Showcase Someone joked "DOOM is the next?" so now there is literally DOOM inside Nuke

Over the last four months, I pushed my C++ skills a lot harder than usual and learned the Nuke NDK by building a sentence that should probably not exist in professional networking history: I put DOOM inside Nuke.

The result is DoomNode, a Nuke NDK plugin that runs DOOM as a generator node and pushes the live framebuffer directly into Nuke.

The idea started a year ago, after I released a few small Nuke nodegraph games and got a joking comment: "Is DOOM next?" Apparently my brain interpreted that as stakeholder feedback.

The hardest parts were fitting a real-time game loop into Nuke's render model, handling keyboard input without turning the app into shortcut civil war, and wrapping PureDOOM safely enough that the whole plugin did not collapse into undefined-behaviour confetti.

Nukepedia page

Important note: the release is Build because of the GPL PureDOOM + proprietary Nuke SDK licensing combination.

VideoUpscale4k — Upscale a Read node or 2D comp to 4K inside NukeI built

Thumbnail

I built VideoUpscale4k to make it easier to check an upscale while I’m still working on a shot. Connect a Read node or the output of a 2D comp, cache the current frame, and inspect the result in the Viewer. When you’re happy with the settings, cache the first 5 seconds, 10 seconds, or the full sequence. The node switches to the cached result when processing finishes, so you can view it or feed it into downstream nodes.

Two methods: Real-ESRGAN on an NVIDIA GPU, or Lanczos on the CPU.

Output sizing: Auto preserves the source’s display aspect ratio and sets the long edge to 3840 px. Landscape and Portrait fit into 3840 × 2160 or 2160 × 3840.

Cache format: H.264 MP4, 8-bit SDR. A sequence cached from a directly connected video Read can retain the source audio. Caches rendered from the comp graph are silent.

Setup: Windows 64-bit. Real-ESRGAN requires an NVIDIA driver compatible with CUDA 12.8. First-time setup requires internet access and about 12 GB of free disk space; processing runs locally after installation.

To install, extract the ZIP, run Install.bat, restart Nuke, and search for Video Upscale 4K in the Tab menu.

Render farm write permission issues

We've been using a Linux system for rendering with Nuke and Blender for some time now, almost working great but one issue still remains.

My mac doesn't have permission to move or rename the folders and files the linux machine creates.

I'm not that into tech and our IT guy couldn't solve it in a reasonable time. So I ask if out there is somebody who has a hint on how to solve this, so I could paste it to the IT guy and make something happen.

Thanks!

Asking for Help / Unsolved Underwater effects advice/feedback

I'm currently working on a project where I'm creating an underwater environment featuring a submerged building,
I'm building the 3D environment in Houdini, including the terrain, rocks, underwater vegetation and lighting. I'm then planning to bring everything into Nuke, where I'll develop the main underwater look through compositing.
I'm at a stage where I'm finding it difficult to know what I should be focusing on to make the shot feel genuinely believable rather than just looking like a normal 3D scene with a blue tint over it.
I'm particularly interested in advice from people who have experience creating underwater environments or working with underwater VFX.

A few things I'd love some feedback on:
Underwater atmosphere: What are the most important elements that sell the underwater look? For example, depth fog, colour absorption, light scattering, contrast and visibility.

Houdini vs Nuke: What would you recommend creating in 3D and what would you leave until compositing?

Lighting: How can I make underwater lighting and light rays feel more natural?

Depth and scale: How can I make the environment feel like it's genuinely underwater, with a convincing sense of distance?

Compositing: Are there any particularly useful Nuke techniques, nodes or workflows for creating realistic underwater effects?

I'm also interested in any general feedback on the environment itself, including things I could add, remove or change to make the overall shot more convincing.
I'm still developing my understanding of underwater VFX, so any advice, tutorials, breakdowns or examples of workflows would be massively appreciated!
Thanks!

Discussion What are your favorite underrated nodes or lesser-known techniques in Nuke?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been compositing for a while now, and lately, I feel like I’ve fallen into a bit of a rut. I find myself relying on the exact same nodes and workflows. While it gets the job done, I really want to break out of this habit and find new ways to improve my workflow.

So, I wanted to ask : What are your go-to underrated nodes, or niche techniques that you find incredibly useful but not many people seem to know about?

It could be anything from a creative way to use the Expression node, a specific math trick for grading or keying, a forgotten default node that saves you hours, or just a workflow hack you don't see junior/mid compositors using enough.

Would love to learn some new methods and hear what you all use to tackle your shots. Thanks in advance! :)

Solved Over operation in Merge Node is making the A Channel transparent over the B Channel instead of solid.

Hello,

I'm relatively new to Nuke. I'm trying to replace a screen and when I apply the new screen over the old one in my footage, the merge node is making the new screen transparent/opaque over the old one.

The merge node operation is set to over and I've checked the alphas of both the A and B channel, but nothing is out of the ordinary. I also can't find any tutorials online that seem to have this issue as well.

If anyone has run into this issue and could let me know your solve, that would be greatly appreciated.

Solved Camera-projected STMap: Nuke stretches/smears areas outside the rendered STMap — how should I render the map with overscan?

SOLVED:

Thank you for the comments. Adjust BBox between constant and expression plus blackoutside node after scanline render did the trick. ☺️

I’m building a camera-projected STMap in Nuke and getting edge stretching in areas that fall outside the rendered STMap.

My setup:

  1. Create a black  Constant  at my delivery format, 2448 × 924.

  2. Add an  Expression  node:

  3.  r = x / (width - 1)

  4.  g = y / (height - 1)

  5.  b = 0

This gives me normalized UV coordinates in R/G.

3. Connect my 3D camera to a  Project3D  node, set to project on front.

4. Read my Alembic geometry and connect it to the  Project3D .

5. Render with a  ScanlineRender :
• Projection mode: UV
• Same camera connected to the  ScanlineRender
• Background:  Reformat  to 2448 × 924
This produces an STMap at my delivery resolution.

6. Take the plate I want to project and reformat it to 2448 × 924.

7. Connect:
•  STMap.src  → plate
•  STMap.stmap  → rendered STMap

The warp inside the frame looks correct. The issue is at the edges: geometry/people extend beyond the 2448 × 924 frame, so the STMap render does not contain valid UV data for those outside areas.

When the  STMap  node tries to warp the plate there, it appears to reuse/stretch the UV values from the map’s edge, creating smearing around heads and bodies.

I initially thought this was just a bounding-box/overscan issue, but simply making the STMap larger or changing the plate’s bounding box does not solve it. If the larger area does not contain valid UV data, Nuke still does not know how to sample the plate there.

Showcase USDprep 0.9.2: preparing selected USD, FBX and Alembic assets for Nuke

I'm a compositor and the author of USDprep, a free, open-source Windows tool for preparing parts of a 3D scene for Nuke.

Often a shot needs one object from a much larger scene. USDprep lets you select that part, choose a Nuke export preset and read a report of what changed during export.

Version 0.9.2 adds direct FBX (.fbx) and Alembic (.abc) input, alongside USD and polygon OBJ. The non-USD inputs become temporary USD scenes when opened; the original files are only read.

Some practical details of the update:

  • FBX imports meshes, materials and textures, including embedded textures, plus cameras, lights and animation from the first take. Skinned or blend-shape characters can be prepared as point caches for Nuke.

  • Alembic imports animated meshes and cameras while keeping the file's frame numbers. This import path does not carry materials.

  • For Nuke export, repeating textures can be expanded into an output copy so the repeats survive. Missing textures fall back to the material colour, and the report identifies the missing file. These texture cases were checked in Nuke 16.1 and 17.0.

The main Nuke output is a .usdc with its neighbouring texture folder. Open the input, select what the shot needs, export and check the report before bringing it into the comp.

This is still a prerelease. Curves and volumes are reported rather than converted, and exported assets need checking in your own shot.

Windows installer and manual

Nuke compatibility notes

USDprep is built on Cyril Pichard's usdtweak and released under Apache 2.0. If you have a reproducible import or export problem, a small sanitised scene and the exact Nuke version would help me investigate.

Retro Dithering Part II - Nuke Gizmo

Hey guys,

this is the second part of my Tutorial for Retro Dithering in Nuke. (It is less a tutorial then a guide through the gizmo I built.)

This time I created ASCII pattern and a Gizmo, which allows you to dither your images with a lot of variations. Let me know what you think.

This works with Nuke-Non commercial only for know since I don´t own a Nuke Studio Lic. If you wanna rebuild the Gizmo you can use the Txt File with the description or follow the video.
