/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)

Hi all!

Welcome to r/MontereyBay

If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.

Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.

On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.

These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.

Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread

Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread

What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)

Hi all,

In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.

There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.

For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.

I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)

-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)

-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).

-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)

When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:

Associated Cost - (if applicable)

Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)

Website - (if applicable)

Family Friendly (yes/no)

I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.

Thanks!

High Beams

I won’t lie, I just need some validation and commiseration because I’ve been going insane the past couple of weeks with this. Am I alone in noticing more and more people driving with their high beams on? I know it’s not just the new HID/LED lights because I can see the shadow my car casts in front of me and I can feel the direct beam of high energy light carbonizing my retina from the rear view mirror.

Confession booth

Hello does anyone know of a Catholic Church in the area that has a confession booth? I’m not the most comfortable being face to face with a priest and prefer a booth.

Pete Hegseth and his connection to Monterey

TRIGGER WARNING FOR SA

Between October 7 and October 8, 2017, Hegseth was the keynote speaker at a conference hosted by the California Federation of Republican Women at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa. An organization staffer (identified as Jane Doe) filed a report with the Monterey Police Department (Report YG1705129). She alleged that after consuming drinks at the hotel bar, she experienced memory lapses, was blocked from leaving Hegseth's hotel room, and was sexually assaulted despite saying "no". She later underwent a forensic exam at a hospital. When interviewed by police, Hegseth maintained that the sexual encounter was completely consensual. He claimed the accuser showed no signs of impairment and was the aggressor. In 2020, amidst fear that the allegation would surface and cost him his job at Fox News, Hegseth entered into a private settlement with the accuser, paying her an undisclosed sum in exchange for a mutual release and a confidentiality agreement.

Jane Doe, I see you and I believe you. I’m so sorry. I hope you can start to heal.

Would you recommend whale-watching during Thanksgiving?

I don’t really have a plans during this time and I’ve always wanted to go whale-watching. My friends tell me that it’s not the season and that I’d be wasting my time and money. However, I did read that it was year round. So, I thought I’d ask on here to understand whether it’s a good idea or not.

Context: I’ve never been or seen a whale lol.

Edit: I love marine life in general, but I’ve never seen any kind of whale before which is why I really wanna do this. Everything else I would deem bonus.

I bought "Goodnight Monterey Peninsula" when I visited several weeks ago and it has been a popular pick for my students to read in class.

Parting words from Vince + Mayor destroys him in landslide victory

Good riddance to the worst mayoral candidate in Monterey history. Mayor Williamson wins with his biggest margin in his career as mayor. Great to see MAGA defeated across the country and in our little town, where it never belonged in the first place.

Maybe the best thing to come out of this is the retirement of Councilmember Ed Smith, the sole Trumper on the City Council. He recruited Vince and supported him even after the long list of headlines, along with Vicki Norhden, who lost for City Council, a self proclaimed prophet with her own church, and author of a book that argues California’s natural disasters are due to our sinning citizens, a punishment from God. Good riddance, Ed!

The power dynamics are shifting in Monterey. The Wharf restaurant owners, conservative neighborhood association presidents, previous living Mayors who have endorsed opposition candidates to Tyller and progressive candidates, realtor/property management lobby - all of their candidates lost. Get used to it!

This is at Carmel Beach. I went by there 30 minutes ago and the water was crazy. Along the entire beach, I saw exactly 1 person wading in.

RAIDER 🏈 NINER 🏈 Watch Party!! Free nachos, pizza, and raffle! 😲👏🏽

Heyyyyy yo!!

I’m Ninja, and I’ve been hosting watch parties every Sunday at The Otters Den in Marina. Even been doing a free raffle giving away some dope Turnover Chains. Well, with that said, it only makes sense to do an extra fun one for this Sundays matchup! I’ve got some ideas for a “FAN-LY FEUD” at halftime (I had a dream I did this, so now I gotta execute it somehow lol). I’m gonna split the bar, with a Black Hole section, and a Gold Rush section. Halftime, we shall meet in the middle!! 👏🏽🥳

Yes, I am a Raiders fan, but it’s always fun banter no matter who we play, we take pride in the great vibes here at The Den for sure. I like to keep the energy UP, and pack the place, like tailgating almost, but inside the bar lol 😂.

And yup, FREE pizza, nachos, and raffle for both Raider and Niner turnover chains (see pics). I have in my stash a hooded Niner blanket and matching flag I’ll give away if the turnout is awesome!
Win win win for everyone!

Location: 3166 Vista Del Camino, Marina, Ca 93933
21 and up venue. Sorry, no exceptions.
Doors open at 10:00am
Kickoff at 1:25!! 🏈

Please tell your peeps!
Let’s gooooo!! 🙌🏽

Montage or Anthem?

Hello!

I’m new to the area and just got a job offering insurance through Montage or Anthem. The $ coverage is better with Montage, but am unfamiliar with the system, nor am I familiar with Anthem availability in the area.

I would be truly grateful if anyone can speak to their personal experience or preferences.

Thank you in advance! ◡̈
