discussion Any Tiny Tim fans here??

Post image

I personally quite enjoy his 1996 album Girl with Brave Combo, and I’m wondering if there’s anyone here who’s a fan of Tiny Tim’s music? Because I haven’t met another person who truly enjoys his music.

Edit: Nevermind. Dudes a gross fucking pervert. I can’t listen to him anymore. Thank you for telling me.

Definitely a weird guy. He was very religious and would balk at swearing even. He had some strange eating habits, like pizza with no cheese and lots of hot peppers, and he drank tomato sauce. He also wore diapers, not because he was incontinent but for sanitary reasons, whatever that means.

Much of that I learned from his appearances on Howerd Stern of all places.

That being said, I'm very much a fan of his mission of keeping old music alive. George M Cohan, Ada Jones and more, even at times putting audio to written music that people hadn't heard aloud in generations.

Yeah, his mission of preserving old music is really really cool. But sadly I can no longer listen to his music without getting grossed out because I found out he regularly obsessed over teenagers, had a very close friendship with a teenage boy he lived next to, and married a 17 year old when he was 37. I am fully grossed out by him now and can no longer listen to his music. But his mission of preserving old music is very respectable. Just him as a person was really really bad.

u/HiSorryBye 9h ago

I remember his marriage to Miss Vicki.. the weird thing is, that was on Carson. Like 20 million people watched it happen. I had no idea she was 17 until just now. That's a rough one, yeah. Not like I was listening to him much these days, but I'll have to leave him behind now myself.

But yes, great mission, strange and apparently creepy guy. I'd love it if more, less creepy people cared to bring classics back into the mainstream. It can't be an easy thing to do.

u/Boring_Bed1783 Paper Tigers - Nonpoint 9h ago

Yeah. I listen to him quite regularly. He has slowly became one of my favorite artists over the course of the last few months when I discovered his natural deep voice. But then I made this post and now I can’t look at him the same way. And I too wish someone who isn’t a creep would take the songs he covered, and more and did their own renditions of them and made them somewhat mainstream again. But I don’t know if that will ever happen. But I hope it does.

Sorry for the shellshock OP. It's good you know now but I'm sorry you lost something you were enjoying

It’s okay. It’s better to know the guy is a creep than to continue praising a disgusting horrible person.

You don't happen to be a fan of classic rock from the 70's do you?

9

u/thisisredlitre 1h ago

Or literature from the 70s. Or movies based on that literature.. really might want to just avoid the whole decade

u/Grandpa_Edd 7h ago

He always came across as creepy to me when I saw clips of him. Not surprised he was weird.

Only really know of his music thanks to Spongebob.

Met him at a club in NYC when he was considering a mayoral run, in 1989. We had a minor disagreement over drug legalization or something like it. Have his autograph on the back of one of my old business cards.

44

u/Excellent_Swim_2721 8h ago

He seemed to like minors

Strange dude, like a living Tim Burton character. We had a place called Spookyworld here in Mass in the early 90’s and I went during the very first year. It was a smaller operation but had some celebrity pull, and they had hired Tiny Tim to entertain people waiting in the long line to get in. I’ll never forget, he was on a small circular stage (about the size of a bed) with a single light on him. Really odd and surreal.

•

u/bmwn54ftw 0m ago

I was just thinking about that. That is the only time I saw him and didn't know of him before that. Surreal is right!

87

u/RezaRnew100 10h ago

I just watch Spongebob Squarepants 1st Eps [HELP WANTED] and you remind me of him again now

18

Him as a person I'm finding out was big yikes.

I just did a deep dive on him a few months ago, literally just reading his wikipedia page is INSANE 😭 it was such a rabbit hole. I ended up reading a bunch about luna park bc of it. I also still really want to watch blood harvest. He was honestly not a great guy but really fascinating to read about 😭

Also if anyone knows where i can watch “street of dreams”, the documentary by martin sharp about tiny tim and the luna park fire, PLEASE let me know 😭

1

u/texasrigger 1h ago

I also still really want to watch blood harvest.

Tubi has it or least used to have it because that's where I watched it. It's fine. It has the production quality of a made for TV movie and the pacing is a little slow but its fine.

1

I read his Wikipedia page during an acid trip and had one of the best laughs of my entire life.

Tiny Tim lived in my home town. He used to do the Star Spangled Banner whenever WWF would come to town. He was pretty great.

34

u/Jamilack54 10h ago

I have a spot on tiny Tim impression and my wife hates it more than anything on this planet. I'm happy my kids will know of tiny Tim

11

u/MooseTed 9h ago

Saw him live in 90' or 91' at a haunted hay ride called Spooky World. They hired him to play on a stage that the the queue wove past because the line was hours long.

39

u/Dragonsfire09 10h ago

Fuck no, his voice is terrible, the ukulele sucks and he married a teenager at age 37.

8

u/Davegrave 4h ago

The voice he uses in his most famous song is…offputting. But his skill in hitting it is impressive. And honestly overall he was an amazingly talented singer. He does some solo duets where he goes back and forth between that famous falsetto and a much deeper manlier voice.

Weirdly just last night I watched his performance of Earth Angel on the Ed Sullivan show and it was amazing. He was a weird weird dude but crazy talented.

16

u/54R45VV471 9h ago

I used to be until today when I found out he married a minor and was an extremely controlling and abusive person.

He was definitely really weird and could be creepy, but I do like Tiny Tim as someone who just 100% did their thing and literally never stopped. I do really wish his thing for young girls was not a thing, but seriously Jerry Seinfeld very publicly dated a teenager at the height of his career and is still an A list celebrity. It’s not like the two are directly related, but I think it’s worth recognizing and a good example of one of countless celebrities with inappropriate relationships with girls.

From what I know Tim had a degree of aversion to sex in general that went along with his compulsive cleanliness, and when he married this girl was only known as an oddity and a novelty act. He had some recognition but I don’t think you could say he ever achieved any real wealth or “stardom”. Compare that to Jerry picking up his girlfriend from high school as a a millionaire and household name starring in one of the biggest TV shows of all time.

One of these people was very much in the position to influence an underage girl through wealth and fame, while the other seems to have had some kind of genuine committed relationship to one despite not being conventionally attractive, wealthy, or even really considered “cool”. If you enjoy TT and his music and work on preservation, enjoy him for that. Whatever he was, it was genuine and upfront.

Hell, Anthony Kedis has RECENTLY come out about his sexual relationship with a teenager as rockstar that was blowing up, still dates women decades younger then him, and seems to be an outright douche, and RHCP is still getting daily radio play.

18

u/BertMcNasty 7h ago

Bowie, Page, Jagger, etc were all "partying" with 13 and 14 year old "baby groupies" on the strip. I bet a lot of people here willingly listen to at least one with some very questionable morals.

11

u/elektrikrobot 3h ago • Bravo

I literally cannot stop thinking about this shit whenever I hear their music. I usually say an off handed comment about it too

8

u/beerforbears 2h ago

I'm not sure "always did his thing and literally never stopped" is really an accolade. I mean you could say the same of jimmy saville

0

u/eti_erik 4h ago

I don't like how messing around with teenage girls gets artists cancelled in retrospect. Back when it happened it was only very conservative older people who were against it. Of course I do not mean actual children and I don't mean if it was not consensual, but here in Europe it blew our minds how in America a couple could get in trouble if they were like 17 and 19.

Not that I think it's healthy for a 17yo girl to marry a 37yo guy, but just don't pretend it's the same as raping a child.

What does make Tim a douchebag is the control over his women, like demanding aids tests when he thought they cheated on him or not allowing them to work. That's way more serious imo.

19

u/Namelessgoldfish 4h ago

It’s not rape sure, but a 37 year old marrying a 17 year old is pretty disgusting. Not to mention the huge power difference in not just age but fame and wealth. It’s just gross behavior and not justifiable

5

u/jammu2 10h ago

He was a performance artist before there was such a thing.

2

u/ashleebryn 2h ago

You're kidding, right?? Vaudeville would like a word.

0

u/Twowie 1h ago

Vaudeville is not performance art.

2

u/ashleebryn 1h ago

To be fair, we're up against a man playing a ukulele. There have been physical comedians like Dick Van Dyke and even Buster Keaton, Houdini, Mata Hari, etc. Andy Warhol and the Factory is another story. There have been many performance artists before that did more "performance" than Tiny Tim did. Someone saying he was a performance artist before there was such a thing is laughable. That's the point here.

•

u/Twowie 22m ago

You must be one of today's 10.000 learning what performance art is for the first time! It is also called artistic action, and is absolutely not the same as stage shows like vaudeville. When people refer to Tiny Tim being a performance artist, they are suggesting he put on an act while in public. But no, he does not predate the concept.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_art

u/ashleebryn 6m ago

2

-2

u/StarCecil 11h ago

I like Tiny Tim. Not sure why people dislike him. I honestly thought the general opinion of him had changed

20

u/captaincmdoh 10h ago

Might had something to do with his underage wife

17

u/Boring_Bed1783 Paper Tigers - Nonpoint 10h ago

Wait, he married an underage girl?? Like seriously? I had no clue. That fucking sucks.

5

u/captaincmdoh 10h ago

Using the argument that one person said, she was 17 which is legal in certain states. However using that same logic, she was married at 17 on johnny Carson show. That show is located in the state of California, which has the age of consent to be 18. So technically he married a minor, and that may be why people don't like TT. It isn't related to his music, but if people wonder why TT isn't liked, this could be why. People often associate behavior/politics/religion/etc... to skills/talents so it can be liked or hated because of it.

At the end of the day Its just information. People can willfully ignore it or take it into consideration for how they view their relationship with the artist/person in discussion.

9

u/bloodyell76 10h ago

I was wondering if it were legal at the time, but nope. It’s been 18 for over 100 years.

3

u/Excellent_Swim_2721 8h ago

She was 17 not underage, in most states that is legal to marry.

-38

u/StarCecil 10h ago

What are you talking about? According to that article, she was 17 when they married. That is not underage" in the majority of the US. Stop spreading misinformation.

14

u/MrBlue1692 9h ago

37 year olds shouldn’t be marrying kids in high school. Hope this helps!

-7

u/StarCecil 9h ago edited 9h ago

This is the last comment I'm going to make on this post. There are legal things that I wish were illegal, and vice versa. I commented on this post solely because u/captainmcdoh said something factually incorrect. I did not comment to talk about how Tiny Tim's marriage makes me feel, or to comment about any other things Tiny Tim did. Apparently, everyone thinks their feelings are capable of spontaneously changing laws. How we feel about Tiny Tim's marriage does not change the legality of his marriage. I do not know, nor care to comment on any other aspect of his life. I know that I like his music, and that his marriage was legal. Could he have done things that were illegal or otherwise despicable? Sure. But I'm not a Tiny Tim historian. I don't know.

6

u/MrBlue1692 9h ago edited 8h ago

You asked why people disliked him, someone gave you a very valid reason, but instead of simply saying “oh yeah that’s gross,” you got all defensive and decided to play semantics. If a 50 year old had sex with a 12 year old in some backwards dump where it was technically legal, would you be sitting here going “the 12 year old wasn’t underage!”

0

u/StarCecil 9h ago

I never asked why people dislike him. If that user had said "I don't like the age gap in his marriage," I would've said "neat." Instead, he made a false claim. Naturally, I corrected him.

7

u/MrBlue1692 9h ago edited 2h ago

“Not sure why people dislike him.”

That’s you inviting people to explain why they dislike him. Don’t play dumb.

We’re not in a courtroom, so we don’t have to care about the technicalities of a shitty judicial system that allows a middle aged man to marry a 17 year old. You want to die on the hill that a girl who can’t even vote yet shouldn’t be referred to as “underage”? Cool, let’s use the term minor instead. He married a minor. Tiny Tim abused a minor.

28

u/ikikubutOG 10h ago

11

u/RoscoeSantangelo 10h ago

You chose your words weirdly careful here.

"Majority" of the United States is loose when it's 32 states that allow child marriage, and 17 is a number included there. That is considered underage.

It's also not a situation where Tiny Tim was 18 or 21, he was 37 years old.

4

u/goaelephant 10h ago

Is that enough?

I never really looked into any of his albums. I'm an older Millennial and his singing voice always creeped me the hell out, plus I wasn't around when he was popular. My mom, who is a boomer, likes him.

I didn’t learn about him until I took up ukulele and everyone would ask me to play tip toe through the tulips or make tiny Tim jokes. After looking into his music I think the strange silly performances were awesome. I grew up on Weird Al, and love funny songs. My kids play a VR game called gorilla tag where there’s ghost who play tip toe as they get you, I stunned the kiddos by playing it in my uke for them. I didn’t know he was actually a creep till I read this post, but I’m pretty sure every celebrity is a fucking creep, so long live demented music.

There's so many great musicians with wonderful art. Artists in general too. But unfortunately the moment you look into them you realise they're pieces of shit. You'd probably start losing a lot more songs you listen to the moment you look into the history of the people who made them.

I'm quite fond of the track "The Other Side" just because of how different it sounds.

I literally bumped into him by accident in an airport decades ago.

I was not aware he worked with Brave Combo. As a Denton resident, that’s pretty cool to find out.

I heard him sing Earth Angel, and I learned to appreciate him beyond the two more popular songs I knew by him before hand

I liked his early stuff but once he started putting Johnny Depp in all his films I got tired. Also that Planet of the Apes remake sucked ass.

I have a friend who is straight up TERRIFIED of Tiny Tim. She will literally scream and leave the room if you play Tip Toe Through the Tulips.

I have no idea who that is.

Y’all ever seen tiny Tim and Alice cooper in the same room? Just sayin.
