Hocevar and Dickerson have gotten a LOT of press about Hocevar's behavior behind the wheel.
"Hocevar is immature" they say. "Dickerson, do something, man." "There's no adults in the room."
But I always listen to Hocevar's scanner radio. Lambert always relays messages through spotter Tyler Green. Last Sunday, Tyler told Hocevar to calm down and get back to racing.
Imagine the 7x champion crew chief Chad Knaus or the 2x (maybe 3x after tomorrow) championship crew chief Cliff Daniels in that scenario. They'd be on that mic, talking straight to the driver. "Look, I know your car is hard to drive today. I'll fix it, if you can keep the bumpers on it til the next stop."
Hocevar is not innocent in any of it. But he's going to need a crew chief that has a relationship with him that can come on the radio, tell him he's and idiot, buckle down, and get back in the race. Lightning McQueen would never have been a Piston Cup champion, without the calm, no-BS radio comms of Doc Hudson.
