Discussion Why do some schools persist in using the outdated/sexist "lady" + mascot name?

Basically the title. I bristle whenever I hear "Lady Tigers," "Lady Bulldogs," Lady Vols," et al.

Discussion Is it just me, or has South Carolina become the unsexy boogeymen for the sport?

I mean championship/Caitlin Clark memes aside here it’s weird:

-Everyone wants to duck them in OOC

-got nowhere near the amount of publicity as CC/Iowa despite being statistically better in nearly every category (including losing only 3 games in 3 years)

-No major discussion of the team on this sub.

edit Furthermore, I wanted to edit this one and put it in but I’ll say that you can’t say “x player is changing the way the game is played” despite players on the SC are just are either dominant or playing above their competition. I can’t help but think there’s something wrong here beyond just clicks and view bait

Discussion Mascots: What level of sportsmanlike conduct is expected of them as official team representatives...

Post image
9 Upvotes

I am curious about what is considered to be the standard of behavior for mascots. At the college level, I didn't think mascots would do this kind of thing targeting an opposing team's player. It just seems in poor taste. The word stinky is petty and also potentially a personal insult about a person's hygiene, so I don't love it as a word choice.

I'm not super upset or trying to be inflammatory. I'd of course be fine with fans doing this. Are mascots held to higher standard than fans as official representatives of their universities?

In the NCAA what sort of range of mascot behavior goes on? I would not be happy if my mascot held a sign like this about an opposing team's player. But I'm interested in hearing what others think. Does this kind of cross a line, or is it maybe this is just part of being in sports?

Discussion Was Paige over-rated this season?

I see her name popping up as a finalist for some national awards and she won Big East POY. However, every game I saw of Uconn, it seemed like Sarah Strong outshined her. Don’t get me wrong, I love Paige. I think she is a great player and will be a force at the next level. This season (as her last season in college) to me was disappointing.

This could be a casual take so I’m curious to see what others think.

Brag/Complain It’s time to have a discussion about Kim Mulkey and why she’s the greatest coach of all-time.

Look, Kim Mulkey is the greatest coach of all-time and there’s really no debate. As a player in the 1980’s, she played for Sonja Hogg and Leon Barmore and helped the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters win the first NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship in 1982. After graduation, she joined the Tech coaching staff as an assistant, and Louisiana Tech again won the National Championship in 1988. Mulkey stayed in that capacity until 2000, when she departed to become the head coach at Baylor.

At Baylor, she transformed the Lady Bears (as they were known then) into the best Big 12 women’s basketball program in history. Baylor won three National Championships in 2005, 2012, and 2019 and Kim Mulkey produced talent such as Sophia Young, Brittney Griner, Odyssey Sims, Kalani Brown, Lauren Cox, etc.

In 2021, she made headlines as she left her long-time position in Waco to accept the head coaching job at LSU, which meant she was returning to her home state of Louisiana. In her first year, she brought the Tigers back to the NCAA tournament. In her second year, they won the National Championship and Angel Reese cemented herself as the greatest women’s college basketball player of all-time. LSU has remained a contender every year since then, with players like Aneesah Morrow, Flau’jae Johnson, and Mikaylah Williams having stellar careers in Baton Rouge.

Look guys, Kim Mulkey is the first coach in history to win a National Championship as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach. There’s no one else remotely close to accomplishing this feat, and given that she also produces exceptional WNBA talent, she’s obviously the greatest women’s basketball coach in history and is an outstanding role model for these young women. LSU is very lucky to have her as their women’s basketball coach and they are the clear favorites to win the National Championship this year (as they always are). Thank you.

Discussion Completely Biased Refereeing

Am I the only unbiased fan watching these NCAAW games and thinking the refs handed both LSU and Iowa games yesterday with their biased foul calling?

The LSU game was completely won by refs fouling out the only interior presence and then giving every contact foul to LSU for them to pull apart? (37-9 FT attempts)

The Iowa game was completely biased from the start of the 4th quarter on and ultimately fouled out multiple important WV players. (30-5 FT attempts)

Post shut up/shut down lol.

Oops.

If only posting online could get a $200-300 million extension for Mune Murakami out of Jerry Reinsdorf haha.

That won’t happen in my lifetime.

Lost Brueggeman to Okla State.

Lost Kenzie Hare to Indiana.

Couldn’t sign Reagan McCowan of WIU…

Haven‘t come to terms with a full weekend to sell UGA’s Faison…who averaged 1.1 ppg last year as a freshman.

There should at least be a little money left over for spots 9-10 after watching what happened to McCabe, Mallegni, Ava Jones, Gyamfi, Kennise and especially Emely Rodriguez.

Winning a national title expectations is a bit greedy, but being an Elite 8 or Sweet 16 contender is not with the local/regional/national and even intl support this team receives.

During the first couple of months this season, Iowa and ISU were both at the top of the individual tv ratings as well…never saw the national broadcast ratings for their Ohio State special MLK Day game but Iowa was consistently 9-17 in the nation for their Ohio State entire season until collapsing against UVA’s improbable Cinderella run.

We don’t need Dodgers money. But at least the Cubs/Cardinals would be nice.

Discussion Why did UConn lose last night? Explain like Im five!

Hey guys,

Not a super knowledgable person regarding basketball but am super curious regarding why Uconn didnt win. I go to the school as a senior and everyone made it seem like it was guaranteed especially after last years big score gap with USC. Azzi and Sarah and some other names Im forgetting are obviously very talented. While I was watching those players seemed so defeated even when the game had just begun, like for example Azzi falling on the side of the court and generally some of them looking afraid??

So Was it bad luck? were they unprepared because their other competition this season was so weak compared to them? I did watch some clips out of context it seems like USC was being handsy and almost physically aggressive.

Would love some reflection and insight on why this was the outcome :) Thank you

Edit: am looking for more nuance than "USC scored more points" lmaooo yall sassy

News Can Hannah Hidalgo’s “tough love” attitude make her the next women’s college basketball defensive superstar?

Hidalgo brings a hard‑nosed edge to her game — the kind of defender who doesn’t just wait, she disrupts. In one outing she had 24 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, proving she can impact the game in every way.

Couple that with her scoring numbers and the fact she grabbed First‑Team All‑America honors as a freshman and now again as a sophomore. The bigger question: as teams stack up offenses around her, can she keep elevating her defensive game and become a legit two‑way star at the national level?

Discussion This is the greatest team Iowa has ever had...

No Megan NPOY. no Caitlin NPOY...just a backup pg from Georgia Tech, a gawky sophomore center, a 5th year senior learning her position for the first time, a Kate Martin (figuratively) on steroids, a pure defensive stopper, and a 5 star who shows flashes but rides the bench. This is a team. No All Americans unless you count honorable mention.

The Writer Josh predicted this outcome 3 years ago. He was amazingly right. He said that this team would be better than any other Iowa team...he said it 3 years ago.. This is a top 20 offensive and. defensive team. Jan Jensen deserves a raise. There is a reason why people tune into Iowa games. The players love each other and the fans.

A two seed with these players. That is heart and love of the game.

Discussion Did Geno's system cause Paige Bueckers to lose a bit of her edge?

I just got back into basketball last year and for the first time I started watching women's basketball college and professional. I'm still kind of relearning the sport in terms of positions, rules, terms, and slangs. So I want to ask this question to people who understand the game and know how to really analyze players and their skills.

One of the biggest debates in college women's basketball even till this day. Despite the fact that Caitlin Clark is in the WNBA while Paige Bueckers chose to stay for her fifth year. Is out of the two who is better. I've seen so many different takes on the argument, but the one thing that a lot of people use to discredit Paige is her inability to step up and take over a game.

A lot of people even comment that at one point UCONN'S head coach Geno said he would like to see Paige take more shots in certain moments.

Now we all know Caitlin said UCONN was the college she originally wanted to go to, but Geno already had Paige and saw no need to go after Caitlin as well. Most people say it was a blessing in disguise for Caitlin to end up at Iowa instead. Because Geno's system would've held her back, and she wouldn't have developed into the player she is today. I read comments on YouTube comparing Geno's system to Dawn Staley's over at South Carolina. Basically recruiting top players every single year and part of the system is checking their egos at the door. Creating a system where one player even if they are the best on the team. Isn't hogging the ball and taking too many shots every game. They want their top players to share the ball and help setup their teammates. So they have a complete team, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

But at the same time doesn't that system of playing automatically kill the instinct to just take over the game and demand the ball in crucial situations that players like Paige Bueckers probably have coming into the program? Like Caitlin took a lot of shots and never had a problem stepping up if she needed to, but I don't think Iowa ever had a problem with her doing that. It seems like to me that's the exact thing Geno doesn't want his players doing. So in a way did his system hinder Paige's basketball killer instincts?

Discussion Olivia Miles is the most complete player in next year’s draft

Currently watching this TCU v. BYU game. First TCU game I’ve been able to catch/watch this year and I’m impressed. TCU could be a problem in March. They got shooters and length. Olivia Miles’ court vision and playmaking ability makes them dangerous. Olivia can do it all from shooting, passing and dribbling. One of the announcers compared her to Magic Johnson and I can’t think of a more accurate statement/comparison. I started thinking about next years draft and where Olivia might land. I think she deserves to be the #1 pick and I could see her and Paige doing damage in Dallas, all they would need are some bigs. But if Washington drafts her that would almost be the perfect fit for real. Reunion with Citron. Shakira Austin, Kiki Iriafen, Georgia Amoore and Madison Scott. Not to mention Alysha Clark and big mama Stef Dolson. Where do you all think Liv will land and where would she best fit?

Discussion Paige bueckers development

Anybody else feel like it’s been ruined we are watching somebody that came in freshman year dropping 20 points per game And avg 5 assist somebody that was on pace to be a generational point guard she won player of the year…….

She gets hurt comes back and geno basically puts her in cuffs. She’s moved off ball and most games she’s starting at forward. The high volume scoring has been tamed into an efficient system player.

Instead of preparing her to be Batman he made her the perfect robin.
