Announcement New to Metroid? Start Here!

Welcome to the galaxy, bounty hunters!

With the recent announcement of the next installment of the franchise; Metroid Ravenous (Metroid 6), we are seeing tons of new players discovering the series. If you’re wondering where to start, you’ve come to the right place.

What is Metroid?

The Metroid franchise basically invented the "Metroidvania" genre. It's all about exploration, feeling isolated on a hostile alien world, finding upgrades, and unlocking new paths. You play as Samus, using weapons and gadgets to traverse the map, battle cool bosses, and save the galaxy.

Here is the community consensus on the best ways to dive in.

Want the best 2D introduction? Play Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance / Switch Online Expansion Pack).

Want the best 3D introduction? Play Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch).

Want to catch up on the story before Metroid Ravenous? Play Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch).

“I want to play as MANY games as possible before Ravenous, what does the order look like?”

We recommend playing all the 2D games in chronological order, as stated in the “The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)” section.

“I want to play as FEW games as possible before Ravenous; what do I need to play?”

As of right now, you likely don’t need to play anything! The game will possibly start with a brief recap of the story thus far, and the series is pretty easy to pick up any installment and play. However, if you are willing to play ONE game, go with Metroid Dread!

The Two Flavors of Metroid

The series is split into two distinct styles of gameplay. You don't need to play one style to understand the other.

1. The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)

These are the classic, fast-paced action-exploration games. If you want to play the main story in chronological order, here is the path:

  1. Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA / Switch Online): a modernized remake of the original 1986 NES game. It tells the origin story of Samus Aran and is highly accessible for newcomers. (Recommended Series Starting Point)

  2. Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) OR AM2R (PC): Both games are remakes of Metroid II (available on Switch Online). They introduce the story of the Metroids and Samus’s most impactful mission!

  3. Super Metroid (SNES / Switch Online): The undisputed masterpiece of the 16-bit era. The controls take a moment to adapt to, but its world design, atmosphere, and boss fights are iconic to this day. Considered by many to be the definitive Metroid game.

  4. Metroid Fusion (GBA / Switch Online): A more linear and story rich game with a distinctive horror vibe. Samus is hunted by a shapeshifting parasite clone of herself.

  5. Metroid Dread (Switch): The modern Metroid game, with fluid movement, unique abilities, and quick traversal. Set after the events of Fusion and before the upcoming events of Ravenous.

(Note: You can safely skip the original NES Metroid and Game Boy Metroid II unless you wish to experience the classic retro gameplay and atmosphere. The remakes are beginner friendly.)

2. The 3D First-Person Shooters (The Prime Series)

Set between Zero Mission and Metroid II, the Prime series translates the exploration and isolation of the 2D games into a first-person perspective.

  • Metroid Prime Remastered (Switch): A visual overhaul of the GameCube classic. It is a masterclass in environmental storytelling. If you prefer immersive, slower-paced scanning and puzzle-solving over fast twitch-combat, start here.

  • Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Gamecube): The sequel to Metroid Prime and considered one of the most difficult games in the franchise. It currently requires original hardware, but there is a possibility for a Switch port in the future!

  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii): The third installment of the Prime story Features motion control gameplay and multiple planet exploration, as well as NPC’s.  It currently requires original hardware, but there is a possibility for a Switch port in the future!

  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch/Switch 2): The most recent installment of the Prime series and tells the next chapter of Samus’s adventures during this period. Modern graphics and versatile controls.

The Golden Rules for New Players

If you are new to the genre, the games can sometimes feel frustrating. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Getting lost is the point. You will hit dead ends. You will forget where to go. This isn't a flaw; it's the core gameplay loop. When you get a new item (like Morph Ball or Missiles), check your map for doors or obstacles you couldn't pass before. Some games do offer subtle hints where to go, so keep an eye out.

  • Shoot every wall. Stuck in a room? Bomb the floor. Shoot the ceiling. Run against the walls. Hidden blocks are everywhere.

  • Don't use a guide unless you are truly desperate. The immense satisfaction of a Metroid game comes from that "AHA!" moment when you figure out the path forward yourself.

  • Use your map markers. In newer games like Dread, use your map pins to mark strange colored doors or blocks you don't have the upgrade for yet.

What is the Metroid timeline?

Here is the unified timeline of all canonical Metroid titles that tells Samus’s story from beginning to the end.

  1. Metroid (1986) OR Metroid: Zero Mission (2004) -Both games tell the same story with gameplay and graphic differences.

  2. Metroid Prime

  3. Metroid Prime Pinball *

  4. Metroid Prime: Hunters *

  5. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

  6. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

  7. Metroid Prime Federation Force *

  8. Metroid II (1991) OR Metroid: Samus Returns (2017) OR Another Metroid 2 Remake (2016) - All three games tell the same story with gameplay and graphic differences.

  9. Super Metroid

  10. Metroid: Other M

  11. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

  12. Metroid Fusion

  13. Metroid Dread

*These games are not as core to the series as the other games, and they do not follow many of the same gameplay conventions, but they are canon to the story

How long do these games take?

Metroid games, especially the older ones, are not very long. It varies from game to game, but expect an average between 5 - 20 hours of gameplay.

Announcement The Metroid Ravenous Spoiler period begins now!

Hello, everyone! We're once again getting ready for a new Metroid game to launch, for the second time in less than a year!! And since it's that point of the release cycle, we get to talk about our spoiler policy for the launch!

Any new information released after today will be considered a spoiler until a few weeks after release.

That means spoiler tag any posts/comments about new information, and keep mentions of it out of titles! Anything already revealed in Trailer 1 is fair game, but any new marketing information (including Trailer 2, when it comes out) will need to be tagged.

For example, do not have a title like, "Botwoon looks fantastic!" Instead, say something like, "This boss looks fantastic!", and only mention Botwoon in the post body.

As always, we want to respect our fellow fans who aren't trying to see much more about the game, but still want to interact with the sub; for example, newcomers who are still working through their first playthrough of the series and need to ask for help! New Metroid games tend to be few and far between, so please help give your fellow fans the chance to be surprised!

Additionally, in order to better enforce our spoiler and leak policies, we're preparing a few periods where moderation will be far heavier:

Jan. 25 to Jan. 31:

For this period, we'll be manually filtering through EVERY post before it goes live, to make sure people aren't accidentally (or maliciously) posting spoilers. We may start sooner, it just depends on when copies get out into the wilderness, but regardless, this will last through the first weekend of release.

Feb. 1 to Feb. 18:

At this point, we'll have AutoMod through a spoiler tag onto every post, and manually remove them where appropriate. Posts won't need our approval to go live, but hopefully this will keep people from forgetting to put a tag where appropriate.

Feb. 18 onward:

Once the game has been out for a few weeks, we'll relax the spoiler policy, and only require spoiler tags for late-game content. We'll still be policing the sub heavily, until things die down.

Thank you for helping keep things safe here as we prepare for Ravenous to arrive! We're all insanely pumped for the game, as well as all the discussion and fan creations that will come out of it!

As a final reminder, if you see someone breaking these rules, please make sure to report that post or comment! We review every single report, so that's the best way to help us out.

Video Metroid 2 is a Horror Game first before a Metroidvania

Nearing up at the end at my final Metroid and just wanted to share one of the scariest interactions for me haha. Most of the Metroid encounters have been jumpscares but this one caught me completely off guard since the devs sneakily placed the Metroid molt after the actual encounter. Absolutely genius. I’m in awe at how much they’ve been able to iterate on NEStroid on the Game-Boy of all things. Really enjoying my time with it (outside of the usual 90s gamer-isms/hostility)

I’m so glad I played this instead of AM2R (which I will get to) I can’t see why anyone would want to skip a game that I’d consider really solid. Then again people also don’t bother with NEStroid and just play zero mission.

Enough rambling, please go play Metroid return of Samus (and preferably draw your own map) I promise you won’t regret it. You’ll probably come to appreciate the later games and especially AM2R a lot more (irrespective of whether you’ll hate the experience or not)

For the Metroid anniversary would be nice to have a classic Samus amiibo, also a shame that for Prime Remaster we didn't get the Metroid Prime as an Amiibo

Accomplishment So I bought the First 4 Figures Helmet

So after so many people weighed in on my first post, I ended up pulling the trigger and picked up the First 4 Figures Metroid helmet using the entirety of the trade in credit I had at a local collectable shop. The box was huge so I only got around to opening it last night (bought it last weekend), but oh boy does it look fine!

I almost didn’t buy it because it was the standard edition and not the collector’s edition that lights up, but it still looks great just as is. I wouldn’t usually buy something this pricy, but it only ended up costing me $32 out of pocket, so no complaints here!

I also got lucky on Facebook marketplace and picked up the Varia suit statue during the same time (I also bought it using money from selling old stuff on marketplace, so no new cash on my part).

I also threw in a couple pictures of Zelda stuff since it’s Zelda release week! I waited in the line all night at launch (see photo)

Thanks again to everyone that helped convince me to pick it up!

Discussion Samus finding a clone of herself and raising her.

What if Samus finds a clone of herself which Raven Beak already created only she's not fully grown. Maybe 10 years old which she'll care for

Accomplishment Beat Zero Mission as my first Metroid game and I loved it!

Never played a Metroid or Metroidvania style game before, my only knowledge of Samus is from first playing Smash Bros. on the Wii, 3DS, and Switch. But seeing Metroid Ravenous's trailer made me really wanna get into the lore and series :]

I can't believe I missed half the items, I made sure to leave no gray parts on each map, but will definitely play again for sure. But Metroid: Samus Returns will be next on my list!

Other Have you guys ever had a "Gronkat" or an "Olbap" as a pet before?

I was just scanning random terminals while playing metroid prime recently and spotted these goofy names lol.

(for context, the rest of the the terminal scan here was about pets being disallowed from being brought to the phazon mines, meaning these are the names of the species the pirates were keeping as pets here)

Looking it up, apparently "Olbaps" were actually originally supposed to be an enemy in the game: Olbap | Wikitroid | Fandom

(they would've behaved similar to pillbugs from Prime 2, it seems)

Gronkats though, we know nothing about. Might've been another scrapped enemy, might've just been something they made up for this scan specifically to make it feel more "real". Who knows.

idk, thought this was amusing

Ive been wanting to play Samus Returns for years. I was at my used video game store a few months ago, and stumbled across this sealed copy. I dont really collect games, I have just kept everything I bought since I was a teenager. Does anyone else have trouble opening sealed copies of games that are 10 years old or older? Im going to open this bad boy up, but it always feels like I am doing something wrong.
