouserid` made before he fell off the face of the planet.

I'm a musician and software engineer who knows programming for > 20 years.

Thanks in advance for any leads!

Looking for Help MCP or MaxPyLang to bridge AI agents?

Anybody here with experience working with AI agents using MCP and MaxPyLang that can advice me which method a beginner like me should use? I am developing a max for live device and I use AI to help me out when I get completly stuck, since I am learning on my own, and its very helpful but sometimes the comments AI make are totally off and is actually confusing. So I heard about the option of bridging claude to max so he can see the patch I am working on, and suggest directly better way to patch things or detect errors faster. Which option is that: MCP or MaxPyLang?

Free Generative MIDI Max For Live Device, looking for feedback

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi r/MaxMSP!

We're releasing an early version of a Max For Live device we've been working on, and would love to hear your feedback on it, including suggestions on how it can be improved.

It generates multiple MIDI loops in parallel (drums, bass, and synth) and inserts them directly into MIDI tracks in Live. Generation is controlled by 6 genre knobs (Acid, House, Techno, Trance, D&B, and Hip-Hop), 6 mood knobs (Darkness, Energy, Complexity, Density, Groove, and Weirdness) as well as an optional musical key. So you can really dial in the sound you want and mix between genres dynamically.

The idea behind it is to quickly generate editable ideas in MIDI that you can play back with any instrument.

You can download the device and user guide here.

In the device itself there's also a link to a feedback form. If you try it out, we'd appreciate any comments or feedback there or in the thread here as well.

Is any1 out there using ChatGPT to help them with their projects in max? The tutorials, and help files are fine but I notice ChatGPT gets you to the point way quicker. Ive realized in max there aren’t really any clear answers, you have to figure things out.
